Hahli went from a headache mask to one that lets her use any Rahi power she wants, in addition to a nigh-unbreakable sword-claw and the ability to function better in her element.
Hewkii went from a mask that makes him a better marksman to something that lets him completely own everyone in 5 seconds.

What was the point of the inika having organic masks? What was the point of them having electric powers? Barely becomes relevant in the lore aside from their origin of the whole red star thing, it feels like they were wasted potential. Voya nui online game wasn’t canon, when it really, really should have been. They were only toa inika for a day:

>test out powers
>fight Vezok
>unbrainwash some metoran
>storm the piraka base
>go down the secret stairs to the mask of life, fight Vezok and get the mask of light
>go down to Mahri nui through another set of stairs, with all of the makuta possession and Zyglak shenanigans (unpublished, unreadable)
That’s all their actions as toa inika, might seem a fair bit maybe but it was literally all in one day. All the promo material and bionicle heroes gave this image of this ongoing struggle between the inika and the piraka on voya-nui, which would have been cool to see in like at least one book (but that book went to expanding the background of the piraka, despite two other books of just piraka, and the books featuring inika were still heavily piraka in terms of their screentime), it felt like Gregg and the writers really didn’t want to have the inika and they were just there for the sake of being there, and they would rather just feature more piraka stuff.

This section implies that there was like half a month or something between the inika and the mahri, which is something I don’t see in the books. I like to head cannon that the events of voya-nui online were partially canon at the very least, and the situation of freeing the matoran was a longer deal than it was implied to be.

I really feel like voya nui online should have been canon, like it was literally supposed to be but the devs bailed, if we got an inika movie and invasion maybe I would feel different

What's the replacement part for picrel? I want to replace the brittle limbs on my Stars Rahkshi, CCBS shoes look a little weird and so do those 2015 protector feet. Needs to be decent durability, I always wanted to play with him but always feared breaking a limb.

The sad reality is that the Inika kind of just exist in a perpetual quagmire of bad writing.
For example, the Toa Nuva were defeated twice. The first time, the Piraka tried to chuck them in the volcano, the second time they zamored them with antidermis and made them pour their elemental power into a bottomless pit until they drained themselves to death. The Inika were defeated/knocked out on at least three separate occasions, and in none of those cases did the Piraka make any effort to just execute them while they're down, even though it would've been the most in-character thing they could do and there's no reason for them not to.

An option that was immediately negated by the Piraka rushing down first.

Sadly I don't think there is one, to my knowledge Hero Factory stopped using those pieces when they phased out the brittle angleshit (except the glatorian heads, which oddly they kept using without replacing the joint until they switched to the 2-bar-hole heads) and thus they never made a remould.

Tip: do it all by yourself, then redo it 5 more times, before posting it here. Look up rebuilds and take inspiration while putting constraints on yourself, like by only using pieces that were available at the time of release (with preference for pieces used and introduced in the same line) and with piece counts similar to those of a standard canister set. Really pay attention to the style of each piece that you're using so that things don't clash, and don't deviate far from techniques you see used in official sets. If you want to think about articulation, focus on making sure what you do include works well, not on introducing new joints or whatever. Make your builds as solid and simple as you can.

You're genuinely not good at mocing, which is an experience thing, and seeking direct coaching from the threads isn't going to benefit you because you lack the eye for how to actually implement ideas well. You need to play around a lot more and develop your own sense of what works before unloading it all step by step on the thread. Your part choice for the Nuju arm was a step in the right direction, doing something unique with parts that come from the right period, but it still lacks style.

It feels weird excluding the Hordika arm without dressing up some other part of them. For a second I wondered if it'd be possible to use it to construct a torso that rotates at the waist to do some kind of spinning swim thing, but I don't think that'd be possible without being really complicated (or just turning Nokama into a Rahkshi).

The back fins also don't feel right, though you could go for something else aquatic and make her like a squid or crustacean or something. Crab Nokama with a fat claw that snaps using the gear function?

