While plans and preparations are proceeding apace for a new offensive against the Tans, a series of bizarre and seemingly unrelated incidents have been plaguing the forces holding the Hispania region. In response to these events, Green High Command for the Army Front responsible for Hispania holds an emergency briefing of all senior commanders. After calling the meeting to order, General Zizka goes over the various incidents, his aide laying out photos of each one on the table.

Once finished, the General polls his commanders for theories. One major repeats the rumors spreading among his troops in Hispania IX (some of whom were directly involved in the infamous Green-on-Green incident) of traitors, enemy infiltrators and even poor quality or sabotaged munitions. Another interjects, arguing it must be some weird Grey superweapon preparing the way for a fresh invasion. A third argues that radiation from the Grey nuke sites and overall low morale after the end of that terrible conflict is to blame.

The General listens patiently for a few minutes before calling everyone back to order. He informs the group they will be hearing some very interesting information from an eyewitness to one of the incidents...

Zizka has his aide usher in a Captain of Anti-Air Defenses who proceeds to describe what his unit experienced the previous week. He details his radio conversation with a patrolling flak unit and its gunner's claim to have glimpsed a strange flying object through his scope, shortly before his base was subjected to a series of devastating explosions. He notes that their multiple radar screens showed clear skies the whole time, with a minor exception - one recorded a split-second hit on a small shape a few seconds before the console was riddled with blast fragments. At the time it had been missed by the operator but subsequent examination of the data had detected the anomaly.

The Captain goes on to relay the experience of another AA unit a few days before his own, where the radar truck for that battery had registered an eerily similar anomaly just before the explosions.

Nodding to the Hispania IX major, he explains that although the formal investigation of that initial incident concluded it was a munition-handling error, subsequent events led to that affair being more closely scrutinized for potential links. While speaking, he gestures for another aide to approach the table.

The fact they are literally red was not lost on me. They're supposed to be Mohawks according to the sellers, but I'm using them as Shawnee for a Battle of Boonesburrough/Siege of Fort Henry deal. Or, the ahistorical portrayal of the Siege of Fort Stanwix as seen in Drums Along the Mohawk (it wasn't the Seneca and Mohawk as seen in the film, but well-trained Hessian and Jager mercenaries from Germany). My next order will be a bag of Texans from one of the BMC Alamo sets to stand in for the pioneers.

Hopefully, it will be awesome. I've also got a 550-piece deluxe Roy Toy log set (the competitor of Lincoln Logs) coming in, which includes plans for a fort modeled on Boonesburrough, although billed when the toy set first came out as Fort William Henry as it appeared in the 1936 version of Last of the Mohicans. My whole plan is to have the colonists fight off the mighty Iroquois horde while the British officers (the paymasters of the natives who gave them liquor and firearms as pay) oversee the battle on a hilltop.

It just sounds glorious and I know it will be, eagerly awaiting the final product. Finally completed principal photography for the current Colour Wars chapter, the remainder of the story will roll out over the course of the thread. In less than a minute the chopper is already a fading memory as the Captain checks his gear again, finds his bearings and sets off into the night. Intel for the immediate area was reasonably good; sporadic Tan patrols but no occupied structures or fortified points, not until just before the primary wire anyway. Regardless, he is quite at ease being alone in indian country, Operation Sicarii and a dozen others having honed his survival skills and warrior instinct to a razor's edge.

The Captain's brisk yet careful pace brings him to the first major landmark of his travels: the old frontier line, abandoned after the upheavals of this year's various campaigns. The detritus of said campaigns litters the area, with knocked out Tan tanks in silent company with an overturned Grey truck, a mute reminder of that last terrible conflict and the painful personal losses suffered by the Elite Force.

The Captain pushes those thoughts aside and notes the exact coordinates of the wrecks, particularly that of the Grey truck; one of the spooks back home may find it interesting enough to send a recovery team to investigate someday.

Morning's glow reveals yet more evidence of the violence the area endured in the not so distant past, with the outlines of a fallen Green gunship and its presumed killer etched against the otherwise peaceful landscape. For a brief moment the soldier contemplates the foolish idea of trying to wrest the largely intact helicopter from its crash site, getting it back in working order and flying it the hell away from the myriad unknown dangers ahead.

Shaking his head and allowing himself a rare silent chuckle, the Captain shrugs and continues his journey, knowing his next encounters with the Tan foe will without a doubt be of the living kind.

A follow-up: the packages are tracked and will arrive on Wednesday of next week to be picked up from behind the post office counter during working hours. Another idea is to use Davy Crockett from the Alamo set as himself, have one of the British officers stand in as Andrew Jackson, and have the Mohawks stand in as the Muskogee Creek. Then fight it out at the cabin at Horseshoe Bend. A sort of Disney Davy Crockett deal. Something to make Dr. Bashir cream and Disney+ scream.

kek I can't believe he lost Travis. That old Fess Parker miniseries was great, we had a VHS of the movie they made with the first series from Red Stick to the Alamo, so much kino. Got a few coonskin cap dudes among my wild west figures, the blue guy here is a bit out of place with his musket and powder horn when everyone else is packing repeaters heh.

