Shame it doesn't work. If used as a shield, you won't see it, and if you equip it on Thundertron's shoulder, the flag will be upside-down. At least Thundertron had a better head, but I don't think it's worth it.

I don't get why they didn't just release the mainline as Lio Prime or Go Prime. They have recolors, but they just release Thundertron twice.

Also, this does confirm one thing, Thunderhowl is going to be more than just a repaint since the alt head is also Thundertron.

I didn't even know you could do that, I've never tried. As much as I gripe about Thundertron I do like that his removable foot can become a parrot sorta, if you squint hard enough. Still, he wasn't worth the $30ish I paid when he was first coming out.

Got my beast basics in today, and I’m half and half on them. Powerpinch and Buzzsaw both had transformation schemes that threw me for a bit of a loop, but Powerpinch is pretty solid all around, and I think he’s the best of the three I ordered. Buzzsaw looks unique and fantastic and has great color choices, but he’s got equally weird design decisions, like the spring and whatever the hell is going on with his right hand. Drill bit is the one I like the least. His robot mode looks almost incomplete thanks to how the arms are assembled, and his beast mode looks like it’s on heroin. Plus, a lot of his parts don’t really tab into anything, so his legs are just… sitting there underneath his beast mode. Gonna hope I can get sky hammer soonish.

Yeah, air hammer, my bad. I do really dig the aesthetic of the basics though, despite how many issues bug formers back then had with hiding their insect legs. It’s super bad on drill bit, since it interferes with his drill arm.

Powerpinch and Razorclaw are both GOAT. Drill-Bit is kinda eh, so it's strange that the reused his transformation for Transmetal Rattrap. Never handled Buzzsaw, but Clawjaw is pretty cool even if he's not on the level of PP and RC.

Since they have no canon, I like to think of them as elemental space demons who, when dealing with the Cybertronians, have adopted forms based on who they're fighting.

Also the Fossilizers are creations of theirs who've stopped being their sways and chosen to be Predacons and Maximals instead. Kind of like the cartoon origin with the Quintessons.

Since the Fossilizers are Maximals and Predacons I like to think of them as corrupted statis pods like Transmutate where the pods turned them into the actual skeletons instead of giving them proper beast modes. Dracodon and Vertibreak were less corrupted than the others, so they got conventional transformations where the bigger ones didn't.

It's kind of cheesey, but the idea of the bat turning into a Jolly Roger is brilliant conceptually. It would have been ever better if they had used the Laserbeak mold (to go for a parrot) but this is fun and the set already has a bird character in it.

i really want him too. and I wonder if it's possible to do the two threeformers on a modern budget without ruining them. I mean, there's not much you can do with silverbolt. he's a bird with a robot under his body, that contributes next to nothing to the combined body. But I would want prowl and ironhide changed completely, they looked stupid. and they have a really daunting task, Prowl has to have a head hidden inside him that lines up with his mane, and Ironhide has to become basically the whole body while still becoming a decent robot..
I would actually be okay with them ditching the individual robot modes, if that was the only way to make it good.

tripredacus needs very little work though. just give him better hands, and give ramhorn better hands too.

just watched a review of the original toy, then watched the combination in BW2. Ironhide is basically just like the landsaurus so they could just make him the biggest out of the three. oddly, I think making ironhide way bigger proportionately (say, they scale Prowl up to just below Lio Convoy size (this might fuck up the 'Lio Jr' thing), then they make Ironhide as much bigger as an elephant would be to a lion) it would help a lot. The original toy had a giant head thanks to prowl, and those big wing things only get in the way of arm articulation, so they can be smaller.
I doubt any new transformation could solve the tusks being so ridiculous, maybe just give in and partsform those.
but really Ironhide sucks in every mode. I don't want big hollow elephant-head-halves hanging off of his calves. at least make them pauldrons, but ideally just fold the trunk up and move the entire head quietly somewhere else.

but going by how authentic they were to magmatron, warts and all, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

It feels a lot more even for all members, you can't Seaclamp be the biggest, just be able to turn into legs completely so that means his entire body. Cicadacona nd Ramhorn are pretty uch just how the seasaurus and skysaurus connects together, so the problem will be to engineer Seaclamp to be good legs that can hold a lot of weight

Springloaded gimmick. There's a latch beneath his tail. When pressed, the back splits open as the ballista swings up through it.The head swings in on it's own spring, having been held up by the back flaps and ballista buttend. In turn, the ballista bottom bonks him square in the face, making the beak fold flush in the body.

His beak also has a lower jaw, but most pictures online don't seem to show that off.

The wings are indeed stuck in that tucked away position. The deployers weren't great toys. But I would love to see at least Rav and Chro get updated figures.

just to see what the anime proportions are like compared to the toys. Like Magnaboss in the anime, has more substantial legs compared to the original toy so in theory if you modernize the design you would have to make bigger legs to hold the weight. The same thing with Tripredacus, the anime has more substantial legs to hold the weight so you have to take that into account when engineering the toy. This is why Magmatron is so succesful, its all in the legs

Legacy Animated Optimus is another disappointment. While the robot mode is far better in person, the truck is a steaming wreck compared to the sleek perfection of the classic toy. How could they not hide the feet? Why not just make it transform similarly to the old toy instead of overcomplicating it, giving it a shitty truck trailer, stressed plastic clips out of the box, and a needlessly involved conversion method?

