Eh, I prefer the Quintesson origin over Primus, but he can be fun too.
I like designing Transformers too, although I prefer to redesign already existing characters to fit into other series or molds, like G1 Lugnut based on the Orguss Nikick or Animated Smokescreen being a mix of Animated Prowl and G1 Rad

What are the odds they release the other like 5 Junkions from the movie in SS86? They keep claiming they want to have an SS86 for even the most bit players from the movie but that doesn't seem compatible with their desire to finish the line by around 2026. Someone broke it down and they're still technically missing like 30 characters from the movie.

There's a couple really obvious guys they can redeco/retool like Prowl, Gears, Wheeljack. A rerelease of that Quintesson pack would be great too.
But a lot of characters need new molds. I think they've already said 86 Soundwave will be a new mold (about time anyway). There's some characters where I really don't want to see them reuse their most recent mold like Blitzwing. I think Huffer would probably need a new mold too, the Kingdom version is great but it's pretty far off from screen accurate. Some other characters there's no way for them to retool something as far as I know, like Windcharger and IMO Reflector probably wouldn't really work either.

I feel like Windcharger is going to get a new mold since all the other Mini Bots have gotten ones and his mold can easily be retooled into Rook, Tailgate, and Nightracer. I also know they plan on doing Outback and especially Swerve to finish off the 86 mini bots, which would also allow for Oilmaster

Hasbro is pretty dumb about this sort of thing, or they just don't see these as competing figures. I'm half expecting SS86 Prowl next year now. Hope the full 2026 listings leak soon.

I am a Gen X G1er and I'm sick of seeing the same guys over and over. I sure as hell don't need yet another Prowl or Ironhide or Warpath. I have 3 or 4 of each.
There's never gonna be that perfect figure. Blitzwing V4 isn't gonna be any better than 1,2 or 3. If anything it'll probably be worse given how Hasbro's been slacking off. Now's the time they should be doing CHUG's of the lesser characters since people would be more forgiving of those.

I started collecting MP for G1 basically because of this shit. Each MP "upgrade" that comes out is not only typically separated by years (or its different companies competing for the same slot), but even the first go is usually done so well I don't feel compelled to get a newer version unless it's just a radically stylized version of the character I really care about (like an IDW version or something). In the long run I'm not sure I'm not actually paying that much more over time spending like $120 to get a really nice MP version of Ironhide over buying a $30 Ironhide multiple times over several years, and the former almost never lets me down whenever I go mess with it.

I only look to mainline for non G1 shit or super obscure characters now. Magmatron from last year was a treat for example.

I'm waiting on seeing something other than just prototypes/mockups, but one thing I know I don't like about the mockup so far is how her knees are fake wheels- kind of goes against the G1 toy philosophy IMO. Usually they were "start with vehicle mode, then bend it however the fuck to make it into a robot mode even if it looks kinda shit".

I got the figure second hand. That's how he came. I assumed that was just how he was. But yeah I popped the arms off and sure enough much better and correct now. I assume last owned popped arms off playing battle damage and just put them back wrong.

The overall look is on-point and similar to a G1 toy, the wheel-knees just kind of confuse me because it's needless since it's not like the show Arcee has any visible wheels in robot mode. So basically it's a fauxforming part that's there to make it...less screen accurate? Were there really people who were going to get mad that it doesn't look exactly like a prototype from 40 years ago? It could just be an orange or pink joint there. Yeah I know this is autistic nitpicking but it's just...a strange choice, is all.

well yes, the whole point being that it's G1 if it was articulated. It's based off the original concept art, since a lot of the movie toys were based off early art and not the final models. Show accuracy was never the point. Trying to replicate the prototype is.

My point wasn't that it should be screen-accurate, but rather that since the Arcee was never a real toy I don't think it would've mattered if they changed it a bit to have it work as a G1-style toy in both form and function. As in, fauxforming really wasn't a thing then precisely because they didn't give a shit about screen accuracy.

It's probably not hard to make a budget Unicron/Primus toy if you wanted, the question is if its worth bothering. Part of the appeal of the characters is the size in the first place, otherwise basically it's just a ball that transforms into a robot.

Armada Megatron is the current scale for a leader class. There's no way they could do a Primus at the scale without it looking woefully underwhelming. Reisssuing the Cybertron Primus would be more satisfying.

