Dug out transmetal Airazor after this, by all rights I feel it should have aged poorly but she's actually still pretty fun. The wings can help with balancing issues and act as extra legs or stands
I never got the third mode and didn't do it as a kid, thought the extra arms were guns, the boat-plane mode is not very convincing. I also didn't know how to properly tab the chest in for the bird mode

Terrorsaur looked alright as far as being back-heavy was concerned. I know Rattrap and Rampage are pretty notorious about that though. Wish I got a TM Terrorsaur although really it'd be super to have a modern Depth Charge. Unless of course it sucks

spindly sure but often super long.
rampage didn't, and technically airazor's are due to nonfoldawaying bird feet, but terrorsaur and TM2 blackarachnia are kind of the worst offenders because the long arms hurt every mode. there was no reason for it to be that way.

Oh fuck I forgot about Terrorsaur's gorilla arms. TM2 BA is very hard to look at, and I'm not even sure what I'm looking at, I feel a lot of things here hurt a lot of modes.

her face is weird but I think the TV version is worse
and the show cheated her robot mode proportions but also fucked up her beast mode head, so the thirdparty one isn't really what I want either. I hope hasbro redoes it, and this time, makes the spider body turn more cleanly into a robot, instead of most of the beast mode ending up on her shoulders. Though it does split up creatively, at least. I feel like a male spiderformer would work better for this transforming scheme, since a male spider has a smaller abdomen, and a bulkier robot mode body doesn't need to just fold away into nothing like a skinny female one.

When I see fembots who are basically shellformers, part of me is sad because that could have been a decent idea for a different franchise. if it wasn't about transforming robots, but rather humanoid androids or cyborgs who put on animal-themed armor which they can fold up inside and become the full animal, that would work better and be satisfying.

They are possible to do without shellforming but the engineers at Hasbro are retarded. Check Jizaitoys. His transformation schemes are weird but make efficient use of the vehicle's mass.

I looked up some jizaitoys and they do look pretty neat, but nearly all are a variation of 'just fold the limbs into a rectangle' to the point that one of them turns into a jesus-on-a-cross. I'm not sure he'd be able to handle "the entire car interior needs to be modeled but not involved in the robot mode unless you want to pretend the plush seats transform into armor"

in the same way that a robot-animal is much easier to transform than a flesh-animal that has to turn into a metal robot without showing the metal parts in beast mode.

she can look like a stylized female like the others look like stylized males. she doesn't have to look like something you could imagine cleaning houses in a 70s b-movie.
Geometric shapes. feminine ones, but why not geometric shapes made of different vehicle parts. thighs that are thicker at the top than down at the knee. petite feet. shoulders narrower than the hips. a decently large, round head that kind of thing.

well i'll give it this, it's a kibble-free robot mode and a car mode that... doesn't look like it's made of robot parts.. now I couldn't tell you what it DOES look like because it's kind of a mess, but that is still a pretty dull C3PO meets Rockman kinda robot mode to me. Transformers should have more Gundam in their blood. and honestly that is not a very feminine robot mode either, it's pretty neuter.

it's okay if you like that kind of robot, anon. but you have to admit, it's a little weird compared to other G1 designs, right? the movie kinda went in weird design directions. Not just with the fembots, but with some of the offworld robots. very unusual looking stuff. I'm not saying it's bad, but I'd rather get some who are not like that

now that said, I mean, I love Beast Wars, and its robot modes are TOTALLY sleek and rounded, males and females alike... on the show. but most of those models had to cheat pretty hard.

these are not the movie designs those. these look pretty great. Maybe perfect, though you could fit more vehicle parts into them if their thighs and chests were bigger, but I prefer more svelte females myself so if it's sexy we're going for... this is pretty good

cyclegals work well, but when I look at arcee's altmode, it LOOKS like it'd quite nicely form a fembot. The front and rear fenders both look like they're meant to transform into shapely limbs / limb parts. and the rest shouldn't have to hide either.

I always took it to be like they were the next generation Cybertronians, the movie was set in the future after all. The aesthetic shared by Kup, Arcee, Blur, even Cyclonus and Scourge just seemed 'future transformers' to me as a kid even though the back of my mind told me "someone else designed these" before I even knew what toy designers were.

That buggy mode has one hell of a backend, but that's just sandstorm I guess. Flat feet with a hinged heel is also concerning. Otherwise yeah I'm liking what I'm seeing, certainly ended up better than blitzwing did with that leader budget

Not bad looking, and it's cool that he has a working winch with a cage. While I still love my T30 Sandstorm, I suppose this would be better to keep with my Wreckers - at least he'll finally be in-scale with my WnR Springer. Gonna miss that VTOL copter mode the T30 had, though, even if it was inaccurate, but a Sea Stallion is fine, too, I guess.

I never got why people preferred 80's cartoon designs to the toys in ANY franchise. I recently got into He-man because I needed a break from Transformers and they went full cartoon accuracy. I feel cursed. Sure I love some of these old cartoons but the cartoon designs are almost always cheap made to animate better with no details.

