they're not mint condition and only some of them have weapons, but it feels good to have them. none of them are missing limbs or anything like that.
Generation 2 was my introduction to the series when i was really young, but almost all of the figures i had back then are lost to time.
and it didn't cost nearly as much as i thought it would either.

I love it too. As you stated, RiD did explore this and there are quite a few bad guys with vehicle modes and beast robot modes. There was the needle guy too whomst I deeply regret selling. Never did see the crab car at the store. He and the frog were very hard to find.

I had this as a kid (I'm 19 now) and it was one of the coolest things I owned. The transformers toys that were coming out at the time were amazing quality and really detailed and fully transformed really well. Kind of tedious though.
I also had another one of I think his name was Mudflap? That one was cool, my teacher gave it to me as a gift after I left preschool and I always remembered that.
I've been thinking about how many toys I had as a kid were something to do with giant robots like the power rangers megazord and mechagodzilla.
One thing that I always wished I had was something I saw in a fold out advertisement for some Halo figures I had, and it was like a huge Iron Monger toy that looked completely realistic and you could even take off the helmet of the robot to see the guy inside. It was like the holy grail of toys. Unfortunately I never told my parents how badly I wanted it, so they never knew. Probably for the best since I might have lost it or forgotten it by now.

you had mechagodzilla toys as a kid? I'm trying to think what even would have been out back then. That was pre-monsterverse, right? when I was a kid back in the 90s, there was an attempt to piggyback on power rangers by giving us heisei-era godzilla and ultraman toys. I got some. very nice.

Yeah she was a great teacher and a good person.
I remember my dad bought me this toy one of the times he brought me into the city with him for work. We went into some really fancy nerdy toy store and he bought me this awesome mechagodzilla. I didn't even barely know what it was but, I liked big robot stuff and I liked lizards so. I'm not sure if the one I had was picrel but it was pretty similar to that.

Well I got the Doom and Destruction 2 pack of Windsweeper and Breakdown. I've got to say, these are the shittiest molds I've handled in 4 or 5 years. Really disappointing all around. I can't imagine why anyone would want these two. Breakdown is hollow and flimsy, while Windsweeper wears his entire altmode on his back. The target masters are a whopping 0 points of articulation, with a hinge on the back for the gun barrels. Where did we go so wrong?

You seem surprised somehow.
Any Starscream can become Thundercracker/Skywarp/etc, so they can make more of them easily. Megatron lacks recolor guys to make up the costs of making new molds.

Never had that incarnation of Skylynx or the Japanese guy, but I own and love Skystalker over there. It's a shame he never got a chance to shine on the show - supposedly he was going to end up as the 'leader' of a faction of Predacons consisting of himself, Grimwing, Rot Gut, and eventually Ripclaw and Lazerback who would have sided with the Autobots (though Lazerback would have been a rogue manipulating both factions to try to usurp Predaking); the arc was aborted, though we got a glimpse of Ripclaw and Lazerback in one episode. Would've made things far more interesting, at the very least.

The sad thing is he's pretty poseable as an action figure and his vehicle mode is sleek as a result of it not being so broken up.
It just doesn't make the mould a good transformer despite both results being fairly decent.

NTS, but I wasn't aware of this. Cool - I skipped the regular dudes because I wasn't too interested at the time, but ended up with G2 Dragstrip and Dead end later on anyway; if Breakdown is getting a G2 release, then there's no reason for them not to finish with the other two at some point. Guess I should just finish the group in G2 colors and end up with Menasor anyway, just in a cooler color scheme.

Already said most of my fears, lol. Hasbro is pretty bad at colormatching, so we will probably get dulled down colors, no radical 90s day-glo. Sculpt will suffer for sure, Hasbro has a knack for re-interpreting old designs in a clunkier and less cool way. It's not just TFs, you can also see this in their other retro updated stuff like GI Joe. It just fails to capture that same spark. And lastly, I think they'll upscale them to Deluxe size and lose the sleek, pocketable charm.

In truth, I think most of their updates end up looking worse than the originals, despite having better engineering and proportions and shit.

The neat thing about the vintage toys is they keep on existing even if a new modernized version is made. Do store exclusives ever end up at discount stores after their run? I had this guy as a kid, and I always loved that deco. I nabbed the DotM version of him a few years back, and while the clear blue with silver Cybertronian tattoos looks awesome, I wish they had used these colors for him - apparently, it was something they actually planned to do, but cancelled for some reason.