I guess it's down to what you think the philosophy here should be. With the other Missing Link figures it makes sense that they would look identical (or at least nearly) to the original toys, since they were fully-functioning toys already, just adding in PoA and whatnot. When they brought in Arcee the question became if it's "we're making a toy that looks identical to this unfinished prototype toy we made way back when" or "we're going to take this prototype we made back then, and then continue development on it with the mindset of a G1 toy design, then add in the PoA of a modern figure".

It's just such a cool idea, but the work for them is to capture that "cheap" look a G1 toy has that isn't necessarily the same kind of budget shortcuts being taken with current toys. A lot of them were bricks, but they were solid bricks, they didn't have the hollowness/waffling modern toys have (not usually anyway). The transformations were laughably simple like just folding the arms out or whatever but like you said, the hands usually were either shit you just plugged in afterwards (which on ML would just get modern engineering anyway) or they were big hunks that got hidden inside the figure, or they just hung around outside the vehicle because fuck it, etc.

I think the nunchaku is a safe bet with the surge you typically get in the final few days. Stand would be nice but unless something goes horribly wrong with its basic stability like the MPG Raiden or something a stand is just a bonus.

As for the other guys, I have my doubts on any more releases for Victory, but if so I really feel like Road Caesar could just be a normal release as like a Leader+2 Deluxes or something, even though it'd be weird with Star Saber being a Haslab (but same thing happened with RID I guess). Sixshot sells just fine on his own so we can just get him and Greatshot is just an obvious retool. Wishful thinking tier is getting a multi-pack of the Rescue Team made as Core sized figures or so, if you look at the show they were not THAT small that they'd be Titanmaster sized.

We've been seeing Power of the Primes reuses in the form of Topspin and Twin Twist, now I wish we got Battletrap and Dreadwings (Blackwing and Dreadwind) again, though the latter can cheat by releasing them as Hydra and Buster. Maybe next year for the latter two, but they hold up pretty well.

Not that anon but I think Beast Wars/Beast Machines is a "sort of" follow up to G1/G2. Not directly tied to the cartoon or comic but taking elements from both. So you can count it as a sequel series if you want but it's not 100% canon.

Sort of, you should never try to figure out some kind of official timeline to Transformers. G1 itself covers multiple different conflicting versions between the Sunbow cartoon that ended with The Rebirth, the Japanese continuation that ignores the Rebirth (and still technically gets worked on to this day), Marvel comics, the UK comics etc. and Beast Wars is a sequel to that "mythology" with a few overt references to things that actually happened in the G1 cartoon (like in the Starscream ghost episode). But since then there have been multiple other continuations in that same vein like IDW or the recent Dreamwave comics and it's up to you if you want to say all that happened before Beast Wars too (and there's some stories that pick up after the ending of Beast Machines too, including the aforementioned Japanese G1 where Beast Wars II and Neo take place way after). It's all "official" because it's all approved and under Transformers, but it's better to just think of it as a mythology where different versions of the same tale get told.

Sometimes characters in totally different universes get introduced and then get sent back to G1 building on said mythology. For example Bulkhead was a popular character in the Animated/Prime era and he basically got added to G1 retroactively through IDW.

Kiss Players getting as much hate as it does is mostly a huge meme by people who want to fit in. It was so bad they gutted it and ended it early.

Think about it, it wasn't a show, it was an entire TOYLINE that got gutted after a year.
the reason it's such a small portion of the fandom that actively hates it is simply because once the movies came around, the fandom increased ten fold and kiss players was essentially erased, so they never found out about it.

It's one of the numerous end points of lulls the franchise has had, but I don't think it's really standout in that regard compared to similar low points in sales like Return of Convoy or Beast Wars Neo/Beast Machines etc. Similar pattern each time, people lose interest and they have to come up with something that's different enough to capture a new generation of kids.

I actually think fiction-wise Transformers is in one of the biggest ruts its ever been right now between TF One and Earthspark not really drawing in that many new kids, but it's a strange situation because the toys themselves seem to be doing fine because they're cashing in on the nostalgia they've built over decades, whereas a lot of lulls in the past those things sort of dipped and rised together.

