They became ultra-propagandized by the Left.
Quality dropped.
Sales dropped completely.
Then comics revived by the Right as a reactionary movement.
Quality went from bad to decent to great.
Sales increased again.
Unfortunately everyone now sees the medium as propaganda tool. So the Right is only buying comics as a way to "support the cause" whatever it is. Nobody really cares about the stories themselves, it's like sports at this point: everyone has a team and they support their team no matter how the game is played. So as long as the supporters keep supporting, there's no real incentive to write a great story.
Same phenomenon is happening in Hollywood right now. "Doesn't matter you don't want to watch a movie, just go get a ticket and support the movie because it's was made by >our guys". I'm currently watching the newest Wes Anderson movie. Holy shit what a low effort piece of shit.
Propaganda is about getting the other side join your side, not constantly remind your side that they're on the same side.
