Got another arc sketched out in my head, between work, weather and waiting on a key element of the plot I'm not sure what the principle photography timeline's going to be. Much of it will be shot indoors but can't proceed without said key element.

A short distance from the tanks an NCO checks in on the soldiers manning an antitank gun overlooking a track through the wilderness of No Man's Land. Without exception the cowboys and indians sets I've seen over the years would always have a mix of colors for both sides; first time ever seeing monochrome options, especially with both sides in the same color. I imagine it saves on costs to do it this way, can still create your own blend by getting all the colors. The poses are classic, can't remember off-hand who originated them but they're recognizable and seem to be fairly good copies. Just noticed there's a random green soldier mixed in with the blue bag; reminds me of an awesome dollar store across town that had a wall's worth of cowboys and indians packages and many of them had a few WW2 British soldiers mixed in randomly, bought every package I could find with them and had a nice little unit of Brits alongside a wagon train's worth of conestogas and the wild west figures to match.

Found that toysoldiersdepot was selling those same Brits in bulk some time after, bought enough for good-sized army and folded the randoms in with them (I think, been a while and need to pull them out to confirm, might've marked the randoms to keep them distinct). They're somewhat modified from the Airfix originals they're based on (WW2 8th Army), with the crawling Bren guy absent entirely and the charging riflemen changed a bit and most of his bayonet missing. Most interestingly the soldier with the Thompson has had his gun modified to a more war-accurate version; in the original set he's got an older model with the foregrip, while not implausible it wasn't as widely used.

Wild West sets are highly underrated. While I see WWII-style soldiers here, Civil War and Indian War sets fall by the wayside. Of course, that's just a personal bias coming from someone who would regularly play with said sets while watching westerns on TV growing up.

My brother was more into the cowboys and indians but we'd often have massive conflicts involving all our toys and they served well alongside more conventional armies. He gave me his collection and I'm thinking there will be some wild west action in the near future, alongside or after the current episode of the color wars. A medieval episode will also happen at some point.

Without warning a tremendous explosion rocks the base, blasting apart the ruined building where moments before a tired gun crew was attending their heavy artillery. An entire wall section is torn from the rest and crashes down on the soldiers manning the sandbags nearby, but the chaos is only getting started...

At the right side of the base one of the tanks detonates with its turret launching into the air, bowling over a passing guard and shattering his bones before coming to rest hard on the ground in front of its now-blazing hull. As suddenly as the detonations began the silence of morning twilight descends on the outpost again, though the crackle of flames, the staccato of small arms rounds cooking off and the groans of injured infantry filter through as the ringing in survivors' ears starts to fade.

As the stunned garrison tries to pull itself together, a short distance away the night is ending for another troop of Greens. Their patrol through the blackness of No Man's Land was interrupted by a tank breakdown and when they finally got underway again it was discovered the tank's exhaust mufflers had failed. Rather than send the noisy tank back to base on its own the patrol captain aborted the mission, with too much time lost by the breakdown as it was.

With his noisy column inching closer to their final destination, the captain senses all is not as it should be. He confirms with his LT that they are right where they should be, but a few minutes from the defensive lines. His unease only grows; there should've been some kind of challenge from the garrison by now, whether a warning shot, a radio call or even a shouted challenge. The two men peer intently towards where the outer edges of the compound should be, the slowly growing light of the predawn playing tricks with their eyes... Was that the flicker of large flames? Were those dancing points of strobe-light fireflies, or muzzle flashes?

At the head of the column the point men catch a glimpse of sandbag walls through the darkness and foliage, home sweet home. A warm glow seems to rise from just behind the sandbags; one trooper quips to the other that someone on guard duty lit hisself a very against the regs drum fire to stay warm. Suspecting this same fool likely fell asleep by his illicit heat source the soldier calls out the night's challenge loudly, hoping to rouse the rascal and get the gate opened for the column. At that very moment the tank's troubled engine starts to over-rev, ramping up its already considerable noise even higher.

A few meters away at the sandbag wall, the lone surviving soldier guarding the right flank cowers, still shook up over the sudden explosions and the tank just a short distance behind him detonating, its funeral pyre still raging. The unmistakable sound of a tank engine drawing nearer snaps him out of his shock. He aims his rifle down into the darkness of No Man's Land and shouts the night's challenge. No reply comes, but the tank suddenly grows much louder - they're charging right at him! Without hesitation the soldier opens fire on the approaching shadowy figures he can barely make out in the gloom, screaming into his squad comm mic "Tan raid! Tan raid! We're under attack!"

The erratic rifle fire somehow manages to find targets and two of the patrol are felled within moments, the rest diving for cover or sheltering behind their tanks. The captain and LT assess the new developments:

At the centre and left of the base the garrison rallies and pours towards the forward defenses. Radio calls go out requesting any and all support to repel the attack. A lone IFV advances to cover the left, the only heavy firepower left there to meet the foe.

