I just got an email from the camera store.

I found a bunch of little dudes mostly Germans, but with some British commando and moon guys.
I actually bought more moon explorers.
haven't really played with those yet.

There is a park abou t3/4 of an hour from my place with statues memorializing the move to Canada and the Irish Potato Famine.
These fuckers look like that.
I ended up ordering from a different company and got the same guys in brown. I had hoped that the figures would have been "cleaner" they were not.

I like 'em, there's a surreal vibe going on that suits your photography style well. Can recognize some of the poses they seem to be drawn/inspired from, pretty common in cheaper army men fare. Think the marching guy with slung rifle is New Ray, the guy with light machine gun might be as well. Will give them credit, they made changes from the originals to give them a more distinct appearance.

About the size of model kit toy soldiers...
My girlfriend visited short after this and I hid them. She doesn't mind my toy addiction - but she would be pissed I bought crap.
Honestly so am I.
I also wish the North Koreans were as well sculpted as the Americans for this set.

it was just around sundown and our eyes were used to the dark at that point. (the place we were had a lot of areas with no windows and "blast doors" ). Actually went there a week ago and it's all offices, condos and shit and the building we explored gutted and "revitalized" (ugh.)

They're pretty good, would say they capture your style fairly well. Though I use my phone camera for all my shots now I only know the most basic bits of it, all my editing is done with irfanview and/or gimp, sometimes pixlr.

I hear that, seems to be a good descriptor of this general as a whole too. Before the 14 days to autosage malarkey it didn't matter so much, the army men gen could last half a year before capping and it was maximum comfy for it. With such a small community it's a challenge to keep it going with having to restart every few weeks; doing episodic stories has kept it interesting for me and hopefully others but I need some downtime from that to come up with more ideas. Winter will be hitting soon too, not sure I'll be up to much outdoor shooting, was different when I worked at the ice rinks heh.

The ones that I have owned for over 30 years are kind of a yellowish cream.
But that's the colour they always were. The box has a picture of them that are also that colour. I don't want to give all of the little bastards an ink wash. do you think a light?
(asked the only person in the history of /toy who WANTED light to yellow the plastic. )

Er I couldn't say, all the astronauts I've ever owned have been a light grey color and from the same general set. The plamotists would probably be able to weigh in on that better.

Those teeny knights are great, got a bunch in one of those castle sets alongside their more conventional-sized cousins and they've been useful for some forced perspective shots.

Why yes that does bother me greatly. One tank, two names, both of them opposing generals in the same war? I mean the tank itself wasn't all that great to begin with, hardly worthy of the name Lee or Grant. Mind you, naming our tanks after the losers just feels wrong, the Stuart ought to have been the Custer in my books.

Interesting, only other colour I've seen them in is orange, much reduced in size as well. Got them secondhand in a mixed bag of stuff, guess they came with a space exploration set or something.

Heh reminds me, the first time I got some of those astronauts was in a set that had a space shuttle and two rockets, plus an American flag. The flag was interesting in that it was a paper sticker kind in a fluttering pattern, implications...

Semi-related, the Red and Blue factions have yet to make an official appearance in the Colour Wars, at least in the Modern Era. Both factions are considerably smaller in number compared to the big three, but may have some advantages of their own to make one Blue or Red worth many more of a rival colour. Still mulling over ways to introduce them to the conflicts/

After a bit of a break we're back to getting in more chinese crap, in this case a couple of sets from Ali that aren't VIIKONDO for once. And it shows, as we'll see soon... Only gone over the one on the left but I wanted to share the interesting box the other set arrived in (without its own storage bag I might add, the various components were just in a series of plastic packages loose in the box).

Right off the bat I want to gush a bit over how nice this battle map is, one of the largest to date and actually feels like it could be a real-world locale, with mostly well-illustrated details (the craters come off more as open sores or rents in the earth) - I appreciate the cracks and scarring on the helipad and concrete.