Why does an almost 200 dollar figure need to partsform when a smaller 40 dollar figure from 2003 is able to fully transform from any mode? It isn't like anything moved since the modes are more or less accurate to the original.

even as a small child I was aware that what made power rangers and transformers robots so cool is that the parts didn't just do nonsensical things like inspector gadget or doctor octopus's segmented metal pieces stretching magically, or some cartoon robot's hand just sliding into his forearm and popping out a gun or a weapon.. they had to actually have hinged pieces that move, and then they can be recreated in toy form.
Making them shapeshifters isn't a bad thing, it's just missing the entire point of transformers. They should have just made a new original hasbro IP about shapeshifting cyborg creatures. it would have sold like hotcakes.. if they didn't make it so ugly.

The weirdest part to get over for me was how their modes had been flipped. Like, their robot (if you can still call them that) modes were actually their alt modes and required conscious concentration to maintain, while the animal ones were now their 'true' forms that they would revert to if their concentration was broken, and was the only mode they'd recover from damage in; it was also the only form the Vehicons couldn't detect for some reason. Primal was no longer a robot that was wearing monkey skin, he was literally a cyborg ape that could turn into a vaguely humanoid form if he thought about it hard enough. Shit was weird.

Fellas, I'm experiencing a deep, unpleasant sadness. My mother found what remains of my old collection of transformers fro 1990-2000-ish, so so many of them are thrashed and broken.
This is all that remains that's remotely salvageable, and even then a few of these simply beyond repair.
It's bittersweet seeing Cheetor and Airhammer remarkably not missing anything (and those guys are going immediately into my collection), but to see my childhood as a spread of broken remains hurts deep.

All the other transformers in the box were broken, one was even painted over.

There were a couple of toys that I could not bear to pack away or part with during the divorce, my Depth Charge, my Scarem, and my TM Tarantulas... which has gone missing in the last two years. All I found of that was a right leg, and I know I had his incomplete body in hand a few years ago.
There's one other toy from my childhood that's in my collection since I found it last year, and that's my beloved MW Starscream, which I posted about a little while back when I found it. These three are the single most important toys I own, for the childhood care & love they represent.

Hasbro uses convert, NOT transform, thereby upholding the claim "Transform is not just a normal word anyone can use, it's a special word only we can use"
If they started using it in a sentence, that would be negated.

I think so too, anon. There are some things in life where, even if you regret not having listened to your elders about, even if you yourself were to go back in time to try convincing your younger self, you in fact know that you would not have listened. I think it comes with the territory of growing up, there's going to be certain things we'll insist on regardless of better advice. What I do whenever i buy used toys, is to fill a meduim sized basin with warm water, add some dish soap, and one bottlecap of bleach for disinfectant purposes. Use a fine bristle bottlebrush to agitate the water and to scrub down the figures. The bottlebrush is good because it gets in the nooks and crannys otherwise inaccessible.

You can also connect the kanabo and the axe together into one weapon, even tab the fire effect onto the end if you're inclined. I also like to put the fire effect on the gun on top of the van mode to make it like a rocket booster kinda deal. Pretty neat over all, I might have to get the TMNT one so they can be pizza buds.

I remember as a kid loving my toys and trying very hard to keep them all straight, but given the best storage method I had was "put them all in the same box", anything with loose parts ended up falling to the bottom, and from one box to another they'd always get mixed up. I do think that as engineering and plastic quality has improved a bit, it's fair for the price to have gone up a little, but I do agree that it's approached a price point that's hard to just snatch up on a whim for a kid at the store. Consider the difference between Ocarina of Time and something like BotW, both sold for about $60 at launch. I wonder what the development costs for both titles were, how big the teams were, how long it took etc.

Well I'm finally home from the hospital with our 2nd kid (we're neither trmendously rich norcrushingly poor btw) and finally got to open my packages and fiddle with things, for a minute anyways.

86 Arcee... boy am I glad I spent 8 bucks on her. Actually my first fembot (only Javelin and the other sniper ever interested me), and she feels like a KO. She isn't, she was new in box, but shes so small and thin and very frail feeling. I havent had a chance to really get into it with her, but geez.

WFC Snapdragon... had one before, sold it, happy to have him back.

