These two showed up today. I haven't cared about Naruto in ages, but I bought it for the same reason everyone else did - that modernize Spittor/Diver mold that Gamakichi's sporting. I also happen to think 9-tailed foxes are awesome, so that made picking up the 2-pack here a little easier to swallow. Only a little. While I have no idea who Gamakichi is (never saw past Arc 1 when it was airing on Cartoon Network), I do know that Kurama takes his name and beast mode from the actual Kyūbi that was sealed inside the main character at birth, hence why the robot mode looks like Naruto himself while the beast mode resembles the demon fox.
Kurama/Not!Naruto comes with two different kunai weapons that can tab onto his hips when not in use, as well as several blast effects - two for his feet, as well as both a small energy ball and energy disk that I'm assuming are attacks he had in the anime/manga; the attack effects have both a 5mm peg and a square peg hole directly next to it, allowing you to let Kurama hold them in robot mode (his right hand opens up and has a square peg, which plugs into the peghole while the 5mm peg sits in the palm of his open hand). The 5mm pegs also slot into peg holes on the bottom of his Kyūbi mode, and the instructions actually show that you can have him hold his kunai with his robot hands and mount his energy effects to his extended fox arms at the same time, giving him a four-armed Shiva-esque look. Kurama's left hand doesn't open, and his index and middle finger are permanently extended in a 'jutsu-summoning' pose that I just KNOW someone out there is going to exploit for nefarious photography.
Gamakichi only has two accessories for himself - a wakizashi and a scroll, both of which have small pegs on them that can plug into holes on his back when not in use in either mode. I'm not a huge fan of the way the frog legs hang off of his hands (they attach to his knuckles, rather than his wrists), but it is what it is.

Beast modes. Kurama is just a Cheetor (or is it Tigatron?) retool, so there's not much to note about his transformation, other than his really long front limbs. His kunai can stay mounted to his hips in this mode, too, so at least he has weapon storage. His nine tails are on balljointed segments (3 tails per segment) and can be repositioned a bunch of ways.
Gamakichi's transformation is pretty basic and is nearly identical to the original Spittor's; the robot head is even still visible inside the frog's mouth, though it no longer has a springloaded mechanism to extend it as a tongue. As stated before, both of Gamakichi's accessories can be mounted to peg holes on his back, though he also has peg holes in his palms so he can hold them in frog mode, as well as a hole in the roof of his mouth so he can hold either item securely with his jaws.

They're decent enough - probably more enjoyable if you're actually a Naruto fan with a lot ore knowledge about the characters and their abilities than what I have. As for lore reasons why either of them are now transforming robots...yeah, I've got nothing. I'm sure I can find some creative uses for the energy effects, though.

I was adamant on skipping the upcoming combaticons because the frame combinations are boring, and the core bots sucked anyway like with ALL of the aerialbots…but if all of the combaticons are this good, then it’s going to be hard to refuse. Watch them turn brawl and vortex into retools lmao

For all of the issues with frames, I do think they allow for the individual team members to be just that much better since they don't need to be built around the common combiner engineering like with Combiner Wars.

Sure, problem is I still think every aerial bot looks abysmal, and I was willing to buy them even if the combiner sucked because a team of jet autobots is just cool. About half of the stunticons were also compromised for some reason, and most of the constructicons still share some of the weird proportions of their combiner wars counterparts. I think it really hasn’t been as successful as it should be so far, but lets hope bruticus is the best one yet

There's UW Baldigus, but he's pretty hard to track down these days and quite frankly the combined mode doesn't really hold up. Looks nice but can't really hold any poses.

It looks cheap to me, I really don't like it. It feels like a lame way of mimicking cartoon cels rather than just, being what it was supposed to represent: metallic faces.
SS86 Optimus' head is, IMO, ruined by the light gray facepaint way more than the inaccurate mold.
Only case where I've tolerated it was on GenSelects Galvatron (the Marvel/toy colors), since that was a very dark gray, that's wasn't really like metallic silver in the first place.

in 85 The toys, Season 3 and the Movie were all being created at the exact some time (July-August 1985) many of the toys went into production with finalized colors that the film and show runners didn't get to see until they were very far into production as well. they were originally were going with the purple but in play testing with kids there was a common complaint that the new three bad guys "all look the same" so they then changed Galavtron from purple to Grey, by the time the Sunbow teams got a hold of it the movie was near complete and they already had the first five episodes of Season 3 finished. Thus this oddity of colors for Galvatron

Hear me out: Autobot and Decepticon combiner teams that transform into musical instruments.

