So with Bargain Hunt and Big Lots ending this month, and Dirt Cheap ending Dec/Jan and Tuesday Morning being long gone, what does that leave for finding 2 or 3 year old toys on clearance? I guess Ollies, Ross, Marshalls and I guess TJMaxx (their toys have been shit for 5+ years now).

Why are so many discount stores dying? And where is the shit going? Word was Bargain Hunt lost the Amazon Contract and Dirt Cheap lost theirs with Target. Where is that shit going to go now?

These places went out of business because they thought the plague would last forever, which made them spend too much money to expand during the lockdowns. The consequences of companies expecting infinite growth and being short sighted.
A side effect of this expansion is also that they were stealing customers from each other and since margins are so small, they couldn't really last even a year without big consequences.

In short, there were too many bargain stores.

amazon doesn't cater to the people who go to dollar stores. Too expensive even with free shipping, because people who go to bargain stores aren't looking to spend even $20 per trip. This is why bargain stores have miniversions of cheapshit, like toothpastes, even if it costs the same (per ounce) or even slightly more, as the normal sized shit.
So amazon doesn't take sales away from them.

If covid impacted dirt cheap bargain hunt at all, it was the loss of in-store shoppers as people were afraid to shop in person AND amazon/target ordering double and tripple the amount of shit to capitalize on the new flood of online shoppers and then dumping it all to dirt cheap and bargain hunt when it didn't sell.

You can see this very thing at ollies right now. All of then have a wall of black panther and eternals figures thst Amazon and target ordered during covid by the boat load.

We never had Bargain Hunt, Dirt Cheap, and Ollies around here, what did you used to find there? From those youtube videos showing piles of unwanted toys at Ollies, maybe that's where it'll keep going. None of the closeout stores around here ever had stock of clearance toys like that. The Big Lots here are closing but looks like some Ollies are opening. Gonna kind of miss Big Lots, they were the only place I know that would stock those Power Team Elite World Peacekeeper toys.

One theory I've heard is stores keep getting better at managing stock levels so there isn't as much unwanted stuff sitting around. The Wal Marts after Christmas around 2010 were packed with clearance toys, it rapidly dwindled in following years. Would be nice to hear from some employees where stuff goes. Years ago Goodwill would get clearance stuff from Target, but shopping there sucks.

Dirt cheap? Dude you could find everything. Every fucking thing. If target sold it, dirt cheap might get it. I got so much neca, hasbro and Mattel shit there it was nuts. One time I filled a cart with revelations hemans and skeletors for a dollar each and then donated them to toys for tots. Felt good to droo $20 on $400 of toys and then send them on to kids.

That's probably the thing I'll miss most about dirt cheap. I would get things for 90% off and then donate a few huge boxes of toys around christmas. Gonna be a lot harder to do that now.

Some definitely are. In the early 2000s liquidation stores for all kinds of consumer products existed, usually in outlet malls. I’d say 99% of those are gone now.

Dirt cheap was just trash man, i stopped bothering with them years ago. Bargain hunt had a few really solid years but it started slipping off too. And ross is just a damn meme for me, over the past 3 years ive found maybe 3-4 toys i wanted so i dropped that also, id rather just try goodwill.

The employees in-store don't have any knowledge and they are told to wrap all that type of potential collectible toy shit up and send it to a main warehouse, where they list it (overpriced) on their own web-store or post it to EBAY (or similar). You are mistaken. In countries with combined retail (mainstream AND discount stores co-existing), ALL brick and mortar went down during all lockdowns, especially in places that had multiple lockdowns.
Yes, some retailers started overstocking certain things and then got stuck, but this was as true of people with huge footprints (e.g. WalMart/Target) and places like Amazon that have huge warehouses as well as their on-line "stock."
The only point you got right is that discounters have small margins, cannibalized each other and some went out of business. But large retailers also cut in, with Target, WM, Walgreens, Rite AID and CVS, and even large chain grocers like Kroger/Ralphs doing cheap shit, like dollar toothpaste and dollar snacks.

Most states didn't lockdown beyond the first month, so it really didn't affect a lot of chainstores. Only smaller stores, indie places, were affected. Mostly.
Also, it doesn't even take a month for any changes to take place. Expansion happens later, months later, where people were still scared and hoarding shit thanks to the news pushing the plague as the worst thing ever

A year later, people got used to being scared by the media and stopped giving a shit, thus stopped trying hoard shit. So those bargain stores started shutting down, because they were expecting to sell more shit and had too much stock, thus shutting down now.

Yes, the pandemic and the rounds of govt checks made people frontload a bunch of purchases they otherwise would’ve drawn out over years. Stores were doing everything they could to ramp up supply to meet that demand in the face of shortages. Then they realized that high demand was actually temporary and were left with amped-up supply chains and tons of extra stock. That’s what they’ve been working through for the last two years.

I find eBay to have shitty customer support and some shitty sellers, so I would rather buy something like that from a reputable seller/site and that's not eBay.

I once needed a part, an older modem, for an older CPU that i just liked for aesthetic reasons, and that asshole made me go through hoops and forced me to set up a pay pal to buy from him as if he was some diamond mine owner with the only fucking diamond store on the planet. It was annoying as fuck. And overpriced.
