Their budget likely isn't higher than the other lines, it just goes further because of no licensing fees being worked into the margins. Tooling costs are still the same and if it's not necessary then they would probably rather use that money to do something more worthwhile.

Feels a little pedantic, no license fees literally equates to a bigger budget, no? It isn't necessary but it would help the retro feel of the figure. And we couldn't even get the correct weapons for Snow Serpent, and the Eel is practically identical to the Amazon release, so where did the budget go?

The Kickstarter version of the compendiums WON'T have anything except the core 155 issues. No Annual/Yearbook or Special Missions.

The only real difference between the Kickstarter and retail editions of the Compendiums is that the Kickstarter version will be hardcover and the retail versons softcovers ala the Walking Dead compendiums. Kirkman's said nothing about the Yearbooks (which resolve key plotlines) and Special Missions, which crossed over and were referenced but mostly were self-contained.

Also not mentioned are the comics that were packed in with the 25th Anniversary line's two-packs which were written by Hama and varied between generic evergreen stories and "lost tales" like how the Crimson Twins got recruited to Cobra, how Storm Shadow kidnapped Scarlet for Silent Interlude, and the origin of Doctor Mindbender. Several of which were written by Hama himself and which he considers canon to the Marvel series.

As it stands, the Compendiums (retail and Kickstarter) are basically cash grabs to get as much as they can out of nerds out the gate, since smaller trades and those with the missing content are probably going to happen eventually but they intend to force everyone to buy the compendiums first then double dip/triple dip. Also, I would not be shocked if they will try and time shit so that the Kickstarter HCs come out BEFORE v2 of the SC retail version of the Compendium comes out for added pressure to get people to do the Kickstarter, on the grounds that the Kickstarter folk will get the full series before those waiting for the softcover trades do.

I don't see the problem with offering spin offs seperate from the main series. It's how comic collections have usually worked for the past 50 years.
Omnibuses are already thick enough and it's easier to keep track of spin offs seperately.

I have more of a problem with how modern omnibuses are, since they include crossovers, some of which i already own. So something like Uncanny XMen, where it was cost prohibitive for me to have collected to buy the older stuff, has a ton of filler of shit that was already released like the Longshot or Magik miniseries.... which i already got in other collections. All i wanted was Uncanny XMen stuff, because the older stuff was never really reprinted outside of the overpriced Masterworks that take forever, which are also full of filler.

In short, if they're going to do collections for older Special Missions+others, who cares if it's seperate. As long as new editions are being made, that's all that matters. Let people decide if they want the side shit, which is how it was originally created in the first place.

Im fine with extra gear options, just get stressed out by the thought of losing a clip or attachment. I just cant focus enough to bag em all up nice and neat, my toys are in a bit of disarray and its a bad look.

hey guys, is there a way to fix vintage torsos that won't screw back together without gluing it?

i had to replace the o-ring on my 86 sgt. slaughter and the screw tread was caked in plastic as i took it out. seems the plastic disintegrated on its own, since this was in storage, out of sunlight, at normal temperatures, and had never been taken apart before.

i don't want to glue the torso back together, since i may have to replace the o-ring again and then i won't be able to take it apart.

any advice?

Clutch arrived in the mail today!

Something I don't think ANYONE has mentioned since he started showing up in peoples hands; the Steel Brigade helmet is an actual freaking helmet, not an alternate head. So people who were wanting to army build Clutch are SOL on that regard it seems.

He's a really good figure and I really love the head sculpt. Tattoos are trash but I can live with them.

Now, I have to ask; is the Vamp worth tracking down by itself? I really don't have room for vehicles and shit but I was surprised enough with Clutch to wonder if I should try and track down a loose Vamp for him.

It helps that they don't outsource as bad as the others, TF stuff goes between Hasbro and Takara which means a lot of eyes in between catch stuff. Joe is a small Hasbro team that works with themselves so it's possible shots and promos don't even leave a computer at the work office that they share around.

Im not complaining really, just seemed like the thought here was completing the dreadnoks with or without the thunder machine. Im ok with the idea of a thundermachine haslab with trasher and other possible dreadnoks, but others may just want to complete the gang as solo figures.

I just want to be able to get Thrasher and Wild Weasel in their classic 80s looks without them being paywalled behind expensive Haslab projects I can't afford and don't really have room for either. If they released Thrasher and the Thunder Machine for about the same price as Clutch and the VAMP I could manage that if I cut back on other figures, but I just can't justify spending hundreds on a toy plane, no matter how awesome it is.

