Does anyone have a good guide for kitbashing? For a few years I've been planning to put together the build I used in GB3. I finally have all of the kits I needed the pieces from, but I didn't have any kitbashing experience. Most the shoulders with ball joints are compatible with modern builds. The waist can be trickier, sometimes they need a ball joint polycap, sometimes a peg, but the peg is the same size so just need to add or remove the polycap. Legs are usually on a similar connection as well. Trouble really is with older kits without any standardized joint systems. Most backpacks will swap now but occasionally youll get one that wont fit directly like the ground gundam backpack.

Any guide that teaches you basic scratchbuilding skills (how to drill a hole, how to saw, how to glue, how to reinforce with metal rods, etc) is also a guide for kitbashing.

if you need to add material you can make "sprue goo" by mixing up some clipped off bits of the runner in cement to dissolve it.

I just built the Leo model from the Gunpla Evolution line, and I have the RX-79 MG version from the 08th MS team lined up but I am intimidated. The Leo is the first model that I have ever built, I had trouble with the feet armor, got a little sloppy with the snips. Should I try my hand at the Real Grade Tallgeese before going up to Master Grade? Give me your testicular fortitude please.

MGs are honestly not that hard, they just take longer to put together than your average HG because they have a bunch more parts.
RGs nowadays are basically mini-MGs, so their parts count is only a little lower but the parts are much smaller.

Most of the parts are primed with Mr. Surfacer 1500 black.

For the lens I ended priming them with white. Was hoping to using some liquid masking so I can spray the colors in but mask is way to watery to do the job. I remove the dried masking and I got some 70° hot water and some soap hoping to wash away the masking residue, yet for some strange reasons the white primer came off as I brushed the part.

I have no idea what's going on and maybe it is because the material of the 3D parts that was expanded by the hot water and the primer lost its grip?
The one piece that I also Primed white that i did not wash is fine- my nail is not chipping the primer in any way

Sounds like an early MG, which is gonna be pretty simple to put together. Easier than a modern RG for sure.
When adding the screws, go 2 turns down, then 1 turn back and repeat until they're fully seated. This helps with forming better threads inside the plastic parts and results in less risk of breakage.

As for the masking, it is just Mr hobby' blue liquid mask. I had to wash it because some of the masking struck to the tiny dips between the 3d printing layer and I can't get them out normally

Mr Surfacer has some issues sticking to stuff other than regular PS, so I would not use it as a primer. MrColor used to make a special resin primer (which you can't find anywhere now), MrPrimer 1000 should work, although for UV resin I would recommend Tamiya primer.

Both of Mr Hobby liquid masks are blue, but one (Neo) is latex and pic related is water soluble. I would only use peelable latex masking for masking painted surfaces. In any case, washing in _hot_ water serves no useful purpose, if the mask is water soluble it will dissolve in room temperature water just as well and if it is latex, wetting the mask will make it harder to peel.

That's why you keep sanding and priming with coarse primer until they are gone. There shouldn't be any visible layers by the time you are ready to paint.

I think the kit is made of pla, the seller said not to expose it to sun light naked and not to mention the pieces are really brittle. I have pieces split in half on me when I drop them on to the floor. Going by the internet people said Mr surfacer primer as good for most 3d parts so maybe it is just a temperature thing.

As for Mr. Surfacer I doubt I will be using it any more. The general spray cans from Mr hobby was banned few years ago over he and I am literally using up whatever stock people have left around the country as I order them online.

Tamiya are still in stores but they don't have primer in black only grey red and white

You can always add Tamiya black lacquer paint to it if you really need a black resin primer. Or you can prime gray, fix the surface defects, then paint black.

Here's a tip, if a part won't go in, don't force it. Koto kits from my experience have some tight joints that will break if you're not careful.
Anyway, just sand it down ever so slightly until it's at a tightness that won't stress the plastic but can still hold.

I made the MG EW Deathscythe not too long ago and it was one of the most brittle kits I've made. The face in particular just degraded and I had to cement and paint it until it looked acceptable I think part of the leg went as well.
When I get home I'll take a picture.

I highly doubt that, that thing is usually worth $57 new. Either it's already built, or the runners have been replaced with trash. Unless it's someone I know/trust or they explicitly outline why they're selling it at such a huge loss, I would be highly wary.

Well, unless there's a very good reason behind why they're so cheap, I would go in expecting the product to not be what is advertised (either that or it's stolen goods, they're selling them without the original owner's knowledge/consent, or some shit like that). At such a price you don't really lose much by buying it.

Speaking of the Epyon itself, it's literally one of the newest RG kits out and purportedly is very well made (that's part of why I doubt it's just some guy who's given up on the hobby and is selling everything to recoup costs, that kit literally only came out a little over a year ago). You shouldn't be disappointed if you buy and build it, though as a first timer you might want to cut your teeth on an HG kit instead since those are easier and more forgiving.

