The name comes from the card/back artwork for the figure, which was one of the covers from Action Comics #1000.
It's generally considered the best and most evergreen comic accurate Superman figures ever made by Todd. It also came out in the early days of the line, when it was selling for shit and had really god-awful distribution due to the number of Batman/Evil Batman garbage clogging the shelves unsold. So very few people bought it when it came out and when Todd finally got forced against his will to do more evergreen/comic accurate figures by DC as condition for him being able to keep doing the line, there was a huge influx in demand for AC1000 Superman. Which caused it's price to spike to becoming a $100+ figure.
In the time sense then, Todd's released a couple of additional comic accurate Superman figures (Earth 2 Superman, post-Our Worlds At War Ed McGuinnes/Jeph Loeb Superman, and Electric Superman in Red and Blue colors) but they generally pale towards AC#1000 Superman but mostly, are variations and not a proper regular Superman.
Since then, Todd has done two updated releases of it. First was a two pack with Atomic Skull (who is exclusive to the set) but the AC Superman had a new headsculpt that was critically panned. The second, is the recently released and only now just hitting Walmart shelves Walmart exclusive version of AC1000 which has been retooled to feature a cloth wired cape.
