yeah the vehicles and accessories are great. That's a really good Tornado just by itself, and it'll probably be more easily displayed than the Jakks one.

My dream was always that we'd get some Eggman themed vehicle. Even back before they were announced I imagined that you could repaint that Prime Bulkhead into an Eggman vehicle and it'd have worked, since he's got kind of clunky robot proportions. Paint him grey with red trim and slap some caution tape on him and he'd be good to go

Still waiting to see the accessories/play features myself. If it's just a straightforward bot like the one MMC made it loses a lot of the appeal. A good base mode and a tiny Hot Rod buddy would be an instant buy for me.

Well...Tails as the Tornado isn't horrible, though I really wish he had a bigger head and was stylized to look more like Metal Tails rather than the real deal. Not a fan of Sonic at all, though. I still say this collab would have worked better with an Eggman mech - Tails building stuff is an okayish excuse, but this sort of thing really is Eggman's MO, and it's weird that they completely ignored that here.

I imagine neither Prime nor Magnus get articulation in the hands since the combination starts with the handshake, and while locking pegs ensure the armor is attached around the arm itself, the handshake is key to all this.

Would have been better if the sonic was instead meant to be Metal Sonic, without the gross flesh colored bits that never look right on robots. Then you'd get the cool dynamic of an Eggman mech vs a Tails mech while still being recognizable as the main characters of the franchise

Both valid takes, and both highlighting the fact that leaving out anything related to the dude who's whole thing is making giant robots is a complete mistake. If they're being sold as a 2-pack, they absolutely should have included an Eggman mech of some kind - and yeah, having the robots here be the actual characters instead of Metal Sonic or Metal Tails really is a stupid idea, particularly since mechanizing them literally goes against everything they're supposedly fighting for.

Yeah, somebody forgot that Scramble City were originally meant to be extensions to Metroplex and Trypticon back in the Diaclone prototype days. When they first cancelled Diaclone, they were moved to Transformers and became the crux of Season 3. I should also bring up that the shoulder joint on Tidal Wave looked fragile, but my short experience with the mold means I can't say how bad it is. What I do know about the shoulder is that the piece on the carrier would flex in a very scary way, no idea why they didn't just reuse the joint the og toy used, and just do something similar to the CW connections, but with a tab to lock it in.

Yeah I fucked around with mine a little too much before someone found the issue. One arm in particular wiggles way too much as a result. I haven’t touch the arms much since and I’m not sure if it is salvageable in fixing.

Might just be the photos, but I'm not a fan of the colors for Prima and Solus placed alongside Star Convoy here. ehhh.... I don't think the Bulkhead mold is inherently BAD.... But it hasn't had a single good use yet. Didn't fit the guy it was meant to be at all, and fit Breakdown even worse. Hopefully Heatwave makes it work, it seems from this art he's got pretty significant remolding, might help with some of the awkward shaping around the torso. I'll probably get him just because I like Chase so much and I want him to have a buddy, and firetrucks are cool. Surprised though, I really thought they'd use TFA Optimus but I guess that would be a bit too on the nose?

The leg shutters on Legacy Menasor and the new Superion are just pathetic. They're such a desperate attempt to go "look, the leg component bots do something for the combined mode!"
No they don't. Those shutters could have been just solid flat panels, no springs and less separate parts. The leg bots only exist now to shut a hole that only exist so the leg bots can shut them.

Canon scale for Star Convoy is a little hard to pin down exactly, but with the Micromaster Hot Rod being about the size of a small Deluxe I would say it's pretty close actually. JG1 Micromasters are around minibot size.

This is because bey's board of talented creators actually considered the amount of mass that was going into their conbiner and how each member became part of it. Unlike G1 toonerslop, which completely bullshits every single part of the combination by rescaling everyone to sizes they weren't meant to be, integrating parts that were deliberately separate on the original toys, and then completely making up random details that come out of fucking nowhere, like the turd on top of the shitpile.

Your combiners will never, EVER be good. And it's all the cartoon's fault.

