A lot of these "unlicensed figures" and original figures are very fairly priced, come with a lot of stuff, well-engineered and have generally good QC. Look at Snail Shell for instance. There are some fragility issues for sure but the articulation is on par with the best imports. Movable eyes are standard across the entire line so that opens up tons of posing options and meaningful display potential. Then they also come with a ton of stuff.
But to answer the question seriously, it's more about applying good paint jobs, engineering joints properly and giving people the accessories they need to have fun. I think that's where a lot of lines have serious room for improvement. Some of these SHF coming out recently fucking suck engineering wise, look plasticky as fuck and don't come with enough.
