It must have taken me 1 minute from the realization to the order confirmation page. So glad they had excess as I love his design. I am always way too late to notice when the ones I want go up for pre-order.

I want to get back to it after a few years (got a Lagann kit that ended up having a piece completing missing from the frame and just stopped) and I figured I'd try a small, cheaper kit. How's the Koto Metal Gear Rex?
It's on sale for like 50 bucks on Amazon with free shipping.
Really it's just something to tide me over until the Armored Core kits release.

Is there any reason why RG kit releases have been kinda slow recently? I got into gunpla a couple months ago and really like the RG kits but after doing some googling there's been like one kit a year for the last couple years. If you want 1/144 there's HGs. Theres literally only a couple kits that don't exist in 1/144 scale.

Yeah, I've built quite a few of the G-Witch HGs and they've been fun but they don't quite hit the same as the RGs I've done. I think if the release trends keep up I might just split them up by putting MGs on a different shelf.

The Calibarn will likely happen in the next 6 months. Exia gets pretty regular reprints too. You'd be better off getting decals and markers elsewhere tho.

Define "good".

It's usable in a sense that it makes noises and the paint comes out of the airbrush, but personally I wouldn't use it unless there were no other compressors left in the world.

It puts out 10psi at the absolute most and probably not very steadily, and I doubt it will survive a prolonged session without overheating.

Point is, when I'm painting I want to be thinking about my model, not my compressor and what I can and cannot do with it. And I certainly don't want it crapping out on me in the middle of the session.

Normal thinning ratios for gaianotes and Mr color put you in the 15-18psi range. Thinning ratio for certain acrylics push you over 20psi. Both of which it will either not be able to do at all or struggle to do. I'm assuming a mini one is also tankless or has tank so small its pointless which means it'll be running the entire time with no breaks and will be both loud and can lead to overheating it easily.
It's just not worth it. You don't even have to spend a lot on a really nice compressor just get a decent full size one with a tank.

Those are toys, not models, with no accuracy to speak of. I guess they would look okay with gundams since those are also technically toys, but I don't know if you want to put in the effort and make a diorama only to have something in it that basically looks like pic related. It all depends on how high your standards are.

Except for the paint dust itself. For some reason people think that acrylic pigment particles in your lungs are somehow healthier than lacquer particles. Then again, people smoke and vape.

Ackshually, the lingering fumes is only a problem if your space has no ventilation. Paint dust sitting everywhere and going back into the air whenever the air moves is arguably harder to get rid of.

I wouldn't do any work that requires air particulates and sprays in the same place that I sleep... That's just asking for trouble. Like you, I don't have room for an airbrush either and use spray cans outside and then brush on acrylics in my room where I sleep.

I think it's best for your health to have a room of some kind where you are not living in/eating/sleeping that can be used. My local hobby shop actually provides airbrush booths and compressors if you provide your own airbrush which is pretty cool. Maybe look and see if you have something local like that or any place you can go to set one up.

That's what I figure, I just kind of hoped it was wrong. I might try rearranging some stuff in the living room, but those windows are big and I don't know if a spray booth would fit right.

I'm new to this hobby, and started with MS-06S ZAKU II, which I just finished today aside from stickers, which I'll finish tomorrow. It didn't turn out amazing, of course, but my only question is this: is it normal for these kits to have such an absurd amount of stickers? It's taking me forever to apply these and I definitely want to avoid something like this in the future.

Yes just spray by the window and keep the window open. My room has space but not enough for a big workspace. I have my table with pc and tv, the airbrush and paint table along right of that long the window and my bed about 2 yards right behind the tv desk chair.

You realize you are not obligated to apply all the stickers that are included, right? haha. I felt like I had to put as much as I could fit on my first couple kits, but then I realized I'm just tormenting myself for no reason. Put on what you feel looks good and leave the rest unless you like pumping it full of those suckers.

for Real Grade kits, yes, that is the the normal amount. most High Grade or Master Grade kits come with substantially less. HGs average around 5 or so stickers.

Does p-bandai stuff get reprinted regularly or is it a "Buy it while it's in stock or miss out forever" kinda thing? This used to be the case back when only Japan/Asia P-Bandai existed, but for the US store they seem to cycle popular stuff back around. Hell, I just was able to buy the Psycho Doga after feeling like I missed out last time.

Bought this strange contraption as a base for a small UStar handheld vise thingie I had for a while.
The hex wrench that comes with it doesn't fit the screws on the articulated arm, which I thought was funny. The arm can be combined with an alligator clip to hold small things for painting or soldering.