Autobots have a rock and roll theme (Guitar, Keytar, Bass Guitar, and an Amp as limbs, with a Drum Set being the torso-bot) and Decepticons have a classical/orchestra theme (Violin, Tuba, Bass Drum, and a Bassoon as limbs, with a Grand Piano being the torso-bot)

They'd be Legends/Core Class like Legacy Volcanicus so that their alt-modes scale with larger Transformers and other six-inch action figures, using them as props for band-ensemble poses.

NTA but I personally don't like mass-shifting because it's incredibly un-toyetic. A gun-mode Megatron might as well either not transform at all or have another alt mode (like a tank) and just come with a gun accessory that you can give to other figures; you can't reasonably display him in gun mode alongside the other Decepticons without it looking silly.

I think they're both pretty awesome, though Bone Shaker really steals the show for me. I really hope they make more of them if they can keep up the quality. It's definitely not the law at play, as they could easily make his back gun barrel a faux-alt mode kibble, and have the gun mode actually have a blaze orange blast effect permanently affixed to the barrel, making it completely compliant with laws.

It's that they don't want him to be a gun anymore because of the optics.

The closest we're gonna get is an Anti Aircraft gun like has been posted, or a jet with a decent gun fan mode. Otherwise it'll be a tank.

Shows were god awful but the toys were selling fine with the only reason everything stop being made was to pivot to the unexpected movie production, GIJoe was suppose to be first but the Iraq War soured that idea so it was stalled and Transformers got bumped from being the second film Hasbro planned for around 2010 to the first for 2005 and later kicked down to 2007. A major reason they wanted to do GI Joe as a film first was because Transformers was doing so well in 2003 and Joe was still struggling to keep it's footing.

Failure in your dreams or something? The toys sold and kids liked the shows. Hasbro nameslapping the characters had to do with keeping the rights for those names, besides transformers always reinvents itself and makes new interpretations of characters anyway.

Toys sold like shit what are you talking about? The entire fanbase reviled them when they first released, sacrificing everything that was gained from beast wars and trading it for bricks with gimmicks that aren't impressive or don't do jack shit. Literal toddlers (probably you) were the only ones buying this abject failure of a toyline and now those same toddlers only represent a small vocal minority of the fanbase. Bayformers ironically is what saved the franchise from reaching rock bottom by returning it to the foundations that G1 previously set. That's because of Armada. Armada sold so well they had to make Universe to fulfill the demand retailers had.
Simply put, look at how many releases there were in the UT years vs Beast Wars. BW did well enough, but in the UT years we had about double the amount of toys on shelves, and more at higher prices.

I worked retail during this time.
The collector fanbase went for stuff like 20th anniversarry prime, alternators, The Commemorative Series reissues and, like was mentioned, universe.

Armada sold *gangbusters*

as someone who was working retail at the time, I hear from younger people "the shelves were always clogged, it didn't sell" well I can tell you the shelves were clogged *because* they sold.

The amount of transformers being sold and rotated through was *insane*

Those minicon team packs were at a sweet spot price point and hasbro reps (which used to visit stores to make sure they were stocked properly) never wanted a bare shelf.

I kinda wish we got an entire series depicting Orion Pax's journey to becoming Optimus Prime. Like, a slow, gradual growth where he gains the traits that define Optimus, such as leadership, courage, and wisdom, all tempered through his innate goodness over time.
I know TF1 exists but I feel that was too quick.

On a different note, I want to think the eventual Titan Nexus Prime would come with an Enigma of Combination that attaches to the chest like an Energon Star, a gimmick the original toy has for being remolds of existing Energon combiner parts. Also, which sword do you want for Nexus Prime, the Chaos Blade, Omni Saber, or Cyber Calibur? I can guess the Cyber Calibur would be his only logical inclusion as it can give his components weapons to wield.

If you want to have a show where Optimus Prime is constantly flashing back to his younger days when he had to learn these lessons, sure, but again that's a rehash of existing shows.

There's a reason every time any show, or comic, or game has focused on his time as Orion Pax, it's a flashback, or a short segment near the start, or a mini-series.

It's the same reason 99% of stories about George Washington isn't gonna start with his brother getting killed, even though that's a pivotal moment in what made Washington the way he was. Because stories are no biographies. A transformers show, or comic, isn't going to be about slowly getting to watch a bot become the great bot we all know and love.

