Funny story. During 2021 when the economic toll of Covid was starting to hit, there was a shortage of gunpla model kits coming into hobby shops here in the US. I know my local HobbyTown was bare of Gunpla... Except for SD Gundam kits. Even during a nearly year long drought of new model kits, people wouldn't buy those little buggers. And now that stores have been restocked of new kits, those SD Gundam kits are still there, gathering dust at the bottom of the shelf. So yeah, I'm pretty sure Americans as a whole hate the whole SD thing, no matter how hard Japan tries to merchandise it to us.
Can't tell you why Pops are popular though. Maybe Bandai should follow whatever marketing strategy that Funko is doing.