WFC Apeface isnt as bad as people say and feels solid, but for what little time I got to mess with him its clsar that Snapdragon is the superior Horrorcon. Very very happy to have both though! I've wanted both ever since I saw the originals in a product catalogue my dad had gotten when I was young.

i always felt that my dad's focus was entirely on us kids.. and Mom just flits from mood to mood, but most of those moods are love and generosity, so okay. They both had just godawful shitty upbringings from pretty flawed parents, so they wanted to not repeat that.
It was just frustrating building up art skills and appreciation of entertainment and maybe some acting talent showing up, and realizing my parents had all of those talents and never used them. They even grew up in california, where they theoretically could have. Massively talented, wasted living in the fucking midwest with humorless assholes, spending all their time working and then drinking to recover from the work. Meh, anyway, I got a fucking lot of toys. So many good memories. I think my general attitude of... appreciation of the value of money helped, I was never demanding and always astounded that it was okay to spend 10 bucks on a transformer.

I honestly think if they didn't do the shitty optimus and just left it as a straight repaint of Grimlock without trying to force it into an Optimus/Megatron thing it would have been better. Like how the EVA-1 repaint of MP10 is pretty neat while being basically as lazy a repaint as these, but it wears its lazy repaint status proudly. The tiny amount of effort they did put in somehow makes it more lame. ideally there would have been an all-new big commander sized dedicated Godzilla mold and it woulda made a load of money still because its GODZILLA but they chose the stupidest way to go about it.

and you can't just have godzilla legs hanging off the back of legs like that. they're huge.
the real tough part is the tail though. it's wayyy way too big and wobbly to just pop off and use as a weapon. you could split it in half for two weapons, but that's still too massive. and there's not much else you can do with a tail that doesn't involve a lot of partsforming. Like at best, it forms most of the internals of the torso, and the head.

The dedicated crosover molds aren't great (both JP cars and Maverick are ok at best, don't know about the party wagon and Knightrider yet), remolding a known good mold is the best option.

trust me, i thought about this... maybe if you remolded the lower legs that part would be okay, and at least the upper back could have the spines without needing to move and fold a part, but... a big floppy penis tail arm is not as cool as a snippy claw tail arm. and a godzilla head is just too stubby to be a cool arm. he'd end up looking like Sky Shadow.
Now that said, if you wanna re-engineer it so that... the godzilla head and neck sorta open up, and a fist emerges and he's got a cool fist with a godzilla head gauntlet on, that can work... or maybe, and this is a real stretch and would work better for Monsterverse goji, you just have the head and neck split open into a big gun-arm that is his arm. very Megatron-y.
As cute and iconic as original goji is, I'm really more of a heisei man.
and even if you are gonna do the 'legs are just legs' transformation, goji has so much pelvic meat, you could seriously fold some of that down and bulk out his calves and change them into robot feet that are not the same.

People love bendy wire tentacle arms, and you could made it detachable, the Goji head arm wouldn't be an issue either, works as a blaster a la Megaman or you could plug a forearm extension into the 5 mm port thats already on his throat.

The thick rex tights can be remolded, they're just kibble.

I think if you must make the tail an arm, there's gotta at least be a way to make the thick base of it turn into quite a large shoulder, and part of it turn into a nice big forearm, and... then with the meat you have left, I guess you can make it a tail weapon. but seriously, the round tip of most godzilla tails, not that good. Definitely wanna go with monsterverse for that. Honestly rather the tail tip just partsforms and jams into his tummy or something.

Think there's any way in hell they can make the Steelbane mold work for a Rathalos? 'Los is pretty much the franchise mascot, so there's no way they won't use him as the crossover, and Steelbane is the only Wyvern-type dragon mold I know of that they could possibly use; we also know they dug that specific mold up recently to do that China-exclusive Crimsonflame dude, so it's definitely something they still have lying around.

Beast Hunters Ripclaw could probably make for a decent mini-Malzeno, and Beast Machines Battle Unicorn could be Kirin. Might be able to turn one of the smaller Beast Hunters Predaking toys into a number of Elder Dragons, like Kushala or Alatreon, or BW Airhammer into a Cephadrome.

The Kingdom Dinobot may be the mold to get the best milage, though, given how many raptors are in the series - and if this is doubling as a promotion for the new game, they can use it for that new raptor mount they've been showing off.

That's why every GI Joe Transformer crossover is an existing Transformers character instead of an original character like the other collabs. Joefags are too stupid to recognize that there are more Transformers than the ones they know from the Bay movies and the very notion of something they don't know existing makes them mad. I've talked to the Joefags on this very site about this when the original Megatron first came out and they got downright furious at the idea of it not being a character they knew because "that's not Transformers."

So yes Megatron cosplaying as Godzilla in a bad repaint is the same as Megatron cosplaying a Hiss Tank in a bad original mold.

At least Megatron I can kinda get - it's a horrible cosplay, but at least he's vaguely saurian-shaped. There's nothing about Laser Prime that invokes a robotic Godzilla copy, and I never even would have guessed that's who he's supposed to be representing or inspired by if the video hadn't explicitly stated it.

