I really love Animated Prowl; I feel like he genuinely deserves more praise than he gets. He's got a feeling of quality about him that's kind of been lacking from other recent bots I've bought. Definitely makes me excited for the potential of an Animated Megatron redux.

My gripes about the "adaptation" aside, I just can't help but feel he's, engineering-wise, a downgrade from the original figure.
His robot mode wings/jets are supposed to swing down and fully cover his leg bits in bike mode, but they're very visibly exposed on this one; you shouldn't see any tan in bike mode. It's only worsened too by the exposed chunky, gold shoulder joints, which originally seemlessly blended into the bike's form just thanks to their shaping (and were black too).
I'm also not fond of how the handlebars are done in robot mode, but that's what I'd consider nitpicking, by then.
It's not like Armada Megatron, where you sacrifice all the vehicle gimmicks that weren't in the show in favor of better articulation; because the original Animated Prowl already had the exact (EXACT) same articulation as this. They just redid an existing toy beat for beat, but did it worse... so I'm sorry, I just can't help but see this figure as a disappointment and nothing but.

That's the biggest thing Animated fans wanted out of a new Prowl toy, because the original sidecar armor figure is exorbitantly scalped, and instead they release a toy that had nearly all his ninja/samurai aesthetics removed. I think all of your nitpicking is completely invalided by how fucking awful this entire area looks. And even if your precious black shoulders might blend in better, they look awkward as hell with his arms dangling off of those pencil joints sticking out of his torso. Also, the feet on the original suck because only the toes are jointed so you can't make them sit flat in wide stances. And the knees wouldn't even go to 90 degrees. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

In fact, I'd argue the new helmet has even more samurai vibes than the old one.

In picrel, he literally has bigger thighs than Optimus Prime. You only think they're supposed to be skinny because almost ALL thighs were comparatively skinny as a part of the show's overaching stylization. But this isn't an "Animated" figure. It's a Generations figure of an Animated character, so they sized up his thighs accordingly. If you prefer the original look, that's fine, but don't blame the figure for not being something it was never trying to be.

Much like Arcee, I think Legacy Prowl is a really cool design but it would probably be better served as a different character than trying to pass it off as an Animated character.
Repaint it as G1 Override or Road Pig something and I'd be all over it.

If that's really what you're hung up on, I guess you could just call him something else. Although I'm definitely curious as to what they might repurpose the mold as, if anything.

That picture you posted is really only driving home how similar the two are, though; all the key design elements of the original are there: the V torso, the bulky forearm armor, the baggy trousers, and the big bellbottoms and trooper boots. I stand by my opinion that they did an excellent job.

They don't look gigantic in your pic, nor in the original art for the new toy posted previously. Them being thicker that Optimus there doesn't make them anywhere close to whatever the fuck the Legacy toy has. Maybe they went for puffy ninja trousers but they just look silly not only as far as this design goes, but as a transformer design in general.

This one is even worse. The entire scene, including its set up with the attempted mugging, serves no purpose to the rest of the story. It doesn't further Nightshade's growth as a character, unless you count learning the word 'non-binary'. It doesn't even have a thematic connection with the rest of the episode, it's just there to get reactions out of people.
Anyone who thinks these scenes as a good representation of non-binary people in media has zero standards whatsoever.

Sounds like Hasbro has remedied the Seaspray problem.

He now has his own set up for repaints:

Octopunch(heavy retool apparently has extra removable parts like Shattered Glass Megatron)
G2 Manta Ray
Decepticon Marine Scout(this is likely a reference to a Botcon exclusive)
G2 Seaspray
Man-o-War(no idea might be some 1 panel comic reference)

Sounds like many of these will be made for group sets and not be individual retail releases or be generation selects(then again Generation Selects seems to have kind of died down)

They kept his samurai helmet, kept his thighs big, his waist tiny, his trousers flared, and even did a better job making his wings stick up as high as the animated model than the original toy did. The only change was scaling his proportions to fit into modern G1/generations aesthetic, and that's not "arbitrary". That's just literally the focus of the toyline.

