Pokemon, up until recently, always kept Ash but it was still the same guy with the same lived experience. Yu-Gi-Oh and Beyblade introduced new protagonists, and while people have to get used to them, it creates a sense of legacy by having the old ones still exist in-universe, plus you can always pull them out again when you need to shill nostalgia. Rebooting like this is like only taking the weaknesses of both approaches, it's an entirely separate guy who has the same name and partner for some reason but none of the legacy
