Just got in one of my childhood faves, Transmetal 2 Iguanus

Hes just as sick and vibrant and fun as I remember, although a lot harder to balance than i realized as a kid, but at that age its all about bashing them together and making fighting noises not posing

The person i bought this from or whoever they got it from took amazing care of it, the paintwork looks amazing, no chrome flake, and all the damn skirt bits are in one piece. My childhood one had every single of of them break off into bits, so now im being extra delicate.

Pictured with the reissue Iguanus and our Jurassic Park girly Dilophocon. I never had the basics Iguanus as a kid, just the TM2, so its fun to see now the evolution of the character, really interesting too as hes one of the only non show characters who got direct upgrades

TM2 Iguanus has such an amazingly simple but genius transformation, the way its legs both open up and the way the head flips around to become the skirt, while the tail reveals the robot head, the little details of swinging open his sides to accommodate the motion, all perfect stuff. I think a modern comparison of simplicity matched with brilliance would be the TR Triggerhappy figure.

Im extremely cautious about doing it too much though, he feels sturdy but i dont trust the skirt pieces.

Also comparing the two Iguanus with Dilophocon you can really feel the design dna, even if a modern retool of him never happens she still makes a great companion piece akin to Tarantulas and Blackarachnia

The detailing blows me away, both in the depth of the sculpt and the detail of the paint finish. Its such a perfect reassurance that, no, you arent just wearing nostalgia goggles, beast wars truly did absolutely kill it with these toys.

From a modern eye you can see that they over relied on ball joints which can loosen over time when perhaps hinges and swivels would be sturdier, and theres some articulation that weve recently begun to take for granted like wrists and waist swivels and ankle tilts. But even with those things in consideration, the sculpt, paint and plastic quality are really on another level

Always thought that was interesting - both he and Scarem/Insecticon were Basics that never showed up in the show yet managed to get TM2 upgrades for some weird reason. And that reminds me - I keep meaning to track down Insecticon and his Scarem upgrade at some point.

He was Prime before Optimus was, depending on continuity he's usually killed off by Megatron before the matrix passes to Orion Pax, making him Optimus Prime. Before Sentinal there was Nova Prime, and again depending on continuity a handful of others. They all seem to turn into some kind of truck, obviously to echo Optimus' design but I like to think the matrix just really likes turning guys into trucks.

Depending on the continuity he is either a radical enforcer of a police state or a good but angry conservative leader that opposes the Decepticons before everybody else does but society isn't listening to him and believing they could solve it peacefully till it's too late.

Yeah honestly I would have found it more satisfying had he actually thrown a bomb or something. But he didn't have the political power to act on his own, so he accepted the rules. If anything his only fault was that he listened to Orion Pax for too long in my opinion. Orion was too attached to his former best friend and not a neutral voice in that conflict and by the time he finally got ready to fight thousands were already killed.

This is technically right, but only as long as the status quo is stable. During a crisis it won't stop anything. If people come to coup your government or start terrorist attacks you have to get rid of the responsible groups first and foremost. Niceness and optimism was what the Weimar Republic believed in and we know how that ended just a few years later. Worse, the enemies knew the government would try to be friends with them and banked on it. Believe me, I am from this shitty country.

I honestly think that the framing in IDW2 was weird though. We were meant to side with Orion and hate Sentinel but just a year later the comic revealed that Megatron was evil all along and Orion wrong for trusting him. Or maybe the writer was just afraid of fan backlash, since it already happened before and I wouldn't blame him and the artist if they abstained from working on TF because of that. I enjoyed most of MtmtE, but the "Decepticon = good" meme it started is one of the most annoying fandom ideas the franchise was ever plagued by. Or maybe it started with TFP, not sure.

That said, most of my favorite bots are unrepentant evil Decepticons. But this is another thing.

Bit unrelated to your discussion, but totally relatable - I tend to like the crazier and more unrepentant dudes as well, which is why BW Megatron is probably my absolute favorite character in the whole franchise. No ambiguity, no attempt to frame him as being in the right at any point, dude's just plain evil (and a shameless ham) and loving it.