That thirteenth statue is definitely weird. It's mostly Star, but with Ginrai's chest and a different head sculpt that I don't quite recognize, and arm fins like God Ginrai. I can't imagine why it would look like that if it was simply supposed to be Star Prime. That's more differentiation than an honest mistake or laziness would create (especially the arm fins, as that's more work than just doing Star's arms normal).

Like with a lot of other Transformers stuff, it's been 3 different things in 3 different continuities, and probably is slightly different in Japan within the equivalent continuity as well.
In franchise tradition this toyline is implicitly adding shit to the lore just by releasing them, like Star Convoy being retconned into either being literally Optimus's form as the Thirteenth, or him reclaiming that level of power as his final form.

Quintus is a MAJOR character, the main driving plot force in Earthspark.
I'd say Nexus, onyx, amalgamous, and liege are the only actual obscure ones.

Back in the day Rodimus was originally the chosen one of the franchise until he was rejected by children and they CTRL+Z'd everything. JG1 lore is a whole lot of "oh yeah I guess that made no sense so let's make a one shot comic to explain it instead of just saying there was some minor animation mistake" like another Wheeljack coming from another dimension or something to explain why he shows up in some of the later JG1 shows. So who knows what they'll come up with later.

Personally I like to headcanon that Optimus needed to combine the Zodiac with the Matrix of Leadership to become Star Convoy, which is why he partners with Hot Rod there. As far as I know Rodimus never handed the Matrix off to anyone even after he turned himself into a Micromaster, though part of that is just because the Matrix of Leadership isn't treated as important in a lot of the Japanese stuff.

He’s also cheaper, thankfully. It looked like recent titans couldn’t capture most of the gimmicks from the originals anyway, something that I don’t think commander class usually has a problem with. If they actually did something really clever with it like the frame turning Hun-grr into a huge hydra or something then it would actually be a cool gimmick for a toy. I've heard some people praising the Silverbolt frame as being clever because it turns into a booster for his jet, as if that's impressive when the whole thing is just a giant fucking block attached to the back of the jet. At least with Motormaster the trailer was always part of him so it's just the most obvious way to do that team.

If it makes for a more stable combined mode with the individual limbs being less compromised I don't mind at all. CW guys are cool and all but generally the deluxes were pretty middling with a few exceptions and none of my CW combiners can hold any poses without a gentle breeze knocking them over. I skipped Menasor and I dunno if I'll grab Superion but i wouldn't mind that treatment for combiner teams I care more about.

I don't mind some amount of partsforming as a compromise to improve the individual bots, but after a certain point you're not actually designing a combiner anymore, you're just designing a separate big robot with empty slots you plug other guys into. Kind of defeats the whole point. I'll say at least the CHUG ones so far don't really seem that egregious because at least they have Motormaster and I'm assuming Silverbolt actually forming the damn heads and a fair bit of the chest of the gestalt. A lot of the 3P combiners couldn't even do that, at MP scale.

Personal tastes on whether you like those safety hazards aside, Cang Toys works because it isn't limited by strictly adhering to the G1 designs and they add in new team members to make it work which really isn't that different than if Legacy Menasor took the frame and made it transform into another guy on the team or something.

G1 just.. left most of them out. That made it a lot easier. and kids didn't care. But a modern combiner can't do that, so what, each guy who forms a shin also has to have a knee joint? a proprietary thing that can support the weight, clip to a socket on whoever makes up the thighs (possibly more of the same guy if he's the whole leg), AND presumably not be involved in transformation since you'd notice it and it can't come apart or anything.

Hasbro figured, basically just make the combiner it's own figure, that the various limb bots (and torso) plug into.
It's a cheat, but works.
The other way is probably to make the limbs super light and hollow, and that means not very complex

it works okay as long as the 'framebot' has two other modes. one normal NON-hollowed-out robot, and one vehicle or ideally animal. It can be a semi cheat altmode, like if those joints all fold up neatly into a box, fuckit, he's a tape player or something.

but additionally, it would be fucking five times better if there were TWO guys who turn into parts of the frame. Like basically one guy plus his two pals turn into the legs, another guy and his three pals become the upper body, they connect together, and it's ready to go.

