Hi guys. I'm getting a lot of stuttering over HO EZ Track turnouts. It's a small layout so I'm just switching them manually, if that matters. The packaging mentions powering the frog if running DC, but I'm now using DCC so I assume that's a no-go. Is there anything I can do to get trains to go over them smoothly?

I'm not getting derailments or anything (maybe the occasional uncoupling but I'll deal with that later). The momentary loss of power is driving me nuts, though.

The first problem is Bachmann EZ track turnouts are the worst quality turnouts on the market next to Atlas ones. The second problem is small locos do not like turnouts generally because the small wheelbase doesn't allow them to get enough power to go over the turnout. The only way to rectify it would be to either swap the decoder with one that has a power capacitor to allow it to give it enough power to go over a dead piece of track. The third option see below:

Not true they put that there for "liability reasons" but there is no difference. You just need an auto reverser to reverse the polarity, so you don't get a short. https://dccwiki.com/Wiring_Crossings

Looking to get a 2-6-2 PRAIRIE but a new one comes with the E-Z-Mate Mark II couplers. Since its Union Pacific I want to use the coaches I already have. How hard is it to convert them to the new Knuckle couplers?

Kind of weird that the other thread was archived over this one, but whatever.
I'm unsure what to go with for starting a layout, I have lots of things I want to do, but I just can't decided which way to proceed. I want to run some trains!

Also, are there any non-german smaller z-scale locos? All I've found is a Mikado, which doesn't really work for the whim I'm following.

I've had to convert a few of those Old Time cars myself (Not the passenger ones but the ones in this picture). I converted them to Micro-Trains couplers using this set

Z is pretty much nonexistent outside of Germany/USA/Japan, and most US railroads favored larger 0-8-0s with tenders and the like for shunting rather than tank engines. Looking around for Japanese Z scale steam I'm only really finding 2-6-4Ts.

It’s an over under loop using o 72 curves powered by a wall unit from a starter kit. No power dips as long as all the track connections are good.

Well i finished my MQT patch out boxcar this weekend. I did one side with a newer red door like it had to be replaced, and I used the original black door on the other side and weathered it with the car. Im pretty happy with it

It's real easy once you have everything in front of you. Those were my first ever coupler install too and it went kinda like this
>Remove the box holding the old coupler in place
>Trim the sides of the side of the trip pin you have to insert into the coupler
>Put both parts of the shank together (Knuckle and Lip) by sliding the trip pin through them
>Put adaptor into draft gear box facing up
>Flex the spring out a little and put it into the adaptor
>Put knuckle coupler assembly into the adaptor pushing down the spring, making sure the trip shank faces towards the opening on the draft gear box
>Push adaptor down 90 degrees
>Push assembly into the coupler
All you need tools wise is a small flathead screwdriver and an xacto knife.

It depends which of the three releases your model is. If it's the first release (1995) then a common point of failure is bad tender pickups/not enough current being delivered to the motor. But since your headlight turns on I don't think that's the problem. I had one where a tiny piece of traction tyre broke off and got jammed in the gear teeth, but even then it was still running; it just tried to jump the tracks as it did so. Bend side rods, bad axles on the driving wheels, or a bent drawbar might also cause failures, but at least with those you'd see it making an attempt before either betting locked up, having the wheels slip, or being forced up and possibly off the tracks.

I'm no expert, but if I had to guess, it sounds like your motor is just shot. That being said, I'd have someone who actually knows what they're doing more than some rando in the internet take a look at it.

I have about 20 or so locomotives, 30ish coaches, and a little under 60 freight cars (I keep track via spreadsheet so I don't overlap on road numbers), the stuff I bought yesterday was mostly just to boost the rolling stock collection (Hence 1 loco vs 14 cars). The Hudson was 100% a good deal since regular Con-Cor Hudsons tend to go for around $200 (And the streamlined ones for even higher) while the cars I just picked out stuff that looked neat (Like that flat car above the Hudson comes with some model tractors)

Those of you who use sectional track (as I do)... for yards and customer connections, do you depress your track into the ground or build up the surrounding terrain?

In my area the main track is as elevated as plastic roadbed, so that's fine. But there's no real elevation off the main track.

I think I'd isolate the double crossover and have a separate DC controller for each of the two tracks.
