Anon, I joke because I'm in an IPMS club and I see the kind of stuff most of the people who build "actual scale models" do. They buy kits from hobbyshows or ebay that have been passed around as part of 3 different people's backlog before them, collect a dozen tools they'll rarely if ever use, but stuff like a $25 brass gun barrel for their tank kit off ebay that looks exactly like the plastic barrel the tank came with and you won't be able to tell the difference once it's painted, get autistic with looking up the correct colors and markings and then end up spray painting it with cheap paints like krylon anyways, and then if they weather it they either slop on an oil wash or heavily drybrush it. And then they proudly bring it to the next 5 shows they go to where they enter it into an extremely specific category where it wins an award because there were only like 3 entries for that category anyways. And in a group of a couple dozen of these "actual modelers" only one or two of them are actually more than decent and actually do stuff like modding or scratchbuilding or airbrushing.

They're exactly the same as the current gunpla community with the only two exceptions being that the average age is about 30 years older and they go to more shows than gunpla builders.

Pretty new to gundam/gunpla
I build an EG like a year ago and it was fun
Recently been working on an HGUC Z'gock but honestly? I fucking hate sanding, but I don't want nub marks. Even using a hobby knife there are still marks/blemishes when I remove what's left of the runner. My favorite part is building these little dudes and snapping it all together, is there any way I can reduce sanding time without sacrificing quality? Or even how to cut better?

some single edge nippers can help you cut closer to the part reducing the amount of material to remove.
alternatively/additionally you can remove more material with a hobby knife. more grits means less sanding, 800 -> 1000 -> 1500 goes pretty fast.

micro power sander or handheld/micro sander. its an electronic sander. basically a handheld dremel tool. just put the sandpaper/sanding sponge on the end and basically does the sanding for you very quick.

the chink sanders have lower speed so you might want to put higher grits sanding paper to compensate

Got the Flame toys soundwave. I don't like how different the head sculpt is so I ordered a cheap soundwave figure off ebay and I'm going to recast and modify the head from it. Might also recast the chest hatch in clear resin as well since out of the box it's opaque.

I fixed the front and started patching holes. The barrel need to be grinded slightly at the tip. I found some use for a few EG Strike photo etch parts.

Does the HGUC Kampfer still hold up despite it being from 2008?

Hey folks. I need some help here.

I just picked up a can of Army Painter Brainmatter Beige primer from my hobby shop. Did about 3 coats on my Cross Frame Dark Magician Girl while letting it dry for a few mins in between after having soaked the kit in some warm soapy water the previous day. I've seen people talk about how they've gotten a chalky porous texture after applying, which is exactly what I have. I don't mind it so much because the pieces on the kit are large enough for it to not be a problem. The issue I'm having though, is that when I rub my finger on it, it wipes off like a fine dust. Like I'm rubbing chalk dust off a chalk board. I finished spraying it about 4 hours or so. It's 17°c outside and no humidity. Stood about 20 cm away from the parts while spraying while doing brief short wisps from side to side as the can instructed.

Did I fuck up my entire kit? I did a test piece the other day the exact same way, and none of these issues are there, not even the chalky texture (however I did leave that piece to cure overnight before handling it) so I don't know if/what I did wrong. I can live with the horrendously porous texture, I just want to know if the residue that comes off is going to be a problem for painting.

I typically start with a Simple Green or Purple Power bath. Let it sit for like an hour and see if it starts coming off. If that fails I'll use some lacquer thinner on a shop towel. Once stripped Dawn soak. Use Tamiya or Mr Hobby spray primer.

the texture is because the paint particles have dried midair, which can actually just be wiped off with a cotton swab/lightly sanded like I did in this project.

E12 shoe parts? actually don't even bother cleaning it and seam weld it to the other piece instead and remove the primer while sanding. unless you are not going to seam weld.

I primed my entire kit with this (minus the skin), those were just an example. Which is why I'm sweating bullets at the thought of having to bathe the entire thing in pain remover. I do not intend to seam weld.

I would honestly just strip it with isopropanol/hobby grade paint remover instead of sanding/wiping everything if that's what you're thinking, acrylic primer just isn't as good as lacquer.

Well, I don't know if mr hobby primer is lacquer based, but I try to stay away from as much toxic voc or things that leave odoors for extended periods of time because I have a rather sensitive immune system due to some health issues. I don't do any spraying without a respirator anyway because I know all cans have that gunk in them, but all I can say is, that the last time I used something like tamiya spray cans, I could smell the odor on my kits for weeks before it went away. Whereas with this army painter stuff, it already doesn't have any odours I can smell.