Not even saying that specific comic is good, especially not the latter half, but I dig the dystopian Cybertronian arc and the space opera aspect. We just never get that otherwise. I always liked the actual space parts and bot lore more than the rest of the franchise since Marvel UK.

Also, I agree with >>10645245 and >>10647017. Fuckers like that or even Tarn, Straxus, Thunderwing and the likes are fucking cool. I can sometimes enjoy antagonists with the right idea, but nowadays almost every alleged villain is like and probably even has a sad backstory on top of it. Transformers is a franchise that still contains a good bunch of genuinely evil dudes that just want to conquer because conquering is fun or that backstab the right guys for the wrong reasons. Not related but this was the main reason for why I wasn't interested in the new cartoon. There was no bot villain anymore AFAIK.

That's what I wanted to say. It would work. And hell the line already announced more surprising reveals than that. I once told people that if anything Tarn would be the only IDW OC that would ever get a toy, thanks to his design. Well I was wrong, but that Shockwave version was literally the last thing I saw coming, so who knows what else is possible.
Macabre and Ferak in particular are eyecatchers if you ask me and I will always be in for Marvel comic OCs. Luckily IDW reintroduced a good bunch of them, so maybe Hasbro remembers them. Hope that Image will do the same at some point down the line.

Speaking of it, I wish this franchise would get some novels again. Yeah I know that Dreamwave's books weren't really good and maybe I am the only one here that bothered reading the ones I could get hold of, but it was a start. Novels allow the biggest creative freedom so they could be used to elaborate on places, lore or characters the main series have no time to focus on.

I think Ruckley just completely lost the plot with IDW2, he was juggling a dozen different plots at once and the story moved at a snail's pace. I'm guessing the editors told him to hurry the fuck up and get to the war in the hopes of salvaging the comic.
And in the end, almost nothing was resolved. Bumblebee's past, the dead Voin, the Rise, all of it stopped mattering by issue 25 or so.

I also think that Dreamwave aka early IDW1 Sentinel is criminally underrated. He doesn't like to talk, he just acts. I was such a fun seeing him rolling over his enemies, using his blaster and then even upgrading. Twice even, if you count that hardening mode or whatever it was that turned him black. I would pay to know what DW was planning for him if Megatron Origin didn't end prematurely and the DW universe with it.

Nearly fimished with Cyberverse. Its weak in a lot of places but I have enjoyed the new characters, changes to old characters, and that it didn't try to just be a full retread of G1 or movieverse stuff.

Speaking of Movieverse, they said Legacy United is trying to sort of bring in characters from every Transformers piece of media. Who do you think they'll pick from the Movies? A Barricade retool of Chase is an easy bet, but I'd love a Bonecrusher or Blackout.

I think Cyberverse is the dark horse of the TF cartoons. It's not perfect by any means and has a ton of flaws, but it also did a lot of things right or better than so many other series of that franchise and it was somehow almost completely over-looked to the point at which even its fans only got into it by the time was already ending/cancelled.
Ironically I expected it to be the big hit among more casual TF fans and newer fans but it seems to be the opposite and rather be enjoyed by 4channers and the likes.

I enjoy it a lot too. At first he was too aggressively orange in my opinion and I was disappointed that they went for an Astrotrain remold instead of giving him something that looked more like his earlier comic body, but bit later I started to dig it. By now the color is an iconic part of him and I think that the wings and the prime-type helmet in particular look very good with that.

I felt the exact same way about TR Sentinel back in the day. The only reason I even bought him was because he was wave 1 and I was stupid with my money and bought everything back then. Now he's the only non-OG Headmaster from TR that I display.
Good as some of those toys were, I'm at the point where I would very much like to get guys like Triggerhappy, Quake or Getaway with the correct gimmicks.

and I guess that's the shoulder joint I'm seeing at the gill area, but that's still kind of confusing. narrow it or collapse it slightly for a sleeker profile and you'd be all set.

