ehhh... then could have just, made the windshield a bit smaller?? or not engineered it in a way to require the thing to split into three like that. It just feels like unnecessary partscount that just makes him look slightly worse, there was definitely a few better ways they could have done it. stuff like that is the reason ER is my least favorite post-prime wars line.
Slicer's colors make the mold look a lot better tho, if I were to get any version of the mold it'd probably be him.

I'd make the inner bot a Core Class type of deal, put mostnof the focus on the middle bot, then have the outer shell serve as a Weaponizer or transform into a "base" or whatever.

You know what I realized?
The problem with Western TF comics is that they try to sell ideas whereas Japanese TF comics try to sell you toys. I can't tell you how many times I've read a Legends comic and thought "cool toy! I kinda want to buy it now!"
Meanwhile, from late Marvel to Dreamwave to early IDW was pushing cosmology and history, mid IDW was pushing idpol, and late IDW was pushing BORING history
Western TF comics just feel soulless because no one cares about the toys

i have been trying to explain this shit to people for over 30 years now
the feeling of "i want a toy of that" is as legit a feeling as "oh how sad, what a deep backstory"
a story that sells toys IS a story. We literally have toys so that we can invent stories in our heads, watch events play out. That's why toys have TV shows to shill them, and vice versa. A fun scenario for a toy is a fun scenario for a TV character.
THERE ARE LIMITS to this, naturally. and the older I get, the more I respect "the boring Batman episodes" where he angsts over some friend he can't help or some other thing that only very sick, sad children would play out with their toys, but that doesn't mean you don't still want some cool fun action stuff. And so often, it gets brushed off as mindless. By people who have never paid it any attention. Or who haven't been watching enough garbagey shit-ass action shows meant to sell really CHEAP toys, to understand -there is a wrong way to do it- and therefore a right way.

My latest impulse purchase arrived. Cripes he's such a turbochad. One thing I love about getting my hands on an older CHUG mold this day and age is just how many little surprises (and parts) there are.

His elbows and knees are double-jointed, and his wrists are ball-jointed so you can actually angle them. I love how his wheel-shoulders work similar to the G1 toy, but they also are connected to the center hood pieces which fold out of the way automatically to make room for the head to "automorph" into place when you fold the chest down. The way the feet lock the back-end together and the shin panel springs down was an unexpected treat as well.

Also this guy might have one of the greatest headsculpts of all time. I'm a sucker for metallic gold and yellow lightpiping. Toss in the folding blaster that tucks away under the bumper and the stylish flip-out speakers and what more do you need? I would have liked a shoulder cannon, actually, and it's kinda lame that his chest doesn't actually peg in for robot mode, but it's honestly pretty negligible. Absolute legend.

Iunno, I'm reading thru Marvel TF right now and I'd love toys of some of these guys: Xaaron, Straxxus, comic Blaster, etc. IDW had a good amount of OCs and redesigns I liked too, like Fort Max and the DJD.
Think the greater issue is just simply that HasTak have refused to make faithful toys of comic OCs until just recently, lol. I pounced on the Gen Selects Marvel Galvatron immediately when I saw I could get him for like $27 a few months ago, lmao.

What I love about this release is that with SS86 Jazz, if they redeco him to as Stepper he won't be as good as this since Stepper, unlike Jazz, was portrayed with door wings and that helps set him apart.

But the thing is no one wants to buy or make a glorified ad. Sure that's what they're getting paid to do but they also need to get people to buy the thing and if it's just a commercial every issue isn't going to last long. There needs to be some substance to keep people buying issues.

Oh nah, that's an old picture. He's yellowed since unfortunately. I swapped out the headbox for one from Inferno to downplay the yellowing and it's more accurate to the original toy too. You can see the yellow on the top of the figure.

Yeah, I always thought sunbow-accurate Jazz looked kinda naked with no door wings, no wheel shoulders, AND no shoulder cannon, so that was a big reason I was motivated to nab this guy over the SS86 mold.

I hadn't noticed there was a way to clip Wheeljack's handgun onto his shoulder, though. That's fantastic because I actually have a spare one. Thanks for the tip, anon.

There isn't. I cliped off a c-clip bar from something. I used a spring to give it tension and screwed it on to something that was in the perfect position on the back.