On the crab thing, a Visorak mandible would be easy to attach to the forearm, but is there a way to get one (or something else) on the upper arm to create the the right effect? Those Rahkshi staff-ends could also work as claw-like limbs if they sprouted off some Metrutoran arms.

From that angle, the thing on the chestplate is suggestive of a lower jaw, which is cool. An articulated jaw would go a long way to suggest the bestial nature of the Hordika compared to civilized full-masked society.

I like how the legs look on Nuju, and I think for Onewa that a shorter pair with Vahki legs and a 2-axle instead of the 3-axle at the ankle would give him a satyr look, which would be fitting. And the horns are nice, but it's a shame there isn't a better connection there for more options; could you try them in white?

I was a little hesitant about the idea of using the legs for 3/6 of the Toa, but the Phantoka/Mistika had a style split like that that at least worked well for the Makuta, so I don't think it'd be overdoing it.

The Hordika neck and the hollow ball are still in production too.
Also the Glatorian neck was last used in the second half of 2021, so I don't know if it's still in production or not.
And if you're interested in CCBS, Star Wars shoulder pads (though their new version with the hinge bars is more common now), that 2014 insect feet and that hexagonal Star Wars/CCBS addon are still used in recent sets.

So here's my current redux for the Mahri.
The reason why no tubing is because for some reason the required tubing isn't flexible in studio. Despite everything else being flexible. Weird.
Also Kongu, Nuparu, and Hewkii have different masks because their normal ones aren't in any studio packs, and the same goes for Hahli's claws.

I would change Matoro's chest armor to better resemble the mata foot - I don't think it's wrong to get rid of his hunchback (I personally like it but understand why others don't) - but I do think his kind of boxy chest was a good pull from it. I'd also swap out Nuparu's sword for something else, maybe a claw or gauntlet kind of like his inika form? Or a club, that might work. Also, I think you should move around Hewkii's colors a little bit on his arms. Maybe make the forearms that yellow/keetorange and the shoulder armor on both a different stone shade? Maybe a brown, might as well reuse brown since we don't have to please kids. Otherwise I quite like them.

Honestly Lego should have just done this.
Handle the Bionicle theme the same way they handle the Star Wars theme. Lego jumps all over the place within the Star Wars timeline/story to make new sets each year.
They could have done the same for Bionicle, no need to reboot the story. They can release things mentioned in the story: Rahi, toa, matoran, etc that never got a set.

The original star wars trilogy and prequels ended a long time ago, and Lego still plucks random things from these movies to make new sets from.

The thing is, the Nuva masks also let you use them all at once, as long as you're all together [and learning to work as a team was a major theme with the Mata]. What's more, Nuva masks theoretically scale better- there's no more Golden Masks to be had, but there are lots more Toa out there. If the plot had continued in the direction set up by Mask of Light- finding new Toa to team up with, like Takanuva- the Nuva Masks would have been invaluable, as their value over golden masks increases with every new ally.

I pulled out my bionicles and started assembling them (probably not going to do all of them but a significant amount regardless) because of this general and its pretty funny how "flipped" my thoughts on the sets are now as an adult versus how I saw them as a kid

Im now enamored with the toa metru which I quickly thought were inferior to the even more articulate hordika and inika as a kid for example, or how I now quite like the piraka, the barraki and the mahri (even though I only have a few of each, especially barraki where I only have carapar who I used to "hate")

I did this like a year ago. I had a bunch of my own creations as kid (they weren't very good) in a big bin. I took them apart and put together the various sets as intended. I then felt like I became one of those adult Lego builders that only build by the instructions.

I enjoyed the smaller guys like the Turaga more than I thought. Those were quickly taken apart when I first got them as a kid to make random stuff with the aprts.

He probably won't do anything other than these masks, unless you message him and can give him the models. The molds weren't casted from the actual masks, but were made using 3D model files, which is why they're missing the mask codes.
Apparently a buyer propositioned him if he could do bionicle masks since he was already doing other lego parts, and sent him the files.