The map strongly suggests a mostly land-based affair, with implications of amphibious warfare and helicopters. Neither of these are included in the set's vehicle offerings; instead we have a trio of late Cold War jets (from left): F-4, MiG-29 (humorously labelled as F-12) and F-14. One of the reasons for purchase was to finally try out this quartet of armoured vehicles that appear frequently in such sets. Admittedly my expectations were not high, so they were in fact met, barely. The toymakers created a generic chassis piece with pull-back play feature and just used it with four different hulls, all easily recognizable as (mostly) late-war German (clockwise from bottom left): StuG III, Panzer V Panther, Sturmtiger, Panzer VI Tiger I. The barrels have limited elevation but for all but the Sturmtiger they will revert to their lowest point, having no means to stay up on their own. Can probably remedy this a couple of ways but a detracting issue to be sure. I'm also not sure if the Panther's silly shortened and tapered gun was intended that way or if I got a manufacturing error.

Also often seen in those sets are variations of these two artillery pieces. Couldn't speak to left's origins but right can be traced to the old Siege board game (Weapons & Warriors and other names outside Canada), with this version being dumbed down from the OG and is non-firing. Also included are a pair of crappy mortars just as ubiquitous in such sets, with enough oil drums and jerry cans to risk a democracy-bringing visit by the USA.

All but the cave entrance with grill here were on a pair of sprues, not an unusual occurrence as I've been finding with some sets. The odd part would be the comically undersized tents and sandbags, barely adequate for 1/72, never mind the rest of the stuff in the set.

The medieval tower is nothing new, another piece harking back to the Siege game. Interestingly they've got a 1/72ish version of the watchtower, which itself has a new piece (to me) in the form of a detached ladder.

Rounding out the accessories is this facade building, differing from the ones previously encountered in that the garage is now a solid part of the piece instead of being able to open up. The palm trees are on the small side but can help thicken a forest of larger trees; and of course there's the smattering of action figure-sized weapons they just love to toss in for giggles.

Since I'm on a roll let's continue, though before getting to that Danbo-boxed set I have a few vehicles ordered from the same store that had the trio of (not blue :( ) BTRs shared last thread. At about 8 maplebucks apiece it's not cheap to buy these cheap-looking things but for the most part they're difficult/impossible to get outside large expensive sets and I'm always looking for variety. This pair is an interesting one in that both do feature a lot in many such sets but they've always been smaller, more towards the 1/72 size.

I personally don't make a big deal about scale issues with army men, though the smaller stuff tends to be shunted to the background or used for perspective shots; these can fight alongside my standard troops no problem, a nice missile launcher and radar unit, inexplicably adorned with prominent UN markings while dispensing with UN white.

Also from that store we have a pair of A-10s to bolster the close air support component of my plastic air forces that is far too dependent on smaller aircraft (with smaller payloads) for that role. The ship is a design I don't believe I had in my fleet yet, while the rocket tank at center is interesting in that it is a variant of a much more common tank, one with twin barrels that have appeared in the Colour Wars and will indeed show up again in a few.

On now to the Danbo set, as I've taken to calling it. First off the main selling point for me - rockets and more rockets. I'd already got one of those rocket trucks in another set but the BRDMs with rocket turrets (the same one as the rocket tank above, with paint apps) made this a must-buy. Tanks are quite easy to get for your troops, jeeps and trucks almost as easy but armour of any other kind tends to be spotty so anything along those lines is always welcome.

And what do you know, more rockets. Nothing new to me here, in fact we have that Patriot-type launcher truck seen in bigger form a couple posts ago, now in its more common size. Alongside are two amusing frankenlaunchers, created using the vehicle part of the M270 MLRS and replacing the launcher with either a single large rocket or a pair of skinny rockets (which even more amusingly are scaled-up AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles).

After the latest WMD debacle against the Greys you can bet the Greens aren't taking any chances with their rocket stockpile.

As promised we get to see that high-profile twin-barrelled tank, two of which come with the set. The quartet of little MBTs with fixed turrets aren't exactly game-changing but can serve as background armour or battlefield wreckage.