TFone tried that for both him and Megs and it did poorly, despite being pretty good outside of that.

It may make for good world building, but it makes for bad storytelling.

Marvel Hot Rod was probably exactly what you're looking for then.
he's off on Nebulos during the pre-movie era, and when he's introduced, he basically picks a fight with Optimus. Kup has to calm him down. He never becomes Rodimus in the main timeline, instead there's a different timeline (the UK comics) where he's rodimus but his obsession with finding galvatron leads him to fail as a leader, getting the war to start up again, and ultimately got caught in a time vortex, and had to fight to preserve his own timeline, and his ultimate role was revealed to be basically the anti-unicron soldier that would forever seal Unicron *within* the matrix, and then protect it.

Split in half makes sense for Sideways to reflect the original, but you could justify it through the weird convergent evolution that Planet X symbol looks the same as the Decepticon logo. But the strange bit is Excellion's box has a Decepticon logo next to his name even though he's two levels of Autobot and has an Autobot logo on his shoulder. That can't be final.

and the only Beast Wars Leader class was Megatron, even counting the OC Fossilizers the BW reps in all of Kingdom just barley hold a 50/50 split with all the G1 guys in Kingdom... for the mainline, you add exclusives and they get fucking stomped. Generations Selects had 1 BW rep and it was Transmutate. If you get rid of the OC Fossilizers Kingdom is just Earthrise redux.

Go rewatch it it was, the end of Season 1's arc was Optimus gaining the traits of actaully being a good leadership and learning some wisdom from it. For fucksakes the very first episode he tell Ratchet he doesn't think he'll amount to anything because he can't even lead a four crew of drillers. Season 2 was him getting tempered with responsibilities and facing his past who didn't think he grow up to being anything noteworthy, Season 3 was it all coming together and becoming a True Prime Matrix and all.

Did you watch this show at all? All the events that lead to Megatron's resurrection in Season 1 was because Prime sucked so bad as a leader everyone but Ratchet deserted him and he made Sari cry. And that's just the biggest time he fuck up, most of season one was him being awful at handled his own team.

Optimus is very insecure in the leadership roll in S1 his apology to the crew letting his fears and doubts effecting him near the end of the last episode of S1 is fanatic and the way he changes Optimus tone to reflect that he is growing into his role as leader in S2 was noticeable, David Kaye would have been a great Hot Rod. Go watch/rewatch it, it's a good series.

It's interesting that most Transformers animated has a send off ending that feels complete. From G1 to Earthspark it seems writers get the chances to send off their shows. Compare that to other franchise where they just end one day (GIJoe, D&D) to others that just end of cliff hangers (Reboot, Green Lantern TAS) it makes me wonder why there seems to be an effort that Transformers shows get their happy ever afters.

I feel like Hot Rod and Orion Pax have arcs that are both the same but different. Both are about rising to leadership, but Hot Rod is about tempering himself and being less of a dick while Orion would probably be more about him growing a spine and actually learning to stand for the freedom he believes in.

Is describing Dreamwave's War Within Prime. 1 for 1. and there is nothing wrong with that, it leads to the story just being nonstop compared to what came before to at worse dismissed because it's another telling of a familiar story.

To make matters worse to even make anything that feels new or "original" demands getting so far from the source you get things like Beast Machine and that was a bridge to far for most fans and no new comers were brought in from that.

I guess that's to say a 40yo IP runs out of room to tell stories that masses will read and it seems to become hard to do anything with it short of letting it die to bring it back later to retread materials, assuming it can be brought back.

Stranger still is all these store exclusives like Galaxy Shuttle, Dirge, Ramjet, Cosmos, Origin BB, and Crasher just showing up mainline with no changes to the toy just packaging.

Finally got a chance to look over the Carnivac pics. I remember reading that he was just a repaint, but the toy has some retooling. Aside from the weapons, the face and cockpit hatch (which doesn't seem to use rubbery material). No idea if the rubber in the wolf mouth and inner head is still present.

yeah, that's why you keep getting push back
that's just not optimus.

You don't go from timid bookkeeper to stalwart leader by being unceremoniously shoved out of a priveleged class into the wilderness, and having to survive.

You become someone else entirely. That's literally mirage's bio from G1. In g1, Orion was naive, and the war came to his shores, and he lost everything, and was rebuilt. Optimus feeling *guilty* for not taking a stand and vowing "never again", him feeling *obligated* to protect others is what makes him the hero he is.