Ah, I see. After doing more research I can see that I picked one that was a bit much for a beginner (it's the original RG one, I think). I'll have to clean up the kit later - left a lot of stress marks despite my best efforts, all that sort of stuff. I picked up HG Blazing Gundam today, so I'm hoping that's just a little bit easier of a starting point, although the Zaku was pretty fun to put together.

When you airbrush lacquer paint (or lacquer thinner when you're cleaning into a pot), should you make sure it vents outside, like with a dryer duct? I just had a table with a box with a fan with an air filter over it inside a pretty open room. Wearing a filter mask of course.
Some guy I saw online was was telling someone off for not properly venting while brushing lacquer, and it scared me enough to not even attempt painting for the past few months.
I also worry about unmasked family being around as well.

This kit is a pain in the fucking ass so far. So many undergated parts and stickers. But it's still great despite that. I've only put together the Red Dragon and it's phenomenal once complete, a great update of the original toy with surprisingly good articulation. The plastic feels very dense too, it doesn't feel like your typical plamo once finished. It feels more like a completed, weighty action figure rather than a hollow kit. Maybe this is due to how well the space is filled out internally too, with all the transformation parts, and the tightness of all the joints.

Minipla team, I see you. Keep doing good work.

I'm not all that experienced in the gunplas but there's a mech I am trying to find a kit for and I am a bit confused with it all. What it is, is the ironfoot from dougram and when I check online the kits that I'm seeing fall into 2 categories usually.
First are kits on the cheaper end, 50-70 bucks, and when I look at them the boxes seem beat up like the pic and they have a cylindrical missile rack over the left shoulder. The second ones are a lot more expensive and have a rectangular missile rack.
Now, I would prefer to not drop a hundred dollars on a single model, but the pictures of the cheaper kits make me think they're pretty old, and something about opening up an old probably out of production kit makes me hesitant to go for any of them. Of course, I checked a couple of other sites and they seem to say that those kits are discontinued or at least not carried by the shops I checked so that isn't helping either.
So what is the deal with all of these things?

For those who cares, the new DSPIAE AT-TVA&B (left) is almost exactly the same as the old AT-TV(right) except it weighs a metric shitton (because it's made of steel and not aluminum) and the vise bit can be separated from the base. Which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your applications.

Oh, it's fine for the most part, but you may end up with some stuff like seams in unattractive places, outdated engineering, and some weird choices from time to time. Max Factory really tries to put out quality products I think, they just don't have nearly as much plamo experience as Bandai.

I recommend Bandai for a first time because I know (at least if I pick the right kit), it will be a well-engineered, decently color separated, and super solid kit that can stand up to newbie building practices (like leaving nubs, twisting parts off runners, etc.) It's like the safest bet if I want them to have a great first experience.

While were on the topic of Dspiae, I was looking into mini desktop vacs to help keep my desk clean. Does anyone know if there are any quality ones worth purchasing that aren't terribly expensive? I was looking at the Dspiae vac as it looks like a decent size and nice design, but can't really find much info about it and I don't think those puck shaped micro vacuums will be ideal for getting into nooks and awakward areas.

Honestly I picked up a small handheld vacuum off Aliexpress for $5 and it's been great. Charges off usb so no need to worry about batteries or anything, I mainly use it plugged in and unplug it only if I need to go beyond my table or to dump out all the dust and plastic.

Modelling epoxy putty has smaller grain size and longer working times unlike plumbing or other hardware store ones.

Tamiya masking tape is just the right tackiness and won't peel your paint.

Hobby branded knives are debatable, you can use generic design knives just that you have to switch the blades out more often, the price works out to be the same. Handles are usually identical in function too.

Last time I saw it on amazon it was 120yen, doesn't get much cheaper than that.

There is an application for each of the 3. Masking sol is good for spot applications where it stays in place and doesn't run, vallejo is good for filling large areas and GSC is for everything else in between.

Just don't buy chinkshit. They break easily and atomize paint worse. Theres a few for 80-100 that are pretty good if you don't want to go in the deep end. Although for just about 50 more you can get the iwata eclipse hpcs which is an all around high quality airbrush

The eg is easy to build, but lacks in accessories. The hg is ok, decent but an aged kit. The rg is a masterpiece. However youd be better off spending 50 on tools as a new builder, rg can be done with no experiencebut youll be habing issues pop up an unexperienced builder can struggle with. Dont feel bad if you cant throw 50 at a kit, save up 10 dollars here and there until you can afford it.

