yeahb ut a waist swivel wouldn't cause the stripes to stop lining up. when he puts his legs together, that's still the hood.. it's not as if both knees swivel, thereby reversing the pattern. you can see the outside of the legs is the outside of car mode, front of legs is top of car mode.. no matter how you slice it, that is one discontinuous stripe
and another silver-painted face from what I can only think are colorblind color layout guys

Got it.
The shins flip open and the whole yellow piece pivots so the cut out at the top of the knee meets the foot.
Then the waist swivels and the abdomen unaccordions a bit while the chest flips up, the the two halves clam shell together.
The front of his legs/crotch will be dragging on the ground

The TF scene in Japan has always been pretty obscure from what I've seen. Mostly male anime otaku would be the ones watching them at the time if they were adult fans, and those were usually drawn to doing more cool robots and doujin art of the girls. Though some kids robot anime did attract some fujos if it had shota protags, it was like this for a lot of the scene. Sadly, most fanart from the time that wasn't archived were on individual artist and doujin group sites, and a lot of those are lost to time. Though some guest art were featured in figure magazines and DVD booklets.

It's a shame what there was is lost, and now they're all pretty overlooked, Micron Trilogy has some real good girls, wish there was more fanart of them.

Neat, thanks for the rundown anon. Yeah, I barely know anything about the TF fandom during that time honestly; I'm only recently getting around to watching/reading all the shows and comics, but as for what the fans were like or thought, is mostly an enigma to me (outside I guess TFWiki, which is HEAVILY biased to hell).

Amusingly, the movies seem pretty popular with Fujos and yumes. Most of the humanformer art I see of them are majority male, unlike other series which have a more balanced ratio.

I looked up Broadside for the first time since he was just a G1 Triple Changer, and the years have not been good to him. That TR mold is god awful, like wtf is that jet mode?

Well they were shit robots that "combined" into not great weapons most of the time.
Unlike the Beast Battle Masters, who are usually an animal designed around their weapon mode or the Target Masters who just sort of bend over, and even then most recent Target Masters got screwed over articulation wise.

Well that's the issue; The Micros have to be decent toys on their own to sell well.
So you probably need to sacrifice a mode to have either a Tiny Vehicle that turns into a Big Weapon, a Tiny Figure that turns into a Big Weapon, or a Tiny Vehicle that turns into a Tiny Figure.

Worst part is there's genuine room for improvement with the original figure. Original TFA Prowl still holds up to modern scrutiny (and has superior engineering that the Legacy guy even, who was just copying the exact thing the og was doing), but Bumblebee could have definitely been improved upon.
Like, looking at the Hydrodive Bumblebee is just one example, but also generally-speaking the feet are kinda silly-looking here and don't quite match the cartoon look neither, the shoulder articulation is a bit precarious and the ballsocket's prone to shattering, and those back panels on the back of his legs NEVER wanna stay on their balljoints while transforming, lmao.

Yeah, for a generation 1 esque Bumblebee, minus the mismatched head and wonky ass shoulders.

As an Animated Bee, he's fucking terrible. Genuinely such a terrible choice on the designers, who could've done more to make him match the Animated aesthetic much better.

The whole G1-ification has been a plague on almost every late 2008s-early 2010s character design. They can do Unicron Trilogy right, but not things like Animated or Prine? Come the fuck on.

I wasn't super stoked on this guy but I bought him while out seeing family today. Hes way cooler in hand. I don't read onstructions and thought I was missing spmething for jet mode until I realized the wing flaps on the bottom were for robot mode. His modes aren't the cleanest bit his Tank mode is better than I expected. My one gripe, barely even a complaint, is the hulk hands... anybody know what the hell the those are about? Did he have giant gunhands in some episode I missed?

i still say clear weapons are fucking cool, but anything intended to be a gun should have the mechanical and barrel parts should be painted in a proper color, with the glowy parts only being energy-channels or something. maybe a glowy energon ammo pack, that kinda thing.
just as sure as any energon-blade weapon should have its handle painted in some color, so that we're not trying to believe the same material you hit enemies with is what you hold onto.

I think the only real explanation is that he had a ton more moving parts than most guys, due to being a triple changer, so they added just a lil more plastic so they could justify it as a 'leader class'

As a huge tankfag I do appreciste the extra firepower and the gun being able to elevate. The missile pods that the hulk hands become arent as odd as it might seem to the uninitiated, several tank designs have been built using similar rocket systems even as far back as WW2.

I do wish that there was a better place to store the sword than on the side, but for now I'll just call it add-on armor.

You want the real reason? The gimmick of the legacy line was supposed to be combining energon weapons, a gimmick they gave up on halfway through the line.
The weapons were designed beforehand and were given out to whatever character they saw fit. Sometimes it kind of worked, like the axe blades replacing Arcee's arm blades or the large swords becoming Kickback's abdomen, and sometimes it was kind of random like Blitzwing's gauntlet. Hell, if you look at the concept art, the hands and missile pods were meant to be separate weapons.
And if you think Bliztwing was weird, you should see the core class from the same period. Skywarp didn't even get null rays because of his energon weapon part.

but then again, Dragon Caesar had articulating fingers that also had hollow tips and missiles would come out... but I feel like the more 'super robot' something is, the more acceptable that is. Personally the furthest I'd wanna see is like, the fingertips have lightning generators or somesuch. something you could see sharing space with the actual finger mechanisms.