Captain America handled it great. Steve Rogers was cap even before he got the powers. It's why he was chosen.

If you want to tell a story about a weak little optimus that keeps failing and failing and theoretically one day will become the hero, but not today, today he gets crushed and has to just deal with it, fine, but it's not gonna feel like Optimus, it's gonna feel a bit like fetish fic.

This is what ruined Arcee.
"What if Arcee was actually a murderhobo" ruined her for IDW. Then they tried to fix her with "what if she was secretly galvatrons twin"

Giving Arcee plot reasons to make her character into *something it's not* doesn't work.

They did this with Elita 1 a couple times too, and it's failed.

The reason we end up with new "main characters" in shows is not just to sell new toys, but also because there wasn't an existing character they could place into that slot.

RID 2015 strongarm is a great example. They needed a no-nonsense female disciplinarian. Given the small amount of female autobots... that necessitated a new character.

This is *also* why new characters in the generations line is somewhat rare. They need media to flesh out the characters. If it's a new version of an existing character, we already KNOW them. This is what TFauthentics was all about too.

TL;DR: IP like Transformers survives 40+ years because they create fun characters and stick to it without re-inventing them for each iteration.

While Orion Pax is a bookish, incredibly naive yes-man who needs to learn to express and assert himself, Hot Rod is a street smart, competent fighter who needs to wisen up and stop being such a standoffish, closed off dick to everyone around him. Both of them embody the traits the other lacks.

Is Cybertron really much better than Galaxy Force?
I watched the latter, and thought it was chill. Lot of padding though, and I missed the deeper writing of the first two anime; but I still liked it for what it was. Having an entire epilogue episode where they just showed off where everyone was going was such a nice hammy touch, lol.
But I did check on the dub sometimes, and the few times I did, I really disliked it. The first ep being abbreviated, Vector Prime and Master Galvatron literally going to the phantom zone instead of "battling in the afterlife" like originally, and honestly just really hating the dub voices desu (every line is delivered in the same exact cadence, I'm shocked that it's actually Beast Wars alumni).

Depends. Classic G1 Omega was basically the equivalent of a combiner in size and strength, but modern media buffed him to citybot level.
I like the idea of him being stronger than Metroplex, like a Titan buster. He's the Autobot last line of defense after all.

Not really. Many sites don't collect taxes to certain regions if the government doesn't request it from them. I can only assume they didn't consider territories as part of the United States, so tax wasn't collected. I googled a bit, and some posts mentioned that shipping to PR was much higher, I can only assume they had it categorized as international before, but changed it to local at some point. Currently, an order to PR only costs 7 dollars to ship, previously those costs were around 30.

What do you mean by "jobbed" because Omega got fuck up so bad in Secret he didn't talk right ever sense and his round two fight didn't go much better, but he at least took care of that bug.

That all said it's like >>11358643 noted and writers just did weird shit without concern for power levels. Omega never took out Devestaor in a clean fight but Soundwave's cassette clean up Devy he was old newspaper to then be further beat down by Perceptor of all robots.

I think Sky-Lynx is one of the very few guys that didn't get smacked around by someone way below his power level nor did he do any insane shit like take out Typticon.

There were some clear bias and favorites in the OG show that's for sure, the Aerialbots showed up very frequently since their introduction being featured more in S3 than the newer combiners like Preadaking by a very wide margin.

Yes, he's part of a TF: Cybertron-themed capsule that'll be exclusive to Walmart, kinda like Velocitron, Toxitron, and the Star Raiders all were. This assortment will also include Excellion (who was also shown at Toy Fair), Skywarp (who will presumably be a repaint of Voyager Cybertron Starscream, rather than anything similar to his original Cybertron toy as a repaint of Thundercracker), and some leader class figure which hasn't been confirmed yet, and maybe a couple others. I hope these will be easy to find, but considering Walmart didn't even bother to put the Thundertron three-pack out on store shelves, it feels like they're sorta giving up on Transformers (can't really blame 'em since both Earthspark and TF: One toys have shelfwarmed so badly), so I'm not optimistic.

The flap for the legs/ super mode arms is very tight on many copies, and there's a high chance of breaking them due to thin plastic. There was a lot of talk back when it came out. Shock oil can help, but you're better off dissasembling the leg (look up a video since it's a bit tricky) and using sand paper around the stalk. When you feel the flap can move easier, stop.