No fucking idea who came up with this but the series is way more tolerable as a dub with subtitles. That said I also had massive issues with Optimus, Karen-Elita and basically everything involving Bee but that's a whole own type of problem. As an Impactor fan I am also disappointed that they were incapable of using him wisely and just killed him off before he even did anything meaningful.

It's also weird as fuck writing. Like legit bizarre. They introduce things that sound like plot points, new villains or arcs and never mention them again or do some nonsensical shit with them. They also throw in tons of references from earlier shows but again don't do anything with it or explain them, characters say one thing and do the opposite right after wards besides other unreasonable shit. It's generally a series without context and I was never sure whether I fell asleep and missed something or whether there was another logic skip again. Also they couldn't even bother to edit OP's and Megs models a bit so they have the same scratches and wounds during a flashback from 4 mio. years ago.

Spark Crystals in TM2 and Neo were the best thing ever. Iguanus had a really good spot for his, right on his chest. I wish I liked some of the TM2 figures better, but most of them were kind of eh to me. The basic guys were really solid though.

I would totally be in for this version. Think Milne designed him when he was still drawing for Dreamwave. His pre-war look in IDW is slightly different but pretty similar. I like that he was loosely based on a samurai but ten times more tanky. I once found a fan printing a self-made version that looked cool. Not sure if he ever finished it though.

I'm curious how Legacy Sandstorm and Studio Series Springer will look next to each other. Different toylines but surely they're going to share some engineering right?
I didn't really like the Siege Springer mold so I'm looking forward to the new one, but I'd rather get a new version of the IDW Thrilling 30 design. It's also a shame that it probably won't have a Wreckers insignia due to being Studio Series.
Hoping Sandstorm and Tidal Wave get tied into the Star Seekers thing they're going for with Legacy.

If they're both based off of their g1 designs, which I think is likely since sandstorm has yet to get a modern take, then I feel like they most likely won't. Sandstorm's two modes are far more different from eachother than springer's, I don't think they could really like liberties like with the t30s design.

He's a nice toy - I posted my 'TeraShaver' version of him a while back, who has a slightly different color scheme (grey plastic instead of beige). I honestly can't think of any real way to improve the original other than to maybe add a little more articulation to the wings and some ankle rockers (the latter of which may not be possible due to his transformation scheme).

I like the idea of Ferak being a pirate, he looks like a space pirate. Squadron X is also an intriguing concept but he doesn't look like a heavy-hitter that would survive for long so I always imagined that he joined somewhat recently (recently for Cybertronians at least). Getting toys of SX would be cool, I mean even the djd got at least some recognition by third parties and besides maybe two of them the characters are no-names as well. Ferak, Earthquake and Macabre would be the most interesting ones and they shouldn't be hard to make as retools.

The average age here is like 55 or something and the kids that exist are into video games since the 90s, so I wouldn't wonder if the only people that bought TF toys here were adults, funny enough. Strongarm and Trashmaster just showed up. Won't get a chance to open them until after work, but my initial impressions are that Strongarm looks good in-hand and wears the Minerva mold better than I thought she would (though her chest is somehow flatter looking than both Minerva or Elita), while Trashmaster has a surprising amount of weight to him - almost as much as Siege Ultra Magnus fully armored-up. Definitely a very solid dude, though we'll see how solid he is when I get back in a few hours.

I think ironhide looks kinda cool like this, though
Less like he's dying horrifically and more like he's heavily damaged from fending off a crowd of cons, yelling and taunting them and fighting 'till his spark gives out.

Poor prowl, though. Dude just looks like he's getting helplessly bullied. Definitely built for getting harassed and/or killed by cons.
Call me cruel but I also wish they used ironhide's yellow for his eyes.

An utterly bizarre dual pack, but I kinda dig it. My condolences to those who missed out on regular ER prowl and are still pining for him, hope 86 will eventually deliver

There are a shitton of good ideas that can be taken from G1 but G1 itself was also a simple kids cartoon so it would be cool to see a more grown up version of some of the lore and plot points.