Finishing up the vehicles from the set is this car park's-worth of jeeps and rocket trucks, again on the small side. I do want to note that all the vehicles with actual wheels (the shiny-wheeled ones) roll very well - even right off the book there when the cat moves around. That one jeep having three variants is also a nice touch. I tipped over one each of the non-wheeled units cuz I'm not sure what they're going for with that.

Most of the rest of the stuff comes in sprues and is obviously of smaller scale. The ruined building pieces are nice, more detailed and different than the usual ones included; the firearms are intended to be pegged into that half-moon bunker as stationary weapons with an M-16-type being an odd choice but we'll go with it; the single tiny piece of barbed wire per sprue makes me wish they'd just included a few more instead of the medieval-era tower, which I have so many of already and in at least three or four different sizes (all of them much too small to be taken seriously).

The other two sprues have their own positives, notably the "MAP" and "let's go" signs and the fuel drum as large as the additional (sigh) medieval tower). The pile of logs piece seems new to me too.

It comes with a significant airpower component, with three army choppers, four stylized but recognizable jets (from left: MiG-29, F-14, F-15, F-18) and three rather less military choppers with pull-back play feature. Props to blue, its play feature worked beautifully, whereas light green was less successful while dark green's didn't work at all. Not sure why they were included, except perhaps to distract a younger sibling.

For vehicles it's a small world after all, something I accepted going into the purchase (and should've been an indicator for the part of the set most interesting to me) and in this case being more of those mini-MBTs and non-wheeled rocket trucks. Note, I tried to peel off the Pakistan flag to fix it but it started to tear so they're all staying as is. Anyway, I'm ridiculously thrilled by one element in particular of these various accessories, all of which are pretty good and serve to make this set worthwhile in my eyes again. The barbed wire is good quality and the two non-palm trees make fine additions to my plastic forestry, but the real gems are those sandbag walls.

Longer than I've been alive, that sandbag wall design has served countless plastic armies across countless battlefields, but in all that time it has struggled with a basic design flaw - the peg and clutch method of connecting the two pieces. Some makers used two pegs, others one peg, but the problem is fundamental to both: QC issues with the plastic quality or the molding process means just assembling the two halves can be a chore, one that often risks the outright snapping of a peg or clutch.

Some more recent makers resolved to sidestep the issue by removing the peg and clutch altogether, merely providing the sandbag walls to be stood up together. Their problem however is they usually just make one half, meaning you can't replicate the original arrowhead with them.

Ok that was a bit of a rant but I'm getting to the point. Whoever designed these went with a slot connection instead of a peg, relying on simple friction rather than a risky clutch. I cannot overstate how happy this makes me... ok I'm done gushing, still some stuff left to look at (and sigh wistfully over).

And that wraps things up for that last set. No, I didn't forget anything; this set does not include a single soldier. Oh I went back and double-checked, the red stripe is actually on the top and not the bottom of that one flag, easy mistake with the stickers being so off and the flag piece being red. Means the flag is either Bolivia or Ghana, though they are missing a coat of arms and black star in the center respectively. Not that it changes anything really...

Armies in Plastic seems the main way to go but I'm not quite ready to expand into that territory. Feel like I should be better organized and focused first, my interests and resources are divided between army men, legos, mega and a couple other things and eventually I'll have to start downsizing one or more.

I did look at AiP's riflemen and while they were decent enough I was disappointed they didn't have a truly Sharpe-esque pose, understandable with their penchant for general historical accuracy but still. Meanwhile there's a nice chinese legos line of Napoleonic figs, already got a couple greenjackets and some other guys (someone still needs to make a lego-sized Nock gun) so that itch has been scratched, heh.

Seems my musket-armed plastic troops will be limited to ACW for the time being.

This was a little earlier in the battle; the right flank of the Rebel assault did make the most progress, having driven the Union defenders back from the fence to a second defensive line just in front of the artillery. A few men were able to get over the fence, right before being torn apart by Yankee reserves pouring into them.

I neglected to get much of that side of the battlefield, it was a bit chilly, starting to get late and seemed to threaten rain by the end.
