Felt the same conflicting emotions with the Lego Batwing but I ended up opening it and found a missing piece. Did I make a mistake? Admittedly this Batwing looks pretty bad as compared to other batwings but it still has its novelty.

The cool thing about Lego reselling is that you can open it up, build it and play with it and after a few years you can still sell it at a profit if you kept the box. Especially if it's a popular set. Some used ones go for almost as much as brand new.

Also in my opinion if a set it 99% generic pieces it's not really that valuable. What's more valuable is anything printed and any figures with new prints.

Gold's buying power stays the same throughout the years. If you could buy a house with three gold bricks back then, you still can now. Its value stays the same RE its ability to buy things.
Collectible lego value goes up faster than inflation, which is better than staying the same.

most lego sets are produced in such high quantities, it's pointless playing this game of whether something will actually go up in value or not because its completely random, you'll have to play an insanely long waiting game. star wars usually jumps the most in price after retiring but if it's dependent on an exclusive figure you always risk that lego might just reissue the figure in a cheaper set that devalues it

just buy what you like and if you find something on discount, just enjoy it. the galaxy explorer is a great set but it bombed on store shelves and was heavily clearanced for a year. just have fun with it