So Catscan, Glyph, Tap-out, and Rook seem to be rumored. I guess we’re not getting a new cyclonus since we have two already. But movie cheetor seems to be the likely candidate for Catscan. I just wish Hasbro would be better at finishing teams before starting new ones. Yes, in terms of aesthetic, they were intended to co-exist with each other in a single universe. That's why so many G2 characters are direct repaints of their G1 counterparts. But G1, Beast Wars, and Beast Wars II/Neo all have canonical intersections in which they are visually concurrent with eachother (picrel). G1 Optimus, Beast Wars Primal, and Leo Prime were all originally intended to share a continuity during their earliest iterations. And if they ever make a Legacy Big Convoy, he will look similar to his original anime/toy design for the exact same reason, just as G2 Laser Prime and all the other G2 bots exist within Legacy without any real "reimagining".

Christ, I figured the lot of you would be autistic enough to understand this without the need for explanation.

Next line of fossilizers/junkions/whatever’s is apparently pretenders specifically autobot pretenders it looks like. Supposedly what makes them different is that there’s a core cube that transforms into a little guy while everything else is just articulated weapons you can pop on and off and reconfigure however you want. There’s no real transformation but they’re like a step above the Kingdom guys which were all micro master bases, it’s almost like the Takara diaclone reboot where they’re very modular with their modes but each figure won’t cost you hundreds of dollars.

As someone who has collected transformers since the beginning, I can honestly say HFTD Lugnut is up there as one of the best figures/toys ever created.

He's definitely in my top ten, along with Generations Springer. The level of detail, love and execution put into those two figures still blows away most figures released to this day.

Look at this bike mode, it's beautiful. It is the exact same transformation, so I will accept zero excuses on behalf of it.

Anyways I agree the pelvis on the og isn't exactly perfect, I also thought it was weird or missing a piece as a kid. That said, I don't like that picture used earlier in the thread >>10579172, because the angle and pose makes it look way more prominent than it actually is. It's very tiny in actuality, and rarely gonna be noticable if you're... actually posing the toy, lol. Not defending it, but just saying it's not as bad as it's being made out; definitely and absolutely a product of its time though. They didn't make figures THAT poseable as standard back then.

I think the takeaway here is that the two Prowls basically just swapped what was better about them. The original toy has a great bike mode but a real stupid looking robot mode, and the Legacy figure has a good looking robot mode, but a bad bike mode.

You misunderstand. The main problem with the Animated figure's robot mode isn't the pelvis. It's bad, but the real problem is that the base design looks stupid as fuck. Because for the most part, the aesthetic of Cybertron is concurrent with G1. All of the original media and toylines pretty much up until the Bay era were always intended to stand alongside eachother, visually. As explained here >>10580067 G1, G2, Beast Wars 1/2/Neo were all considered canon to one another back when they were created. Japan even initially wanted the Unicron trilogy to be G1 as well until Hasbro vetoed the idea for whatever marketing reason.

Once Bayformers firmly established the concept of wildly different visual style and completely different continuities, more series branched off and did the same (Prime, Animated, Rescue Bots, etc.). It's why characters from those series would need to be redesigned to fit into the Legacy line, while most of what came before would not.

No joke, the Animated Prowl toy is what made me give a chance to the series back in the day. When I first saw the promo image of the cartoon I was horrified at those designs, then the first toy pics started to show up and when I saw Prowl I clearly remember thinking "damn, that actually pretty damn neat". The way they integrated the bike wheels into the robot was something really impressive back then.

And after that I decided to give the show a chance, fell in love with it, and bought 27 Animated toys that I still own. Since then I don't judge any piece of media just by the first impression.

The UT is widely different designs still done in the then typical G1 aesthetic.
In the cases like Armada Wheeljack or Energon Downshift, where the designs do sort of match, you can see the aesthetic is largely indistinguishable. At most, UT designs are just a bit more greebly, but so is the modern G1/CHUG aesthetic anyway.

He was very inconsistent in the anime. He had blue stripes, but they were smaller, and in bot mode they weren't even colored properly. It's really a crapshoot to see what the final deco they settle on will be, but I at least hope they do something more interesting than picrelated.