Well, in that case, I ordered it. I'm even surprised to see it at such a price from a Chinese scalper who usually sells new releases at an overpriced rate. Ruckus and Bludgeon cost $80. Though I don’t really have a choice—Hasbro has barely been supplying anything to my country since COVID. Cyberverse toys are $30 apiece, leftovers from the first wave of Legacy, and maybe even more expensive than Chinese scalpers' prices for gimmicky ROTB and Earthspark kids' toys.

I always try to find a middle ground for localization like that. If the character's name isn’t a pun or call back to another, then I keep it as is, like Tasmania Kid or Diver. But if their name is supposed to be a pun or reference then I translate it to try to keep it, like Lio Convoy becomes Lio Primal since he canonically isn’t a Prime and スクーバ (Sukūba) becomes Squba since his name is meant to be a pun (Squid + Scuba) just like Ikard (Ika “squid” + Picard)

I remember uh, when Yotsuba& was being translated, they would put out two versions of each page that included Shimauu, one with the name intact (i think for proper nouns it's only proper) and one calling her "Miss Stake" to keep the pun. There really isn’t much of a difference between the American Prime and Japanese Convoy, especially since every leader after Rodimus is not considered a Convoy and never gets the Matrix, implying the two are linked, just like being Prime and having the Matrix. The main issue comes from early localization of Beast Wars in Japan, where it was still assumed that Primal was the same character as Prime as was the case before the tv show, resulting in Takara just reusing the Convoy name for him, which led to every other BW era leader being named Convoy to match him, even though technically none of them are “actual” Convoys, with less powerful Energon Matrixes bestowed by Vector Sigma. Ironically, the Thirteen were never Convoys in Japan because Vector Prime's name was transliterated into Japanese and the others weren’t “established” until after HasTak started using the same names, meaning all of them have always been Primes in Japan

In Japanese G1, Hot Rodimus (Hot Rod) does become Rodimus Convoy as he’s the only JG1 leader to share the Convoy name with the original Convoy. Also, it’s sort of implied Primal is not a Prime since he recognizes the Matrix of Leadership when they find Optimus's body but never says that he also has it. We also meet a Beast Era character who is powered by the Matrix of Leadership and he is specifically labeled a Prime, that being Primal Prime. If you want to consider Japanese Beast Wars canon, then we know for a fact that Primal doesn’t have The Matrix because in his guest appearance in the BWII movie, it’s revealed the thing on his chest is an Energon Matrix, just like Lio, Big, and Fire have, which is explicitly not the same thing as the Matrix of Leadership.
If you really wanted to, you can just separate autism into three diagnoses, Low functioning, Middle functioning, and High functioning. For the longest time High functioning was known as Asperger's but that fell out of favor because it is an awful name, it was named after a Nazi, and all of the symptoms are just less severe versions of symptoms of lower functioning autism, making the separate diagnosis kind of pointless.

Honestly it feels like Japanese G1 has over time really deemphasized the entire status of being a Convoy, and their lore has expanded so far beyond the original Matrix of Leadership that being a Convoy doesn't even seem all that powerful. Like in regular transformers terms it's strong yeah but I guess the Matrix of Leadership is only one of several Matrix..es (Matrices?) and even Optimus in his Star Convoy form can beat like one Vok when there's tons of them out there (I assume just sitting around at the edge of space laughing maniacally to each other).

We really didn't know how good we had it. No matter what the current "flavor" of the toys was at the time, there was almost always something interesting happening during those years. Now everything just feels like "masterpiece lite", while getting progressively smaller, yet more expensive, and with worse alt modes.

I think the only thing post 2017 I'd really applaud were some of the "-izers". Paleotrex or whatever was absolute peak. Very weird, unique, and fun bot to jam in a squad or bust into pieces and rebuild as a monstrosity. The Siege Lambo mold was pretty solid, too, but nothing special, and kinda played out by the millionth repaint/retool, but still a fun Transformer with a good alt mode, which is a low bar but there it is.

And despite most people railing on Power of the Primes, I think it had some winners, if only because it was carting out leftovers from previous gimmicks. Slash, Beachcomber, and Tailgate are perfectly fun little dudes that make me miss core/legends/whatever you wanna call it class.

