Beats my excuse, I've just been lazy when not at work heh. Jotted down some notes for expanding the lore a couple staff meetings ago, fleshing out a few colours that have not made an official appearance yet. Actual instalments will likely be delayed until spring, whenever the ground is dry again; interior settings for scenes are very limited and lighting options even more so.

Copies of the old Matchbox US troops, though the machinegunner's weapon has been modded some - much of the barrel is gone and I'm not sure if they also altered the rest of it to appear more like a Browning .30 instead of the M2 of the original. Might order a few squads to check out. The backpack contents look suspiciously like that ofthe mishmash cans Dollarama has had for a while, would not buy.

Note that aside from appearing in the back of the photo at the start of the section, the tans are nowhere mentioned on these pages. Goes to show that even toy historians hold the sandmen in contempt.

Very few recognizable toys survive from ancient times, those that did tend to be of high quality craftsmanship and made for the wealthy but there's no doubt that army men have existed in some form as long as there have been armies. Child-sized bows, spears and other weapons have also been found, along with models of war chariots and fighting ships.

From another book unearthed in my research (Mail-order Mysteries: Real Stuff From Old Comic Book Ads) I bring the following pages, starting with an image that is certainly familiar to these threads.

Librarian, part of the job is outreach to the community and in this case to a seniors home, got to choose the topic for a presentation. I probably put more into this particular one than needed but was fun, learned all about the sordid history of Mattel and the Barbie doll and the craziness of the Beanie Babies bubble. Got tapped to do this month's outreach to them again with a technology theme, will probably do a demo of our vinyl cutter and some of my work with it, though that's more on the Lego side heh.

Barbarian-themed sword-and-sorcery and Stone Age fantasy settings are among my favorite genres. I vaguely remember dinosaur vs. Neanderthal sets existing while growing up, but I preferred Wild West ones. The more realistic prints with longer hairstyles, armed with spears and axes instead of clubs, and all-around more Cro-Magnon-Inspired would work well for a Stone Age fantasy setting.

3D printing is one of the services the library offers here; consequently we're given time to practice with it and after a long interval since my last attempt was a dismal failure I've given it another go. Had mixed results with lego accessories so I opted for something more army men-related.

Unfortunately it is somewhat large for the average plastic soldier. The original model was 1/20 scale which I reduced by 20% for my printing; there were difficulties in printing the small pegs to hold the carriage together so I'm wary of going much smaller for future attempts, though I might give it a go at some point. Currently printing a simplified Tiger tank in blue to see how viable an option it is to up-armor some colour factions by this means.

The Blues finally have a tank of their own, no thanks to the Chinese and their deceptive toy listings... working on a second tank design and will hopefully be able to print soon to double their armored support.

I've kept the taller support pieces, figure they'll come in handy sometime. The second tank isn't as good-looking I think, already redesigned the turret some but I want to make other changes from the original for a future print.

I like both but they are definitely representational of different periods.
I like the upper/right one myself simply due to the simplicity and recognizable "Army man" style.

I'm going to rework the second tank's hull to have proper road wheels while moving the snap peg for the turret forward to the middle, will probably also modify the turret some more and widen it, going for a bit of Leo 2 look.