Funny story, one of the first army men sets my brother got was a nice cowboys and indians set with many of the classic poses and accessories. There seemed to be a defect with one cowboy pose in particular, a guy aiming one pistol while drawing a second from a holster - can see one in the pic just in front of the white flag guy. One or two of them had lost their heads while still in the package, and more would do so over time from just play and jostling around in bags and stuff. For reasons never explained (at the time or since) my brother called those guys Davy Crocketts. The moniker has stuck and there's still a couple in the collection.

I had an Old Betsy replica which was one of many things lost to the recent flood, plus a coonskin cap that suffered the same fate. Of course, I liked siding with William "Redstick" Weatherford because I found the Creek side cooler-looking. There's also the fact that Fess Parker also played Daniel Boone with the exact same getup, so a Siege of Boonesburrough scene could also work.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the average /toy/soldier is some version of Hide the Pain Harold in real life and toys are their preferred mechanism of cope. That said, what's stopping you from playing with toys and making up stories?

Never been to /fa/ myself but fashion has never been a particular area of interest, though I have started making my own t-shirts thanks to having Cricuts and heat press vinyl at work.

I was very happy to get my British soldiers and now giddily await the arrival of my Mohawk warriors and Roy Toy logs. After my next big payout, I'm then getting the reprints of Disney's Davy Crockett and Johnny Tremain sets to use for the settlers. I'm also going to use Reverend Syn from the Swamp Fox and Scarecrow storylines as a Calvinist minister in a church scene with the meetinghouse build.

The whole thing was inspired by a mix of Drums Along the Mohawk, the 90s Hawkeye series, Last of the Mohicans, and other colonial-related media. Not to mention all of the aforementioned live-action Disney classics, as well. Everyone into toy photography is either into the American Civil War, modern warfare (most of what you see here), or sometimes the Wild West. Hardly anyone does colonial/early American times, from the French and Indian War to the American Revolution to the War of 1812 (including the Redstick Front). I'll be the first to change that.

Once past the tanks the Captain follows the frontier line of barbed wire; experience has taught him that no such line is ever a hundred percent guarded or even intact at all times, and it isn't long before his patient search is rewarded: a fallen tree grants the Green man his entry into Tan territory proper.

Before crossing the line he notes the coordinates of the breach and other useful information on his mission recorder. Should his capture or death be an imminent inevitability he will trigger the recorder to dump all of his gathered intel in a burst transmission... seconds before detonating a powerful explosive wired throughout his gear, vaporizing him and everything in a 20 meter radius. The Captain knows he will not hesitate should such a scenario occur, but hopes to never see his resolve so tested.

Not long after beginning his incursion of Tan territory, the Green officer comes across a purpose-built roadway, a far cry from the rough tracks and semi-virgin grasslands he's had to traverse to this point. Ironically, the road makes his infiltration more complicated, with far less green cover in which to shelter. As if to emphasize this point a Tan patrol rumbles into view, relaxed and distracted due to the safety of being in home country but a serious menace to the Captain nonetheless. He watches and waits for the sandmen to pass by, mentally noting their number and composition to add to the mission recorder after they've moved on.

The patrol gone, he continues his journey, keeping to what plant-based shelter the road offers along the way. After a few minutes his instincts kick in that something isn't as it seems. Using a wrecked Tan vehicle carelessly left on the roadside for cover, he scans the area for anything out of the ordinary. A pair of tan-colored mounds poking from the grassline across the road catches his eye.

A closer inspection of the sight through his binoculars reveals a Tan firebase, with two heavy guns and at least one tank in support. The two "mounds" turn out to be the artificial rock formations widely used by all plastic armed forces as radar or weapon emplacements, in this case the latter with a Tan machinegunner atop each rock.

As with the patrol these Tans are clearly not expecting enemies to be moving about on their turf and the Green officer relaxes ever so slightly. He takes a few moments to determine the firebase's exact coordinates and feeds the information into his recorder.

he mutters to himself, out loud.

A couple clicks further down the road the Captain's spidey senses kick in again; an ominous low rumble in the air and a shaking of the ground beneath his feet raise further alarm bells as his hits the dirt hard, scrambling under the only patch of green foliage for dozens of meters around.

None too soon, as a line-ahead formation of Tan tanks bursts from the wilderness at the side of the road and roars across, a handful of troops struggling to keep pace with the clanking machines. By sheer luck the Elite Force man's hide happens to be just beyond the end of the tank line, much closer than the soldier would've liked but leaving him safe and undetected once again. The gasps, groans and curses he hears from the Tan grunts informs him that he's stumbled into a training exercise of raw recruits, clearly not enjoying being put through their paces. The Captain grins and watches them fade into the distance before getting to his feet and pressing on.

