I'm not sure. But you don't have to buy entire sets to build MOCs, you can buy separate parts off of Bricklink.

I posted last thread that I was gonna try to make some coomer bonks. Here's the first one. The second one is waiting on parts.

Face is idk what, maybe some red hero factory armor, but the hair is a Whenua mask. Nice.

I like it, it's simple and compact and looks easy to pose.

My most recent work I finished last night. Eventually want some color swaps on some pieces but for now I'm done. Supposed to be a sort of UAV/combat drone.

It's the trans shit that killed these threads isn't it? Without reaching out to the extremes some anons do I understand why this is annoying, it's just everywhere, one fucking joke absorbing the fandom everywhere (here too but for different reasons :i.e monkeys throwing shit at each other). I honestly feel uncomfortable talking about this interest due to all this unfunny shit about correlating liking bionicle with being trans. I'm trying to be as "neutral" as I can with this topic but also letting out my frustration because you really can't anywhere else at this point . It's not like this is a topic you can just bring up

I have a sudden urge to play a survival horror game set in a recreation of the Piraka Stronghold based on the 6 character spots and models in the concept art.

It could have hazards and enemies like the little spy camera bug from Thok’s ad, the evil mechanical bull from Vezok’s, retractable arm in the sofa, etc., maybe the noisier stuff alerting the Piraka to your location with jumpscare game over screens similar to Island Investigation (the Free The Band game)

Just needed to get that idea out there. The piraka scared me as a kid and I want to play a game about hiding from them

I haven't posted here in a few years either, and was never much of a regular, but it always seemed like the general and fandom overall was split into groups.

First you have the nostalgiafags. These people want to collect the old sets and talk about them, reminiscing about how cool the Barraki was, or whatever. Like most nostalgia collectibles, this had a resurgence during covid but now is in decline, and will probably continue to die because the bionicle line is old and doesn't get new toys.

Next you have the lorefags. These people like the movies, the stories, the comics, etc, and probably spend hours on the bionicle wiki reading and or writing it. Unfortunately this group has a pretty high rate of autism. On one hand, this autism means the group is the most fervent of fans, but on the other, it means this group is full of trans. And if you get the wrong balance of this group, things get cringey fast.

The last group is the moccers. These people just want to build robots and share them. As a fan who mostly fits into this category, I think 4chan, with its vitriolic discourse, is rarely a good host for them. There's just too much bitching here, and it's all very tired. Lots of, "this uses system so it sucks," or "real bionicle is X, not Y". Naturally this group is going to migrate to places like reddit or instagram where the feedback is more encouraging.

Nostalgiafags and lorefags kind of go hand-in-hand.
They’re afraid of MOCs unless they’re of something that appeared in the movies and keeping everything on-model to Bionicle’s ironically restrictive canon.

Hero Factory may have had a shitty narrative but it’s lack of specific rules was tailored for fans to make their own characters, like with the Hero Recon Team gimmick that they were dumb for canning early on.
Kind of scummy but I’d wonder if they would’ve found more success if they had locked exclusive piece molds for weapons behind custom heroes, encouraging MOCists to make and buy them like how parts exclusive to certain sets already work

I like making mocs that would fit into the EU of the lore. Making extremely on-model renditions is pointless though especially if painting or parts-cutting is required (I'm more loose about that if copycat parts exist though)

I got the idea because I somehow ended up with a shit ton of these orange blade pieces and wanted to use them somewhere. I also had a bunch of these chain link pieces and thought I could cobble together a ragged cape out of them.

I've never seen MOCs discouraged as much as you're suggesting they are in /biog/. Builds that are heavily based on System do genuinely feel less like Bionicle, so I think that critique is valid. Anons hear are also quick to call out illegal connections or modified parts, but those are again things you could call either lazy or wasteful (especially in a defunct toy). Anyway, I don't think /biog/ is so down on MOCs like you've suggested, just that there's a more particular taste here. This photo of the whole "team" doesn't do them justice. Some of these I really prefer over the others, and the builds are all generally really good; I think this general likes builds working within certain limitations, and this is a good example of that. Also, seeing the full set slowly develop post-by-post was super cool.

These three were some of the last I ever made. I wish I took pictures of the others before they were all given away. There was a beige-and-brown one, maybe with dark green highlights, using one of those scorpion-esque heads from the Glatorian waves, sort of ninja-esque. Sort of a spiritual fourth to this.

Thanks. I think his build got very close to my ideal level of articulation and size; the shoulders in particular I really liked the design of. He was a lot of fun given how much of him was constructed without being scaled up massively. Plus the Noble Huna is one of my favourite masks, and the original blue is such a nice colour.

I wanted him to look like a gladiator, thus the trident and buckler. I also like the proportions of Mata-era weapons on slightly larger builds.

As a side note, it's a shame we didn't get more pieces with a similar construction to the Rahkshi thighs. Even other colours would have been nice. Limb construction became very homogeneous later on, and getting out of that structure often inflates the scale a lot. More multi-piece limb sections would have been nice.

Pic related is interesting to me for that reason, and looks a lot like what I would have enjoyed constructing as a kid, though the hyper-specialised pieces like the torsos and shoulder sockets feels like a bit of a waste. Even in actual sets, as nice as the the Mata and Metru torsos look, they're structurally very limiting.

