I don't quite get why manufacturers spend so much money on paint for movie figures but skimp on paint for the figures people actually want to buy. This seems rather common across all domestics.

Does the licensor really demand a certain level of paint on the figures or something? I mean it isn't like they demand a certain level of quality.

You call this spending money on paint? It looks like they have a wash to emulate wear but thats like the cheapest paint you can slap onto a figure, it barely even qualifies as paint with how low effort it is and they otherwise look like almost entirely bare plastic.

Its dry brushing. Dry brushes are on the surface and high parts of the sculpt, washes get into the crevices of the sculpt.

Either way, each time the brush touches the figure it's like X amount of money and those apps probably have quite a few instances of the brushes touching the figure.

It was a thing trading card companies used to do. I wanna say in the late 90s early 2000s? It was just another gimmick to create artificial scarcity.
They mostly used tv show costumes.

I guess Todd thinks he can bring it back. Still stupid though

That's weird to me. I know sets often get destroyed after filming, but surviving movie props and costumes are collectable because they are seen on screen. But a swatch of random cloth with a card that says it was a part of a costume that could literally be a sample from a craft shop has no appeal.

Maybe the costume had to be trashed and they're just using pieces of it. Maybe they destroyed the suits so they couldn't be reused in another film. Reminds me of Prometheus, they destroyed many of the suits so nobody else would use the costumes in another production and steal the design.

Not LITERALLY each time the brush touches the figure, dummy. If one swipe of the brush across the surface of the figure hits it 5 times, they aren't getting charged five times. Each 'process', so each application, costs money. At the end of the day, it's just labor that costs money, but the more paint processes = more labor.

Dry brushing and washes are more costly than other processes such as tampo prints, and sprays with masks, though. Since these have to be done by hand and take a few seconds longer than a quick stamp or a quick spray of an airbrush after the mask is clipped on.

Many costumes and props get destroyed because the studios/producers don't want to have to pay for storage or keep track of them. That's why they love it when Prop Store comes along to buy shit for their auctions

Not a chance a figure with a zillion spots would be hand painted with a brush. They likely meant hand painted as in paint airbrushed over many masks over various parts of the figure, but no way they'd use a brush to paint each individual spot.

The line already bombed (but it apparently itdidn't) and the safest toys to make are always named characters played by famous actors.

So it's understandable why they're not making generic nobodies in extremely generic scifi costumes.
Completely nondescript compared to the badassness that were the previous designs.

This new movie is very disappointing in so many ways. IT's not bad, but it's a fucking waste of a great series.
