I am not certain on the multitrack running, but it would not hurt to pick up another. At my local shop, a Bachmann or Tyco power pack is $3.00 "as-is". There are probably similar deals in your area.

One supply for two DC locomotives will make both run a bit slower and harder than they would otherwise. It'll work (assuming the motor speeds are close enough) but it's not going to be fun.
But old power packs are perfectly fine, if they still put out the 18ish volts at an amp or so. I have power supplies older than I am, and they work just fine for a DC loco.

Unless there's something catastrophically wrong with it that makes it run terribly, that Rock Island diesel by Walthers is going to quickly become your new favourite locomotive. I've got a very similar one in NYC colours and I love it. It'd be my favourite if not for the sentimental value of the Atlas RS-2 my dad got me.

As for getting them running, check out Kato's line of Unitrack. You can get their basic set with an oval of track+power pack for like 60$ or 70$ on Trainworld.com, or for... I think it might be 100$ or 120$, you can get the basic oval set plus a passing siding. They also sell the basic oval set with a modern diesel locomotive plus a handful of freight cars, I think those are maybe 180-200$ if memory serves me. Just in case you wanted another engine and some rolling stock while you're buying track.

Kato’s ‘starter’ freight cars are actually all Japanese prototypes done up in more American looking colors. I believe all the GEVO sets include these + the tank car in their little F7 train packs.

Here's something also pretty interesting if you're on a tight budget and can build the tracks yourself instead. One guy uses brass strips, another has an even cheaper method using cheap Home Depot hangar wire and soldering them together to make tracks.

Why does it seem like cities get picked at random to get models made? In fact, I notice subways and streetcars in general seem to have lackluster offerings in comparison to things like road switchers and steam.

I think most of the manufacturers still making trains are making passable products.
The pricepoint of the model is more important, because cheap shit is cheap shit regardless of which brand makes it.

The thing with the LIRR is that you're either stuck with EMUs, EMUs, Bilevels pulled by an ugly P42 ripoff, or EMUs. And with Amtrak you can at least run it alongside any of the other Big 4 freight carriers in the US and be "accurate", the only railroad you can really run alongside the LIRR and have it be accurate is the MTA and the New York and Atlantic, unless you're modeling Sunnyside which lets you run Amtrak/NJ Transit stuff too.

Yes it's a busy line, but it's also a railroad that only runs on an island that's 120 miles wide.

DC still has its place in the model railroading world. If you're just doing something simple on a 4x8 and don't plan on running more than one engine at a time you don't NEED DCC on your layout. Yeah the sounds are fun to mess around with but so long as people run trains on their carpets around trees each year there's still a market for plain old DC setups.

I've had HO layouts for 20 years and never got into DCC.
When I was young, I couldn't afford the DCC price tag.
Now I can afford it, but the finickiness of installing decoders means I'm much more likely to buy an engine already with DCC in it, at a higher price point.
Meanwhile, I've got like 6 DC block hobby transformers and a bunch of lose track, and no DCC supplies and controllers.
DC will be around forever, just like conventional AC operation for O gauge.

Seems like every decade there comes a newcomer to O Gauge railroading with the stated aim of decent quality yet affordable models suited more for the toy end of the hobby. Menards seems to be taking the place of K-Line and Williams. Hopefully they don't get absorbed by Bachman or Lionel.

Generally from what I've seen, the more modern stuff uses much thicker measurements for the gears, and don't break as easily. Generally you'd want to clean out gears and relubricate them every so often too, to keep friction from wearing them down too much.

I've heard of people going back to DC just for the simplicity of it all sometimes. Going all the way back means no computerized parts at all, which usually makes those locomotives way more repairable to the average guy too. I doubt DC is going away anytime soon, or ever.

Amtrak has the issue of having like 6 different paint schemes across their varying fleets so it's hard to find certain versions of things if you want a matching set. For example nobody makes a Phase III E60, however I can find amfleets for days. The inverse is also true. Phase II amfleets are really uncommon, especially prototypical ones (the Walters kits are meh). Come to think of it Phase II anything that isn't the E60 is kinda rare.

