This is just a pet theory of mine, but I always assumed the original boxes inspired the fingerbox scene in the original Dune novel and movie. Did the Dune remake seriously just revive fingerbox toys? Crazy how that works.

Man, I haven't seen one of these in a while. I remember finding an old USSR style one in our old house. It still had the little rubber and everything. It's probably still around somehwhere, I might look for it to relive my childhood for a bit.

Never really tried the newer models though. They seem absolutely soulless in comparison.

There was a guy selling these at a pop up market here in my city a few years ago. I came back around to his table after browsing some other stuff because I wanted to get one but he was packing them away. Said someone made a complaint to the people running the market and turns out our city council banned the sell of them years ago because of some shit that was happening in schools with them. I never know about that but I wasn't surprised though I was pretty bummed but he said he'd sell me one privately but never responded to my messages.

possibly, but i don't mind the electronic ones. they're different in a way you just can't get with traditional boxes. that said, the opposite is also true; electronic boxes can't replicate traditional boxes. i see them as complimentary. that said, i don't know if the traditional fingerbox market would have survived if the electronic type was never made. it was already dwindling in popularity.