Yeah Iron was my first preference for Turbo, it's definitely the most "urban" one thematically.
Not in love with making a yellow Toa of Stone, though, Lego kinda gave us PTSD by sharting skeetorange all over Hewkii. Even if it is true yellow. He's probably the hardest to settle on an element for when you're ignoring colours, cuz he doesn't really have a regional theme of his own. Probably just magnetism or sonics.

toa nuva are far worse than the inika. the phantoka/mistika lines were also utter garbage. While some of the Inika kind of suck, like three of them are good (Jaller or Matoro, Nuparu, Hewkii). Id say the biggest issue with the Inika are that they are just way too similar and basic with their look (aka why the best ones are the ones with some variation or standout qualities). The Inika would've been the coolest toa of all time if they had put all of the ideas and effort from the mahri already into the Inika, with solid masks and all kinds of tubes and shit, more varied builds and details with more technic-esque design aspects. First get better at making character/creature MOCs in general. Try copying techniques in MOCs you like, then combine and customize them trying to make your own builds. Get familiar with a lot of Lego pieces and connections. An important thing is: unlearn seeing things as symbols, focus on the shapes of your parts instead.
Then, study female anatomy and try to copy it using your parts. Look up those art tutorials about female anatomy on pinterest and google images. If you're trying to build a coomer MOC, I'd look at more stylized and sexualized depictions of female bodies, like anime girls or some hentai manga.

The Inika are just super boring. Bad masks (due to rubber), same builds, almost 0 variation on builds (only Nuparu and Hewkii differ even slightly), boring weapons (ugly annoying blaster with gimmicky swords that require batteries), it's just a mess. Is it me, or is Hydraxon waaaaaay overhyped? I'd even go so far as to say that he kinda sucks. Hydraxon is supposed to be this acrobatic Swiss Army Knife weapons master, but he can't even hold half the blades he's equipped with and his arms are awkward as fuck to pose. His wrist blades and Cordak blaster being on the back of his arm paired with poor elbow and shoulder articulation makes them super fucking cumbersome and un-versatile. Plus, his color scheme is pretty boring and there's a lack of consistency to his armor and blades. Paired with his edgy donut steel skull face, he comes across as a uninspired MOC rather than an actual set.

The biggest bane of bionicle is retarded "play functions" like the gears, and far more so the projectile launchers that infested the toa en masse. First off before anyone flips off I actually like the gears as a visual thing, so maybe im more just against the utter lack of articulation pre-metru, but it was also the definition of a "play function" and I would've far rather had visual rotating gears inside toa with zero effect on the actual articulation, let alone the limiting one that it always had

The hordika weren't too offensive with the rhotuka spinners yet (although they were gay and ugly and badly implemented), but then the piraka came along and established the idea that one hand should always be wasted on copypaste line specific stupid gimmick launchers for some mentally retarded timmy to scream at when he shoots his grandma in the eye with a zamor sphere. They had the right idea on evolving past having every character wield duplicate melee weapons (although Vakama already did this too and it was godlike, which ironically enough was a projectile weapon) but then they went into the worst possible direction with that revelation and it plagued bionicle until the end. Its like they flipped their brains around so by the glatorian era the agori fucks were brandishing cool tools in both hands and then the glatorian themselves had gay ass launchers shoved everywhere, usually the second hand

No I think you're onto something. The need to have a new projectile weapon every year was to the detriment of the line's actual improvement. I know Lego corporate must have thought they need a gimmick to sell kids on every year, but it didn't need to be that complex.
Make unique characters with enough to set them apart from one another, and you'd get sales. If you want to get people to buy in further, make worthwhile collectibles like the kanohi, krana, and kraata.
Play functions were necessary, but the shooter gimmicks were clearly the easy way out from having to design actual gear functions or other features that would take some thought process to throw together.

