So why the fuck does Lain still have a following? I remember watching it back in the day and found it to be the most boring, pretentious shit imaginable. There were long drawn out periods where nothing happened. Not even music or background animation. Lain herself had all the charm of a wet paper sack. And whole "It's the internet, but we're calling it the wired instead" just made no sense. A spade is a spade unless you want to be "deep" I guess.

There were a lot of heady, existential anime to come out after Evangelion. Most were better than Lain by a wide margin. (Rahxephon, Wolf's Rain, Brain Powered, Big O, etc.) So why are people still philosophically jerking off to an emotionless girl scrolling on her computer: the series?

I had the same thoughts and admittedly skipped through a lot of it to get to the parts where anything actually happened, but after the fact I found it grew on me. Maybe its just the nostalgia of the time. Can't say for sure. I just think its neat, personally.

Because she's an underage girl who bends over her computer in a little dress. That and the intro song. That's the real reason why the Lain fandom ever existed and I say this as someone who enjoyed it back when I was a teenager and I thought it was totally deep.
If she were a 27 year old chain-smoking, nail-biting fujoshi with dark eye bags and scruffy hair nobody would give the slightest fuck about the plot and the pretentious babble in that anime.
