I've bought for both reasons.
But there's usually a motivation of I like the IP at least a little, otherwise I probably wouldn't be aware of (toy) in the first place
I've also bought one or two ages ago because /toy/ hyped them up, sometimes worth it, sometimes not.
Worth it: deluxe class Cybertron prime
Not worth it: KO Drossel, and not because it was a KO. She was unobtanium hot robolady and I needed one, got one and just didn't care about her.