Very happy with him. Lots of fun poses he can do. Consodering the last time I really had any Transformers was the Armada era, I'm feeling spoiled for poseability with every modern Transformer I buy. Sure I was around for the Beast Wars era but more often than not those toys were a pain in the ass to handle at all, much less pose and get standing on their own.

The problem is each bit has to be a decent weapon/prop on it's own, and you can only have so many combinations of tubes and blades...
Personally I'd rather generic stuff like Rifle Swords, but that doesn't have the "Wow Shiny New Hat!" factor.

Too overdesigned, the unreleased figure was simple but striking. Also dislike the spray paint style logo instead of the industrial, Perfect Dark-looking logo on the prototype. I'd hope it's just an option label since they sometimes give you multiple options but I doubt it since it's such a big label, they usually save those for small labels like license plates and faction symbols.

Honestly his alt modes are growing on me more and more. The Tank mode is obviously the best of the alt modes, but the plane mode is SO close to being good. If somehow they could have Turret unfold into the undercarriage and have the rear-tread parts smooth out a little better it would be really good. As for his articulation, more would be nice but with what he has you can really do a lot. If I had to ask for one thing it would be an upper toe foot bend, but its not even necessary.

So final conclusion on Blitzwing: I love him when I expected only to like him. The downsides are a chunky jet mode (but thats ok) and maybe it was just me but some of his pegs and slots were so tight that I was certain I was going to break them the first time I transformed him, even though I knew what those spots were for.

Well again that's one of the biggest hurdles when developing this kind of modular accessory system; Every bit has to look like a weapon, or at the very least a useful prop, and they all have to plug together in ways that make some sense.

I think the biggest problem here is that plenty of things became way more accessible and the wider public's lack of understanding morphed into this "kind idiocy" of sorts. No clue - I think Empik switched to serving as a middleman for Dystryktzero in their online store or something? They have a bunch of Selects stuff and overpriced Nemesis and Soundblaster Core figs, but nothing in the 3 locations that they have in my city. I've mostly switched to Panzabawka/Kimland with the occasional Smyk purchase (although Half Price and TK Maxx are 100% worth checking out on a regular basis, I got lots of great figs there this year alone - deluxes for 59 PLN are a rare sight but a welcome one).

They have, though. Prime stuff has been redesigned. But things like Armada and Beast Wars are technically congruent with G1, i.e., their designs are already intended to co-habitate. G1 Optimus Prime and Lio Convoy are only separated by a single degree, both of them having appeared on-screen with Optimus Primal.

I know you guys are just joking around, but some of you really don't understand the difference between stylization and actual physical design elements, do you? A hypothetical Legacy Bayverse Sideswipe wouldn't have a hood for a chest because Bayverse Sideswipe doesn't have a hood for a chest.

The animated/prime characters we've gotten in legacy have all had their stylization changed while maintaining their unique physical design elements. They've been pretty consistent with the process.

The new feet on him have faux car-front details, but the Generations-styling made the feet so thin that you don't even notice, which's probably a problem all its own.
In theory I wouldnt be opposed to faux car feet for a new Animated Bee, since his show model has the big sneaker/boot details that would be hard to replicate naturally in transformation, but yeah... I wouldn't do it like this...

As someone who also grew up in the 07-09 era of TF, I can relate but with how I'm only now getting UT toys via the modern lines lol. Ain't complaining though, these figures are mostly fantastic so far.
But yeah, for me like, MOST Animated figures already aged perfectly. Some like Bee could be tweaked pretty extensively (and were, see Hydrodive Bee, who could still be further improved), and others really need BIGGER toys, but for the most part I just want a couple tweaks on the original molds and thats it lol: giving more of them ankle tilts, removing the electronic gimmicks from the leaders cuz i hated that shit even as a kid sorry lol, giving proper elbows to figures like Starscream who have that gorilla arm poseability, etc. I imagine going into TFPrime, most of those figures aged even better, but I wouldnt know; I was never a TFP guy.

Transforming him from jet to robot is a pain in the ass. Under his nosecone, there’s a little landing gear wheel. And you need to fold that nosecone underneath itself and sort of under/inside his chest in order to get him properly transformed. The issue is that said landing gear likes to get in the way of things, making it so that you can’t fully fold the nosecone in. There is a fix for it that you don’t even need to do any mods for, but it’s still really annoying, especially since this is the second time I’ve had to deal with this. It also means I will never transform him, which is not good for a Transformer.

Oh maaaaan this takes me back to days of free time spent looking at JP toy blogs. The photoshopped pics made to look like catalog graphics or anime stock footage (pic related I put together wanting to recapture that style, never got around to doing more though but I'd like to), the clunky and sometimes eye searing web design, collages and photos of every individual toy and collections from before and after the early 2000s... it's not like it's changed much, because we still do all that, but it's definitely lost something moving from individual personalized websites to centralized social media. Though there are a good amount of users on the JP side that still use twitter well for this. Aaaaaahhhh I miss it...

