>>10898979I like how you don't actually contradict what I've said and basically confirmed that sites hosting art were rare, because rpgamer was basically the largest one and it was still small.
>since the typical consumer monitor res in the late 90s was 1024x768Yes, everything is low res compared to modern times, but even for their time sites showing art were low res for their time. AGain, you really didn't see sites offering wallpaper sized or larger images until the 00s (possibly late 99)
I was on AOL during the 90s and trading art with other people, and aside from IRC and news groups, the only way to really get high res anything was email and IMs (direct connect). I don't remember when they started allowing large files though.
Seriously, the only places that had a shit ton of images were just porn sites and the vast majority charged $ if you wanted something larger than 320x240
There's a reason why there's a complete dearth of toy photos from the 90s and even 00s on the internet, because hosting photos in any amount was too expensive.
Take this photo for instance. This was mid-00s and they still had to conserve space, by using what would be considered medium quality resolutions in the 90s. So if it was this bad in the 00s, you can infer it was worse in the 90s when the infrastructure was barely being built.
These photos were taken by Filex de Cobray and he by far had the best photos back in the day... in the 00s, because in the 90s, you just didn't see this shit anywhere unless you personally knew them. And it felt the same way in the 90s with artfags.