I think, maybe, if they used a waist joint as the shoulder, things might work better. The legs would slot into the combiner torso.
Give it an ab crunch so the shoulder can rotate, and go up and down (or back and forth) and have the bicep be the limb-bots torso, with the arms pivoting together to act like literal forarm bones, then attach the combiner hands by pluggin them into the 5mm ports of the hands.

then the torso bot just needs to have the legs of the arm bots sit on top of it, and flip up a chest and head for the combiner, so not a lot to hide.

I would make the torso bot's legs be able to split apart wider (like a reverse of siege springer) and have their lower legs compact some into their upper legs. So torso bots legs become combiner bot's thighs, like energon Optimus.
then their feet would already have all the ratcheting needed for a knee joint, just have them slide into place and lock like a CW combiner.

In the end, it'd probably mean having 3 voyagers and 2 deluxes, but that's still a hell of a lot cheaper than 1 commander and 4 deluxes.

Yeah, they made an all-in-one bruticus that could combine perfectly without the use of any kibble. There was some slight jank, due to it being their first attempt, but it's still insanely impressive, and their Defensor looks to be turning out even better. Seriously, they somehow figured out how to get forearm and wrist swivels on it, despite them being made from two shins smushed together.
They've also got a Devastator in the works, which just floors me with how it's even possible. The arms just, appear out of nowhere. They seem to be one of the only companies out there actually interested in doing any cool combiner engineering

Yeah for sure. I spent a good while just studying their First Aid's arm mode just to get a sense of how their swivel tech works(I think it would be perfect for a choryujin shoulder joint) and it's both insanely clever and surprisingly simple. Wish they'd share some of that black magic around, but unfortunately most collectors aren't really concerned about cool combiner tech as long at it looks good. There was another company, I forgot the name, that was doing their own all-in-one Devastator, but more stylized, and with the leg bots as the arms and vice versa. Seemed pretty cool, but it personally annoyed me a little that they didn't take the opportunity to use Mixmaster's big cement barrel as a megaman arm cannon.
Don't wanna derail by talking 3p too much, I'm using them as a prime example that good combiners are actually extremely possible in the modern age, and they don't even have to be AS complicated as MMC's as long as you can accept a little bit of compromise in the individual bots(which we're getting no matter what) instead of just slapping everyone onto a frame and calling it a day

Yeah Air Raid is OK-ish, wings are kinda stubby though. Slingshot is atrocious, looks like a less cute Hasegawa Egg Plane.

Look, I've got nothing against Wheelie as a character, but this specific 'toy' (and the Daniel that came with Slug) is probably the biggest waste of plastic Hasbro has come up with for a pack-in. He can't transform, he has almost no articulation, and he's permanently stuck in such an awkward pose that he can't even stand up straight. People hated him enough that they pulled him from both of the other SS86 Grimlock repaints, so...why is he back? Surely that plastic would have been better used for Grimlock's sword - the thing people bitched about so much that they eventually caved and packed it in with Swoop - instead of dumping this on us again, right? Why is it always one step forward, two steps back with these guys?

For me, the only way they're getting me to buy a combiner using this stupid frame system is if they make a Megatronia using it, and even then, that's only because I missed out on the original and that would be the only way for me to get her reasonably. I'm perfectly fine with my Combiner Wars dudes and PotP Abominus.

That's only true for the American fiction, which was made exclusively for English speaking markets. Japan outside the original TV show had separate fiction. Transformers was never a US only IP and was always jointly owned.

Half true, american fiction went to the shitter after the movie and pretty much died, while the japanese improved a lot with their "exclusive" shows and books. Marvel came to the rescue later introducing new characters but being comic only, very few actually knew about it.

That can't be said for Japan beyond the trademarks/naming because Japan wrote its own lore from the beginning, its not like they just took an American thing and made it Japanese like Batman or Star Wars. out of the big 3 Combiners Wars teams I think Superion pulled off the look of the combined mode the best. The new one looks great and animation accurate but I can't help but feel like it's kind of cheating with having that combiner skeleton that you just stick planes onto.