Ironhide's alt mode really looks so so SO much better in solid red with that yellow stripe (mostly solid anyway, the feet and shoulder transformation hinges are a different plastic, but it's only noticeable if you look really close), it almost makes me forget his windshield is demolished. Would've taken something like this over clear plastic any day.
I didn't expect to like this mold as much as I do honestly, but I'm enjoying it a lot. He's just nice and hefty and fun to pose and transform despite all the panels

Prowl is just prowl with a silver nipple and more toon accurate deco. Still doesn't perfectly line up unfortunately (though it's pretty close, compared to what I've seen), but at least it isn't brittle clear plastic and he's got painted rims!
I'm not the biggest prowl fan I'll admit, so this doesn't do much for me, but for half off I can't complain too much. Definitely reserved for being bullied by cons.

honestly I don't think Gundam has ever done a good show except G Gundam, and obviously it can't all be G Gundam all the time.
Original was depressing, Wing is angsty and effeminate, and every other version i've tried to watch was duller than a shallow dish of dirt (and these days, the designs aren't that good)

Fucking this. So many of my favorite figures of all time don't have ankle tilts. It's amazing when it's done right, but so many other times I feel like the extra parts could have been better spent.

What are you talking about? G1 Transformers is literally the epitome of a series created to sell toys. The reason the cast was so huge - and why there were so many literal who's who got one episode or scene of screentime before never being seen again - is because they were advertisements. That's also why there were so many 'non sequitur' episodes that served as filler - plot came second to the need to sell toys to kids.

I think SS86 Magnus looks kinda cool, but this truck mode is a total afterthought and is completely inexcusable to me. Aside from looking like a flimsy box of plastic panels with a ton of missing paint apps, the rear wheels are off-kilter in almost every pic I've seen.

Here's hoping some 3P steps up and does a transforming cab replacement in the style of perfect effect.

Personally I prefer when the plot/setting are serious, but the actual focus of the show is more laidback
I bring it up a lot, but the first Zoids anime was perfect. There's a nasty war going on, there's hitlery dudes building WMDs, there's soldiers looting villages.. but the main plot is about a boy and his dog(osaur) helping a mysterious naked amnesiac girl cross the war-torn countryside with the help of their trucker-mama friend and Han Solo. You don't have to dwell on the grimness long, there's time to laugh, there's time to cry.
I also forgot to mention re: gundam earlier, I fucking loved 08th MS Team for the same reason. It's a small platoon, off on the sidelines. That makes for better stories.

It's particularly lame because the whole "leader size at a commander price point" would be totally perfect for a Magnus with a proper transforming cab, but instead they wasted the extra budget on stupid gimmicks. Which still resulted in the cab looking like shit.

Kids love dark stuff even more than adults. And mixing dark parts with light-hearted things doesn't mean it's depressing. Plague Dogs is depression (albeit still awesome), TF was never depressing but you can show multiple sides of an ongoing issue and have different characters dealing with it in different ways otherwise you don't need multiple characters for the same roles to begin with.

For a decade or more I had the opposite problem, good guys outnumbering (and outclassing) the bad guys. These days I'm more likely to add to my Decepticon army than the Autobot one, I like my bad guys outnumbering my good guys so the outcome isn't assured. Plus I just like random 'cons from the late era of G1, the colorschemes and designs are distinct from the early era guys.

Or retro-futurists, so we get more cars in the style of Blurr, Hotrod, Kup and Arcee. I was always fascinated by them as a kid, imagining what cars would be like in the far off future world of 2005. Shit, a whole line of bots in that style would be sick, they don't even have to be known dudes just make randos like in PCC. Maybe a couple would stand out and become more recognized outside the toy line, like Smolder did.

Agree. There should be some tank and jet decepticons defecting during the early days of war sometimes. Or depending on the continuity just with the Autobots from the start, though that would be mainly OCs then I guess. Tanks are my favorites because I generally like the big heavies, but jets can be so varied and fun, it doesn't have to be seekers. Bomber Megatron is probably one of my favorite designs even. I miss Figueroa.