Back on the right the tank doesn't rest on the laurels of its kill, instead moving to enfilade the oncoming wave of attackers as they become more visible by the dawn's early light. The tank's commander wonders at how dark the Tan troops seem to be, even with the last shadows of night sheltering them from being fully visible. He shrugs it off and orders his gunner to load HE.

A grim-faced bazookaman climbs aboard the rear of the tank and sights his weapon on the enemy ahead, ignoring streams of tracer fire darting in all directions. Tracer fire of only one colour...

The tungsten-core shell and antitank rocket tear the unlucky IFV apart, chunks of hot jagged metal peppering nearby soldiers. The massive blast rocks the nearby toppled watchtower hard, shaking awake the officer inside who somehow survived the fall with a minor bump on the head and an enforced bout of unconsciousness.

As the man groggily gets to his feet and takes stock of the battle raging all around, he quickly realizes the horrible reality of the situation...

As if a switch had been flipped, Green solders on both sides of the "battle" snap out of their bloodlust and finally see the true nature of their "enemies" in the light of the dawn. The major calls out the challenge to the patrol captain, who grimly gives the correct response before ordering his troops to collect the dead and wounded and march to the main gate.

Daylight reveals the extent of the twilight carnage. Roughly half the garrison's strength has been wiped out, with most of the defensive structures destroyed or damaged. The patrol fared little better, losing a quarter of its men and one of its two tanks, though its age and mechanically troubled nature mitigated its loss somewhat.

The two commanding officers confer amid the wreckage, discussing at length the unexplained explosion that started everything and the terrible sequence of events leading to the friendly fire incident. Both men agree that with the garrison crippled and the defenses in ruins, the only course of action is to pull back to the next line of fortifications, pending reinforcements. The officers are savvy enough not to come to any conclusions out loud regarding what happened, though both are quick to try and squash those muttered by their shaken troops.

Surprisingly, the base's main supply, munitions and fuel dumps remained intact after all the violence and action. With orders to load it up ahead of their withdrawal from the ruined outpost, the weary men trudge through the bivouac, unconvinced by their commander's insistence that what happened was a tragic series of accidents.

Little do any of them know as they heave the lot onto trucks, these drums of fuel and boxes of beans, bullets and bandages would prove to be a vital clue in uncovering the true cause of the disaster.

Nice. I remember you telling all those stories about your wars between the different factions on another /amg/ thread. After a massive flood combined with a sewage accident, I'm now working with a cleanup crew on the basement and plumbing. For everything that was destroyed or had to be gotten rid of, I was fortunately able to save nearly all of my toy soldiers/western stuff and Lincoln Logs. After some cleaning, I'll post some pics.

That's really rough, hope the damage hasn't been overwhelming. Glad your armies seem to have survived, looking forward to seeing them. Put together a little Western vignette to get a feel for what a bigger story might look like, no shortage of great films and historical events to draw on but it'll require some thought. Need to re-familiarize myself with the figures and accessories, there's enough for a little indian village so that will probably appear at some point.

Sounds glorious, can't wait to see. Never had Lincoln logs myself but we had an eclectic collection of wooden blocks that served as forts, bunkers, ruins, trenches, bases and more. Really miss them, several of the blocks were very roughly made and in all manner of shapes and sizes, with the rest well made in a uniform cube shape and painted different colors. As I recall there were perhaps a few stray classic alphabet blocks mixed in at most. No idea where we got them from, we had them exclusively overseas and when we returned here for the last time they were presumably discarded for weight and space considerations. Might have a couple pictures of a setup languishing somewhere in an old photo album or storage box, will share if that ever surfaces heh.

Unfortunately, the logs were hit with a bit of dry rot and mold, making them hard to clean. So, I might get a fresh deluxe fort from Roy Toy once I get the money from my decent collector's haul of old Lego minifigures and Disney Aladdin collectibles (quite a treasure trove downstairs). However, the figurines are all in decent condition with only a couple of damaged ones. Once I break out the toothbrush and Dawn dish soap, all will be ready to rock and roll. I might even get my photographer brother-in-law to help me with the pictures.

That's rough, I feel that from when my brother and I once built a castle/fort out of popsicle sticks and glue. We failed to consider long-term storage and constructed it as a single big piece instead of modular components; it ultimately ended up stored in a small greenhouse in the yard with no real protection... Could always build another I suppose, though it's pretty far down my list of priorities heh. Got a few copies of the main plastic castle on the market, should make for an epic fortress once I get around to it (pic related, one of the actual photos from an Amazon listing for the castle, funny caption and all).

Good luck with the fundraising, OG legos should be good money-makers.

Not to stray too far off-topic, but pieces from the Wild West line and The Adventurers should net a lot, especially given that the minifigures are in surprisingly good condition. I also have a Studios line Steven Spielberg minifigure worth 30 dollars in used condition alone, so the Roy Toy Fort and photography stuff shouldn't be an issue. As for the figurines, those will be pieces of cake to clean.

