Godhands' reputation for breaking is mostly due to ppl misusing them. They don;t come with instructions or anything, so plenty of ignorant folks use them wrong.

Dont cut thick gates or clear plastic with them. Slice as far back on the blade as you can, try not to cut with the tips. Use a smooth, gentle squeezing motion, remember you are slicing, not pinching or chopping. Oil them every so often, and don't store them like a moron. Use the leather pouch every time you are not using the nippers.

Of course it's dangerous to use scalpel blades. Even surgeons take a risk when using very sharp blades.ö, but that doesn't mean it's not a great tool for the job. Honestly I feel safer with the scalpel blades than I ever did with the normal hobby knife razor blades because the scalpels cut so much more smoothly I don't have to worry about the blade getting caught or anything. It cuts like butter most of the time. It IS easier to accidentally cut too much material away, but that becomes a non-issue with practice.

Dont push anything down to the base of the blades. Leave some space from the center. Clean the blade off after use. And watch for plastic getting into the center part where the non sharp blade is.

Get a pair of cheap nippers, like the Bandai starter ones. That's what I use on my thick gates, clear plastic, and first snips. Cut the part off the sprue with the shit nippers (leaving a fair amount of nub), then bring in the single blade to cleanly slice off the remainder.

In case you were confused, I meant this about regular plastic. For clear plastic stick with the cheap nippers 100% of the time.

Clear please doesn't have that softness (or toothsome) most opaque plastics have. There's fewer fillers and plasticizers to make the plastic malleable/soft.
This also affects the durability. So some companies may use harder plastics, like Lexan, to make the clear plastic as durable as the opaque plastic. Clear acrylic is very easy to scratch and will break easier, especially if attached to more durable plastic.

In other words, model nippers are pretty shit tools because they're breaking from chewing up plastics. Tolerances are pretty low, since they are only expected to be used on plastic and someone forgot that clear plastics exist.

No, just two for standard plamo. One shit cheap one for runner removal and clear plastic, one single blade. You can get by with just the shitty nipper, but obviously this means more cleanup work for you, so the choice is yours.

Resin is a special use case and does require its own nipper, yes. But most people don't do resin kits so I wouldn't include this in a list of "plamo essentials" by any means. And resin is a pain in the ass both to work with and to ensure that you're not killing yourself with the dust, so I think if you're that committed already, just buying a new nipper is not a big deal at that point.

You really don't need to baby godhands like everyone says. SPN-120s are good for all cuts of plastic. One set of nippers is all your need for typical plamo work, but if you want to cut metal rods you should have some basic bitch ones.

Listen to me because I've been using mine for so many years cutting anything I want whether it be humongous gamesworkshop runners or clear plastic or even huge blocks of glued together styrene and am not parroting talking points people continually raise. You can see a tiny nick on the blade, all that's happened using it on everything. The blade has even gotten misaligned from some really thick plastic multiple times, and I bend it back into place.

Btw my friend's SPN-120 broke just cleaning up an ordinary nub, not even off the runner. Literally split just like the image you posted.

Asking the wrong guy because mine have never snapped despite my efforts and cutting the "wrong" plastic types. I have a second set sitting around I haven't opened because my intention was just to see when the first set broke. I think the only real factor of them breaking is just that lemons are made occasionally.

Generally when blades nick or snap too easily it's due to either shitty steel or shitty heat treatment. I assume they make these out of carbon steel which is why they rust so easily and they heat treat them to be as hard as possible to help with edge retention so it's not a throwaway tool, but that also means they'll snap. With knives made in carbon steel this edge retention is not a problem because you can sharpen a knife, this... not so much. The other anon is right as well, you shouldn't use a nicked tool. I doubt you can sharpen something that small although it's def doable if you can disassemble it) but fundamentally you're using a broken tool.

Plamo is already a relatively niche hobby, and you're paring that down even more by people who know what Godhands are, people who are willing to spend that much on a pair of nippers, people who will post pics of breaks online, etc. Clearly there is no way to determine how many are actually breaking, but the evidence is weighted heavily against the SPN-120, with very little available for other nippers.

they are fragile, but completely serviceable if you don't use them like a retard. I've used them plenty on clear plastic (only as a final cut before sanding, not to cut the part from the tree) and have had no issues. just a little bit of black oxidation over time which is completely harmless.

I've been in plamo for over 30 years now. I have seen lots and lots of tool discussion, as far back as IRC and USENET. "Broken nippers" were not a big thing for a long time unless it was something extreme, like "my dad used my nippers to strip copper wire." Godhands are the most well-known name, but they are still a very niche and high-priced tool that I would guess less than 20% of the community owns (and I am being generous there). When the ownership pool is small and you are still seeing a ton of evidence of breaks, that's cause for alarm.

Is photography always this bad? I dabbled in photography in the past and I recently met this guy who was into photography. He didn't know who Ansel Adams was but he started talking very excitedly with another guy about pieces of kit and where to get them. I haven't seen a single photo from them. With painting and drawing it's not even nearly as bad, you generally get into what someone is actually making fairly quickly into the conversation.

Finally watched zeta this year and it was shit.

