Was thinking about Metru shoulders again and wondered about a construction like pic related, which would give better articulation while also preserving the ability to hold a standard Metru forearm in the correct orientation. But it relies on a piece I'm not sure exists, being this 90-degree bit with two axle holes. I know there's one where the connections are pins, but obviously that wouldn't be stable.

So does that piece exist? Or are there similar alternatives with axles at 90 degrees to each other?

One problem is that the upper limb would gain length, but it'd at least be one way to incorporate the Metru shoulder armour in a simple build without too much extra Technic mess.

Actually, this could be done like pic related with parts I know exist. Though in both cases I'm not sure how much clearance the shoulder pad would give the joint to move.

You get some clearance, you can get a bit more moving the handle piece. In my experience the connectors with the rubber thing have awful clutch power on the top axle, which would be why when they appear in sets they are reinforced with more connections.

Thanks for mocking that up. Looks like there's at least a little bit of room for rotation up until the shoulder pad is hit, which actually isn't too different from a real shoulder if you discount the should beyond the joint. In a non-Metru moc you could use a shoulder connection like pic related for more freedom.

He won't make any other masks. The one who sent him the model files for the kraahkan/hau has an asking price of $60 per model file. Adding to the production of the mold which is also costly, he deemed it too expensive to make other masks.

Anyone have a good non-lego replacement for the old rubber bands?

I'm rebuilding my childhood rahi and all the rubber bands are dry and brittle and have lost all their give.

I don't feel like paying 1 buck a piece for a 20 year old rubber band on bricklink.

I'm pretty sure you could get some from a hardware store but I don't know how easy it would be to navigate finding the right one. Maybe a hobby store? Maybe you could check a toy hobby website that deals with parts like that other than lego stuff to see if people stock bulk rubber bands of specific lengths/diameters? Not sure.

I was talking to my wife last night about how silly the Kraata were, actually. I was telling her about how many silly variations there were - what, 42 different powers, each with 5 or 6 different molds, each with their own color schemes for the different Kraata and DIFFERENT color schemes for their associated Rahkshi? Highlighted different types of pieces to hopefully make it clear what's going on. Was pretty proud of it, though it does limit the upward movement of the shoulders - but as far as titan-size sets go, I don't mind too much. The 2015/16 toa's gearboxes using constrained balljoints was a real eye-opener for me as a moccer.

Yeah, that's a genuinely really nice technique. With the base mechanism---the gear box and the locked balljoints---I wonder if you could extend it in a titan-sized build to include rotation up and down. If you did it using single- instead of double-sockets, you could put a ball joint at either the base and then do pistons sort of like collarbones, but along a fixed axis. I'm trying to imagine a piston alternative for toa-sized builds, though the weight probably wouldn't matter and you could just lock it along the axis with some kind of cage.

I've had a pipe dream of making joints using multiple sockets constrained for each axis for a while. On my old pc I had some ginormous build that was godzilla-themed that used cross-bars and bohrok frames for the hips but it was just too difficult for my feeble brain to fix. I was watching the Bionicle Rebirth Chronicles fan-series again and forgot how horrible the script was.

Does anyone else passionately hate when a fanwork has characters say “toa mata” in-universe? It was originally a fanmade term to differentiate the og heroes from other teams since they didn’t have a team name other than “The Toa” until they became the Toa Nuva, so introducing them with a specialized title without the explanation to the audience that there are other toa other than them is beyond retarded.

Also Eljay is somehow an even worse VA today than he was back then

Sorry if I might be repeating what you've just said (which would depend on whether you're referring to people watching/reading the fanfic or in-universe characters, such as the matoran/tohunga), but it might bug me slightly if a fanfic did that yet still have the knowledge of other toa existing withheld from the Toa Mata, who would be sure to suspect there are other Toa elsewhere from having part of their title be part of their island's name.
(Again, I apologize if I'm just rephrasing what you said).

More than some things not making sense in a fanfic, what I really dislike is Bionicle characters being drawn as literally my mum's pet humans. That's (close to) the worst, that's creaturas putting their toys on their floors tier.
My favourite visual depiction of the characters is for them to look much like the sets, as seen with some of the comics (yes, even if organic portions of their bodies should probably be visible).

Different anon here. Personally, I think it would be ideal to go all-in with the absurd proportions and literal masks, showing the bio and the mechanical altogether while straying from the sets a bit. A bit like the Vrahno animations but without the movie face/masks. I really think there could be something special unlocked if someone treated the idea well.

Okay, so in-context this series was a retelling of the 2001 storyline as an Isekai with elements “inspired” by the Mega Man Battle Network games, with animation directly traced over footage from the anime and featured a handful of big members of the Bionicle community at the time.

