The Uni is a very competent "modern" tama with all the bells and whistles - color screen, fluid animations, rechargeable battery, and internet connectivity providing routine updates with new content and items in addition to paid DLC (which will inevitably stop working once servers shut down in a couple of years, at which point many of the uni's features will be lost to time).
The Connection is a very competent recreation of an 00s-era tama. For this one they chose to combine the Western V3 and Japanese Keitai, which were the most feature-packed "traditional" versions, before they started adding version-specific things like stat points and school/jobs. Less things to do compared to the uni, growth conditions involve some RNG and require more active effort. No internet/PC connectivity, though it does support passwords for items which Bandai haven't distributed yet. Characters evolve into wrinkly seniors a few days after becoming adults, so you have to marry them off relatively quickly or get punished for it (seniors can only marry from connecting to another tama, otherwise you have to kill them to get a new tama)
Gameplay-wise, the Uni is more forgiving with simple deterministic logic for evolving into a specific character, and is lower maintenance in general. The Connection has different points of appeal.
Personally I work full time and appreciate how modern color tamas have gone more casual, but I still feel nostalgia for the connection era and intend to get one once there's a shell design I like
