For new releases? Definitely just keeping up with pre-orders and release schedules like you said. I just buy things MSRP if I can, outside of special releases (where I'm kind at the whim of the resellers regardless). I try to group new releases as close as possible, and most stuff I like is fairly readily available. If I miss a more expensive release (like I did with the Godzilla Tower recently), I just go immediately online and buy it for the cheapest price I can find ASAP. X-Plus and other statue stuff just tends to get more expensive after the pre-order windows close.
For older stuff? Definitely not eBay. Sometimes you can get lucky on eBay and get acceptable listings, but usually its way way waaay overpriced. Sometimes places like Amazon, HLJ, or even BBTS list older release stuff and sometimes at a discount. Mandarake is good for even older stuff, or other online JP sites like it.
