because the artist didn't know anything about trains
it's particularly strange given how all you had to do to make optimus into one of these old timey trains is his g1 vehicle mode, backwards, with a cylinder on top of his truck bed.
It honestly feels like he just saw the new power ranger train that came out that year and just ripped it off.

as >>11335955 indicated, the fiction had to sidestep this with bizarre stuff. In Japan, they shrunk down in the shells. In the Marvel comics, they had to lampshade how big they were for humans.

Plus there was the question of how they couldn't use their alt modes to travel because where would the large shells go. One issue of the comic pulled this shit where Cloudburst's shell grew gigantic so his shell could drive it.

Doing the toys like >>11335892 would answer all of that

Put of universe it was that scale so kids could fit them into their he-man toys and other various toylines in their imaginations. Transformers shift sizes all the time shrinking down in a pretender shell isn't that weird.

I just refuse to pay what they're charging for such a compromised toy, and since it's.. probably only japan? yeah, but actual tf fiction showed how they struggled to make it work.

It would just make more logical sense that just the head comes off to go in the human shell to do espionage stuff, and be able to drive the vehicle mode.

When not is use, the shell becomes a gun either mode can use.

Plus, from a current toy perspective, there's no way they could do the shell thing at a large size with the transformer inside. It would be a unposable statue or clunky armor or something awkward.

As an amateur designer, being limited by budget can be fun, like a puzzle. On the other hand, they seem to randomly change budgets late on the process after prototypes are already printed, that sure is frustrating.

That depends - regular Rathalos is iconic (it's literally the series' mascot), but in terms of power, Silver Rath is stronger, with the only Rathalos form more powerful than it being the Dreadking Rathalos from Generations. Silver also has a better looking Charge Blade (just look at those colors!) and benefits from not having Optimus Prime's color scheme, making it easier to see him as his own character.
Personally, I'm getting both - I'm a Monster hunter fan, and I'm hoping that if this guy does well enough, we could get more collabs from the series in the future; there's still two more Rathalos recolors they can squeeze out of this (the previously mentioned Dreadking, plus Azure Rathalos), a slight retool (Rathian, the female version of the same species) with four colors of its own (normal Green, Pink, Gold, and Dreadqueen), and so on. Retooling TM2 Megatron into a Fatalis would be easy if they wanted to use a completely different mold (and there's at least three repaints that come with that as well), and so on.

Yeah, this would probably be the best way to modernise the Autobot Pretenders. The main problem with the Autobot Pretenders compared to the Cons is that they don't really stand out. The shells are just human in armored space suits. The inner robots are generic and transform into terrible looking alt modes.

and because they're based on simple figures, the budget wouldn't be taxed too much with trying to recreate and improve each one.

If they really do mean time periods instead of different universes, where could they actually go with this? You can't go much further back than Hearts of Steel unless they're willing to make coaches, sailing ships, and chariots (which would be cool as), or beast modes. So assuming they go forward from HoS, would Hasbro really be willing to license accurate tanks and vehicles from WWI and WWII? Could we finally get more biplanes, a zeppelin, or even a Fulcrum who actually turns into a bomb?

Nah, his hands were somewhat accurate to the cartoon and the tail rotor never really bothered me. The ant mode never really felt off to me, but I admit I’m more used to the current animal alt modes of Kingdom due to the only ones I have besides Inferno are Nightprowler, Waspinator/Buzzsaw, and Sandstorm

It's both. They didn't give him his proper gun, so now he has to rip off his thruster whenever he wants to shoot something - which is a HUGE problem for Inferno in particular, because the main reason he was considered a threat on the show was because he could attack from the air when the Maximals only had Primal and Airazor to counter him. That mistake on the new toy basically neuters him, because now he can either fly or fight, but not both.