It arrived today, not had much time to progress it outside of work and parenting but this hobby is nice and chill.
I think I need to asses how I tidy parts up, I'm currently cutting parts out a few mm into the sprue and then cutting where the sprue meets the part with a craft knife, but it's not getting the neatest results. I might have to get some small flexible sanding sticks or something if I really got into this hobby.

surely you can just use CA glue for everything that doesn't have a special cement.
although you'll probably want to do some brass-rod pinning on your plastic trees rather than just gluing them to a flat surface.
as for painting trees i have no idea, but lots of boomer train / model railroad type people cover that type of shit if you wanna search around.

The base was MDF (which was a mistake, should've used plywood or something), the rest was plaster, the paint was acrylic craft paint from a dollar store.

I used water-based acrylics to paint and then water-based acrylic washes to weather and all that water got absorbed into the plaster and then MDF absorbed it from the plaster and started bending and splitting and doing all sort of nasty shit.
Lesson learned: when using water-based paint make sure your base is water-proof.

Similar thing happened to me with one of my first dioramas, using some cheap dollar store wooden plaque. Took the paint fine, but used watered down pva glue at one point and the whole thing buckled enough to nearly rip the terrain in top of it in half. You can see the start of it in pic related. Ya gotta be smart with your materials and protecting them, unfortunately I am not very smart.

There's something called "scenic cement", train people use it. I think it's thinned with something other than water, so it can be used to drown stuff in with no apparent ill effects. All greenery in pic related was done using it, awesome stuff.

Spent the last day and and a half fixing this thing up. Melting down spare runner to patch up holes, sanding down ill-fitting pieces so they fit into the places they're supposed to, wet-sanding entire surfaces down after patching up the holes, re-sanding parts that didn't turn out so good after the first attempt, and so on.

Now, you might ask, was it worth all this effort on a $6 Chinesium knockoff action base I bought off of Ali Express? And my answer is, fuck yeah it was worth it, instead of being about 60-70% as good as an actual action base, now it's probably in the 95% range. And since this was my first time doing the melted runner trick, I got to expand my repertoire and improve my technique, and had a blast doing so.

Next on the chopping block are a set of knockoff Action Base 1's ($12 for a triplet). It's from the same manufacturer so I expect I'll encounter the same types of defects. I originally bought these just to see how they compare to actual Action Bases (which cost in the neighborhood of $8-10 apiece under normal circumstances), but if they hold up then they'll save me a decent amount of money in the long run.

Took a friend to get into the hobby for me to finally light a fire under my ass and start building the kits I bought ages ago but haven't touched.

This was sitting around for nearly 3 years, so it's about damn time I put it together. Lot fun this one, thought I put the wings on backwards originally. Wisely got the part separator took to make that a breeze.

Definitely have the itch to put the rest together now. Looking at a whole host of different kits/IPs, though I think my next one will be Strelitzia.

Fuck was building my 2nd gunpla (mg gouf 2.0) and thought I had fucked something up royally because the hips wouldn't stay in place until I realised they needed WAY more force than any scale model or Warhammer minis have needed. I was about to make a captive axle pin so it would still have full movement, I checked the internet but nobody shared my problem so I had to double check.

On the outer part I can just cement the plate to the edges, but since they don't exist on the inside the best I can do is cement directly to the side of the piece, which doesn't feel very stable or secure.

What's the solution here? I still have dissolved runner goo from my display base repair job, do I just spread goo into the gap and slap the plate on top of the goo? Would I have to worry about super long curing times or the goo simply not curing at all?

cut a smaller bit of pla plate, cement to the bottom of the recessed area, repeat until it's elevated enough to give a good base for your final veneer piece.
dont have to be too accurate with the cutting since the intermediate ones won't be visible

Well it turns out liquid masking is way too strong that it peels the primer. So instead of masking the lens I ended up hand brush them after full spray.

Was thinking about panel line and decaling but the 3d parts' panels are too shallow and i don't know what and where to put the decals. I just hope my black undercoat would give some lining effects.

I don't know, I don't have a airbrush so I am more or less testing out just many cans of spray I need with this built- it turned to be a lot when you paint piece by piece. I guess the next time i would do a near straight build than paint in large chunks.
Though I am getting the feeling that fully painted build is something most people with air brush do, not usually by people that only have spray can.

As for the color, white is really hard to use. I am having a hard time getting a even color consistency even on the same part. I think I also screw up getting NATO black for the weapons. The contrast is way to high compared to the most matt white body. But I am too lazy to redo them again...

Thank you. I think part of my problem was not realizing how much force and repetition rubbing it on required. I thought it was be a bit gentler, and started with the largest sticker. The shoulder numbering is a lot smaller and not as easily cut out. I may skip the rest of the stickers just because of the difficulty. The pilot's names are dry rub stickers along a 2mm wide area next to the cockpit.

