Second, the West has an abundance of Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Judaeo-Cristian stories to pull from. Most of the time, the references to Western myth is very subtle. Pic related. China only uses "Journey to the West" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" for any mythological basis or references. And those Chinese mythic references are pretty on the nose.
