Heh that's the idea, only have rudimentary skills (and limited patience) for it but I'm usually satisfied with the end results. Not sure anyone noticed but I also adjust the color levels depending on which army is dominant in the shot (i.e. emphasizing green-blue when the Greens are, bit of red for Tan, desaturating to a few ticks above greyscale for the Greys).

Looking through the websites listed, is there any difference between the figures there and say the cheap ones from Dollar Tree and the like? I assume quality and variety would be significantly higher. I’m really eyeballing some of those American civil war ones.

Generally if it's a name brand like Armies in Plastic, Timmee, BMC etc the quality will be higher and variety will (usually) be fixed. Dollar store fare tends to be no-name brands with quality all over the place and usually a random assortment of poses.

My experience of ACW sets is limited to a few randoms here and there in mixed-bag buys and a few sets ordered from the States. Those latter were the Hing Fat/Billy V sets, pretty sure another company originated them as the quality was pretty rough, with lots of flashing, broken bits and stiff plastic. Recently got in a couple sets from China that are of the same armies and gear and just from looking in the packages seem to be an improvement quality-wise. Still haven't opened them up yet for a proper review, been a bit of a week and a half but maybe later this week we'll get a closer look.

Thanks. I recently rewatched The Buccaneer and got the idea to do the Battle of New Orleans. Featured are BMC British soldiers, the Mexican army from the Alamo set as US regulars, the pirates as pirates, and the Texans as Tennesseeans. The Mohawk warriors from CTS are standing in as Cherokee and Choctaw allies. My next big project idea is to chronicle the life and career of Davy Crockett from the Creek War front of the War of 1812 up to the Alamo. The Alamo will be my big blowout project sometime between Christmas and New Year's. Stay tuned!

As for good deals on Civil War stuff, I used to find them about a decade ago at the local dime store (yes, our area has a dime store still that is famous statewide and with international tourists for selling old-school toys, particularly trains and Wild West stuff). It was the Gettysburg brand you can still find online from back-catalog sellers on eBay and Amazon. These days, only the mid-quality ones from Hobby Lobby are available. Those are the ones that use the pre-1863 Confederate flag rather than the more infamous post-1863 one. Hobbytown USA has more accurate ones with both flags (uncensored surprisingly) and even butternut uniforms and plain-clothes militia ones, albeit for Armies in Plastic-level prices.

Set has a nice pair of artillery pieces with caisson, plus a classic conestoga wagon. Unfortunately no horses were provided for the wagon, while the two included in the set don't have holes in the flanks to hitch up, a minor inconvenience for myself with a large collection of horses and such.

In keeping with the western theme of the map we have a cardboard general store (with opening front doors set a little ways up in a well-intentioned attempt at depth), teepee and canoe. The split rail fences and vegetation are nice, though the palm trees are a bit out of place unless engaging in Texas, Florida or other appropriate southern states.

The troops are copies of older AWC soldiers, better quality plastic than I've experienced but with a few quibbles of their own. All the sharp points seem to have been deliberately nerfed with rounded bits; a few of the poses are undersized relative to the others; a couple are a bit distorted as well. The pose selection heavily implies a Confederate charge against a Union strongpoint, a la third day of Gettysburg or Franklin (the pose selection was likely copied from a Gettysburg set). There's one unfortunate extra Confederate mounted man without a horse.

The other set is even more off-base with its battle map (the same modern warfare one from the stealth bomber set of earlier) and accessories: barbed wire, sandbag walls, WW2 field guns, quonset hut. The cardboard Unit 567 army building is a nostalgia trip for me, it and another similar cardboard building were packaged with Matchbox US Infantry and various accessories in awesome playsets of two-three armies and everything needed for a battle.

Nice. I prefer the older Gettysburg sets more since the cannons look closer to Napoleonic howitzers and the Confederate flag is included for historical accuracy reasons. I'm curious as to where I can get covered wagons like the one in that set to use for Oregon Trail, Boer Trek, and Rorke's Drift set-ups.

I feel the same, even have a couple sets of those coming up from Burgerland later this month. I mostly got this set for the figures and some of the accessories; the rest is bonus and can serve well for different scenarios. The large cannon are grudgingly good enough for ACW siege warfare I'd argue, while the generic AT gun with big wheels is a passable Parrott if you aren't nitpicky. The first time I encountered them with the big wheels was in a Wild West set, even.

As for the wagons, there is one included in the left-most set >>11148358 though as noted it does not come with suitable horses. The same company offers a Wild West set with two such wagons, one of them without the cover but instead a cardboard "ammo" box to fit inside; the horse situation is better as well, the ones included having the holes on the sides to hitch to the wagons. Ngl the shipping cost may be a deterring factor. This set is on my list to pick up, got two modern military ones coming so it'll probably be another month before I do the Wild West set.

Years ago I had more wagons than I knew what to do with, ended up selling a bunch along with a bucket of cowboys and indians through kijiji.

I don't normally trust AliExpress, but I do like that there's a birchbark canoe I could use with my pirates so they could pass as voyageurs. Plus the wagon would work for any situation calling for a wagon. I wonder if anyone makes mules or oxen in 1/32 to replace the horses?

While it is certainly possible and even quite likely there are toy/miniatures companies that have produced such things, the non-standardization of army men toys means they'd likely be best compatible with in-house products and not so much others, even if the latter were derived/copied from their originals. Not that I've ever seen mules or oxen made specifically to pull wagons/carry riders, though admittedly I've not looked very hard.