I'll take a little extra elbow grease if it means less exposure to chemicals. If all I have to do is wipe the residue off with a swab or something, I feel like that's less work than having to strip everything then re-coat it with another acrylic primer, wouldn't it? Like it will still hold the paint fine and won't rub off or what have you, right?

That tells me you severely overused whatever you were using (or you have exceptionally bad ventilation). There is simply not enough smelly stuff in a proper (very thin) paint coat to last for a day, much less for weeks.

Yup, so I keep getting dust rubbing off on my hands when handling these pieces. I tried soaking a spare piece in alcohol last night and it seemed to come off easily enough. I guess I'll strip the entire thing today. Going to go out and get some tamiya spray primer as I couldn't find mr hobby locally. I don't want to risk another blunder so I'll stick to the recommended primers so I don't have to do this a second time.

How long should I leave them in the alcohol? I left the test piece I did from an old kit over night so I don't care what happens to it, but that's probably over kill and probably not good for the plastic.

the thing about isopropanol and similar is that it doesn't hurt plastic without stress. >>10629148 this deck has been submerged in isopropanol for at least 5 days now and I've had some pieces for literal months.

Today was a bit frustrating, somehow snapped the yellow piece as I was trying to attach the left arm. But thankfully it was fixed by using a toothpick to poke Tamiya Cement between the cracks. Between the RG Zeta and RG Crossbone X1, the RG Exia is somewhere in between when it comes to smaller RGs with fragile little pieces. I wouldn't really recommend it, but the Crossbone X1 I totally would recommend to anyone looking for a cool and fun RG kit. It's easily my favorite kit.

What's off? Looks ok just not fully mirror-standard gloss. If you want it to be glossy there are many ways i.e. build up more layers of the clear paint, gloss clear coat(s), add retarder, wax it if it's the topmost coat etc.

1. Your picture is not in focus enough.
2. Your clear blue might be dissolving your metallic? Or your metallic coat might not have been too shiny to begin with? Hard to tell from your picture though.

You should be able to do it fine over a high shine silver. Thats almost exclusively what I see when watching nips videos. Chrome is definitely easier but its almost always more fickle and prone to damage.

Literally that. You want a slightly wet coat that will level, not one of those thin powdery coats that would never give you shine. In other words, it's better to spray more than to spray less.
You need to feel it, it's hard to explain precisely with words, and your trigger finger needs to feel loose, not stiff, as you spray.

I'd go the opposite direction. Ignore the idea of adding dark lines and add highlights instead.
I think you did go a bit overboard with the shading, particularly from the front. Shadows should have directionality, and it doesn't make a ton of sense for the back to be very darkly shaded with the front being shaded heavily as well. I like how the back looks, and personally would just tone down the front to be thinner dark areas.

I agree with your thoughts on adding highlights, but unfortunately, I can't really go any lighter, the yellow I used is pretty saturated/bright in real life, I tried adding in a lighter value with the exact colour you used, but it just ends up making the areas not in shadow look blown out. Dangit.

The vents are surprisingly all color separated on both shoulders. The stripes are not, but that's actually a decent place for a sticker, smooth and with a gentle curve. That doesn't bother me at all.

The sticker sheet is fairly minimal. All small shit except the stripes, maybe 10-13 stickers total.

Alright, so I finally finished my first real build. It's my second build ever, my first was a HG RX-78-2, the newest one is the RG Sazabi.

I'm honestly really unhappy with how it came out. I made a lot of little mistakes, like I didn't shave down the nubs as much as I should have, I think I was just impatient. There are spots where I tried to sand it down but they looked scuffed. Half of the stickers don't really look good, and it's because the actual sticker panel itself didn't seem to fit that well into where it's meant to be applied. Like the dimensions proper of the sticker/decal whatever you call it, seem to sort of overlap the actual sculpt details.

The most fatal mistake I made, though, was on the sideskirt. I had a hard time applying one of the stickers so I tried to pull the piece off of the sideskirt, but I pulled it the wrong way and the clasp got stressed so it's now a really loose joint. I tried to remedy it by applying glue to help tighten, but it's just barely enough to keep the piece from falling off.

The attempt to spray it also wasn't good. This was my first ever attempt at applying top coat, and I didn't do it well. There are a lot of spots where it wasn't applied evenly, and I noticed that some of the panel line I did soaked up and started leaking down, namely the brown marker. It looks pretty bad in a few spots. It also coagulate in certain areas, so the overspray now looks like gunk piled over certain parts. Certain details I should have done more carefully, because like the visor is now matte and I should have taped it over or something. I didn't want it to look like this.