Hasbro saw fans sperging out over turd party legends class shit that cost an arm and a leg and figured they could beat them at their own game. Turns out the formula to keep people's wallets open is cartoon accuracy and ankle tilts and very little else.

I literally never saw that complaint. In fact, a lot of people WANTED him to look like IDW because back in 2013 IDW was fairly popular and was viewed as a breath of fresh air to the franchise, as much as /tfg/ would hate to admit.

Also WFC is absolutely not tooner. They still took liberties with the cartoon designs (see: Cliffjumper getting more red on him, everyone having actual sculpted detail etc) which was for the better IMO. I'd argue the closest thing to tooner in CHUG is SS86, largely because it transitioned from "overflow line to get all the G1 guys out without flooding the main line with G1" to "let's redo the G1 guys AGAIN but with ugly blue windows".

I know it was unstable as fuck and it was just the same molds over and over, but I loved the playability of "everyone can be a combiner" of CW/PotP and hope we'll get another go at something like that eventually. I think combining that with what they've learned doing the recent frame combiners for more articulation/stability would lead to top toykino.

The concept was sound, the execution was just poor. If the combined forms had better proportions, the overall quality was generally a bit better, there was slightly more mold variety, and Hasbro hadn't been a little too liberal in their reinvention of some of the G1 combiners (Blast Off being a jet, replacing one of Superions limbs with a helicopter, etc), it would have been a great line. Having a massive selection of limb bots you could attach to any of your favorite combiner torsos is a fun gimmick, but the end result needs to be good to make it worthwhile. It isn't really fun making your own combiner if it's practically guaranteed to be unstable and barely stay up in any pose that isn't a basic standing position.

Objectively the best version of the character but it's practically by default. It was great to get a new toy of the guy and I seriously doubt we'll ever get a better version but I honestly think he's at least in the bottom half of the Commander classes I've handled. But Commander class in general has been the most consistently good IMO so it's tough competition.

He's a leader. I know some goons said he was voyager sized but he's the same height as most G1 leaders. But he's leader size and has good plastic (cannot be said for some hastak figs) and diecast. I'm honestly not sure which one I want. I never really cared about cartoon accuracy when it came to G1 stuff (I started with Beast Wars and never even saw all of G1 until almost a decade later) and I kinda dig the orange (certainly makes her more unique than other Arcees)...but the face on the cartoon colors one looks way better even though it's the same sculpt...but the point of ML is to have updated versions of the original toys, not the same ones we've been getting for decades...but Arcee never actually HAD an original toy beyond a prototype...

I don't think so - they haven't done alternate faces on any of the previous MLs so far - both Optimus and Bee retained their toy faces. It's most likely just a combination of the camera angle and the fact that Cartoon Arcee doesn't have painted lipstick that's making her face look different.

Iron factory is still way too small for those haslabs, and it’s combination is basically 80% fake parts, it looks good because the components barely need to do anything at all for the combination. Personally, tfc hades looks much more interesting, but unfortunately it’s even more out of scale with star saber and deathsaurus

I think you can definitely have both, I mean have you SEEN the thighs on ML Arcee? woof. Outside of the arms it looks like she transforms very similarly to the T30 Arcee too, which makes sense since Hironori Kobayashi, who designed that figure, is the guy in charge of Missing Link. He's a leader in terms of engineering but he is most definitely not leader size. Actually, that's not fair. Romulus has far more going on in terms of engineering than we've ever gotten at leader class.
And foot extenders aren't going to help any. The entire toy needs upscaling to work with SS86 Optimus.

Romulus is a fantastic figure btw. Just want to make that clear in case it looks like I'm shitting on it. I would 100% buy a NewAge Optimus scaled to Romulus.

I don't get all the people pushing the Iron Factory over the TFC Liokaiser as an alternative to the Haslab. They're both off on scale but IF works way worse in that regard. TFC Leozack is about as tall as 86 Prime which is a bit too tall vs the IF being an ultra manlet that's like half his size.

In all seriousness, I do think the ML can make a really good modern Arcee with just some tweaking. The main problem that's always plagued her, unfortunately, is that the cartoon reduced her car bits to a tiny little backpack and left the rest of her as just "sexy woman robot", which doesn't really work in real physical space. But a lot of people expect her robot mode to look like the cartoon, so while doing her shoulders like the ML works very well, I'm certain there will be people that will bitch about it if a modern Arcee figure did the same thing.