I'd much rather they fix the fucking ant legs. and I say that as a guy who has sawed them apart and reconnected them with new ball joints on two iterations of this mold. Siege Ultra Magnus wearing the skin of Galaxy Force Optimus wearing the skin of Nova isn't exactly a good adaptation to me, and I'm not the biggest fan of the Laser Prime, Inferno, or SS86 OP/Magnus molds, but basically everything here is extremely solid >>11336108.
Armada Optimus, Jhiaxus, Tarn, and Magmatron are probably the coolest ones, though I'm also pretty fond of Armada Megatron (+his repaint), Rescue Bots Chase and any G1 minibots like Beachcomber, Gears, or SS86 Bumblebee.

The problem IS still there, though. The way they built him means you still have to take his thruster out to transform him into ant mode, meaning the only place to put the gun is on his back; his entire transformation needs to be redone.

the way I see it, the only good way to do Inferno is to have his arms and legs split down the middle, at least the forearms and shins, and then one half slides down to the end of the other half on a little slidey-channely peg. then an ant leg tip folds out of that part, and now you finally have properly skinny ant legs. It's the only way I can see the MP ever working.

TM2 Megatron is on clearance everywhere because they repacked him one wave after he originally shipped, and he already shipped in good numbers the first time, meaning everyone already had him and on top of that stores then overordered Wave 1 with the repack. On the one hand that's good since it means you can still get a Best of 2022 Tier figure for cheap, but bad since it means Hasbro seem to have cold feed on Cryotek, an obivous repaint literally everyone wants to the point it would print money.

They did new versions of Animated Optimus, Bumblebee, and Prowl, with Motormaster and Wasp as retools. There was also a new Animated Autotrooper, but it was exclusive to a multipack. They also did Prime Arcee, Bulkhead, Knock Out, and Skyquake/Dreadwing but they’re all a bit mixed design-wise

The only legacy prime figures i’d consider to actually be good are cliffjumper and dreadwing/skyquake. My foc Black Grimlock arrived. Bought it on impulse thinking it was some repaint, but it was some 3p toy (planet X vulcan in black, called Plenk or something). It's missing weapons, next conversation for Dino mode and a shin/booster. It has a number of weird issues, tabs are tiny and there's fitting issues all over. The tail also has a frustrating transformation and requires you transform it a very specific way to get the necessary clearance (and just barely). Robot mode is brought down by the tail, thry form the back of the legs and come undone very easily, but the dino mode is pretty solid. All on all? Can't complain for $25, but I wouldn't be too happy paying $130 for one.

This isn't the 3P thread, but I'm guessing you're taking about Planet X's black Peklenc. Sounds like you're missing his sword, shield, and both of his massive cannons, plus the flip-up booster on his shin (mine falls off all the time, too. Seems to be a flaw in the mold itself). Personally, I like him, but as you mentioned, that legs-to-tail transformation is a major pain in the ass. He's still far better than the actual official Grimlock mold he's supposed to be representing - less hollow, the weapons are appropriately sized, his dino tail moves, and, most importantly, he can actually stand in robot mode (my official Fire Blast Grimlock's left leg has always refused to lock in place).
Peklenc's not one I transform often, but he's still awesome looking, and it's cool that you got him for such a cheap price, even if he's missing parts.

Each backer is paying $299.99 (not counting the tax, shipping fee and surcharge, which don't go towards the production values), which comes out to (roughly) 3 Mil just to fund him. (I'm >11336245) You definitely have some good G1 and Movie figures lately, even if the live-action films have been getting a bit ignored of late. Animated and Prime have both had recent figures, but I don't recommend any of them since they all had their designs altered to "fit in" with the G1 aesthetic; even TFA Optimus and Bee. Personally, I'd wait til they're both introduced to Studio Series, as the Hasbro team has heavily implied they wanna do in interviews.