Good for a first build, but you could improve the nub work a bit. Just cutting the nubs with a knife still leaves visible stress marks. You could look into sanding down the remaining nubs or even purchasing a filing tool like a glass file. Since you have leftover waterslides I'm assuming you have experience building military model kits, which do require more skill and effort to make good. So it's just a matter of applying what you already know and you should do great.

That's just a regular sticker from a Revel Snap Tite A10 Warthog. That kit is garbage and I bought it when I got the Leo, it falls apart just looking at it. I have since purchased sharper snips to replace the Harbor Freight snips that I used for the Leo and used that on the RX-79G. I have zero modeling experience, however; the guide was quite helpful. The Leo is part of the HGAC/ Gunpla Evolution Project and has no stickers.

No, but clearly something is wrong here because both arms have given me trouble. Could be the problem is me, likely so. I will reassess and see if I have the capability of drilling something that small, I have a standard electric drill that seems way too big for the job, even if I had steady hands. don't use a sponge unless you need to remove nubs on curved surfaces. they conform to the shape of the part which is helpful in some situations but also means it'll sand a lot more area than you need compared to an inflexible file or sanding stick if you're just trying to get a nub that protrudes from the surface of the part.

knives are faster than sanding and work fine for nub removal if you do it right but it's easier for you to fuck shit up and gouge the part if your hands slip, so it just depends on how steady/confident you are.

get a nano glass file imo, best of both worlds. the safety of filing but they cut a lot faster than traditional sandpaper.

If you're not careful you can permanently glue the joint. If you're going to fill the hole with something, dissolved sprue would be a better option. Then you can just wait for it to solidify and re-drill the hole at 2/3 to 3/4 of its original diameter and re-thread.

I’ll be frank: I love the proportions of the original RG, to the point that I’m gaslighting myself into picking up MG 3.0. The color distribution and over scheme I think is much nicer, and yes, I did get mine at release (which makes my nubs all the more embarrassing, ill be cleaning him up soon) and my rubber inner frame is still tight. The hands definitely aren’t ideal but I’m not sure I like the 2.0s solution either, outside of them falling apart much less often.

In terms of weight, this guy is the densest RG I’ve ever built. I still see RG Nu as the pinnacle of design, but the RX 2.0 is honestly probably heavier than him. The parts separation and little details are definitely impressive, but I’m not sure if I appreciate it. I mean, it has little grooves and slots all over his body exposing parts of inner frame but they couldn’t manage a decent parts separation for the faceplate vents? Really?

I guess I’d also argue that the equipment is the most secure of any RX or RG I own- the slots are super tight and function in a way that results in barely any wiggle. I’m particularly impressed with the shield.

The articulation is fine. Honestly, the ab crunch is so superfluous and stupid looking they might as well have forgone it. I’ll post a picture of it fully extended, but it doesn’t “crunch,” per se, but “curve” the torso forward, thereby elongating the entire thing. It only looks decent at very specific angles.

They probably could not cut out the face vents because they designed them too close to the top, the plastic would be too thin there. RG Nu doesn't have cut vents either for the same reason, there are three of them and they are too close together. They could have cut the vents if they had just modified the design, but then again, that's how I feel about most of this kit. The proportions look terrible to me and I am not thrilled about the detailing or style. Really, between this, Yokohama, and the PGU, Bandai is just making the RX-78-2 look worse and worse as time goes on. The 3.0/RG1/Diver City was the best modern design. Mostly due to having a larger head than usual, Katoki has ruined head sizing.

I usually like building milestone kits like this just to see how far Bandai has come, but I dislike the looks of this one so much it was an easy pass for me.

If we're getting technical though...not really. The proportions are somewhat similar, but the detailing and styling are quite different. It's nowhere near the similarity of the 3.0 and RG1, which are actually virtually identical.

If you just ignore all the details and squint, sure, they're both just RX-78-2s. But if you look carefully, almost nothing actually matches up. Panel arrangement, greebles, lining, color separation, where the frame shows through. It's nothing like >>11255916 where you can match up nearly every detail 1:1.

Only built a couple HG models so far but going to do some MG and RG soon and saw that they sell metal frames for some of them. Do you think metal frames are worth it? I saw that some seem to have fitting issues.

Want to get the recent Ideon model kit as well but the only places I can find it are basically doubling the price with shipping. Apparently there's a western version coming out in March that I'll be able to order off Amazon but I don't know what that means since every Gundam kit I've built and seen are still entirely in Japanese and if those aren't localized I don't know why an Ideon one would be.

I have no idea what this western Ideon is, do you mean pic related? It's a model kit from Ooshima, a Japanese company that mostly does realistic plastic models (cars, boats, planes) plus some Macross. Not western. Apparently they have a distribution deal with amazon? most Gundam shit is not on amazon at all (except from third party resellers who usually scalp for way above normal prices) but instead goes to other western storefronts like newtype.us, mechawarehouse, gundamplanet etc

I was just confused about why it was only available without needing to import from a Japanese distributor months later and thought maybe some localization was involved.

The few model kits I've built didn't have dual language instructions. I'll have to check the next few I get.
