"You know Black Myth Wukong!?" they asked, and I told them a bit of what it's from then said it inspired stuff like DB and they had no clue, so I don't think that's accurate. Anthro animals in pop culture are quite a constantly popular thing, and Wukong is just an extension of that on top of DB/anime like power levels. It isn't hard to understand why someone might latch onto the idea of Wukong as a character for a number of reasons. Certain other myths may be too rooted in a different culture for most people to so quickly or easily latch onto especially with no basis like from a Disney movie they grew up with, but a powerful monkey stands aside from all that (at least from the get go).