Yes and not. While IDW did collect the series, they didn't collect the year books or order of battle guidebooks and had special mission as it's own trade. And they cheaped the fuck out using old Jason Scott Cambell cover art, first the old covers he did when Marvel reprinted 1-50 in five volumes (which had multiple production errors fixed in the IDW reprints) but then further cheaped out by using the covers from the first 5-6 issues of the Devils Due comic's covers (done by Campbell) for volumes 6-10, even though the Devil's Due covers had nothing to do with the contents of trades they were recycled from and in some cases had massive continuity errors (such as a cover with Storm Shadow as a villain attacking Snake Eyes for a volume that had Storm Shadow as a good guy and a cover with Alexander, Destro's bastard black son for the trade with the Cobra Civil War arc). It wasn't until V11 that they started creating new artwork for the trades.

The lazy cover artwork plus double dipping issues with Marvel having already published the first five trades years early, and the fact that the trades (which started at $25 a piece and kept going up in price), made a lot of people sleep on actually buying them and as such, a lot of the IDW trades after v5 quickly went out of print and were going for $100+ a volume.

And i thought they did collect the Year Books? Was the trade unfinished? I have mine, but never really read it. I didn't like people going through my individual issues, so i bought the trades as reading copies that i could lend out.

I hope Image does a trades for the IDW Hama comics, as my own collection is pretty spotty both in singles and trades. Not buynig their KS trades, as i already own the original series almost three times over (IDW trades, my own complete marvel singles, and my younger brother's partial collection). I even have the first IDW hardcover, because hardcovers are cool, but oof, they take up space and i quickly killed the idea of owning it that way too.

It's fine most of the time, BBTS saves my wallet shipping the Pile of Loot and everything arrives well protected. Amazon brings the line too, but they treat packages like garbage so I don't buy there as often.
The real problem comes with exclusives. I have a few dealers who brought me the VAMP, a few Night Force and the first Retro guys, but the Target stuff is just a chore I'm not dealing with.

Sure, there's new fans coming into the property, but it's nowhere close to being like any current franchise out there. The GI Joe property has had a large chunk of it's fanbase being old fans since the fourth reboot in the early 00s.
Image's sales/demand for GI Joe comics almost all comes from former fans who grew bored of the property and established fans who missed out on IDW's stuff. The Image relaunch has been the biggest marketing push we've seen since the Cobra Civil War comics in 2011.

Hasbro has been keeping GI Joe Classified on life support for so long because something is constantly on the horizon. First the Snake Eyes movie, then these new comics, and now the next upcoming movie/tie-in.
Corporations like Hasbro work on infinite growth year after year, but it's cheaper to put up with flat sales, where retailer support is still there, than canceling the line and hoping retailers support the next reboot.
If GI Joe fails again, and no new fans come into the fanbase, Hasbro will likely put the franchise into retirement again.

If the doors and roof is removable allowing the Stinger to revert back to the VAMP and allow room to fit figures in easily then it would be a nice cop. If anything, that Snake Eyes movie almost single-handedly caused the line to collapse. The figures from that movie are probably the weakest, and least liked toys from the entire line. They literally can't GIVE those things away.

That's not necessarily true, though. The Retaliation line was pretty weak, and while the Rise of Cobra line wasn't great, the Pursuit of Cobra line was meant to specifically be a sequel/follow up line to RoC and PoC is pretty widely regarded as the best of the modern era 3.75 lines.

I don't think you understand the scale of the shit they actually sell.
A normal toyline sells in the mid-100,000s to millions of units per wave. These are the numbers companies like Hasbro are getting at minimum or it isn't worth their time.
The exception are marketing products, like limited editions you see at places like Comic Con, which coincidently, are sold to around 10k people.

As for selling out, that's not much of a feat if stores aren't ordering them in great numbers. We're far away from the amount of pegs GI Joes used to take up in stores in the 2010s, 2000s, 1990s, and 1980s. The amount of pegs shows how much stores expect to sell, which is also the amount of products they're going to be ordering. Having 2 or 4 pegs is pretty bad compared to how much presence the line used to have and compared to anything else Hasbro sells. IT's way under how much product they had up when the Classified line launched (along with the 1:18 figures) and when the Snake Eyes movie was coming out, which is what normal lines should be selling.
The amount of characters they even make just shows how low expectations are. And how many of them are just redecos?

Fucking this. There is a dedicated fan base to this brand but it's not growing. It's not getting bigger, might even be shrinking at least in sales. The Techno Viper/Quick kick wave and really the last 3 wave are still wildly available online, there not that hard to get and we haven't seen anything intense short of pulse exclusives which is more telling how limited they are.

