Started to build Deathscythe today, I have finished the head, body and both arms. I have to say it is the least fun I had yet. Stickers are very small and annoying and not the black parts turn gray-whiteish sometimes when I remove the knobs.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the kit and will likely order more from the same maker in the future.
That said, the assembly instructions are very basic and the color guide is non-existent, so reference pictures are not optional and a paint guide from a 1/35 kit off HS is very helpful.

Also, using masking fluid as a temporary glue to glue parts together, then prime/paint and then pull apart to install tracks (and then glue back again with CA cement) saved a lot of time.

Bought this specifically for painting Ukrainian military hardware.
Well, some part of the money went to help Ukraine and I got a nice souvenir piece to show for it, but the airbrush itself as a tool is not very impressive.

The good:
>0.15mm needle/nozzle (sold separately) produces finer lines than 0.18mm (not suprpisingly) and when the trigger is pulled all the way back the spray is wider than Custom Micron's
>the endpiece mechanism that allows to fully release the trigger while remembering the last setting (so it can be quickly set back) is pretty convenient when cleaning
>nozzle construction is similar to Iwata Eclipse (in that you can take the nozzle out easily for cleaning)
>quick connect adapter is included and it's compatible with Iwata's

The bad:
>trigger range of motion is about 30% smaller than Iwata's which makes fine control harder
>trigger is not as smooth as Iwata's even with plenty of lubrication
>the two-pronged nozzle cap that comes standard with Infinity is poorly designed: when the trigger is all the way back the prongs are inside the spray cone which causes the droplets to form on them (which then drip down or fly off creating a mess in either case)
>some sort of notches with numbers on the endpiece would've REALLY helped (standard Infinity has them, it's just the special edition that doesn't)
>the box is the cheapest, jankiest, flimsiest excuse for an airbrush case I have ever seen, and to add insult to injury the top insert doesn't match the bottom (positions of large and small cups are switched), ffs I've seen better boxes with a $30 noname airbrushes off Aliexpress, come on Iwata, do something about this shit

All in all it's an okay airbrush once you get used to it, but I would not recommend it over any Iwata (except maybe Neo or Revolution).

I have a lot of GMs. I like GMs. I like them because, for the most part, they have that generic robot look to them that fits well with a lot of other stuff. Gundams all have that specific face style that instantly gives them away as Gundam brand robots, and I feel the same way about most zeon models as well. Some Zaku can have a more generic look, but the design of the head is so iconic it's hard to pretend its anything else.

I did some quick math and this would be doable on the Mega Size Gundam (or even one slightly smaller). But Bandai never has tried this to my knowledge, as the only really big kits they've made are either ancient or simple.

They did make that Micro Wars series though, which had chibi gundams and articulated Diaclone-like pilots.

Modern Daiaclone is all 1/60th scale, so it actually scales with perfect grade gundam kits. And some perfect grade kits have a little pilot figure, but its usually just a very basic shape to just imply the detail. Luckily, if you need some little dudes to pose around your perfect grades, you can buy packs of just Dianaughts from any site that has Diaclone stuff.

I'm not surprised. I got some of those Rihio pilots along with a mech I ordered, and I can't even be bothered to assemble them (I quit after 1). The parts are so tiny that cleaning nubs is extremely unpleasant, and if I ever lose my grip on a part it shoots off into nowhere, lost instantly.

I think I recall seeing people do 30 minute building challenges with these on YT, but I'd actually like to see someone do a really good job with cleaning the nubs decently in under 30 minutes. I still have a really hard time cleaning up nubs with sanding, so usually I'll just use my nail to clean it as best I can, with sanding if it's really necessary (though I don't always like the resultant finish).

they could just rebrand 30mm as "30 millimeter pegs" when the kits become too complicated to build in 30 minutes. just like how RG removed the "1/144" on the logo to give them more space to cheat with proportions as a compromise with the ever-complicating engineering on the models.

there's a section in the instructions that has a diagram of all the runners, the parts not used will have an X over them
you'll almost always have leftover polycaps cause it's one of the most generic runners

I love it and need more. In particular I'm waiting for Omegamon Alter-S.
Some stuff on the Amplified line is silly, like the flaming shield for Dukemon, but others like Machinedramon are better than the normal design.