I don't think there is a single story with that guy in which he didn't successfully piss me off.
In a sense he is probably a good antagonist because of that, assuming that I am supposed to seethe instead of wanting more of them which is the case whenever I get some Thunderwing or Constructicon content or something.

Surprise favourite of the lot is Beast Machines Longhorn
His play features include pressing on that orange bit to raise his head up for bull goring action and the nose ring is actually loose and dangly

Earthspark Bumblebee is a bit of a treat too. The camera makes the colour separation between paint and plastic super obvious but it isn't nearly as bad in hand.
Just a cool little guy with a slightly different transformation and very tidy backpack

This is the whole reason I hate accuracy. Nobody demands anything better beyond abysmal 40 year old scribbles that weren't even meant to be seen for more than a single frame. It could still be screen-accurate and not look like a stack of shitty unpainted panels that's barely held together.

Bandai still owns the Machine Robo designs while Hasbro owns the Gobots characters, so if they did new figures you'll have liberal updates that pass the squint test like V500 Crasher. At best I could see something like what the revised Japanese prints of Megatron Origins did to Cy-Kill, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Recieved my Bludgeon from pulse yesterday

I gotta say, i was a bit iffy but I liked his vibe enough to go in on him anyway, and I'm really glad I did. What a fun fucking toy.

Positives: ankles tilt forward thank fuck, they always forget that. Transformation joint gives knees double bend. Great hip range. I love the bits of orange transparent plastic sprinkled throughout, they really pop. Head looks great and the transformation hinge gives him a good upward looking range. The inward transformation hinge on the biceps allows nice rounded arm postures rather than a stiff straight down. Can hold sword in both hands. Sculpting on sword is really cool. Solid feeling plastic. Really well balanced and streamlined physique overall. Hes just fun to pose around, a lot like jhiaxus he just naturally leans into action figure over being an awkward kibble mess.

Negatives: ankle tilt is a little limited, its great to have such deep front and back but side to side is very slight. Would have been cool to have the knee spike on a hinge to cover the knee area when posing. Would have loved an ab crunch, its one of the few joints hes missing. Shoulders look silly once you go past about 45 outward. The lack of a double jointed elbow sucks. The one joint that hurts more that anything is lack of wrist tilt, the swivel is nice and i love the open palm claws, but for a swordsman you really need that downward wrist tilt. Would have been cool to see a remolded chest but im fine. The chest loves to pop off though so on a clear plastic part that concerns me. The tank turret never looks good. I love the clear plastic barrels but the base piece kinda flops around no matter where you put it and it sticks out too much both on the back and the arms.

Unfortunately all the positives of the robot mode as a fun poseable action figure seem to come at the cost of the alt mode. The knees and turret sit so far back, and the treads stop way too early which leaves him looking unfinished from behind. Hands hanging off, knees and thighs totally visible. The turret sucks in this mode too, just awkwardly pegs onto the back and barely has upward tilt range. Ive seen hate on the chest as a tank grill but i think it looks pretty cool.

Ive been thinking what id want from like a dna designs upgrade kit, and i think the two biggest improvements would be

1. A new tank turret piece that doesnt sit around awkward flopping side to side than you can plug the orange barrels onto but also has a main turret that the sword sheaths into like the rotf.

And 2. Just replace from the forearm down. The forearm is attached by mushroom peg that easily pops off, so you could just pop n swap. Give a new forearm that has a double jointed elbow, wrist tilt, and somehow wraps around the back to box off the back end of the tank.

Im sure that the best well get is a replacement chest piece and some kibbly turrets or armour, but i feel like those two changes could really take this thing over.

As it stands though, the complaints ive made have been me stretching to cover everything, the base figure is just so cool and fun as fuck. Im really glad i took the chance on him.

