They're organic aliens, and their 'skin' is as soft and elastic as actual human skin despite its artificial appearance (it's presumably some kind of carapace). Even their clothes, which look boxy and metallic, are actually stretchy and flexible (referred to as 'Solid Wear'). They do, however, have crystalline hearts instead of normal organic ones.
The actual robots are the Motoroids, which were designed as giant warmecha called 'Motorwalkers' for fighting against the Polynians during the initial war; they were guided by AI, and eventually became self-aware. After the war, humans were able to create synthetic versions of a Polynian's crystal heart, and were able to upload the Motorwalker's AIs into them, giving them souls; many of these AI would downgrade to a humanoid body - a Motoroid - based off of the appearances of Polynians to pursue other jobs now that the war was over. they mostly do Civil Service stuff (firemen, police, EMTs, etc.). Motoroids cannot reproduce, but since their bodies are based off of Polynians, they presumably do possess the anatomy for sex even if nothing will come of it.