Any new Lionel. They are not worth the price tag, in my opinion. Also, The Bradford Exchange is another one to avoid, but otherwise every brand has their purpose.

Frankly, I would recommend for you to go with Marklin, Fleischmann, LGB, Busch, Piko (except for their MyTrain line), Roco, AZL, MicroTrains, Atlas, Athearn and Walthers (just avoid their track). I would recommend Hornby but their newest stuff has been poor quality, so search for some of their offerings from the mid-late 2010s and maybe stuff from 2020 and 2021.

You know the fun thing about O gauge trains is that most of the time all the junkier models and sets you find under the table at shows really need is a good cleaning and a simple rewiring and they are up like new again. I got a set of blue stripe Santa Fe coaches from the post war era and all they needed some new bulbs and a wipedown with a damp cotton cloth.

To be fair it's the same thing with HO and probably N as well, although N is really small and awkward to work with for older people. I've gotten wild deals on HO stuff that just needed a commutator cleaning.

I wouldn't count The Bradford Exchange since they're not really a Model Train manufacturer, they just use some old Bachmann and Life-Like molds and pump out novelty trains painted in tacky colorschemes in a subscription-based model. No one trying to get into the hobby is going to pay 4 installments of $90 to get an engine, a tender, a coach, and a flat car with a loop of Power-Lok track when you can find an actually decent Bachmann starter set for half the price.

I second the Marklin notion, but only if you're actually in a part of Europe that actually has it readily in stock. The only US place I know that stocks their HO stuff in decent quality is Reynaulds and boooooy is it pricy there compared to what domestic HO costs.

I found this goofy toy train in the flea market yesterday, it's a kid's ride on train but unlike other ones I've seen it actually does look like a locomotive. I'm gonna modify it and make it longer, it's already 31 inches long and bigger than G scale.

Hornby's stuff varies a lot (partly because they use multiple different factories), it's worth checking out uk rail modelling forums and seeing what they have to say on a specific model
then again that's good advice for any model train regardless of manufacturer

Ok lads, I got a layout question for ya.

See this area circled in red? It sets on the middle of the two main parts of my layout (The lower part is gonna have a small town) and I have no idea what the fuck I actually wanna do with it. It's definitely "Small industry", but what kind of industry is it? I don't have a ton of space between the siding and the side of the hill here (Like 2 inches on average). So what should I do?
>Junkyard (Idea I'm liking the most so far, though I'd need to hunt down some sort of crane to load the scrap)

What you could do is construct a loading ramp that would be even with the side of a flatcar. You mention that there is a nearby coal mine, which means they would have need of importing or exporting heavy and/or bulky equipment. Having a small area of to the side so cars could be loaded or unloaded without interference on the main line would be realistic.

Are Kato's USRA Heavy Mikados supposed to have traction tyres? I bought one recently, and its pulling power is not what I expected. But I've never seen any undercarriage photos with traction tyres, and the wheels don't seem like they have grooves cut for them either. So, if they don't, is there a way I can increase its tractive effort without traction tyres?

I'm finally in a financially stable position where I can actually set aside money to create a layout but now I'm not so sure. I've got a project car to work on too, but I want some kinda model railroad.

I posted here in the past expressing interesting in building either an Sn2 or On2 scale micro layout featuring electric, and gasoline motive power inspired by various traction railways and Junior Yamachi's work on an older forum (I can't remember the name of). Picrel is a random Sn2 locomotive I found. The benefit would be the scale allows really tight curves and if done right could have a fairly compact layout with decent operations... or explore microlayouts.

The other idea is building an N scale railroad. For the longest time I'd been enamoured by N scale Appalachian model railroads with like ~18-30 car coal drags, preferably set in the 50s with early diesel traction. But this seems a bit less financial sound and would require much more space.

Any thoughts on pros/cons of these?