I cannot grasp the reasoning behind changing what worked for the worse. Steal the old design, make it blocky, remove the gimmicks, give it more articulation, scale it down. Bam, it would look better and I'd hate myself less while transforming it.

Oh, and the mushroom pegs came with excess plastic ridges that I had to trim down with an exacto, and I'd have torn the peg off or twisted it out of the socket if I hadn't. Seems like QC is dropping along with designer intellect.

They are still very affordable. While I do still enjoy a transformers that transformers once in awhile. They just mostly look boring and uninspired on a shelf or desk. Some stand out like ss86 Bumblebee Megatron or Cybertron Starscream but their Alt Modes were really compromised for it. In the end it I just have more fun with these. I'm sure when Hasbro gets to Transformers with all the articulation of these little guys I'll jump back in.

The tricky thing is the character's entire look is tied to him mostly being Ironhide.
It's like Dancouga. It's really just the mammoth robot with new feet and a head/backpack, but you can't really tweak it without changing the visuals. Silverbolt doens't have much to work with, best you can do it maybe trying to make Prowl more of the arms. I can almost see it working like the Zeo Megazord- but prowl would have to be much bigger

It's nice. I've been wanting to replace my original Scorponok for a long time, but I don't really like the idea of re-buying a figure I've (mostly) lost and the G1 and BW namesakes just don't feel the same, so it's nice to get a new iteration that somewhat resembles the Scorponok I grew up with. Extra points for having an actual robot mode, that was something that always bothered me with my old Scorponok.
That being said, I'd still like it of they made a SS 07 Scorponok, although I doubt they will. I might get the legends class figure some day.

That would be fair if it wasn't for the fact that youtube tells you which videos you have already watched so he could easily search for the legacy hot rod review and use the filters to find it. I concur on the Beast Combiners. Even if it means Haslab-in' them. Magnaboss could come with alt heads i.e: Toy accurate and G1-esque heads which tie them more solidly to the characters they were no doubt retconned to represent. Depends on how autistic you are about adding gimmicks to old toys, avoid it if you hated TR, if you liked the new play patrons on TR get him.

They removed the "tank" mode but made it a Powermaster, the small primal gets its own alt mode that can combine with the monke drone armor in 3 ways, a transmetal homage, ship mode and robot mode.

I saw it as getting 2 figures for the price of 1.

The articulation, size and size is nothing that couldn't be done at leader size. His articulation is most of what makes his made up alt modes work so there's not very deep engineering involved there. It's really down to posing him in ways to create a mode.

I'm just saying I don't think it's compromised by the robot mode; that's just what the alt mode is. I think it's a solid toy (arguably better than the recent Armada one) but I'm not as in love with it as a lot of people are precisely because I don't care that much for the alt mode. If they release a Skywarp or Thundercracker deco for it I might be tempted into double-dipping, though.

I'm not that anon, and I've never heard of that as a meme either, but to answer your question... when visiting somewhere I haven't been since I was a kid, YES, absolutely, 100% it feels like, "This used to be bigger." In fact, that's super common for a lot of people. An old elementary school. A relative's house I haven't visited since I was about seven or eight years old. Places like that. They definitely feel like they used to be bigger if you visit them as an adult after not having been there since childhood.

No. Where are you getting this idea from? At the time, most fans seemed to love it. It was praised at release for its cartoon accuracy (by the standards of the time, that is) and its heft from including die-cast metal (which seemed like a bigger deal back then), rubber tires, articulation, etc. There have been much better MP figures since then, but when it first came out, there had never been an Optimus Prime like it before. The American release got complaints for shortening the smokestacks to meet safety standards, and for adding some pointless battle damage paint apps, but overall it was loved at the time.

And where are you getting this idea that they "oversized it based on the childhood memory meme"? I was heavy in the fandom back then and don't recall people suggesting an explanation for its size. Yes, the G1 figure was much smaller, but that's beside the point, because MP-1 was just always meant to be a big, hefty figure, regardless of anything to do with misremembering stuff from childhood.