action figures existed for decades before bionicle and they didnt need both arms to flail around like some insane automatic industrial tool to be entertaining to kids. I dont recall literally *ever* giving a fuck about the play "functions" of bionicle involving knocking the masks off or anything equally idiotic. This isnt saying that I dont like technic functions but I dont correlate the two, something like sidoraks unfolding weapon arm are from a different galaxy to me than limiting the articulation of the first few lines because of weird gear functions, let alone the focus on the gay ass kiddy "guns" later on. The actual gun on hakann's hand always sparked my imagination infinitely more as a kid than the idiotic zamor launcher

I have to disagree, satan, he always looked a bit shit to me. He's the peak of "random weapons stuck all over the place haphazardly" (Icarax has this issue to a lesser degree, but he has other bigger problems). I never felt inclined to buy him when 2007 had other actually good titan sets. The only benefit of the set even existing is that his mask (in generic soulless silver) was rereleased in black for wave one HF and makes a good Great Kiril for a Toa Dume moc.

I think the big problem is that they're just too long. That one stud of difference makes them look gangly and uncanny compared to the simple socket hand, and the glatorian are already working with the maximum gangliness of the standard Inika build, plus tiny heads/masks.
Also, angleshit joints meant that those hand pieces were dead on arrival. I can't speak for anyone else, but after buying all the canister sets in the 2008 line there was zero chance I was going to get burned on more sets where half the joints snapped the second time you assemble/disassemble them, and that basically killed the franchise for me.

Just finished a MOC using only Mctorian pieces. I noticed that all official Mctorian combiner models used three or six Mctorian, but not only two. So I whipped this up with that concept in mind. It's nothing grand since I only had two Mctorian to work with, but I think it looks nice. it's a slightly taller Mctorian with four arms that can hold and launch two discs. I used Maku's mask since none of the official combiners utilized it. What do you guys think of it?

That was the only year I didn't completely follow, or got toys of. Looking back that personally makes me sad because it had some killer sets, and the story featuring Mata Nui was going places. A shame they never animated the second part featuring the great spirit robot fight between Mata Nui and Makuta.

Not him but what? Saying that the Inika are bad because theyre clones of eachother IS a bullshit complaint, the vast majority of bionicle lines are even more so "clones" of one another, but depending on a multitude of factors it works better or worse. Id say the biggest issues with the Inika are the megablocks ass big armor pieces that they pioneered, particularly the chest ones- that the head/ mask concept just sucks (although few of them still look good regardless, but not as good as they wouldve if done more traditionally) and that the weapons are kind of bad

This is also coming from someone who didnt actually read a shitload of the books or comics as a kid because I just didnt have access to them (I think I had a few issues from the metru era and only one from the voya nui arc), so I wasnt really exposed to the weaker aspects of the 2006 arc, and instead only got brief flashes of it through marketing material like commercials, the voya nui online game, hearsay and just seeing images. The new style felt cool and alternative in almost a forbidden and blatantly punk way for bionicle up until then, with things like spiked heads, chains, rainswept Toa rising from the mud like some creature of the black lagoon ass characters with their organic masks on this moreau horror island etc etc. In retrospect the line made a lot of mistakes by wanting to look so standardized, but it was basically the branching point where Bionicle mastered the "lego action figure" aspect of the series, and only then started experimenting with the configurations during the Barraki and the Mahri. There are still only two Inika that I think are simply shit (kongu and hahli). Simply replacing the chest pieces with something more creative which they did alot with the Mahri would've completely changed this line, and with regular masks they wouldve been insanely good

The toa metru are identical as fuck sans weapons and masks, and theyre still insanely good. The toa nuva are the same, except insanely bad, because the universal elements are the worst parts about them (and the masks). This just makes me think that if the universal aspects (big chest pieces, light up megablocks weapons, zamor launchers) are bad, and the masks (or genuine lack of them) are bad, it will break the camels back, and the other way around if all those are good