The characters explain that the main human characters, who have no knowledge of this world or how it works, can fuse with their spiritual partners (the canon toa) to “transform into toa mata”, without prior mention of what a toa even is.
It’s a really awkward watch for a lot of reasons like the animation and mic quality, but the script is easily the worst

I had Makuta, most of his pieces are damaged now, some are lost. I still have his Kraahkan. I also have Brutaka and Toa Ignika with a few cracked ball sockets and technic pieces. The ball sockets are still useable though, and I own multiples of the cracked technic pieces.

Instead of fixing the fire titan I decided to finish this Po-Toa I have been chipping away at for about a week. He's... mid. I think he's ok. Nowhere near as inventive as my Le-Toa, a little too many pieces for a Toa-size moc (135), and maybe a bit clumsy. But I think he's fun. Originally started as a lanky Onu-Toa as a concept but I realized a Po-Toa would be a bit more fitting and I don't do those nearly often enough. 1/2

I think the powers of the mask make it possible, but it would never do it because it's against the whole "Destiny system" thing.

Same there, why should mask powers be ubiquitous? I've always been of the opinion that far fewer characters should be able to use them. Only a couple titan types - Axonn and Brutaka sure, but Sidorak? Lariska? Seriously? I also don't think Turaga should have mask powers. Sacrifice should be a sacrifice.

I can see the angle you're working on, I just prefer them to be more like legendary artifacts or mythical items with only select individuals able to access them. This looks really nice. The colours are really good, I like your limb constructions (the extended upper arm is really nice), and the reversed Makuta torso is cool for producing a unique frame.

That said, I find it a bit boring that despite being a set above canister levels, it's still restricted to basic Ignika style articulation. The unique use of the Makuta torso kind of makes up for its shoulder limitations, but I'd like to see if you could come up with a more dynamic shoulder construction that builds off of that piece.

It also feels like you're overusing the Visorak(?) body piece when you use it in the torso. From the torso looks especially weak design-wise when viewed from the rear, and I think would benefit from something more complex or at least some padding; pieces that could fill out his back like shoulder blades could help, and could help build up a functioning shoulder.

I didn't see your post til now, interesting. I think those are very reasonable criticisms... I was considering making a more unique shoulder mount but found it difficult to fit it in without looking too bulky, as I wanted him to appear slender. And you're definitely right about the visorak chassis being the weakest element of the torso - I attempted to integrate it a bit better in this new revision but I don't doubt some extra padding would produce more favorable results. Feel free to let me know how you feel about this revision (especially if it's a step down in any way from the previous). My main goal was to drop parts-count, as I like to aim for canister-style sets, maybe canister*1.1, but this design can definitely still use improvements.

Regarding wanting to keep the shoulders slim, that's fair. I'd like to believe that there's some kind of minimalist shoulder mount that would improve things, and it'd be interesting to see if it could be pulled off, but there would necessarily be added bulk. Torso articulation could probably be incorporated while keeping the silhouette slim, if not the same.

It's an obnoxious level of power creep that would have killed the story from day one, because they would have instantly had to start with ridiculously powerful protagonists and adversaries instead of the relatively grounded setting we got on Mata Nui. And forget the part about beleaguered tribal villagers fighting just to hold on to their minimal patches of dirt and fighting off huge hostile wildlife with bamboo throwing discs and animal steeds, because either they can fight back on their own or their enemies are so powerful they can't even mount a defense.
There are many parts of the "canon" that benefit from being fixed or ignored, this isn't one of them.

Friend gave me a bag of old parts that had about 3/4ths of a toa vakama set he found cleaning his garage. Thought I'd do something with it. Kind of low effort since the only thing I really did was make the torso and upper arms and change out the thigh armor and feet for silver but I imagine it as a between stage after keetongu changed the toa hordika back into toa metru but before they give up their toa power and become turaga. Vakama can have a little color change to reflect mastering his darker side, as a treat.

While you probably couldn't make the rubber pieces load-bearing, you could probably go down a route like the 2008 makuta body and make a rubberized item with axle holes that attaches to it to fill out space. Bonus if it doubles as "armor" elsewhere on the figure and you can attach more armor to it due to axle holes on either side. Then each glatorian set would be a lot more rounded with 3 to 5 of the rubber pieces per canister.

All this blur makes my eyes feel funny.
Fuckhueg fist is nice, and so was balancing it with the flashy launcher. And I know you're just sticking to the Slizer colours (plus you're limited by the parts), which is respectable, but fuck do I hate the black and red. Even grey would be better than black. But regardless, your build is sick.

I'd ditch the red Technic sticks on the front of his thighs though. Those Slizer limbs (along with most of the early Toa parts) look nice enough on their own, and the piece just hides those details. The colour scheme may be wack, but it's no worse getting rid of that extra bit of red; it may even make it feel more cohesive to remove them, but that's just a hunch.

Without a doubt my favorite redesign for Bionicles in animation comes from this fucking video. It has all the elements I like from the movie's redesign with one small change for the Toa and the Matoran. Which is that the masks are Masks, not just their faces. Unlike in the movies were their eyes were on the makes, you can see on Vakama and Vhisola that their eyes are behind their masks, which is just such a nice change.