He was planned to have a totally different transformation scheme, but they changed their mind on it halfway; as a result, there's leftover bits and bobs from the aborted configuration (namely, the landing gear preventing the nosecone from folding up) that interfere with the new transformation, creating clearance issues.
People have found that cutting his landing gear lets the nosecone fold in as intended, but I find leaving the whole nose untransformed and letting it hang works okay - he just ends up with a gap visible from the sides.

You really don't have to do that! The transformation does work as intended, but it is confusing. There's a notch for the landing gear wheel to pass through, you just need to keep the hinge of the backpack compressed in and fold the nosecone while keeping the landing gear pressed flat. It takes force, but it will clear.

Not sure what you're doing to get that kind of clearance, but mine certainly doesn't bend that way, no matter how hard I've tried. maybe you got lucky and got one with a running change? Don't get me wrong - I'm not one of those people who was cutting off the landing gear (and I have no plans to do so), but I'm definitely at a point where it's just easier to leave the nosecone completely untransformed and hanging; he ends up a bit floppy, but at least you can bring his shoulders to where they're supposed to be.

Well if you're fine with that workaround, but it's worth giving another shot. See, I thought mine was as well at first because no matter how hard I pushed it just wouldn't go, but it's a case where every part needs to be in alignment in order for the parts to clear. There's a very small notch in the cockpit where the landing gear passes through that only works when the hinge is compressed like in my pics, and you push the nosecone down to force the landing gear passed that notch and into place. Unless the notch is a running change that wasn't there on earlier copies, it should work when done this way.

Takara Brave series combiner. If you're not familiar it's basically a successor to Victory's toyline model, but as its own super robot thing that lasted between end of JG1 and Beast Wars. Also just used some repaints of TF molds as individual characters now and then, like Six-Shot. Lots of combiners, and a heck of a lot of ambition to them for their time.

LG Magnus has been on my desk since I got him. He's kinda slowly becoming one of my favorite bots, which I did not expect. He's got a bunch of obvious flaws, but none of them outweigh how fun of a toy it is. I particularly love how much of the truck cab still has a footprint in bot mode instead of completely hiding away, like the wheels on the side, the headlights on his hips, and the smokestacks up by his collar. It makes him look like a truck that literally stood up and put on armor which is basically what Ultra Magnus should be.

This toy has also made me appreciate how cool Magnus' design is, and why the '86 writers gave him the personality he has; because there's no way a dude who looks this tall, tough, and terrific is not the main character, unless he doesn't want to be. I had the MP mold which was a super fun toy, but as a robot he just kinda looked a bit fat and dumpy compared to this.

Jet guys were fun enough to convince me to get more micromasters, Laserbeak and Ravage are passably ok, a bit more fun if you have core or any other Soundwave obviously, overpaid for the truck guys bc those were the only two-pack G1 micros I was missing and Powertrain's pretty leader-like. Highjump's ok, has wheel saw hands.

Well there's always the Perfect Effect figure/add-on. Even before I had Magnus, I always wanted to pick it up just because it looks like a neat deluxe-ish Optimus. I'm pretty sure they did a red one for Powermaster Prime. They're kind of hard to get now, though.

I think I'll wait to see if any third party attempts a replacement robot cab for the SS Commander, really the only thing keeping me on the fence outside of the shoulders, but I can overlook that if it had a smaller robot and power-up function. Although I guess in the meantime could just pretend the separate cab is its own thing combining with the trailer.

Ended up getting accesories for Gamer Megatron and I'm not really sure who to give them to. I gave the cannon to Armada Megatron but the barrel ends up too big, while the peg is too thick foe most figures, while the mace is pretty limited due to the way they designed the peg.

Got Legacy-Evo Bombshell today from BBTS.

As far as the Legacy Insecticons go, he's the least-good of the three. Not awful, but not as good as the other two. I really dislike the fact his weapon can't be stored away in an "inconspicuous" place like the other two can.

I really like those comic-inspired ones though. Can you remove the crest from these as a separate part to fit onto the original head? Because the purple crest on my Selects Galvatron is the only thing annoying me lol, and I'm worried about paint chipping because of my above point, if I decided to paint it.
Besides the curvier crest, what's the major difference between this movie head and the original mold? I'm more of a casual so I'm just curious what the difference was for you.

Even worse is that they didn't do cartoon or toy colors and went for a mix of both. Ignoring unpainted plastic and color distribution on molds, the head should be black since they went for toy colors for the chest. It's going to be weird when they do a cartoon colors version and the only difference is the chest color.

Eh, no not really. Bombshell really got the short end of the stick when it comes to these figures and alt modes. I don't understand why they even bothered installing swivels into his shoulders for the frontmost bug arms when there's not a damn thing you can do wtih them.

His face shield doesn't really peg in without a struggle either, since it's painted and has fitting issues.