I'm not sure why this is so hard to grasp. Every original toyline from G1 up until Bayformers pretty much defined what the acceptable "generations aesthetic" was. If a character does not fit in with any of those styles, then it has to be redesigned to fit into the Legacy line. That's all there is to it.

I do wish the legacy figures were authentic to the original designs, purely because a lot of characters only had one or two toys that often weren’t the best designed- take prime soundwave for instance, it has way too much rubber which means the figure is extremely prone to deforming- this one pictured is fresh out of the box and had bends (which could be chalked up to age, another reason to want newer figures to be more accurate). Also fuck using those shitty stickers I’m painting the details on.

They didn't go far enough with G1-ifying Bulkhead.
It already sours the Prime fans just by existing but G1ers still didn't pick it up because of the head.
The entire body and vehicle mode are perfect as far as G1 styling is concerned but they probably got nervous it didn't have enough Prime aesthetics so gave him an unaltered Prime head.

If he got a head that looked akin to Brawn, something that would actually make him look like he was a G1 character first, he would of been fine.

Isn't that how they're marketed? Calling them Animated/Prime is more incidental to where the character designs originated. I never had any confusion myself.

Legacy Bulkhead is a far better G1 Bulkhead design than anything I've ever seen. It looks G1 without losing what makes Bulk unique (for the most part).
I don't know why people insist he would just be a darker Hauler. Or why 3rd parties are doing it now.

Interesting they included this sentence to show that references to Prime are more to do with the deco and therefore secondary, whereas they mention twice the overall design is Generations style.
That makes it sound like a G1 figure with Prime flavoring as opposed to a 50/50 blend of both, which is what some expected.

The problem is they never outright said what middle ground they where going for.
In Bulkheads case, he's more of a 80/20 split between G1 and Prime styling.
80%(Robot body, entire Vehicle mode) to 20%(Head, Weapons, Deco)

I think that sometimes makes up for how mediocre the altmode is, although if it feels like it transforms into literally nothing, then I don't know if that can salvage things, which is my worry about Devcon. They are pretty great, and the best figures these characters will ever get most probably. But if you're not used to this kind of import toys you may find them somewhat finicky, and you need to be careful when handling them. I also wish a couple of joints were a tad thighter and also that Speedy had knee joints (he was designed some years before the other two and it shows in some ways, like the lack of magnets for armor pieces the other two have).

They have very nice paint apps and include several different expressions too (mouth and eyes are separate pieces so you can combine them in different ways) and them including the bird armors is awesome, but sometimes I wish they ditched that in favor of their pizza parlor costumes.

At the end of the day, if you like the show that much they're a must have.

His alt mode looks accurate enough for me and it's fun to transform him. His articulation is good and he has tons of 5mm pegs. I love when they do deep cuts too.

Is Devcon even really a "deep cut"? He's a character from the single most popular piece of Transformers media of all time, even if it was just a single episode. I feel like nothing from Sunbow can really be called a "deep cut", it's all so talked-about, to the point that even the MPs get accessories that had less than a minute of total screentime.

I mean, people know about G1 but that doesnt mean people watched any episodes of it. You're more likely to find someone whose knowledge of the cartoon is exclusively from cultural osmosis and short clips from online. So, yeah I'd say tons of stuff from G1 can be considered obscure, *especially* characters who only appeared for single episodes and were never reused in more modern shows/movies, which G1 has boatloads of. Mostly non-Cybertronian characters, like that living computer or that alien monkey who made Unicron, or the alien pig bounty hunter guy; but also Autobots/Decepticons like Devcon, or (my personal favorite G1 lad) Octane. Hell, you could even call most early-season characters "obscure" too, even major characters like Hound/any combiner that isn't Devastator/half the minibots/etc. obscure, since hey it's not like they were used too much after G1 at all. Casual TF fans absolutely do not know who Powerglide is (even if they should, that little shit needs to be used more. I hate him but I just love watching him, he's the perfect "love to hate" character; he's not an antagonist in any way, he's just a cunt lmfao).

I can sort of see it. It's just that it looks too chunky to be speedy and too short to be tanky for a spaceship or aircraft. "A fun action figure but a bad Transformer" is something I already felt with Earthrise Arcee, and she's usually sort of put off to the side, but I really want to like Devcon.
