Is it true that using regular tamiya plastic cement reduces the air bubbles when the goo cures compared to the usual advice where they tell you to dissolve sprues in tamiya extra thin cement?

"They" usually tell you to dissolve it in MrCement S.

But, basically, dissolved polystyrene is way too viscous for proper casting (unless you're casting 3D primitives), so if you want to recast something you use resin which has a viscosity of water (and you can get bubbles even then). Dissolved polystyrene is better suited for patching holes, trivial sculpting or similar simple puttying jobs.

Since we're talking about casting, I figure I'd ask: Assuming that I learned how to properly make two-part silicone molds, is there a decent/reliable way to melt sprue in order to recast a piece? My dad is an engineer so I might have access to some tools like a vacuum pot to help reduce the chances of bubbles forming in the mold and casting process.

The reason I want to use the same plastic is because there are going to be pegs and holes on the parts that I need to insert into, and I'm pretty sure resin won't work for that. So ideally I want to melt runner into a very thin consistency, pour it into the mold, shake out bubbles and such, and use a vacuum pot to suck out any remaining bubbles.

You're not listening. Melted sprue is too viscous for the air to escape before it solidifies and if you add so much cement that it is not viscous, the cement will take forever to evaporate AND what's left will only fill like 30% of your mold because most of the stuff you added to the mix will evaporate.

The ONLY valid reason to use melted sprue is to patch/add to the piece that you are NOT going to paint so that the plastic matches perfectly. That's it. For everything else you use actual casting materials designed for casting.
You can add steel pegs to the resin part or you can just use CA cement to attach the resin to the plastic or you can make resin pegs and they will work to some extent (pic related).

heat it to a few hundred degrees in an injection molding machine. also your mold had better be made out of machined steel.

of course resin works for that, have you ever seen a resin GK? they have pegs for holding all their shit together. it's not supposed to be as good for mechanical joints though due to durability IIRC. if you're really crazy about it you could scratchbuild the peg itself out of polystyrene and pin it to the main resin piece

I gave up after a while with sanding since it took half the day and my back started hurting. I'm gonna finish it up over the next few days. Do some painting and apply the decals. I got it to practice for the cool ac models that will arrive next month. I'll post the results if I don't fug it up.

if you want dspiae they have a 5 blades + handle set that you can get for only around 41USD, that shop is quite expensive.

I would recommend DSPAE. For panel lines 0.2mm and 0.3mm should be enough for most cases.

I don't think you'd use them very often unless you work with 1/144 planes or other small scale stuff (not robots).

The handle is $5ish, the chisel itself is $12ish.
The new "Dawning" ones are around $25 (handle included). BMCs are still better though.

You certainly can hand paint with lacquers. They are not as forgiving as enamels, but for small details they work just fine.
As for the respirator, it depends. If you have a great big dish filled with thinned paint in front of you then yeah, you will need protection. But if you thin a tiny amount you're probably not even going to smell it.

Nope. The new bottle is 60ml while Spare Bottle is 80ml.
Current MrColor wholesale pack is 6 x 10ml jars, with the new bottle they can conveniently sell you the whole pack all at once :-)

But you gotta admit that the resemblance between GGX and Gaiacolor EX series (which also has white, black, clear flat and a few more basic colors in oversized bottles) is pretty uncanny.

Somehow I doubt a non-lacquer based thinner could thin the current MrColor paints, so the GGX thinners must still be lacquer-based. As for new "likely" regulations, it's probably the case of prohibiting some specific substance that "is known to cause cancer in the state of California" or someshit.

So I saw a build video of the HG Dragonar-3, and since people who ordered from overseas have to wait a month, I have been thinking if I could paint fluorescent blue on the eye ring piece. it can be a relatively cheap hobby. hg model kits are around 20 bucks, you can brush paint or use paint markers for cheap. (my local store has little bottles of hobby paint for ~$3 each).
it gets pricier if you wanna start airbrushing but still comfortably sub $1k total to get all the tools you need for that (~$100 compressor, ~$100 airbrush, ~$200 for a spraybooth if you wanna spray indoors, plus misc shit like masking tape and alligator clips)

If you just want to assemble them like children's toys (e.g. just exactly follow the instructions), they're very cheap. But unless you buy a Real Grade or Master Grade it'll look like crap, and even a straight RG and MG build will look bad because of the bare plastic look.

The whole point of getting deep into the hobby is to try to improve it beyond the bare plastic look (paint shades that match how they look in the anime, color correction for the parts that are molded in the wrong color, not using any stickers, etc.), and for that it can get relatively expensive. However, there are only four mandatory tools that are actually expensive: Airbrush, compressor, spray booth, and respirator. And even then you shouldn't pay more than $200 for any one part unless you're super picky (hell, you could probably build a really shitty spray booth for less than $50 if you don't mind doing DIY). An airbrush setup sounds expensive, but if you're serious about the hobby then it's actually cheaper in the long run since your other option is to buy spray cans for $10-20 each. Airbrushing, despite how expensive all the equipment is, saves you money on the paint due to how much more efficient it is (you can control the intensity of the spray instead of an on/off push) and being able to mix shades of color that aren't available through rattle cans.

Ultimately it's all up to you, but compared to other hobbies like bicycling or whatnot, modeling is super cheap. Most of the expensive stuff are one-time purchases that you only do once, the painting consumables aren't all that expensive if you buy in bulk (the other thing you learn, shipping charges add up super fast if you order online inefficiently). Do your research, ask questions (no such thing as a dumb question if you're just starting out), and plan things out before committing.

The one on the right is presumably the one that comes with the kit. I believe those are the correct colors. I'll probably get the set. It seems rather nice for $100, which is also conveniently right into free shipping. Been on a Zeta kick recently and just finished The O HG and was eyeing a Hyaku Shiki anyway.

Currently working on probably my favorite MS. Finally got around to grabbing the revive after getting the funnel kit for a decent price.

Pretty sure wave has the only decent sorta modern kit for the classic slug, but I don't think it's been printed in forever. Xinshi makes new kits but they kinda blow.

They have a good silhouette and the right proportions, but you really have to doll them up to look decent.

They fixed alot of issues but the twllgeese has a few issues of its own. Nothing too major but there are some. Mine has been fine, though has been stored in a box for most its life.

Gunpla is something you can just not buy and be perfectly fine and alive. The same doesn't apply to a bunch of other everyday things that would shoot up in cost that you simply have to purchase.