With little going on in the way of offensive operations, the gunners break up the monotony with drills and gossip, the latter inevitably coming around to the now-infamous night of Green-on-Green. An official, if perfunctory, investigation concluded that the disaster likely started with mishandled munitions for the base's heavy gun, setting off a chain reaction of exploding rounds that devastated the base's frontage, with the coincidental arrival of the patrol leading to further tragic consequences. As the entire gun crew perished in the explosions, disciplinary action was limited to minor reprimands of the commanding officers of the base and the patrol.

The blame being placed entirely on some fellow gunners is of especial contention among the crews serving this firebase, unwilling to accept such a conclusion. Speculation on the "actual" cause of the explosions ranges wildly, from wilful sabotage by a traitor to enemy special forces to defective ammunition. The battery's commander turns a deaf ear to the chatter; he knows his men well enough to let them vent a little between gruelling drills. He scans the horizon idly, glancing at his watch in anticipation of ordering another round of gunloading practice.

Just as the officer turns to call his men to drill, a series of blasts rips through the battery in quick succession, bowling vehicles over and toppling him from his horse. Dazed from the fall and the shocks of the explosions the major struggles to his feet, leaning on a nearby pipe for support as his horse trots nervously away, equally shaken despite its wartime conditioning.

The officer takes stock of the situation: the trailer and transport vehicles for the guns and their munitions destroyed or badly damaged; a few crates of supplies smashed; several men killed or wounded. As he assesses the damage he realizes that despite the apparent seriousness of the sudden destruction, his battery is still near-fully combat effective. Though the crews have taken casualties there are still enough men to work the guns, and while the largest piece was knocked forward by the blasts, it is otherwise intact and easily restored to firing order. From the rank and file working to get the battery ready again comes a loud exclamation, tinged with more than a little bitterness:

Three days later, the unexplained destruction at the Hispania VII battery is still under investigation. Not far off another artillery battery stands watch, this one an anti-aircraft station. Indeed, this AA unit is directly responsible for the air defense of the unfortunate field gun battery; the day of the explosions their radar noted nothing of consequence, leading the investigators to rule out any kind of aircraft or ranged weapon larger than a mortar round. Owing to the significant distance of both outposts from the frontier (well beyond even the largest mortars) these also seem unlikely candidates for what is looking increasingly like a deliberate act.

The radar operators keep their gaze firmly on their screens; the thought that they somehow missed an enemy incursion or attack that cost the lives of fellow Greens is mortifying, to say the least. A split-second faint flicker on one screen catches the attention of one, who starts to comment on it as his fellow radarman turns to examine the screen...

A violent shaking of the ground beneath their vehicle throws both men about, their screens filled with static and great radar shadows for a brief moment before shattering. Outside the radar truck, the AA battery is devastated. Both guns lie toppled, one in pieces; burning ammo crates cook off randomly, sending tracers, high explosive and incendiary rounds in all directions as the surviving soldiers seek what shelter they can from the apocalyptic deluge. What was once the inside of a defensive bunker is now a smoking crater, the remains of the bunker's occupants scattered about.

While one of the radar operators exits his damaged truck to give aid to the survivors outside, his colleague gets to work trying to retrieve the data from his station. His cut up fingers staining the console green, he grits his teeth and digs into the hardware, suspecting the momentary flicker on his screen just before the explosions was more than a coincidental system glitch.

Amusing artwork and ESL text aside, I mainly got this set for the naval assets. Always looking for something new and the two vessels with prominent gun turrets were certainly new to me; the carrier is a (mostly) common design floating around, this one stretched out a bit. The other two ships having labels stating what they're intended to be is silly, the more so when the "supply ship" appears more heavily armed than its "battleship" counterpart. Haven't taken the time to find their likely real-world inspirations but they're probably based on Chinese, US or Russian warships in a general sense.

Also included in the set are a trio of nice little fighter jets; from left we have easily recognizable MiG-29 and F-14, while the black one is a little more cartoonish but gives off F-16 vibes overall. Each one has a pull-back play feature with its wheels and can also be "launched" with the green catapult behind them.

Interestingly the various accessories came on sprues, with a number of them being copies or variants of classics (the two-handled ammo crates, the jerry can, the boxes of mortar rounds). The set's manufacturers seem to understand the danger of possessing oil in any quantity, at least when your nation isn't sufficiently democratic in the eyes of America eh. The colored mortar rounds is a nice detail, usually those kinds of accessories are pretty plain. The quartet of rock pieces are a bit odd in having a slit down the middle, presumably for something to fit inside but nothing in the set applies; must've borrowed them from a different set entirely.

Last but not least there's a fairly impressive battle map included with the lot, though for the contents of the set it's something of a mismatch. With only a few soldiers and some base-building pieces for land forces you'd want a map with a large amount of water and/or a good-sized airfield; there is a river opening into the beginnings of a larger body of water, but other than a helipad there's no provision for aircraft. The map designer also scattered barbed wire rings at random, contrasting with proper coils of it at various places. Overall it's an improvement over the empty desert or nonsensical mishmashes of previous sets and can certainly compliment the desert one.