Over the years my brother and I accumulated a large collection of cowboys and indians, with a significant number of mounted figures and their horses. And let me tell you, mixing and matching figures and horses across different brands is usually an exercise in frustration: horse peg holes will be too small or too large for anything but the figs/wagons they came with; horses that don't have peg holes will only seat riders designed specifically for them, and often not very well/at all; size differences will have little ponies with oversized riders, either from original design or managing to get two distinct brands to cooperate.

The two black horses hauling the red wagon here (which almost certainly started out with the same cardboard supplies box as featured in the Chinese set above) seem a tad undersized compared to the cowboys around, while the single horse pulling the following wagon is a better fit compared to its driver. While difficult to make out from this angle the green redskin archer would be a better fit to his pony as a mongol hordesman, while the fanciful blue mohawk ahead of him is astride a more realistic western stallion. The dying red cowboy by the wagon is a closer fit to his mount, but somewhat of a manlet relative to his fellow cowpunchers (save for the blue guy in the wagon).

I'm not one to be bothered by scale inconsistencies but mismatched horses and riders are a harder sell than most.

The one thing I know is that the smaller figures are usually 1/35 scale while the better-quality ones are generally larger by a bit at 1/32. I always read the bag or box before buying to try to keep a standard size of 1/32ish. Then it scales to G Scale miniatures/train supplies which are between 1/32 and 1/24 depending on the company (for instance, Gold Rush train sets including the Christmas tree train my family had long ago are Gauge 1 G Scale since they fit my toy soldiers perfectly). I'm pretty particular about scale.

First things first we have the battle map, a significant departure from the ones seen to date. It appears to be a photo of somewhere in the real world, though judging from the vegetation it is nowhere near anywhere the ACW was fought. The white border is a bit annoying, confining the "action" to within the frame, which helpfully names the company and origin of manufacture.

Whenever I buy playsets these days I'm typically most interested in what my child self would've largely overlooked or undervalued - the terrain and base-building components. There's a generous allotment of wooden fencing but what really caught my attention were the stands of pine trees. From the preview images they seemed smaller than they turned out, a pleasant surprise. They're also quite hefty, being made of dense plastic compared to most army men trees being paper-thin and flimsy.

One of my very first army men "buildings" was a tent just like these, in green and with a medical red cross sticker on it. Still got it in a bin somewhere, the sticker long eroded away but the tent itself still ready to go. The amusing and slightly controversial state of the flags does not bother me, though I will note the irony of a plain red flag (symbolic of no quarter or communism) being rather worse than any Confederate flag, while the 39-star Old Glory never officially existed outside bad guessing by flag manufacturers, long after the ACW to boot.

Two wagons of standard design, with 14 horses in black and brown. The horses are unfortunately more than a little unstable on their stilted legs, some more so than others. This becomes a bigger issue when adding a mounted soldier, as will be seen in a bit. Going entirely off the amazon listing photos one could be forgiven for not expecting the staggering amount of artillery included, 19 guns in all (the listing does itemize the contents and indicates 18 cannons, guess I got a bonus gun). Though a token effort was made to adjust the classic AT gun design to work with the larger spoked wheels by adding a little piece by the tow ring, the unfortunate reality is this gun cannot be depressed to a flat trajectory - the two nearmost guns in pic are slightly lower due to forcing the piece below the barrel a bit. One would have to add something to raise the back of the cannon if you want to blast an oncoming battalion of infantry with double-canister, but that's a moot point to the target audience who would be thrilled to get so many cannons.

For all that artillery there isn't a single obvious artilleryman figure in either army, but many of the poses could be pressed into service. Going off the listing photos I reckon the soldiers included are utterly randomized, though it would take another set to verify this (rather hesitant to saddle myself with another dozen and a half artillery pieces to find out, might look for a way to get more of just the troops).

Hilariously one of the poses with several multiples is a Johnny Reb holding a very uncensored Confederate battle flag, oops! Unfortunately for these Rebels their pose assortment doesn't suggest much in the way of actual combat ability, with only a single prone man even aiming his rifle and two more in back apparently trying to stab invisible bluejackets in likewise prone positions. The lone Reb officer is also pointing his pistol vaguely in the direction of the enemy, but his attention is not quite on target.

There were four mounted figures for each army, leaving two surplus horses which is unusual but most welcome. On the other hand they were not given much thought in the design process, being difficult to snap rider and horse together. The soldiers are also too large for their mounts, but in the Confederates' case at least they sit reasonably well on their mounts.

The Yankee cavalry by comparison is a fail on several points (just like the real thing until late war heh). The pegs for clipping the riders to the horses are too far down their legs, making them appear to hover over their saddles, or they would if the officer figure wasn't so laid back while leading the charge. The three troopers with him are all the same figure with unit standard, redundant and quite useless in the face of the enemy.

The foot soldiers are a much better lot, with much more aggression in their stances and having three guys aiming their weapons to the Rebels' two. I was especially thrilled with the drummer figures, definitely something that's been lacking for my troops from that era.

Overall it's a playset for children first and foremost, you're not going to get much in the way of historical accuracy from it and that's ok. For myself I consider it more of a complimentary kind of set to existing troops in my plastic armed forces, particularly owing to the haphazard pose assortment and count for both sides. Hopefully I can find a way to get more of the soldiers without having to double their already ridiculous artillery train, from the listing photos there are at least three poses that didn't make it, all really good ones whose absence is sorely felt.

Checked and thanks. I'm working on a series of Colonial/Early American stuff from the French and Indian War to the American Revolution and up to the Alamo. Principal photography took place over the weekend, post-production will be chipped away at over the week and the new chapter should start rolling out sometime next thread (which I will have up in a few). Also have a couple more sets from China to share.