Nevermind the fact that you thought their HasLab stuff is something popular, when the fact is their store kickstarters are because stores don't want to sell so few numbers. Yes, that is still too few numbers, because there's thousands of stores per retailer and they need to sell 5-10x that number to make a profit. Again, that's tens of thousands of people, when stores are aiming to sell MID hundreds of thousands to millions of sales.
Go look at McFarlane in how they needed to use their Kickstarter to show that their Spawn line can sell in stores still, but they're sold in the collectors section, which are MID-tens of thousands of sales.

Getting the same amount of space as collector lines that sell in the mid-10ks isn't good for a giant company like Hasbro that expect growth every year.
GI Joe retracted from their relaunch of the GI Joe line, where they killed the 1:18 line after a single year and retracted AGAIN once the Snake Eyes movie failed. Selling 2x less for two years in a row, when they didn't have much space to begin with, is life support. They're taking up the same amount of space as collector lines by 100x smaller companies.

And just so you know, i own a couple thousand GI Joes. The bulk of which i bought during the 25th/30th/Retalation/Rise era, so i remember when the GI Joe line was actually popular (technically 3 eras: 80s, 90s, and 00s). I remember in not-so-great-years, during the lulls inbetween the live action movies, they produced half as many figures in a single year as Classified released in its lifetime. And they were producing NEW figures, not just straight up redecos like many Classified releases.
So even if the line [i:lit]was[/i:lit] selling like a normal line, Hasbro still isn't giving it even a third of the budget.

Again, i said the line is selfsustaining, which points toward how proud i am that there's so many dedicated fan who support GI Joe.
But is Hasbro fine with no new blood entering the fanbase? Which i need to remind you that Hasbro is a giant conglomerate. They expect growth year after year, but they're fine with a lull, because they have another movie coming out and canceling lines inbetween lulls isn't good with retailers.
Why? Because that space GI Joe is currently taking would be replaced with ANOTHER toy company's products. If that product sells well, that means there's less shelf space (if any) when the next movie hits. Yes, Hasbro is cockblocking other companies by dropping their normal expectations of how much a toyline needs to sell, because this is how businesses work.

IF that next movie doesn't bring in that growth every single public company expects, they're going to put it into retirement, just like they did before when sales didn't meet expectations in the 90s and 10s.

This is the fact of economics and the business world. Any smaller company would be happy with these sales, but not companies who sell billions of dollars worth of products every quarter.

Being in the US, I always look to online to get a good indicator of a brands health because in store can mean shit if your area either over orders and/or over orders shit, where as online is many vendors all giving a clearer sign of stocks actual demand. While I don't think the line is on life support it's clear that at best it's going to be more like Super7 offerings where they make the product, sell it online and do more runs if demand is there. B.A.T is a very popular figure and sold out online when his offerings were made in 2021 and early 2022 and yet he stayed msrp for 3 years going into stock over and over again to where online now is the price starting to tick up again at many places but is still available on the cheap. I wager most of you never saw him in store but he was never hard to find on a sale or discount in these 3+ years. What I'm getting at in that example is that the line isn't on life support but it's not a super hot item either. It's boomer popular and making what sales it can and I think it'll lose steam into next year and be full retried by 2026 due to most getting all the ones they want and no new blood attracted because that's is always what kills the joe brand.

You can point to the 1970s-80s with Superman and Batman films as precursors, but the obvious tipping point into mainstream acceptance came with the MCU. Prior to that, talking about super heros as an adult was a fast track to being social ostracized. The same is true today with toy collecting, but that is rapidly changing. There are many indicators that adult toy collecting is not embraced by the masses, but you're free to think otherwise. COVID did greatly accelerate the process, as it did with many things, culturally and otherwise.

Also, one thing I didn't mention is that toy collecting is far more accepted among women than men. Somebody mentioned Barbie, which is a good example, but Squishmallows is an even better one. Those have truly broken into the mainstream in a way that "boys toys" never have. All we're waiting for now is a toy that crosses all age and gender boundaries, like a fidget spinner but with slightly more adult appeal.

Hence comparing the shelf space and what characters Hasbro is producing. hasbro's output is immensely the smallest it's ever been for GI Joe and retailers are giving it the same amount of support as other dead lines (Overwatch, Fortnite, etc). Only difference is that GI Joe isn't actually dead, hence not being put on clearance (as fast) and entire waves going directly to outlets.
Again, the line is self sustaining, without needing media and fresh blood to push sales.