Jhiaxus and Tarn are both major villains from the Marvel and IDW-1 comics respectively, I recommend both anytime (and Dreamwave G1, which speaking of, had the OG version of The Fallen, who himself is getting a Leader class this year!)
Rescue Bots is a cute show, like if you took the silly nonsense plots of the G1 show but with the strong character writing of TFA. I recommend the first season at least.
Magmatron's the main villain of BW Neo, which was a comedic anime spinoff of Beast Wars (which you really should watch, like the other anon said). Pretty funny, moreso than its predecessor (BW II), but ITS successor, Car Robots, is definitely one of the funniest TF shows period.
Armada is probably one of the strongest-written "older-aiming" TF shows I'd argue, but only if you watch it fansubbed as Micron Legend (all TF show fansubs are easily found on youtube). First 20 episodes are a bit meandering, but 21-onwards pick up the pace immediately and it's great. As far as TF goes, this and Beast Wars should be your highest-priority views desu

So yesterday I bought EarthSpark Aftermath, the first B-line figure I've bought since RiD2015 Bludgeon many ages ago.

I bought it on a whim because the design felt interesting enough at first glance, but upon messing with it, it's a bit hard to describe. The actual engineering feels more advanced than what I'd expect from a B-line figure, at least going off my experience with RiD2015, even though neither truck or robot modes hold together particularly well. The actual plastic quality however feels pretty bad, like what I'd expect from a KO figure. Are all EarthSpark figures like this?

I'm just not sure where the line is anymore since we got Magmatron as a retail release, and in the highest price size no less. I think this clamoring for Liokaiser to be retail stems from the fact that it looks like a retail product maybe? I dunno. I like the products we've gotten from haslab (I've bought them all), but I'm also empathetic towards people that maybe can't afford them during the funding window. I'd be more than okay with them getting re-releases, but who knows if that will ever happen.

These were made before the obsession with looking exactly like the cartoon, when toys were actually allowed to have some creativity put into them. Which is good because Sunbow Devastator's cartoon model is pretty ugly.

Can't speak for Hercules as I don't own him myself, but Giant:

Also, these guys came out in, what, 2013? And he still holds up as a set of toys. The fact that SS86's main advantage over Giant is "looks more like muh cartoon" 12 years later is pretty pathetic. Bonecrusher especially looks fucking awful; the robot mode is a stumpy misproportioned mess (seriously, the G1 toy's robot mode has cooler proportions) and the vehicle mode looks nothing like a bulldozer.

Yes, there are more details and linework, because that's the art style of the comic, when compared to the often cheap animation of the cartoon (or Marvel comic). But you look at pics of them in Skybound or Sunbow and they're both different representations of the same thing. They are not an entirely different representation like those 3p Devastators you were shilling for earlier.

I've had Hercules and his Rage upgrade set for some time now, and while I do still like it, he's definitely got problems that leave me a bit cold, mostly in the fact he's horribly unbalanced and can't hold a pose to save his life.

The problem with all the third party Devastator alternatives is that only TFC Hercules and Maketoys Giant really fit the CHUG style collection, with everything else being Masterpiece and Legends scale. I WAS interested in the new SS86 Devastator, despite how bad Bonecrusher looks, but seeing it from the back has left that decision very shakey.

You think I should get Haslab Liokaiser? I bought the IF version but one of his arms got caught in transit before they banned Chinese imports in the US, so now it looks like I'm never completing him. But the Haslab one kind of looks shittier than the IF one. I care a lot about individual bot modes and playability, but I also care about good combinations. IF sucks at the mechanics of combining but the individual figures are all really good (except Guyhawk who I guess I'll never get now.) But the Haslab ones look like giant fat bricks with limbs and Killbison just looks incomplete.

I don't think either one really succeeds completely but is it worth 300 dollars to get a toy that's not going to be very good?

As for your question: yeah, you should get him. Even if you think his components aren't perfect, at least he actually transforms, unlike the IF one where you have a bunch of premade limbs that you slot the bots into. If you own Victory Saber and Deathsaurus, you'll want a Liokaiser that both scales with them and matches their aesthetic. Also, buying the Haslab encourages Hasbro to keep bringing over obscure Japanese characters by showing that there's an interest; unless you're one of those people who prefers 20 million Optimus Prime and Bumblebee releases every year, that alone should be motivation to get him.

Nobody banned Chinese imports. Tariffs were put on them until China acquiesced to US demands - and China caved within a week, so the tariffs have already been lifted. You can get whatever you want from them for the same price it was at pre-tariffs; nothing has been taken off the table.