There IS a difference. Transformers characters - specifically existing and well-known ones - cosplaying as G.I. Joe characters works (in concept. There's no denying that the actual toys are shit) because it's literally been done before multiple times in the comic crossovers. Laser Prime just getting a breast tattoo is on an entirely different level of laziness - there's no precedent for him being in that universe, and unlike Megatron, he's not even vaguely attempting to resemble the character they're telling us he's supposed to be representing.

If you're looking for cool G2 repaints, the Toxitron Sideswipe is a must-have. The Mirage is pretty nice, too; I also liked the G2 'Shadowstrip' and Towline.

Anyway, if you absolutely had to pick just one design to get or prioritize, I'd definitely go for Sideswipe. I don't think they are going to use a Titan class for a crossover, appropriate though it may be. Titans are expensive enough as is and probably don't sell very incredibly, and there would be the crossover pricetag attached as well.

Maybe Laser Prime could have kept Earthrise's fingers, or Armada Megatron could have kept his knife, or Tidal Wave wouldn't need to partform, but instead their transformatiosn are busier than they need to be.

People have complained about the Mirage mould, it's not the best but I think it's had some pretty enjoyable recolours.
Like the other anon suggested, the watermelon G2 Mirage looks real nice and Crasher is quite slick as well, though I haven't kept up with her price so I imagine she's more expensive now.
Next time it's on sale I plan on picking up the Leadfoot 2-pack just for him.

The designs are distinct enough but what I think will really hold Hasbro back from doing them both (in anything resembling timely) is that they have the same colours not just the same name.
Cybertron and Armada Hot Shots may share a name but they are completely different from each other.

Personally I would prefer they do Armada Red Alert first, to complete the trio, but with Cannonball's mold already existing I doubt it will happen

Any complaints I have about their Jet Modes are essentially endemic to them being so G1 faithful. And really I actually only have problems with Apeface.

Snapdragons jet mode is smooth, shaped right, has proportional enough wings and the cockpit is in a good place. Plus good weapon mounting and landing gear.

Apeface however... that is a rectacle with stubby wings on the back and a nacelle stapled to the front. The cockpit is all the way in the back seat, and frustratingly enough his weapon fits very loosely on this (used) copy so it just falls out of the port. Its like the gun is actually 5.5mm or the port is 6.5mm. May need some super glue correction.

Finally Monster mode. I would say, aside from Apefaces weird off white plastic and battle damage, they are engineered about equal. Very awesome together. That's how it worked on his original G1 toy too, though. The difference is that his Headmaster's legs were sculpted to look more like an actual lower jaw on the old toy, while the new one has more or less the same generic legs that all modern Headmasters do, but with some bumps to simulate teeth.

I got G2 Grimlock and I no longer have any desire to get the "regular" SS Grimlock. I don't mean that as an insult either, it's a great mold but the G2 tiger stripes deco goes so hard and I already have the Takara Volcanicus boxset for G1 colours rep, so I'm happy with just having him.
Still upset the SS86 Slag came out a bit potato shaped in dino mode though. He's my favourite Dinobot but I just don't like the SS86 figure.

that's a trickier one. The plurality of digimon are roughly humanoid/kaiju-shaped, which is just not great for transforming into a robot. You could maybe have a vehicle that transforms into a digimon-shaped robot mode, that's not a bad idea at all.

yikes. Digimon designs have from day one always been designed to be cool monsters. The majority of the best of the original Gen 1 designs were almost straight copied from Dragon Quest and everything else is just soulless committee designed plushie fodder. Plus Sugimori has gone on record as saying that he deliberately makes sure every Pokemon design looks bad because making them look cool would make kids not want to be friends with them.

Sugimori is still designing monsters, and he didn't design all of the original ones. His main thing was illustrating the designs the whole team made by drawing them(they were largely designed as pixel art initially)
The real issue is that Pokemon struggles under the weight of a dozen masters, having to be mascots, appeal to multiple demos, and fit into the idea of what people think pokemon is. The first wave of Pokemon were done unencumbered by that, literally ever subsequent generation is designed in regards to other factors.

yep. Gen 2 notoriously had a hacksaw taken to its dex very late in development and had nearly every Pokemon in it redesigned with the sole reason of being able to sell plushies to little girls (they are on record admitting this.) And Gen 3 Pokemon were designed to show off the GBA screen so they're all covered in multicolored patterns, with a lot of objectmon and stuff added in to "redefine what Pokemon could be."