Just check what they have, whether it's Tamiya Mark Fit, Mr. Mark Setter/Softer, Micro-Set/Sol, Vallejo Decal Fix/Softener or Revell Decal Soft, any decal solution will make your life a lot easier. They all do about the same thing.

I'm shocked that they haven't, actually. I have the Amplified and love it, except for the cape. It's alright, but the normal one just has a sort of majesty to it.

These kits have the same feel as RGs to me. In the sense that they usually won't cheap out on details, and will try to go the extra mile. They didn't have to make all those little lenses and clear bits. They could have made those stickers. But they didn't. I like that a lot.

Do you guys hold onto a portion of your used runners? I've seen people repurpose them, like melting them down for putty but I'd rather not drown in more plastic than necessary on the off chance I could get more value out of a kit and use a specific colour runner for a repair instead of brand putty or pla-plate.

I held on to runners for years and did the sprue goo thing once. It was difficult to work with, and the result after lots of work was just ok. I threw out all my runners after that. Not worth it. My place is small, don't want to keep unnecessary junk.

The only valid case for keeping runners is when you have a part that you know you're not going to paint (like a flesh-colored parts of a girl kit) and that you might need to repair with a color-matching plastic, but even that is only till the build is finished. Once you're done, to the recycle bin they go.

They're still fine. Capillary is just lazier. But you also need to be careful not to use it on already assembled parts, it can pool between pieces and make the plastic brittle. In that sense markers are more idiot-proof

Whats your process for building gunpla? I've been doing pretty simple builds and just focusing on nub removal, stock stickers, and using panel lining markers. I just picked up an airbrush, a slew of acrylic paints, liquid panel liner, and some semi gloss top coat. I dont know what order to do everything in.

Depends on what type of paint you use. Definitely needed for enamels. Can get away with spraying acrylic and lacquer paints straight on plastic, but may have some issues like peeling or such. Also helps to even out the color when you are changing from the original. I find primer to help give a nice even smooth coat, especially with metallics.

This is a little more nuanced. The Candy Toys are manufactured in China, that's why the production/labor costs were more pronounced compared to Japan. Additionally Bandai does this thing where R&D employees will go to different divisions, so we started seeing all these kind of model kit items from the Candy division from people that were previously part of the Hobby dept, but a lot of them were operating like they were still part of the Hobby division so they had features that would work well at a higher price point that had a very slim margin potential at the much lower Candy Toy price point.

HG kits look absolutely terrible without paint since a lot of the parts are molded in the wrong color to cut costs. RG and the 1/100 scale series and higher don't have that problem and look fine out of the box, but in dedicated modeling communities you'll still get made fun of for not going beyond the bare minimum.

Do you know anything about gunpla? This is basically a straight up lie in 2024. Sure, if you go out of your way to seek out old and outdated kits maybe, but mostly all modern HGs are designed to look good right out of the box, and color separation and engineering have only improved as time went on. Even modern sticker-heavy kits, like the new SEED stuff, has way nicer stickers than the old days, they actually stay in place and look fairly good.

This is a HG from 2019 and it has virtually no stickers. Mostly everything (barring small details) is molded in the correct color. Painting HGs certainly hasn't been "mandatory" for years. Bandai does still cut corners sometimes when something would obviously be too pricey or complex, but they typically try for the best color separation they can. So no. Painting is absolutely not necessary in most cases. Check for original release dates on kits before buying, and know that generally older ones will not look as good out of the box.

Thank you kind sir, I learned new things working on it so I'm still happy how it turned out.
I went to the semi local scale model store today to maybe get a wing gundam, wich was the first gunpla I build some way to long ago, or a zaku but they did not have a lot of stock so I got a guntank for my next kit. Buddy who got me the EG said he has a guncannon somewere I can have when I'm done with the guntank, maybe not very original but that will look cool together on my shelf.
I'll be looking into seamfilling bc the guntank has them running all over the cannons and some other ugly places. I know it's an older kit and not the most complicated but for €10,- it's some impressive plastic moulding.