What does anyone think of the best version of Alpha Trion? So since we know Vector Prime would be a package refresh for Age of the Primes, I bet some people passed on the Legacy United release just for the updated Cyber Key bearing his Prime Master sigil that he'll get in the refresh. Still a good figure overall, but that empty circle that had the Autobot symbol in the original version should get filled in with his Prime Master sigil, tampo'd like the other Artifacts, of course.

Both Shadow Striker and Strongarm are good toys. The issue with shadow striker is that she was an obvious Sideburn pretool and doesn't look anything like her Cyberverse incarnation outside of her head. Strongarm is great, but she's a minor retool of a mold that had been used for 2 other fembots previously. People also complained that she's too skinny because the RID2015 artstyle made her a little bulkier than the average fembot.

Also you can adjust Shadow Striker's chest to give her a gigantic metal uniboob.

Same. I've been waiting decades for him, and this...is what we got. I'll take it (the odds of them remembering he exists again are slim to nil), but it really is kinda lazy that they went with a repaint/slight retool rather than giving him his own mold like they did the other Pretenders. I was hoping they'd at least blend some of his shell's details into him like they did the others - maybe some patches of grey fur here and there, or let him have his cool pauldrons and armored doggy vest.

The actual phrase is "partial tooling"
I.e. something that uses some of the old mold (tooling) and some of a new mold entirely (not a reshaping of existing mold, i.e. retooling)
The key difference is usually where pins are, how joints work, etc.

In my fanfic I'll never write Hot Rod is the protagonist and Optimus is this distant figure he admires for his leadership. He's a hothead Terry McGinnis type that wants to prove himself, but once he actually meets Optimus and fights alongside him he learns about what real leadership and responsibility actually look like.

Whole arc is like that, until Optimus dies and passes on the Matrix, and the Autobots are totally rudderless. So he gets thrust into leadership before he's ready for it (because nobody ever is) and has to take what he's learned and rally the Autobots again.

Last arc is him getting into the cosmic elements of the Transformers Universe with the Autobots behind him, along with a resurrected Optimus, and Optimus being proud of how Hot Rod surpassed him as he leads the unified Cybertronians against a final threat and towards a new future.

The biggest issue with Star Upper is making his boxing gloves work for both modes. The art cleverly shows that the Kangaroos arms merge into his robot mode arms (you can see them next to the arm and the animal arms end on the robot elbow), but with how animalformers do at retail, I don't know if they're willing to make a brand new toy for him.

Writers need to stop kneecapping him becoming the leader. He started fine off fine being responsible for Optimus' death. A few of the episodes about Rodimus being a shaky leader that feels he can't live up to Optimus are good. Nah Hasbro is just been really messy with there releases these last 5 years. Look how long it took to get Legacy Menaosar made, look at how they have handled Soundwave, Blaster and the cassettes. Back in 2012 it took a few months and you had WfC Soundwave, Blaster and eight disc bots, in 2015 you had Menaosar and Superion in less than six months. Now it took what? Two? Three years? To get 5 Stunticons made and release, and to have a complete G1 cassette team Soundwave you have to buy from 3 series in a span of 4 years and double dip on Soundwave?

It's just a fucking mess anymore over there and they either can't or don't do what Mattel does with MOTU or even the Joe team at Hasbro which is just follow a mostly straight set of drops getting the OG figures made first before deep diving on the broader sources. The TF team keeps weird whiplashes between all these different series without anyone of them just taking stage. The Age of Primes is the closet we have ever been for consistency in the line since Earthrise.

My biggest hope is that Hasbro sees some real competition in the field of "kids transforming robot toyline" for once and has to actually start putting some effort in their kid's lines or risk losing out entirely. There's been so much to unpack lately with announcements so let's see
Vortex - Looks amazing, makes one hyped for the other Combaticons
Alchemist - Seems ok, like all of the Primes just generally indifferent
Hot Wheels collabs - FUCK YEAH, day one preorders
Sideways - The big problem of updating any toy from the Beast era onward: the improvements aren't even noticeable, more of a sidegrade than upgrade.
Perceptor with little buddies: Neat. More cassettes are always good, shame they wasted the retooling on stuff nobody can even tell was changed.
Devastation gooner squad - Might buy one pack. Don't feel a need to get multiples.
Onyx Prime - what a joke. $50 leader class and it's a shitty Beast Hunters looking "stand up switch heads" piece of junk. Don't get why anyone's hyped for this.