My mistake was going at it on this kit this early. I should have practiced more on cheaper ones. I like the kit a lot, but I need more experience.

This is generally why I advise people to stay away from RGs (and their favorite designs) as one of your first couple of kits. Not because their hard, but because they tend to cost more and can lead to this feeling of frustration.

That being said learning how to top coat well is straight up just a practice thing. The stickers are also going to show a bit with RGs, so if you want them to look flat you want to get waterslides. Also Gundam Marker markers need to dry for a few days before top coat in my experience. Pour type and other methods are generally good to go after 24 hours.

That's what I thought myself, but when I looked at pre-orders for other upcoming models, none of them have/had a shipping total that astronomically high. Even ones that are without a doubt bigger kits. So if that's the case, this is the first time I've ever seen it. None. Metallics do not look good topcoated because most topcoats dissolve metallic coat slightly (but enough to affect the appearance). TS-21 is a lacquer, it doesn't need protection (at least any protection short of clear resin will be as scratch-prone as the metallic itself).
If you want the metallic to look shiny you polish the black undercoat before applying the metallic. If you want it to look matte, you use semi-gloss black undercoat.

If your colors are glossy and you want flat finish, clear flat coat is still necessary. But adding a clear lacquer coat on top of another lacquer coat does not improve scratch resistance.

To give another opinion...

Ask the board first about the specific kit you're intending to buy. Figure-rise is technically fine as far as plastic quality, tolerances, etc. because of course it is, it's Bandai after all. But I was not pleased with the sculpts and articulation on many of them. A lot of the Kamen Rider ones felt janky to me once built. A lot of their anime sculpts are kinda trash, especially in the face, but sometimes in the body too. The Dragonball line, for example, only started improving recently, for a long time it was only producing fuck-ugly sculpts.

Looks are subjective of course, but that's my take on the line. I approach Figure-rise kits with a bit of caution now. However, the sub-lines Figure-rise Mechanics and Amplified, are both very good. It's just the standard ones that I've had a lot of bad experiences with.

Guys do plastic backing decals operate differently from paper backed ones? Am i s'posed to soak it in some kind of special tamya 40$ decal-syrup or are they just "expired" from twenty years of rotting in a box? Help my boy he can't survive without his scale affirming tampos

nah, he's specifically talking about the dry transfer decals that come with older MGs (Gogg included). they come on a sheet of thick, clear plastic (not the green wax paper backed stickers).

Yeah, afaik, no MG kits come with wet decals. Exception being first edition Providence, iirc. And some other limited productions.

MGs have fallen way out of favor. As stuff like Origin MSD and RG have shown, it's the era of greeble. People love surface detail, and a lot of UC MGs just look fucking boring once you slap on all the armor panels and cover up the internal frame. Shit, since Bandai stopped trying, the internal frames aren't even interesting to look at anymore. MGs are just a bad bet on every front, they're one of the least appealing options now IMO. There are just cooler and better things happening in other grades/lines.

So after working on my amplified wargreymon for about a week, I finally get the painting done and assemble my kit, only to have his butterfly joint snap off on me. A stupid oversight on my part for not sanding down the peg. I'm pretty gutted over it. Is there anything I can do to salvage this? Or any way I can somehow get a replacement part?

I've tried the tamiya plastic cement and let it cure overnight., but it wasn't strong enough.

This is the broken piece.

Ok guys I've realized my mistake and now know the difference between "dry transfers" and "decals". I always thought dry transfers were just some slant-speak mistranslation of "water slide transfer", in hindsight i was being a massive dumb ass but you already know that from reading my post. Managed to get all of the transfers i wanted on him par one, can't share pics of him now but he's painted like pic rel

Now whenever bandai makes mg's that aren't p-buttfuckers they show it up like it's some big event like they're reinventing the goddamn wheel, but in reality there not much more than 2.0's with more greebles (it makes the normies feel like they accomplished something when they snap it together in an afternoon). The Zaku i, powered gm, gm striker, Gp02a, ext ext all need 2.0's or re100's p-cocksuckers need my neet bux (can you tell i'm not a big fan of made to order kits?). Jesus this is getting long tldr new gundam fans are mush head zoomers that can't stand a hobby project that lasts longer than 3 hours and old mg's still have their place in the fandom