Actually, nevermind; I just noticed it's actually designed to interlock with the windshield/roof piece on his back to hold it in place. I got this guy without instructions but the both of the reviews I checked seemed pretty certain there was no way to lock the chest in. I guess the moral of the story is that reviewers are retards.

this guy has a positively absurd number of pins and screws. There are 4 pins being used to just hold the transparent headlight pieces in place; it's not even a transformation joint.

That's fair, for me I wouldn't have bought him if it weren't so cheap; for a Leader, it was a steal desu. Had it been at retail prices, yeah fo sho I would have skipped, but as it stands I like both iterations of the character, so I don't mind having dupes.

Got Shadowstriker today. Arms being attached from the back was a confusing let-down, but she's still a pretty alright figure. Getting the sides of the hood in place though was really annoying with how much pressure is required, and the side tabs kinda fought everything aligning, ended up snipping them off and it's a lot smoother now. I hope SideBurn has a lot of reshelling in the front and cuts those tabs entirely, they're not actually needed.

I wanted to put her with Scourge, Flamewar, and Diaclone Burnout as their own little team like in RID, but I think I've accidentally given him a harem lol.

I kind of feel like a Green Lantern ring would be marginally less useful for a Transformer, but its still pretty cool. Looks 0retty neat, too bad they kioled it I suppose. I would definitely have the charscters become Headmasters and alter the deco of current bots to correlate with the DC characters for the best effect. Hwo would be paired with who? For Batman I think Prowl is the best match. Superman and Prime are an obvious one.

I really didn't think so, but I don't know much about the actual Headmasters cartoon fandom. Could just be he was rarer to find on the pegs to begin with. I know on the original mold, his wings were made of soft plastic, which people complained about the possibility of cracking as it ages, but I've never actually heard any reports.

I think what they should have done is extended the torso by having the tiger arms swing forward on little hinge posts, similar to the larger movie Cheetor, and then extended the neck to compensate for that longer torso (which in turn would give his robot arm more freedom instead of having to use its pauldron as its own upper arm)

I haven't decided yet whether I'm going to try to get the neck adapter and reuse new inferno's head on my old inferno, but if I do, that's what Antagony's Scavenger head will be used for, as a replacement. Then he can just be a separate ant guy
But either way I want to change both of their ant legs, and I'm realizing I'm not sure how to go about it. How soft would you say the plastic is? surely a boxcutter would not be adequate.
I'm thinking maybe I dunk the legs in scalding water and try to reshape them using twist ties or something. I wish there was just an upgrade kit for them, even if it was a "cutting and drilling required" kind of upgrade kit. Because that, I could handle.

megatron looks damn amazing in those stripes.
Primal seems to have about the same fur color as the original release, which i'm just now realizing does have the same slightly yellow tint as the show, but I think should still be grayer. I might give him a touch of paint. and maybe smooth down his belly flap to be more show-accurate. I also never realized in the show his scimitars have teal handles.

also I guess repainting old megatron is not possible

That's kinda the point - Bombshell and Thundercracker are dead. Unicron just used their bodies and put a whole new dude into them. It's actually the same deal with Galvatron - Megatron is dead (and died during the reformatting process - you can see the exact moment it happens), and Galavtron is a whole new entity that just happens to be puppeting the body. The fact that the new characters have very little in common with their previous incarnations just proves that they AREN'T those characters - not anymore.

Different anon here, but you’d have to remove a pin in order to swap the chest pieces. But even if you could manage that, then the clear plastic on SS86 Ironhide’s chest window wouldn’t match the painted blue windows on the side of the van from Buzzworthy Dying Ironhide, so it depends if that would bother you. Plus, I’m not sure whether or not the shades of red would match well from each figure. I’d have to do a side-by-side comparison to see, but I’m too lazy to do that at almost 3am.

Got ROTB mainline Airazor in. She's pretty fantastic, wish she had ankle tilts and wrist swivels, and I kinda wish she could fold her wings in bird mode, but that aside she's really good.

Crazy that they went for Welker and got the complete opposite of what they wrote in the concept. As much as I love Welker as an actor, I never cared for G1 Megatron's voice. He managed to refine it a bit for Prime, but to me, Corey Burton absolutely nailed the perfect Megatron vibe in Animated. That's the voice I hear in my head whenever I imagine Megatron now.