Never liked the designs from that series since i started buying gunpla in the 90s.

You just missed the GundamInfo YouTube channel airing the compilation movies of the '79 series.
They also aired the Doan's Island film, which might still be there.
Gundam Wing is apparently up, as well as the two worst animated entries IMO.

Age isn't "Bad", it's just pretty weak with a few high moments here and there. The whole Generational thing is very neat to see when every other Gundam outside of UC only skips ahead a year or two at most, but in retrospective it kills the pacing of the show since you need to soft-reset the show every 13ish episodes to introduce the new Asuno kid and the new status quo. Flit's arc is a nice little take on 0079, Asemu's arc is probably the best of the 3 main kids, and Kio starts out okay but goes full retard the moment the AGE-3 Orbital gets captured. The Level 5 character designs are also really hit and miss, like put this guy next to Gihren, Rau, Trieze, or any other end-game Gundam villain and he and his schnoz would get laughed out of the room.

It was just too ambitious of a show while also being a bit more dumbed down for kids. If they made it a Father and Son story I could see it being a bit more concise but doing two generation skips was a bit too much.

I would also recommend perfecting nub removal to slow yourself down. Yours looks good already, albeit there is room for improvement, e.g. the right hand and the outer portion of the shield on your RX-79 there. It will compliment your learning to paint.

The hands are my crux. The dark material makes it hard to remove nubs and not leave visible marks. I appreciate it, though. I try to remove any nubs I see as cleanly as I can. Sandpaper makes me nervous so I just use an exacto knife.

What is the best way to paint the clear plastic pieces? This Zaku eye used a round sticker, and it seemed impossible to set flat because of the curved eye. I'd have liked to have just had a clear red piece instead of clear white.

Take the sticker off and get some Tamiya clear red paint. But I warn you, it will have nothing behind it but grey plastic, plus it is dark under its "forehead," so an actual clear red eye will be really hard to see.

A better idea is to get a pale pink paint marker.

That is a terrible idea. Matte coats are basically finely textured, you can think of it like sand. You put a wash over that, it's going to be a bleedy mess, you will likely need to strip and re-topcoat. The whole idea of doing a glosscoat first is that it's slick and shiny, so panel washes flow over easily and are easily wiped off. THEN you put the matte topcoat down at the end to seal it all in, that should be your last step.

Before. Consider the topcoat the final step. Seals everything in, and if matte, it dulls the plastic so it looks less like a toy. Also consider looking into waterslides, stickers look like crap

This is Five Star Stories. Expensive and often difficult kits. I think your best bet is the Volks kits, I would stay away from the cheap stuff like Wave as they are pretty disappointing and would take a lot of work to make look good.

it's a reissue, it's exactly the same as the old kit, not updated in any way.
you probably don't want one of these old wave kits if you don't paint, they have a lot of seams and sink marks to fill and almost nothing holds together on its own. i'm currently building wave's 1/144 knight of gold (pic related) and it's held together almost entirely with masking tape at the minute.
their jade temple (your pic) is about 10 years older than the kog but it suffers from most of the same issues, just on a lesser scale. if you've only ever snapped together bandai kits you might want a bit more experience, but old kits like this are fun if you have the skills.
the volks kits are a LOT better, but they still require gluing with some seam removal and painting. if volks do a version of what you want in the scale you want, it'd be better to go with that unless you just prefer the pre majestic stand proportions

I bought these 10 euro flush-cut nippers from an electronics-oriented hardware store. Made in Taiwan. They have an insulated handle and they're meant to be used on circuits etc. they're not a modeling tool. But I am pretty satisfied with them. I have worked on my first model with them and they'd cut the nubs perfectly flush, sometimes I didn't need to clean up with an xacto at all but just sanded a tiny bit and the result was very clean with no marks on the plastic whatsoever.
How do I tell how much of a better job could better nippers do? I have an untrained eye but I can't think of that much of a difference. It's not like with woodworking tool where you get cracks and splinters while a good chisel does what you actually think it should do and you go "ooooh I wish I knew".

Take a runner and cut the outer frame that holds the parts and cut that, the round part, then compare how clean the cut is. Some nippers will look more pinched then cut. There is a infograph floating around of someone who compared a bunch of nippers and showed the cuts

This isn't the best comparison, there is a much more comprehensive one with much better pics somewhere out there. But it does demonstrate at least that the Godhand actually slices straight across, while other nippers just crush the plastic together until it breaks.

Your 10 euro flush cutters are going to be around the Xuron level. You might not be able to tell on thinner gates but when you start getting to kits with big parts and really thick gates, it will become very apparent. But I will repeat myself: better nippers are MOSTLY just timesavers. A cleaner cut means less time cleaning up/sanding, and sanding thick nubs is no fun. So ask yourself if that's worth money to you.

Oh yeah I can see this now. There's a "click" when I snap the runner, but the cut I get on the flush side seems a bit cleaner than the Xuron. The other side definitely looks crushed though.
I plan on using this one for runners and a better one for nub removal only because it is a bit of a pain in the ass to clean that shit up. If I can get a pair of nippers that just slices everything clean I think it's worth the expense.