Luckily he was like in 1(ish) episodes of the G1 and was never front and center so I doubt their will be much reeing if any at all. I like what I'm seeing but this thing is a lot of steps down from the Voyager Springer retool from T30.

It's a hybrid of both really
It's got the head shape, shoulder detail, black thighs, roll cage and I believe the silver gun from the toon
And then the mask, chest and shin detail, silver rims and larger black gun from the toy
The alt modes also much more strongly resemble the toy, but the toon took a lot of liberties with them so it's not really surprising

More likely, the class and price point are because he's a triple-changer and requires more parts and more overall engineering for his transformations. Considering he ended up looking better than Blitzwing in all of his modes, I think it was worth the bump-up.

Its not so much looseness as the socket isn't a proper ball socket? Its just a put that the ball can sit in and has virtually no grip on the ball. A little glue or something to thicken it up would probably work but its such a strange design choice I thought I might just have a defective one or was just wrong.

Probably because I never got into them. I still had a VCR til late 2012, and I mostly watched movies online or on tv. Let me think, in total, the only DVDs I have are... the lion king, the Homestar collection, one crappy simpsons christmas compilation I got as a gift, uhh Spider-Man 2 that I also got as a gift I think... the aforementioned hello kitty.... and 2 or 3 old out of print european movies, mostly just for preservation purposes.

So thats the thing, the socket is there, its just the actual shape of it means it doesn't grip the ball very well. Like, the actual way it was designed and molded just meant it would only sit on top of the ball instead of going in a bit to get a good purchase. Its completely bizarre and its really throwing me off. Just wanted to see if others thought the same with theirs.

I'll see if I can find some reviews, so far its just articles and previews from before it was released.

I think I know what you're talking about but there was nothing else included, and the instructions basically say "just pop it on".
I also noticed the neck ball join isn't really long enough to be sitting snug in there either, even if the socket was molded properly.

Watching the only review on YouTube for it and theres no mention of any issue of the head, so I'm worried its just mine. It'd have to be a molding issue because nothing appears to be missing, the socket is just crap.

Of you're already considering it just for Chainclaw, I'd say go for it. The Optimus is a little plain, but makes for an excellent base for customization. He's also a fantastic desk/travel toy, I take mine everywhere. I didn't think much of Chainclaw when I got him, but I ended up liking him too.

you could make a jelly out of some pearlescent or even iridescent opaque plastic, though. not all of them are clear as glass, plenty are quite opaque.

Actually, he WAS transparent. They changed him from his planned orangeish brown to purple, but the plastic itself still ended up being translucent. Same with the original Blackarachnia, actually - she was cast in a smokey transparent black, not solid plastic.

Also speaking of Legacy, does anyone know why almost every figure has this symbol on it? I'm not talking like they just use rectangles everywhere. I noticed it a while ago but now I noticed it on Omega Prime as well. Sometimes it's hidden on figures. Is this a designer's signature or something? Or is it to sort of signal that the figure belongs to the Legacy line? It's weird because I have a few figures in front of me and it's on Armada Prime and Towline for example and I know I've seen it on others. Just some weird rectangular hexagon thing.

both have their flaws. individual figures are harder to get, shipping is more of a problem, you might avoid buying one without the rest out of fear of an incomplete set...

Like for example they're making new Phase 1 Clones, and the improvements over the ones from a couple years back are totally marginal. By comparison, the same applies to only a few Transformers figures for me, that being most of the G1 and UT figures from the past few years, and a couple RotF ones they've put out in SS. Ask some people on here and if they have ER Optimus, it's 50/50 if they'll say they'd want to get the 86 Commander in a few months or not (personally I hate ER Prime lmao but that's besides the point).
Point is just that I feel anything that isn't G1 or UT is being either intentionally made into not what fans're hoping for, or they're unintentionally being hit with poor designs/budget cuts or just being too significantly outdated (early Armada in Legacy, Kingdom Beasts, literally anything 2007 film in SS).

There was something mentioned recently about Legacy that was an eye opener. They brought up that designs for many legacy figures were apparently made with the intention of making figures fall in line with G1 design conventions, not just prime stuff. This explains the weird design decisions with figures like G2 Laser Prime keeping the G1, it wasn't a budget issue they kept the legs intentionally to make it more G1.

Semi related, but I loved prime Predaking - not just because dragons are awesome (though that's certainly a factor), but because he was basically a callback to the original concept art for G1 Predaking.

I'm such a huge fan of this mold. I have the G2 Megatron version and it's just such a fun toy; great balance between all three modes, and changing between any two of them is so intuitive and satisfying that I can't look at him without wanting to transform him. I especially love the way the whole cockpit/nosecone flips out, it's so satisfying. It feels like heresy, but this guy is genuinely my favorite triple-changer and I don't see that changing any time soon; he just barely edges out T30 Springer/Sandstorm, probably directly because of how much more satisfying his transformations are.

It's weird how versatile the body is, too; it works as Blitzwing, and Megatron, then you can pop on just about any other head and it also becomes a convincing elite-class brute of no particular origin.