I got Bludgeon on Friday and I'm in the same boat liking him a lot more than I expected. Not sure if you have Tarn but Bludgeon shares pretty much all of the same strengths and weaknesses, though I'm surprised how much different personality the two figures have despite being almost entirely recolors of each other. What I like to do is fold the smaller back guns downwards and keep the turret on his back to break up the Tarn silhouette just a bit more.

It's a shame his shoulders are put together with flathead pins, otherwise it would be nice to get an upgrade kit that better matched his comic design here >>10649369. Mavs put together a 3D printed kit for him, but I am curious if anyone else is going to take a swing at it. I agree about the arms or wrists but I really do think the more accurate chest alone would go a long way to helping set him apart.

I passed on tarn because i felt the MMC figure already did a solid job and i believe at that point we knew about the bludgeon leak so i was more interested in that, thats why i think the chest doesnt bother me much, im not staring at the exact same figure in purple beside him.

That kit looks cool but i have zero skill in painting so it would only make him worse, wasnt that the kit that the person was posting wips of here too? If its the same one im thinking of my fave part was the way they incorporated the tiny figure as a pretender inside the armour, that was inspired.

For what it's worth they did a good job at breaking up the colors differently between the two, so the chest is only really a mild nuisance than something that genuinely ruins the figure for me.

Absolutely no loosenes on mine so far, the opposite actually, when i was first messing with him i didnt think he had forward ankles cuz it was so stiff and the same thing for his knee bend and the shoulder rotation. I kept thinking "surely the shoulders must pull out farther, theres no way im supposed to just force this to rotate" but nah. All the joints have smoothed out after a few transformations and posing, but none feel weak

So, looks like there's an upgrade kit out for Armada OP. As I've never actually seen Armada, I'm curious about that big gun in there - is that something he actually had on the show, or is it something these guys completely fabricated to help justify the price point?

Yeah, the only things here that caught my eye are the skirt, the moveable hands, and the truck doors (which were a personal peeve of mine). Don't see the point in the new chestpiece at all, and I can live without the covers for the feet and shins.

May be hard to find. I recall some distro issue with the Season 3 ones that have 5mm handles. The season 1 and 2 bakugans and flying pucks shelfwarmed hard so retailers dropped the minicon range by then.

Literally just got a lot of these about a month ago - Tricerashot, Lord Doomitron, Dragonus (original version), Slipstream, and Bashbreaker. Of the group, I'd say Tricerashot and Dragonus are my favorites, while bashbreaker's transformation is a bit unimpressive (however, his colors make him the perfect war hammer for my Toxitron G2 Grimlock, who's his new permanent buddy).

I've heard some good things about Rescue Bots, like it's surprisingly well written for a show for literal toddlers, fun character dynamics and all that. Unsure if the same goes for the sequel series or not, I might give it a try.. But man, what I wouldn't give for a series that doesn't care about being wholesome or appealing to [DEMOGRAPHIC] and is more concerned about just being fucking sick. Give me my show where everyone's got a super mode or combines with their dedicated power mushroom buddy, and the main villain is called something retarded like OMEGASATANTRON, and he's just a real evil bastard. Not misunderstood or downtrodden or anything. Even if it were stupid as shit I'd take it any day over the like, family drama or whatever ES seemed like it was from what I saw

I'm gonna replace his backpiece with a more skull like shape, swap his hands, and turn his head and waist around in bot mode to give him a more unique look, hopefully being able to mount the new chest piece vertical in tank mode so it's more like rid/cyberverse/comics bludgeon

Having so much fun playing with him. I know the shoulders are an extremely Tarn specific look but i do like them on Bludgeon, gives him the look of a dude who would just shoulder slam into you while plunging his blade in your chest

Also its wild how hit and miss hastak is with clear plastic, sometimes its dead and then figures like this it catches the light and glows so well, its a shame he has no light piping but the paint works well

We had a Gobots comic that was entirely 100% faithful to the Machine Robo designs (moreso than to the cartoon), and then there's that whole GotG Holiday Special scene with a guy in a very on-model Cy-Kill costume too. Evidently, something's changed/become evident with regards to Hasbro's rights with the series. Can't say for certain about Takara though.