It's called a press check. He's checking to make sure there's still a round in the chamber. Fun fact, the reload and press check he does in the scene from your image is a brand new technique that Keanu Reeves invented on set. The reload technique is so fast and effective that competition shooters have started doing it in competitions to shave time off their records. Keanu literally invented a new and incredibly effective reloading technique on the set of those films. It's pretty neat.

Welcome man, it's a great franchise, and yeah, Classified is definitely up there as probably the coolest looking toys right now. There are a few missteps in the line just like every toy line ever, but overall I'd say it rates at an 8 or 9 out of 10.
And for your question on the little ones: The little figures are the original 3 3/4 inch line from the 80s to mid 90s, that line ended long ago, but it's the main inspiration for the current Classfied line. There are a few figures in that scale here and there, but mostly it seems Hasbro wants to leave them behind.
And no, we don't hate each other, most of us collect both. There's also the 4 inch line with a bit more detail than the 3 3/4 one, but mostly weird articulation and proportions, still cool tho.

I don't think there's any hate between the scales, but a lot of us certainly wish that 1:18 was the dominant scale.

And those are 3.75" Joes, or ARAH/vintage Joes. There's the Gi Joe Vs Cobra Joes from the 00s. Then there's the modern 1:18 gI Joe line from the mid-00s til late 10s, which are also called by their subline names of 25th,35th,50th, PoC, Renegades, etc.

And as i said above, i only collect my favorites for Classified line. So I have a gigantic collection of 5 6" figures from Hasbro.
I also collect Mezco's GI Joes and so far i have 3 from them.
As for 1:18 lines, ARAH: around 300. GvC: also around 300. modern 1:18: over a thousand. Army building can get out of hand and they released about 40-100 figures every year of each previous era. Modern era falls short.

I don't care about the recipe, I care about how it looks. The textures and armor plating does not evoke the retro aesthetic. Also, the Spirit rifle isn't accurate to the one from the original figure, and the laser rifle from the Valkyrie set is undersized for male figures. If the blue matches the existing troopers it'll be a nice addition to them i guess, but I was expecting slightly more effort put in. This is like if they released the wave 1 Scarlett with a flat blue and tan paint job over the armor like all those shitty customs you'd see instead of doing a new mold

I don't mind the mold, it works for the mainline, but this is the retro line. Duke and Scarlett got brand new molds. Gung-Ho got a fair share of new parts. Beach Head reused an appropriate body and got a new vest. Why can't the Trooper get to use a decent set of preexisting parts? Even just using Scrap Iron with an Officer head would've been fine.

Wrong. Cobra trooper came with the dragunov. Not any of those guns. There's a lot more wrong with it than just that. Why not use stalker's torso to get an actual blue shirt retro trooper? The fact that most of its gear (pistol, knife, holsters, webgear) is from stalker is extra insulting. Especially the webgear since it has a sculpted in knife which they once said they'd never do in the classified line. That shitty mould is worn out as fuck. All the PP troopers had leg issues of some kind. Plus they're using the trooper helmet and the officer head so those won't actually fit together just like what happened with the PP one.

Not much more to it really. Keanu is very good with firearms. When they did his initial training for the first John Wick he took quite quickly to it and ended up participating in three gun competitions and did quite well. Instructors have stated he's the most competent actor in Hollywood when it comes to handling firearms. The reload technique in question he started doing on the set of the second film. He just kind of felt it out and came up with the reload on his own. People started mimicing it after the film came out because it looked cool and learned that, when performed correctly and quickly, was faster than most conventional techniques currently used. Competition shooters then started to use it in competitions.

Classified is probably the best western toyline coming out right now. Very few figures are actually "bad" and most of em are just straight up fantastic. I don't really know what to recommend since I don't know what you have on order already but personally being a huge fan of the "Squad-in-a-box" sets, I would at least have to recommend the H.I.S.S. Fire Team. You get three great figures in matching colors with tons of accessories and blast effects. Even without the Tank it's a fantastic crew of Cobra troops.

So I don't normally care about "Retro accuracy" or anything like that, and I personally plan to grab at least one of those troopers, if not more. But I completely agree and understand with the complaints you're making. This guy is just a stripped down classified Trooper and there really isn't much "Retro" about it. They could have found a much better way to make the "Dude in pajamas" trooper the originals were, even just using the Officer build would've been better.

As a toy and someone looking to army build more troops, I don't have a problem with this figure. But as a long time Joe collector, I completely sympathize with those who had hopes this Retro Trooper would be a more classic looking design.