Anyone here build that set? Would you say it's beginner friendly? It does look really cool but I'm a bit hesitant because it's significantly more expansive than the others I build yet and I'm worried about all the stickers. I mostly tend to screw them up especially the ones for the eyes always end up slightly too high or too low.

"Significantly more expensive?" It's $26 shipped on Amazon, what have you been building? BB Senshi from 1993? Also, stickers are easy, get a good pair of tweezers and you won't have trouble again. It's trying to place them with clumsy human fingers that's the problem.

And yeah, Calibarn is a great beginner's kit. Go buy it.

I got myself a nice prismatic decals from Delpi, problem is when I use finishing mat varnish all that prismatic effect disappears. Is there a way to make decals still show holografic effect and have a model in flat? The only thing I can came up with is just glossy finishing varnish, but I would really prefer flat/mat.

probably only with a clear glossy coat you will keep the effect, I too once got some prismatic decals from delpi for the HG Xi because the normal version was sold out and after I used the flat topcoat, ther was not a single trace of the prismatic effect on them

Impossible. Matte coat is covering it in tiny particles that roughen the surface and break up bounced light. It's the enemy of decals like this which rely on reflected light reaching them, and then being able to bounce away.

How about glossy varnish over decals, and then masking them and flat coat? but i think it would look a bit jarring in the transition between flat and glossy on the edges of decals. Or maybe wipe flat varnish from them... damn lots of experimentation ahead.

That's normal. You're essentially micro-scratching the shit out of it, which makes it matte. Sanding means you basically have to paint or topcoat. Or just put in more work. Do more grits, spend more time sanding. It's a pain in the fucking ass just to restore the plastic back to "stock" looks.

Or just quit sanding. I don't do it anymore. I just nip with godhands, then use a hobby knife to take care of any remaining nub. Rub/burnish with your fingernail to make the rest of the mark disappear. Done.

Sanding can technically provide more consistent and "professional" results, but yeah it requires more work and aftercare and isn't something I usually recommend to people who are starting out or just snapping together kits.

The posability of virtually every kit can rarely match what is possible in promo/cover art or in the animated works. Even something as iconic as the RX-78-2 cutting the Zaku in half in the first episode of 0079, you can't get that kind of motion range in the RG (I've tried) because the armor plates will get in the way. You can get close if you fudge some of it, but we're still far from the days where a mecha can mimic the entire human range of movement like an Ingram.

Lucky you, I haven't seen any Busters at the two that are within tolerable driving distance of my house, just Blitz and Duel (Strike RM showed up a few times a few months ago but disappeared really fast). Supposedly some of them also have Aegis but I haven't seen hide nor hair of those.

Is the digimon figure rise line just not selling? Went from 7 releases in 2021 (or 6 if we’re not counting recolors) to 2 in 2024. Looking like getting Piedmon, MagnaAngemon, Angewomon, and other Adventure 01 protagonist Ultimates are becoming more and more unlikely.

It's not difficult or finnicky, but it has many points of articulation and little gimmicks that took me a while. I hadn't built an rg since the mkii like a decade ago, so I forgot how much there was to them. I did just a little at a time while working on other kits, so it probably wouldn't take as long for most people. It's very cool, if you like Eva I'd recommend it. The level of detail is kind of insane, there's clear red runner just for the core, which ends up completely covered in the end.

Trying customizing for the first time, I am in the planning stage using GN-Archer and a 30MS torso, how would I achieve these proportions?

The arms I guess I would cut and lengthen with pla-plates but I don't know how to connect the legs like the second image.
Also I'm afraid the legs won't have much articulation if I connect them like this.

something like this? idk how the hip/leg connection normally goes on GN-Archer but this just has the bottom connector part of that fused to 30ms leg part, it connects like normal on both sides and allso fully functional in this case and also give some extra height. arms I have no idea