I genuinely believe the only good Liokaiser toy was the original, which sucks. My only hope is for either MMC to tackle it sometime in the future or to try and psychically manifest a Missinglink version. Neither of which are likely to happen any time soon

If you smoothed out some of the shapes, collapsed some of those parts in, yeah actually, I think it could. The most egregious boxy part is probably her chest, which is one of the few pieces on the 86 that actually does transform to the front of the car. You wouldn't get a toon accurate Arcee I guess but that was always a fool's errand except in the most extreme MP-scale panelformer attempts at it.

I don't mind sexy lady robots, I just hate lazy toys. The upcoming Solus Prime is one example of giving a bot a feminine shape without just being lazy and sticking the whole car on her back. A low concept aesthetic IS a shit aesthetic. This isn't something someone can teach you. You need a soul to understand. CW Liokaiser might have the usual CW shortcomings, but the sculpt work, color selection, and Drillhorn's (I believe) bespoke drill horn is at least 3 times more soulful than IF's work. One thing that really bothers my autism about a lot 3P combiners is that they never even put the combiner head in the chest/center guy, something at least the Legacy Menasor/Superion knew to do. It might be just an illusion but it still gives some minor impression that the middle guy is actually necessary. Instead you get things like basically all the 3P Menasors having Motormaster transform into a cube that slots into the back of the combined mode, to the point where it practically should just be a separate figure.

Not at all anon. I just said a lot of them, because quite of few of them do do that. Usually companies nail Devy (I can only assume him being 6 members maybe makes the engineering easier) and of course I love what MMC did with Bruticus and Moon Studios Raiden. But for example FT/Zeta Superion and basically all the Menasors did the thing where the chest bot turns into a cube that fills out the back of the combiner. I don't even mind it that much because I get wanting better stability for the combined mode and some designs like Menasor it might literally be physically impossible to have that perfect combiner, it just really bothers me that some of them can't even have the head be inside the chest guy to at least preserve some of the illusion.

Current Decepticon roster, I cut back a lot on some figs I didn't care much for either because of a package refresh or the mold just being bad. But it was also in part because I got a really sweet deal on MP-52 and needed to buy it. My final stunticon will be delivered soon also.

I think it's the tabs on the smokestacks that people are breaking.
I guess I can see how? If you try to force the double bent leg to peg in at the wrong angle maybe?
Where I see something going wrong is trying to unpeg the elbow assembly from its spot. It pegs in in like three different spots and rotates out at an odd angle

Man I get the need for kid-focused lines, but the variance in quality of these is all over the place. Like you have these two new looking dudes in the top left/bottom right that look really cool design wise, I mean hell the bottom right dude is pretty much a modern Cyberjet transformation wise. But then you get the perma-locked arms without any elbows. I mean shit it kinda looks like the white and blue parts are two pieces attached together via a mushroom peg, so they could've easily engineered a joint in there if they wanted to. If a $5 toy from 1995 can have balljointed elbows then certainly a $10 toy from 2025 can as well.

And that's not getting into the random-ass retooling of a movie toy from 7 years ago sticking out like a sore thumb

You vastly underestimate the average intelligence of the current generation of kids and teenagers. I teach high school Art and you wouldn't believe how many times I've had to teach the kids how to hold a ruler in place properly in order to create perfectly straight lines. The combination of budget cuts in education, no child left behind policies, and the spread of social media has had serious negative impacts on the current generation of kids and unfortunately toys have had to adapt to match.

use paints that don't need thinning. most paints that need thinning already contain too little pigment. if you thin them you will need like 10 coats.
just get vallejo stuff. yeah way more expensive but you can get everything done in 1-2 coats even without primer

That's entirely achievable without faking the entire combined mode, though. IIRC CW Bruticus was one of the sturdier ones anyway, at least once you give him proper feet. I have Megatronia (same base torso mold) and she's pretty stable.

I like that Ironfist got the appropriate retooling but I still think Siege Hound would have been a better base. I also would have preferred toy colours over IDW but either way he looks good. Carnivac is disappointing though with the visor tampo.