Also, the Vahki Redesign is 10/10

Because the knee joint is obstructed by the vahki eyes, you might want to bake in some slightly different articulation. Consider attaching liftarms to the three pin holes in the thighs and attaching a socket to those - it would also space the legs wider. I think you're probably right about the thighs, I did that kind of thing on the others just to flesh them out a bit but he's got more of a lanky hunchback look anyway (like Onua classic or Matoro Mahri) so I can probably get away with bare thighs. I feel like he ended up with too much red anyway, the original slizer colour scheme being more black with red than red with black. I was actually on the fence about whether to give him black feet or red, but I already used black for Eleni and Jajetta so I didn't want to overuse it. The red helps draw the eye more to his bulky extremities anyway.

Any piece with a socket, yes. Easiest way might be the 5l double socket by using two pin/axle pieces. Only problem is armoring, but that's what the creative process is for lmao. Alternatively you could use a liftarm like a 5l thin liftarm so you'd only have to worry about the ball joint up top.

And regarding colour, it may have been better to leave red only as a highlight and focus on a majority-black colour scheme. The dominant red is really garish, and even if black is boring it'd help to make him sleeker, which would help balance the really wide and bulky build of his legs and limbs.

When I say "sleek" I don't mean to trim him down physically, it's that the colour scheme is brutal to look at, especially on top of the bulkiness. Doesn't flow very well and it makes it hard to see all of the details in him. If you look here >>10630454 you can see that the original Slizer model had an emphasis on black while red was left as a highlight. I think the moc looks too cluttered because both colours are used everywhere, rather than being blocked out for emphasis.

The only things whose copyright is still up and cannot be distributed is TLR and Journey to One. but the rest?
Miramax doesn't exist anymore, movies aren't being redistributed anywhere officially.
The comics came free with the Lego magazine so they don't count.
All the games were free except for the console ones which don't have their roms up in Biomedia so no law is being broken.

Despite how dismissive Lego might be about Bionicle as a whole, i'm glad they are also pretty hands off about it, to the point they finally are letting Faber go out and show so much unreleased material and concept art for G1 and G2 that his did.

Hey, not bad! a big improvement from your previous ones. The only things I'd nitpick here are the knees (just would do something slightly differently - maybe just moving the sockets to the top and putting them 90 degrees to resemble digitigrade legs or something) and the tailfoot (which is kind of silly to use as a support tool in the first place but I would have personally reinforced it) but notably these are both style critiques and not structural ones. Amazing that the builder went to so much effort to attach a jillion fragile little connections that don't hold up in real life at all, then probably spent at least half an hour (minimum, I'm being very generous here) posing the thing to stand up straight, let alone hold a pose, but was perfectly okay with just reusing Toa Mata Nui hands.

I actually had a dream once that I met a Cluster B style tomboy with reality warping powers. The dream felt like it was 10 hours long and a lot of unrelated shit happened, but for like 30 minutes I was with this weird girl. Putting them into any type of order is irrelevant because theyre at the bottom of the barrel for me (but my barrel doesnt even acknowledge the existence of real dogshit like 2008) so ill just talk about the mata and grade them instead

The thing about the mata is that they actually had all kinds of cool quirks that almost make me think of moc style greebling/ oddities per toa that give them character. They completely sell the mata nui theme (this skeletal robotic biomechanical thing with some type of voodoo ass totem mask). Sometimes they're symmetrical, sometimes theyre asymmetrical, and the gear functions are more varied as a result too.

Actually I take that back too, I cant even put them into order because they're all good. I think the thing that surprises me the most is that the older I get the more I start to think that Tahu is probably the most boring one, but even that's just because of the context surrounding him rather than the build itself. Pohatu or Lewa probably compete for top 1

Also I'll slightly elaborate on the nuva instead of just purely shitting on them. First of all, Gali Nuva was my first ever bionicle and I grew up during that period so my appreciation of both the mata and the metru over them are something I developed now as an adult. I'd say outside of the obvious "remake" issues of the Nuva (while I'd say being inferior to the thing they're remaking) is that they didn't improve enough from the mata.

They still have garbage articulation and the heads still don't move, which sticks out like an even more sore thumb because of the smoother and more concealing effect that the armor plates give. They seem more organic and smooth all over with the masks, the new limb molds/ bohrok limbs with rounder shapes and the blatant silver "armor" on top of the apparent body. It's insane to me that lego clearly knew it was an issue as they felt the need to photoshop greater articulation onto the artwork even back then for the mata, but they still didn't actually fix is with the nuva which was basically a chance to redo the mata line to an extent

I think the thing at faut here is how straightorward the lines are. Like the faux Rahkshi legs are just straight lines (very plain like the sides of the shoulder armor) while the original had triangles. Or the feet feeling to streamlined, because you can clearly see this triangular greeble while normal bionicle feet would interrupt a shape or give make it go through something more bulbous