His initial observations are disappointing: standard defensive guns flanking the end of the runway; the same artificial rocks, here with SAM launchers atop and a radar truck to guide them; a pair of ordinary multirole combat jets at the other side of the field. The airfield itself isn't nearly as large as expected either, making the Captain wonder if he's found the right base.

The armored vehicle next to the two jets is clearer now, a flak tank set up according to typical Tan defensive doctrine. Behind the radar truck another fighter jet rests, guarded somewhat lazily by a bored Tan private. Of more interest is another apparent aircraft adjacent to the far SAM mount, just barely visible from his current location.

Stealth technology is hardly new to him; all factions have experimented with various air, ground and naval craft to just as varied degrees of success, but none have been able thus far to create the perfect stealth war machine.

Out on the runway a brace of Huey gunships lands, two soldiers hopping out ahead of an officer who proceeds to address another nearby. The still-running engines of the copters and the distance keep the Captain in the dark as to the nature of such conversation but the results are not long in coming; the latter officer climbs into one of the choppers with the new arrival and his presumed aides and both flying machines noisily ascend into the dusky sky.

While pondering the problem a convoy of Tan light vehicles rolls in, dropping off crates of supplies and munitions. As the airfield's garrison unloads the boxes one accidentally scratches the paint of one of the trucks, a stream of loud profanities dancing through the air all the way to the Green soldier watching them.

This random accident gives the Captain a new angle to ponder: stealth technology works by applying radar-absorbing coatings to the desired aircraft or vehicle, which itself has been designed to maximize the effectiveness of said coating. In all probability the Tans have stumbled across a coating that works above and beyond anything developed to date.

The officer muses on these points and wonders to himself...

He's barely finished when the sudden whupping of helicopters interrupts the Tans' discourse. The Captain slips back into the safety of the trees and quietly works his way closer to the group, figuring the wisest egress route is to complete his circumnavigation of the airfield and find an alternate path back to friendly lines.

Two Tan helos drop down on the tarmac and a single officer jumps out, apparently the very same who had left with the copters earlier. In very short order the cluster of guards is the subject of a severe tongue-lashing for neglecting their guard duties, sending them scurrying back to their posts.

When the mission was launched the Greens didn't know anything beyond the existence of a new airfield; while the implication was that some type of aircraft was behind the attacks, it wasn't certain and no provisions were made for a spur of the moment aircraft theft. Even if he miraculously makes it off the ground and out of Tan territory he'll have to improvise his arrival in Green airspace, over a sector that's already rattled from the attacks.

First off the included battle map is quite different from those that have been seen in other sets - it is more cartoonish, very much a throwback to maps in sets from when I was a kid. A printing error misaligned the lines of several details with their colors which makes the whole thing slightly surreal but I like it, a nice chance from the realism or hyper-absurdism that have been the usual fare.

The sets overall are pure nostalgia bait for someone like me: the classic field gun, scaled-down Timmee-type M48 tank (down to 1/72 from 1/48), radar and rocket trucks (first time in Tan for me), all staples of my childhood armies. The rocket on trailer is too, at the least the trailer part - I got one in a box of army men stuff but never had the full deal until now.

The nostalgia continues with the classic army men flags with equally classic nations represented, waving over the Huey gunship and Mirage F1 included in many army men playsets of old, as was the quonset hut. The Delta-series jet is an oddity to me, can't recall seeing it before though I haven't been into my main air forces bin for a while and there could be precedent.

The soldiers are the humble Airfix British Paras in two colors, something of a departure from the Matchbox US Infantry that would typically be packaged.

Also forgot to mention the tan Huey is new to me; I only had a single tan example previously and it was more the yellow colour that was popular with such sets. Grey versions weren't unheard of, got a couple but it's nice to get more when the vast majority have been green. The bridge piece is a classic, though I'd never seen it in red before. I had seen the stealth in sets online over the years but never got one, must say I was really missing out cuz it's a great aircraft, almost like the F-117 and B-2 had a bastard child together.

This set also has a rocket truck and the rocket on launcher trailer, as well as a 1/72 M48. The other tank is a Chieftain I believe, also a veteran of older sets not often seen these days. Rounding out the lot, that jeep also goes back, this one featuring a funny double-barreled turret on the back. In a lot of those old sets there was a trend of including several of the same jeep, with different mounts at the rear (rocket launchers, guns, even a radome). They could be removed to have just a plain jeep too, a nice nod to the real-world Jeep's immense versatility.

Lastly the troops, again more Airfix British Paras. Was loads of fun getting these and putting many of the components to good use right away, am planning to check out a few more of their sets.
