And Pet Rock was arguably the first mystery box since each rock was unique and different so it also had the appeal of wondering which color and shape you'll get. Also it was the mid-70's, at the time there wasn't really all that much available that was worth spending money on.

a funny gag that was also just a clumsy attempt to profit from a fad. The whole point of a pet rock is you find a cool rock, you put it in your pocket, you pull it out once in a while and go "man that is a cool rock." you don't treat it like a pet, it's a pet in the sense of a "pet name" like it's your personal rock that you found and you like. And unlike when you find a cool stick, you can keep it with you.

I miss my cool sticks so much. I had a perfectly straight and smooth one that I used to play a wannabe Donatello with in the backyard, even well after I grew out of it I was still sad to have to leave it behind when we moved.

Ahh, the joys of finding a perfect stick. I clean up straight branches to use as a walking stick when I go on trails and I leave them somewhere in sight at the end. It's always a sad goodbye 'cause the stick grows on me by the time I'm done hiking