I definitely agree, I can see these toys be the testbed for the Enegon shirt and pants Autobot combiners. If these do well and with enough feedback the designers could further refine them and we would actually get the Energon Autobots potentially in the next trilogy after Legacy and without any removals, of course they would be probably best made in Voyager Class given their size.

My guess is Robby seems to be filler piece. No doubt all the Cyber combiners are cross compatible with each other but Robby is the neutral 'colourless' part that can combine with any bot to fill in as a spare of sorts.

I love that between White Leo and the two dragon heads, this single bot is comprised of three different sentient lifeforms. I love the implication that the Monsterbots had to binary bond and be "tamed" by the Battle Beasts in order to unlock their true potential.

Yeah, Bumblebee just stands there and pulls his arms backwards just like Hot Shot. The only difference is extending the feet to give the combined mode bigger boots. This is what I like to see in toy engineering and development and I do hope the results the designers get from this small subline as well as feedback goes a long way to actually getting Generations Energon Autobots who faithfully combine just as it was portrayed in the show. Because let me tell you in the spaces that Hasbro are far more willing to listen to they want to turn the Energon Autobot combiners into Weaponizers and I think that's a shitty idea.

I can understand the sentiment, unlike Sixshot or Gigatron/RiD2001 Megatron, Energon Autobots are pretty involved with all of their modes so a few sacrifices are made. Plus IIRC even Aaron Archer himself said that they were pretty expensive to make being loaded with 4 modes all at once in a smaller size range. But I am still optimistic that Hasbro will find a way, them and Takara have made breakthroughs in engineering that was thought to be impossible back then. Plus there's technically nothing wrong with compromises, it doesn't stop the feeling that maybe the toy could've been better had it been this or that but nothing is perfect in reality, we all had to accept compromises one way or the other since birth.

Legacy Menasor worked because they had a trailer to work with. On another level, it worked for Motormaster because it allowed him to stay consistent with the other truck-and-trailer bots like Optimus.

That's also a good point. Trukk guy what combines with his trailer for a super mode is not a new concept in TF, and it's not a huge leap to apply that to a guy like Motormaster. Other combiners not so much, and you can see when 3P companies try and you just end up with a weird gormless combiner skeleton that goes unused in any other mode

Honestly i think the weakness of devastator is his component bot forms. All of his pieces (except maybe the dumptruck, longhaul?) Have terrible robot modes that fail to use any alt mode bits to their advantage. A new take on devastator should have redesigned figures, and just abandon the G1 shackles he's been bound to for so long.

This is double infuriating because the main problem with CW wasn't engineering in scrambling but incredibly stupid linewide planning and budgeting. Like Menasors problem isn't bad because his limbs can swap, it's the fact that Motormaster has ZERO transformation from the waist down so Had just goes horse stance for combined mode. Imagine a world where the torsos were leader class and came with all the kibble themselves, there would have been better torsos and not twice as many as sets of limbs and the deluxes would have been better by not having to factor in a terrible HFG into their budget/price.

For reals, though, he only has 4 official toys. Personally, I think his G1 figure and T30 Legends class figure are both super fun. I don't have the deluxe class GDO version, but it's just a repaint of Generations Kup, which I think is also a fun toy, so that's 3/4. I wish I was better at photos, I would like to keep youse guys up to date on my shitty painting adventures. my premium finish optimus now has slightly adjusted blue on his hands and feet, a sanded down and blued smoother belly, and a decent attempt at gray paint on his fur. one thing's for sure, if i'm really repainting my old primal white, that's going to be a biiiitch because the fur part has a lot of crevices. Probably take a lot of coats and involve a lot of touchups. but that's why i'm saving him for last.

The whole point and reason the Autobots from Energon are designed the way they are is to facilitate the shirt and pants mode gimmick thus bigger legs and sometimes very boxy torsos. There's a difference between removing gimmicks like minicon features or cyber keys since you could still replicate the features without the activation gimmick, but gutting Energon's combination gimmick would be stupid. Not having minicons is stupid as well, they're the main thing the cast fight over in thst show and they make neat robot toys. I hope we get more opportunities for them in the future, like an all minicon box set.