I'm basically doing that type of layout (East-coast mountainous area with a coal mine as the main industry) myself in a 4'x9' space, you can definitely get long drags like that (You can fit 4 36' coal hoppers in a 12" space so a 20 car train would be about 6' long including an A/B unit and a caboose), so yeah you'd need a decent sized layout if you want to get some solid operations in. That or you could go the route this guy went

I guess that's sort of the appeal to me. I don't like things because they're easy, but rather because they're hard. It gives me the satisfaction of having a very personalized layout with rolling stock and locomotives. Picrel is one of Junior Yamachi's works that is a big inspiration for me. IIRC a lot of his Sn3 locomotives run on modified Kato Pocket Line steeplecab frames.

Sorta related to my above reason, I'm very much drawn more towards scratch-building and proto-freelancing as much as possible so even if I buy ready-to-run rolling stock I'd absolutely spent an excessive amount of time superdetailing, kitbashing, and panting every locomotive to fit a fictional railway. I love the idea of freelanced and proto-freelanced railways and would love to build a coal hauler from the 50s. I have some older MR magazines that have some interesting alternative layouts you can make out of 4x8 plywood sheet that involve cutting it in interesting ways that I thought would be worth taking inspiration from.

I say maybe do the storage siding for the coal mine, but have a maintenance platform for scenery. It should be a fairly easy scratchbuild if you use sheet plastic (e.g Evergreen sheets) or wood and some piano wire (the kind used on balsa model airplane landing gear) for the handrails.

As another suggestion, if you do not mind paying out the nose for them, Busch make some mine wagons for their HoF "Feldbahn" line, which could make for some nice added scenery if you either conceal the magnetic strip on Busch track or use Rokuhan or Atlas Z track instead.

HO/OO (same track). Most countries with a large rail system have an ho model of at least one of their locomotive.

O gauge is a close second and n is a somewhat distant third.

Hello everyone. Im at a standstill with my new project. I need an airbrush, when I get home on monday im going to go to the hobby shop and get me one. I am building a model of MQT 3408. I used an old Athearn Blue Box SD40 that I stripped the paint off of, a Cannon & Co thinwall cab kit and the interior as well, added some grab irons, snow plow, MU hoses, brake hoses, a horn, a bell, and a few other small details. This is the first model ive ever made myself except for kits. Im pretty happy with how its coming along

Thank you. I cant do electronics at all. All of my models that didnt have DCC I had to drop off at my LHS for them to install it. I just cant figure out how to take any models above a blue box apart. Pic is a boxcar I did. Granted its very easy since its all one color, but pretty happy with how the weathering turned out

If you're willing to put up with movable pilots, and stick to less prototypical engines, you can do a bunch with 3 foot radius curves.
But if you do O, you'll run in space issues for operations, like switches and turnouts and crossovers.

ho scale is the best. perfect size. high availability. majority of the people into model railroading are into ho scale so most layouts will be ho scale sized layouts. also best pricing relative to what youre buying, bigger trains can cost a lot lot more and smaller trains cost a lot when you consider you pay ho scale price for them and you are getting less.

Depends on what models and brands you're buying, really. For example, you can get a Union Pacific F3 in N scale that comes with DCC/Sound and an unpowered B unit for $280 from Broadway Limited, while the HO version with the same bells and whistles will be like $320. A Bachmann N scale Hudson would be $275 while an HO one is $285. Keep in mind this reflects for just the brand-new models, and that older N stuff tends to be cheaper than older HO stuff from what I've seen

Ehhhh, it's really more what you want to do with your layout than anything. At the end of the day you're choosing between either having a larger selection of models to pick from with less space to run them or the ability to run longer trains in the same amount of space on a larger layout with a smaller variety of models to pick from.

I see your typo. Yeah, but personally, I prefer the thought of Z gauge since you can create a loop in a size not much larger than a suitcase (though that is pushing Z to its limits. I have little room and N is barely an option for me (though I think I could make it work). Plus I am more into Euro rolling stock, which Z has a quite a bit of at prices that I would pay (though mostly for secondhand items). It is easier to also make any scratch builds look passable (though harder to make them look perfect) in this size too.