I myself like to build, though I often lack the time to do so. I'm also more of an EU lore kind of guy. I don't feel the need to change existing characters but break the lore in other parts, like expanding what Metru Nui looks like in my head and also losing the gender-element restrictions.
I do use System in nearly all of my builds nowadays, though I try to keep it looking Bionicle for the most part.
I understand criticism through taste varying, but sometimes people just say "thing bad", if they interact with your post at all. Then there is all this bickering about tranny this, greg that and all this meta bullshit that surrounds the threads.
So I understand why someone ends up just not posting.

Honestly I get why many people dislike the Hordika, but really they didn't get enough love. Some added parts and a bit of variation between the characters could have gone a long way for the sets. I like this take on them, with the colours too. I did like the grey for the Metru Toa, Matoran and Vahki, but it wasn't neccessary for the Hordika. I also once tried a revamp, but only for Vakama. Please excuse the quality, the pictures are rather old. I'd really like to try Whenua one day, he was always my favourite.

My biggest issue with the hordika has always been that left shoulder that makes the arm permanently stick out. Asymmetry is fine, but a design forcing awkward posing is not.

The replacement for the left arm construction in >>11114513 (see Vakama and Nopaka) seems like the best replacement for it for being so simple. It almost surprises me they went with the gimp arm when such an obvious and more fun replacement is possible. If you go without the upper arm armour, it's only one additional part and uses nothing not already introduced. I guess it was to sell the mutated look; with the "better" arm they look balanced and more heroic.

I would disagree on the fact that Lego SW was a drain, but that it wasn't enough to save Lego from certain death due to royalties should be nearly unquestionable. Like draining a shinking boat with a mug of coffee that also has a small hole on the bottom of it.
There is a reason why Bionicle was usually among the top 5 themes on the website.
On 2005 it was ABOVE Star Wars on the quick links of the main page (which were usually based on popularity). We are talking about the same year EpIII was released and Star Wars was going big in terms of merch and supplementary media because of that, so that should say something.

I think it had less to do with set design and more with the jarring scenery change. Suddenly Toa and Kanohi and islanders were gone and you had these literally who Mad Max gladiators in a drab desert with lame helmets and mouths.

Look, I will defend the story and world building of 2009 to death, but all that's under the surface and the marketing did it no favors. The commercials were kiddy shit, and it didn't help that people were getting tired of cheap parts quality.

I was excited to get a Mata Nui set personally, and I still enjoyed collecting the comics, but that's about it.

Man, I was in a town where Bionicle was pretty big, and interest took a huge dip the moment those joints started cracking, other kids in the neighborhood didn't say much about the scenery change but I liked it personally, it was better then the Mistika stuff the year before

Back when I was 8 right before my ninth birthday, my dad kept taking me to different stores, looking for the Glatorian/canister size Mata Nui, and none of the stores had them.

Eventually we got to a Toys R Us, shelves were empty, and my dad bit the bullet and bought the titan Toa Mata Nui set for me as a “consolation prize” after asking the clerk if they had the smaller one. My dad was awesome

A year or two later, my dumb ass tried to chrome the Mask of Life with a gold paint sponge because I didn’t like the dull pearl gold and wanted it to look more like the discontinued flat dark gold on sets like Takanuva.
Unsurprisingly, I did a shitty job and ruined a mask that is now $400 after an aftermarket boom.
Is there any way to effectively remove the paint without ruining the mask? It chips off a little at a time. I lost it but it’s somewhere in the house with my old toys

Depends on the paint. Try soaking it in rubbing alchohol and scrubbing it with a toothbrush. Getting it out of the nooks and crannies is gonna be a bitch and it'll take some serious elbow grease.

How concentrated should the alcohol be?

I know iso could probably melt the plastic. It’s gold on gold so it could be worse, but still irritating as hell. I really hate my kid self

Still though, I’m tempted to get the Glatorian Mata Nui on Bricklink or Ebay just to repaint the cheaper yellow mask.
I remember the paint was very weak on that rubbery plastic for the titan set and would probably be more permanent on traditional ABS lego plastic. I was going for something similar to pic related as a kid, might have to sand the parts down a little.
All to make him look more like gold than cheese

I bought this lot on Ebay for $66. Was it worth it? ($45 + shipping)

I’m a massive fan of the 2003 era and a lot of 6 Rahkshi, a Tahu Nuva, and a couple Bohrok Kal with a Nuurakh Vahki to part out the torso for a dark red prototype Makuta mod all looked really tempting.

On closer inspection, a couple of the rahkshi staff blades appear to be broken at the connector and Tahu’s back might have ink or paint on it. Did I get duped?

I sometimes rub some Purell into my hands before handling collectibles. Could that ruin my parts even if I rinse them?

Also in >>11126683 these parts are probably going to be grimy from a kid in 2003 playing with them. Lego’s official page on cleaning parts says to soak them in a tub or bin with mild detergent. What kind of dish detergent would anyone recommend that isn’t harsh on the plastic? I usually have Cascade

Bruv, I've done this a dozen times. You're being paranoid. Just use a brush with soft enough bristles and don't soak for too long. Once the paint is loose, you can just dip the brush in every once in a while and apply it sparingly. I've even done this on translucent masks, and it doesn't even scratch them on any visible level.
