A lot of toys get based on characters who aren’t good or were conceived with this vague corporate mindset of ‘how can we capture the original black Panther movie audience’ then proceed to make stuff aimed at black people who just don’t like it and prefer to watch DBZ. Like the Cleveland show.

The Chinese come4arts line, for example of a good line, is good and high effort. They’re great, we’ll designed, not even characters I know and I really like them. I can conceive of them being popular with streetwear/hypebeast types because they look well made.

It feels representation was more hardcore back in the 80's. You had characters in wheelchairs and all sorts of shit. The difference is it wasn't typically called out, companies put people of all colors in cartoons because it may be better for business, but they wouldn't scream "LOOK AT US WE'RE DIVERSE".

That "trend" was more of the 90s, for example with the power rangers(yellow ranger and black ranger) or the Captain planet and the planeteers cartoon. All those shows and their respective toy lines had diversity BUT it was diversity done right.

90s diversity = diversity done right.

Modern diversity = forced diversity.

All of the top fashion doll lines right now (Rainbow High, Lol Omg, Disney ILY 4Ever) feature more black/brown dolls than anything else. They still sell really well because they are high quality and have good designs. So I think the point is if toys are good quality, the diversity aspect doesn't really matter or bother anybody. I don't think kids themselves really care what color the toys are either way

Marvel: Haven't seen any issues with Black Panther or Miles selling. They have great designs. The other brown characters that fail have boring designs.

Rose kinda makes sense because she was a mechanic or something. But Finn and Poe look on par with Han Solo’s outfits creativity. I blame that aesthetic on Lucas for starting it. The sequels still are shit even for the schlock that is Star Wars.

On the other hand, female Kamen Rider characters are still a minority simply because the toku demographic doesn't want them. Female characters in shounen franchises can also be massively unpopular, but then there are characters like Nezuko who sells merch.