Agree that axing the minicons was still lame tho, I'm glad to see they're coming back but I really really hope we see them outside of exclusive box sets in the future. Essentially all the Deluxe Energon Autobot mostly use their lower half to serve as either shirt or pants while their upper half is folded back and away, the only exceptions is Inferno/Roadblock who does use his upper half as the shirt mode and Tow-Line who doesn't have a leg mode because he is a reference to the original Ironhide and Ratchet toy as seen in pic related. The only concessions were that some didn't have forward's and back leg articulation due to needing the waist split and some have the entire upper half just lying back and doing nothing. The bigger Autobot combiners such as Ironhide, Jetfire and Cliffjumper has that last problem exacerbated. But other than those concessions were a result of engineering at its infancy and can easily be fixed nowadays, the real problem is the janky and off proportioned look of the combined mode and I don't think that's a problem, that's just something inherent of the shirt pants combining gimmick and should be embraced.

it really is the one flaw. the original had that AND crummy hind legs, so this is an improvement I guess. both robot mode bodies are pretty different but I quite like both, and i'm surprised they were so okay with making such different robot mode looks, yet apparently so glued to the original beast face idea that they weren't willing to modify it.

aw hell yeah got my discount T-wrecks. i'm glad i held out, but he isn't nearly as ugly as I thought. the red is, indeed, as that anon said, a very brick red. Which is far from ideal, should have been richer and less orange, but it's not nearly as orange as it looked in some pictures where it was straight-up ketchup red.
also I keep forgetting he is a maximal. as far as i know, he has no faction symbols or anything.
Definitely going to need a little custom paint here and there, but I don't mind at all the main body gray that people were complaining about. It's nice and golden, though not as gold as the original. .... .... it's yellowed, isn't it.

I stripped the paint off Bombshell's chest. Then I painted his thighs and waist silver and his biceps black. I also gave him Shrapnel's black hands.

I painted Kickback's wings and gun silver to match, along with Shrapnel's pincers and thighs. I also painted the fists from Bombshell that I gave to Shrapnel black since I don't have a purple paint that matches the plastic and stripped the paint off his gun.

The "extra" gun are his bug legs that are attached underneath his arms.

No pics but I got SS86 Sludge and I'm in love with Dinobots all over again. What an awesome toy. His transformatiom is really interesting and he feels really good, and the insane part to me is that there is articulation in his Dino mode. My only complaimts aren't even real issues probably.. that being theres no good plave to store his gun in Dino mode except for an awkward hip mount, and the big gap where his Dino-legs came from on the bottom is sub optimal. But heu, incredible figure.

The down side? Now I have to get the rest of the Dinobots. SS86 Grim is going for frankly retarded prices on Ebay as well.

Thanks! Scraphook's parts are pretty limiting to work with, but his legs make for good thigh extensions and the ankles become good knees. The peg on his feet is a bit too far forward though so have to work with the two leg pieces at a bit of an angle. Trashmaster's parts being overall bulky and stout makes for a pretty good torso standalone, building onto it was fun and I really like the chest piece with the lift arms.

Actually that's a pretty good idea. Gotta work a bit with the left side of the motorcycle to get it attached, but they work pretty well attaching to the sides of Trashmaster's side skirts and fold up to the back nicely! This does kinda force the arms outwards, but I think the look's pretty worth it since it does give that bit of extra bulk the waist needed. Wouldn't have thought of connecting them this way on my own, thanks anon!

Sludge was always my favorite growing up, I had his debut episode on tape and I actually found him secondhand in a junk store as a kid. He rocketed to the most important toy in my toy box because of that, probably helped by his on-screen transformation being basically identical to his toy one.

NTA, but they're Cybertron Scrapmetal - basically the series' equivalents of the Insecticons. They come in three flavors - yellow, red, and blue - and are basically robo-locusts; they eat everything, and have only animal-level intelligence despite possessing robot modes. I think I remember one of the humans on the show refurbishing a dead one into his personal mecha at some point.
Using their Cyber-key gimmick makes a serrated bayonet pop out of their back cannons.
I own the red one; been meaning to track down one of the yellow and blue ones to have a mini-swarm.