Listen to the other poster about the RG, but I would actually buy the EG instead of the HG. Yes, the EG is meant to be a "simple beginner kit," but it is also a great kit with modern engineering. I really dig it despite the lack of accessories, and the HG is fairly outdated at this point.

I would go EG and RG if I could pick two, not HG and RG.

get a pair of tweezers with blunt/rounded tips from the dollar store. They will make decal application a breeze. Also, make sure they don't have texture or teeth inside the grips, those may damage stickers.

Ah dont take them too seriously. If you want to have an easy time,single bladed cutters help, cut close to the part but not flat against it, leave about a credit card thick nub. A glass file helps alot, or some sanding sponges. Go from low to higher grit sanding at the nub. A 300 or 400 will probably work well enough for removal then up to 1000 etc to smooth it over. Dont press down hard its not metal. Just a nice even down pressure and the back and forth movement doing the work.

those white marks are stress marks in the plastic and they can't be removed by sanding. although sometimes you can dull them just by applying physical pressure so try rubbing with your numbnail.
they can happen if you clip the nub too close to the surface, the stress will travel through the plastic nub into the main body. to fix it just make sure to clip the nub a bit further away and then reemove the rest with something other than your nippers, like a hobby knife or sandpaper.

no, what you really need to do is decrease the speed of sound in plastic so you can start rubbing with your thumbnail before the stress has time to travel through the plastic far enough

like any cutting tool they'll eventually dull, depending on how much you use/abuse them. it's probably possible to sharpen the blades rather than replacing them but if you've got a cheap pair it might be more effort than it's worth.

Thanks for the quick answer. I'm looking at reviews for it and it says it does such a good job that you can cut right up against the plastic after leaving a small nub then go straight to sanding, skipping the need for hobby knife cuts on every piece. Is this true? Sounds like bullshit to me, but if it's true then I think it's definitely worth the price.

the downside is that to achieve this sharpness the blade is very thin and fragile
so you still need a second nipper for doing most of the work and only use these for the last bit of nub trimming.
if you already have a first set of nippers then you are fine

Roger, so it's for a finishing touch then. Still seems easier than pulling out the hobby knife. If you'd have to put a number on it, if cutting off the nub with the knife then sanding gives you a 100% result in quality, is doing a second cut with the Godhand nippers then sanding equivalent to a 95% or so? For example if you had a critical part with a bad nub placement would you still pull out the knife?

It is thin, but it's not so fragile as to break from proper cutting.
I am still using my old SPN-120 (from >>10686046 pic related), it's 10 years old now and I use it both to cut off the sprue and to clean. I only recently started using a fresh SPN-120 for super-precise micro cuts I needed for my Shigure, but the old one is still good for 90% of the work.

Okay. You are making me doubt myself heavily, I'm starting to think I've been using dry transfers with water now because they really haven't been a "rare" thing for me. I built the MG RX-78-02 the origins version which had them, the MG tallgeese which had them and the HG zaku halfcannon, those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. If they were dry transfers, that is very funny to me. Regardless, they stuck and are still on my suits to this day.

Nobody said it was impossible. You can get SPN-120s to cut some pretty hard shit under the right conditions (material is thin enough and not TOO hard, cut all the way back on the blade, go extremely slow and steady, making sure to slice rather than snip). But it is still generally not a recommended risk to take, plus a lot of people are sloppy and cannot listen to directions, so it's easier to just say "it can't, don't do it."

Because they are very elastic: https://www.uschivdr.com/products-in-detail/rigging/ (the 0.03mm one) and gluing the tiedowns so they don't pull on the horizontal lines takes some practice. Also if you stretch them too much they are fully capable of bending the PE.

Off topic, but does anyone have any dusting tips? I live in the guest house on my family's property and it has one of those split AC units. I dust/Vacuum twice a week meticulously and dust builds up like crazy. The main house barely gets any dust when I clean in there. I can't get a better filter for the split unit either. I can't even install a screen protector in this place without getting dust everywhere.

I am also fighting a losing battle to a dusty house. I eventually just stopped trying to fight it, and got glass cases and sealed up all the cracks. My toys don't feel as accessible now, but it's less work.

if you don't want to worry about aggressive lacquer solvents fucking up your acrylic paint you can just use mr topcoat instead.
they look the same but mr. super clear is lacquer based while mr. topcoat is acrylic (less reactive, safe with pretty much everything)

Hey, I think you've said once that you're using a needle bottle to apply liquid mask. But why not a regular dropper bottle or a needle-less syringe?