I only own Metalhawk, but I can vouch for him. Sure, maybe the specific plastic colors they used sorta drown out the molded details, and the gray doesn't do the weapons much good, but overall he's still a very well-engineered figure with a fun transformation, great articulation and accuracy, and still looks pretty cool.
Personally I'm trying to hoping to turn mine into an excuse to practice my model painting skills someday, maybe I can get him looking way nicer with some better silver and/or some paint wash or something. But I haven't looked deep into it at all, lol.

watching the tidal wave convention video really helped me understand why everything since kingdom has been sidegrades at best. they present TW under a context of excusing all their design decisions and compromises, like the base mode literally no-one asked for. they repeat a few times on how much they're 'delivering' with this figure, framing the entire presentation like justification for their continued employment
they heavily compromised commander ultra magnus, who should have been a slam dunk like rodimus, with the bullshit pull-apart joint system which again literally no-one asked for. if fucks up all the proportions and scale for the sake of justifying the price point, but ultimately makes the figure a shitter facsimile of the MP
more than anything right now the TF brand needs an actual cohesive vision and direction, which Warden brought when he took over and set up both the Prime Wars and Ware for Cybertron trilogies. 2016 through til 2022 was easily the best time in the history of the brand to be a collector or even just a casual figure enjoyer. hell, they still re-use molds from his era with the buzzworthy 4 packs.
i dislike using this term but TF basically needs a showrunner to keep everyone in their goldilocks zone instead of spread all over like legacy and studio series have been

You're still giving them too much credit. Rodimus was one of the early "x-class toy at y-class price" attempts to warm people up to the idea. Now that they've groomed their consumers to expect less plastic for more money, all bets are off. Ultra Magnus was "compromised" on purpose. They threw in a few stupid gimmicks to excuse the price point and borked the rest on purpose, because if they made a perfect Ultra Magnus, why the hell would anyone buy the marginally-improved, leader-sized-but-titan-priced version coming in 2026?

I think a lot of people will imagine a perfect ideal figure in their heads and then get insanely disappointed when the real figure that has to conform to things like the laws of physics and budget limitations doesn't live up to the imaginary. I know I'm guilty of it sometimes. We definitely have the occasional QC issue or baffling design decision but most figures are like, fine, and I'm getting tired of people acting like the world is ending every time a figure is revealed that has a single kinda questionable aspect to it.

It's even more insulting because they were basically nailing headsculpts during the Prime Wars era. I think the issue, like many things, stems from designers being told to make it look "accurate" instead of just being allowed to design a cool-looking head.

I feel like Hasbro needs to boot their entire design team and start over. Get a crew together and train them to make simple yet good Transforming robot toys. I feel like so many fundamentals have just been lost over the past several years, whether on purpose or otherwise.

That's really what we need more of. We need designers to be able to exercise fundamentals while being under severe limitations. I think one of the reasons people like Missing Link Convoy so much (apart from childhood wish fulfillment) is because it's ultimately a super-competent and extremely fun toy to play with.

NTA, but generally I prefer Bumblebee as a realistic beetle. Partly because the beetle is an iconic looking car, and partly because I like realistic alt modes on TFs. I don't hate penny racer/Choro-Q Bumblebee (I kinda want the Missing Link BB) but I prefer more authentic car modes. It is interesting how big the IRL bug is though; the VW Campervan actually uses the same chassis. In theory, you could use the V1 MP as a CHUG Bumblebee if you went off of vehicle scale.
That said, even aside from that, SS Bee's alt mode looks awful. It looks too angular, and the colours are horrible. And that's to say nothing of his robot mode with its colossal feet and shitty headsculpt.
I just hope the SS makes the Netflix mold come down in price. I like the mold but the prices are hell right now.

I can't see it happening, the Buzzworthy from the 1st Target four pack did nothing to budge the price and it was the better robot mode even with the cost of the alt not being a VW.

NGL, I actually really like that version of Bee, though I would have given him some racing stripes to differentiate him from Hubcap and make him a bit more visually interesting. His altmode is already "wrong" after all so they might as well lean into it.

I think it's more about the novelty for 1:64 diecast collectors. A Hot Wheels scaled diecast Optimus Prime in spectraflame paint that actually transforms is dope as fuck.

However, I've bought a number of those overpriced collectors hot wheels, and while 80 dollars is absurd, I might have actually paid it if Missing Link wasn't a thing, but I'm not a dedicated 1:64 collector. I think they know they're targeting a certain demographic of fanatics who will pay whatever they ask just to have a 1:64 spectraflame Optimus Prime to go along with their spectraflame Batmobile and spectraflame Ecto-1 or whatever.

It's nice to have a lower priced option, and It could serve as a sort of gateway for some to see if they'd like Missing Link but were hesitant, since its a lot easier to justify dropping $20 on a novelty. It also might be more of its own thing, taking cues from the G1 toy while altering some things so it won't be a direct competitor with Missing Link OP. Either way I'm just happy to see more yellow eyes OP

Yes. The shoulders are supposed to be further back. he's the same mold as both the Siege and Wreck N' Rule toy (save for some minor cosmetic differences), so the transformation scheme is identical.

If it's anything like its mold mate Barricade, he'll be a big lad that's a bit shitty in regards to articulation, though the things that limited it are different here so he might be a bit better. The feet are miles better, To get Barricade to stand decently you had to hunch him.

I like it more than the one they did with the Cliffjumper mold. The roof of the car isn't as round as I would have liked and looks a little off in both modes because of it, but it still looks okay. I don't have a good Bumblebee other than the WFC one from 2010, so this is an easy buy for me unless there are build quality issues. Not an exciting reveal though. It could have been stronger.