Biggest difference comes jsut from the spray nozzle itself. Most modeling brands have a softer spray, which can be very forgiving if you're new. If you ever watch demonstrations on youtube, you usually see people doing circles and jabs with their Mr Color cans. Crazy shit.
Do that with the more generic hobby brands like Krylon and you can get a thick mess, because their nozzles have a harder pressure.

Spray painters have their own little culture, where they sell various types of nozzles to put on their cans. You might see tops popped off at the spray can section at your local hardware store, because kids steal their favorite nozzles through the fenced shelves.

Anyway, just learn how to properly spray paint and you won't have any problems. Good even coverage is done with straight horizontal passes. You might require multiple passes, so you just repeat that pass, instead of some of the shit you see on youtube where they jiggle it back and forth, or do spot sprays.

Also, thicker gates will stress more when cut with crush-type nippers, sometimes this puts so much duress on the plastic it can create like, white stress "veins" going into your part. This is why it's a good idea to snip away from the part first, then do your final cut with good nippers.

I'd say Krylon is a little worse than the blue Mr. Hobby can in this example. Notice how much light it still reflects. Now look at how utterly flat and silky the Mr. Super Clear is. No hotspots, no visible reflections, just 100% smooth. This is the ideal for a matte topcoat.

You pay for quality. If you want that cool super flat look, you need to pay for an expensive topcoat. Krylon, at least in my opinion, looks like fucking shit, and is unsatisfying both to touch and to look at. But your own mileage may vary.

To add to this, if you are serious about the hobby, you can get this cost down over time by investing in an airbrush, then you can decant these spraycans into pots and spray them through your brush. This is way more efficient use of it than the can, and will save you money. But this is a "you gotta spend money to save money" situation, I wouldn't worry about that yet if you're new to modeling.

Those aren't my pics, but I use the can. Too poor for airbrush right now. You can get great results with the can, you just need to learn good spraypainting technique. For that, I recommend watching some tutorials, then buying a cheap can of Krylon and practicing on plastic shit around your house. Work at it until you get the hang of the distance, timing, how thick to lay down coats, etc.

Yeah, the finish. It never got smooth enough for me, and I was still getting hotspots and shininess in places. I got a bunch of Testors on discount from my local Hobby shop, and actually found it so shit that I started giving it away and using it on dumb shit for fun. Yea, just part it out- arms, legs, body, backpack etc. Get alligator clips on sticks so you can clip on the part, then you can then rotate it to get proper coverage/ allow it to dry. Huge tip is to get the entire part your spraying wet looking, but not dripping. Too little can cause a shitty finish. Watch a vid or 2 also to better understand what im sayin. Also, welcome to the plastic crack addiction club

It was made illegal to sell spray cans to kids in the 90s at the latest (might have been 80s but I wasn't around then), but a local hobby shop would recognise you as the kid who had come in the last three years to spend his birthday money and came in every couple of weeks to spend some pocket money and after a bit wouldn't worry to wait for your dad to get to the counter to make the transaction on some dullcote. Generally he knew that you knew you could wreak a lot more havoc with the loctite anyway.

Honestly no, a tight fit is usually preferred because of how loose and floppy models can get after time. However, too tight and you risk breaking stuff when you do move limbs. Just remember its a model and not a toy, you built it so you better understand how more parts= more stuff that can break. technique is super fucking critical.
Someone who's been at this hobby for a while can use the shittiest of paints to create masterpieces, because they know how the paint behaves and how to work it to make it look good.

This is why you see a lot of toy makers using stuff that would make a lot of modelers cringe or write a 50 paragraph essay about what they're doing wrong.
There's a couple of anons on /toy/ who use fucking Apple Barrel Paint to make impressive dioramas. Also pic

Anyway, most shit aimed at hobbyists is just to make their life easier, to the point there's one job tools that cost a ton of money, like god hand nippers. It's up to you on where you think you'll benefit most from spending more money.
Knowledge is key in cheaper paints work, with skill being a step or two below that. It's easy to look this shit up and then you just need to practice to make practical use of it. And that's not to say that Krylon is bottom of the barrel, because it's very mid-tier and why a lot of people stick with it after years.

You generally have to stray from the instructions to accomplish that because they like to have you put the armor on before attaching the limbs, but you should be able to tell when to skip to assembly if you want to take some assembled inner frame pics.

Even for HGs you quickly learn to sometimes deviate from the order the instructions present. I'd say it's best practice to do so for more complex models to avoid disassembly later.

that is not in the case of Perfect Grade Unleashed and MGEX Strike Freedom,

Bandai is so proud of ther multi-layer inner frame construction, that the instructions have instructions on building the innerframe first, then the armor parts in the other section

I'm probably way in the minority, but I kinda hate the PGU frame. There's something really dull about it somehow, like it has exactly the same silhouette as the finished kit with the armor on.

The old PG frame was more my speed. It feels like a real clanker, all nasty and mechanical and thin at some places. If the armor fell off this guy in an anime I feel like you'd get some proper "mecha gore," like skeletal looking joints and hanging cables and shit. Whereas I feel like the PGU's armor falling off is more like shucking off a t-shirt, it's too solid inside and is virtually unchanged shapewise.
