Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, rocket launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:

So I recently got the notion in my head that I want to try to make a custom GM squad and paint it like a Helldivers team.

Basically, get four GMs of similar tech level (or at least look similar enough to each other) but with a wide array of weaponry between the four of them that makes each one appear as a specialist, and paint them all in the same color scheme. As long as they look thematically similar and one doesn't look super high-tech or overly advanced compared to the others, it's good enough. The weapons can be mixed and matched, but the important thing is that each has a different weapon and loadout that logically makes sense for the individual GM (e.g. the sniper isn't also carrying a beam javelin and shoulder cannons) while the overall squad composition looks like it's built to take on any situation.

What HG GM kits would work well towards this end? And not just GMs, but Nemos, Jegans, etc. would be fine, again as long as they look similar enough to be on the same team once all have been given the same paint color scheme. For the time being I'm thinking of keeping it UC only, since AU grunts tend to look quite different and I want my squad to look like they all come from the same manufacturer (or at least were built using the same design principles, that sort of thing). GMs from Thunderbolt, The Origin, etc. would also be fine, but I'm not super well versed on GM variants.

The other obvious condition is that I get enough weapons and accessories to kit out the entire squad with different roles for each one (again, mixing and matching weapons after the fact is fine) and the entire squad to be well-balanced to engage any threat. So, things like a sniper rifle, bazooka, artillery, standard beam rifle, short-ranged spray gun/carbine, and so on. I might also have weapons from other HG kits that I'm going to use for kitbashing that I could also paint in the color scheme.

Please give me ideas, suggestions, etc.

I always heard so much about the GM Spartan, and doing a bit of research, it does look pretty cool and that minigun definitely looks like something you would see as part of a squad weapon. Shame that it's only ever shown up three times on US P-Bandai, and all back in 2023, but I assume that the $6 Chinese bootleg will suffice.

Thanks for the suggestion, it looks like both have a good amount of weapons (the Origin Shoulder Missile Pod kit from MSD in particular seems to have everything from the P-Bandai Sleggar Custom and Moroccan Front with shoulder cannon, plus more), and they are pretty aesthetically similar.

Unfortunately, I think that I'm now a victim of wanting way too much and as a result I might end up buying a few kits just for their weapons/equipment. In combination with the three above, I was thinking that a GM Cannon II could serve as the heavy armor and big guns guy, but I also kind of want the Origin GM Guard Custom with the Guardian Shield (I've always been a sucker for huge shields), and I almost certainly want a sniper rifle guy but the one that comes with the HGUC GM Sniper II looks kind of piddly (there's a sexier one that comes with the HG GM Sniper that's currently on P-Bandai's June catalog, but there's nothing else I want to buy in June since I already have like half that shit). I was also contemplating the HGUC Powered GM from 0083 since it looks pretty beefy, but I don't think it comes with any good weapons.

Welp, the process has begun.

I found after some research that the GM Sniper on P-Bandai is not only basically just the Ground GM, but also effectively has the same weapons and accessories as the old 2001 MG (minus a basic beam rifle). So that not only takes care of the sniper weapon for the team (though I'll probably put the rifle on a different MS), but also gives me a shoulder-fired missile launcher that I can put on the heavy artillery team member.

The G-Line Light is basically just an excuse to not get shafted by the $10 shipping on a single kit, but I figure that since it's a Federation MS from 0081, it'll be roughly the same tech level as the GM Sniper and GM Spartan, plus I like how beefy its beam rifle looks. I already got the Narrative-B, Altron and RG RX-78-2 2.0 weapons set from previous orders, so the only other option to buy was the Desultor, which theoretically looks similar to GMs but not close enough for my tastes.

So now I just need to find a good vendor for a bootleg GM Spartan, and then pick one more GM-style kit from the 0079-0083 era to round out my four-man squad. I'm kind of leaning towards the GM Cannon II since it's big and beefy-looking with big guns. The Origin/MSD GM with the shoulder missile pods has more accessories (I really like its beam rifle and I think I still need a bazooka), but it looks a bit plain. I guess I have a decent amount more planning that I need to do.

I've ordered knockoff action bases before, and have a Daban The O that I haven't started building yet. These kits being a fraction of the cost of the actual kits, I'm sure there will be flaws in the manufacturing process but for such a discount I don't think I'll care. Worst case, they become kitbash fodder and I order an actual GM kit between now and June and attach the weapons to those.

Being the dumbass that I am, I am now contemplating buying some of these weapons kits from P-Bandai, since their Gundam Base afterstock stuff is actually pretty plentiful. I already got the Mega Launcher + Beam Spray Gun kit from awhile back because I wanted the Mega Launcher to attach to my RG Zeta, but I still want some more beefy weapons. I'm just wondering whether or not I want to try to buy $120 worth of shit to get free shipping.

Theyre pretty cool and great for painting. The s.w 1 has that rack but none others come with it. The rack fits the megahouse white base deck and the gun clips fit in the argama deck.

May I receive some guidance or recommendations? I didn't see a section in the guides about airbrushing. I thought there used to be paint info in the guides, but they seem to be gone. I'm trying to complete a setup for my Iwata HP-CS; I have the airbrush, hose, and cleaning tub thing. I just don't have

For a compressor, "matching" is optional since you can just buy an adapter on Amazon. Assuming that you bought the Iwata Eclipse at Hobby Lobby, it uses a 1/8" connection with BSP (British Standard Pipe) threading, and if your compressor was made in the US it may very well use NPT (National Pipe Thread) threading. You'll have to measure the width on your airbrush connection and check what type of threading the compressor you want uses. You just want to make sure that it can dial in the PSI you want, otherwise you'll have to buy a regulator to attach to your airbrush.

A moisture trap isn't "mandatory" unless you live in a humid area. I live in a desert area so I make do without one (the one that came with my Eclipse broke somehow).

For a respirator, you want something rated for both P100 and OV (100% of particulates, and organic vapor). That ensures you don't breathe in the lacquer fumes as you paint. The one I use cost $42 at Ace Hardware, they should have replacement filters as well. When not using your respirator just stow it in a gallon Ziploc bag, that helps prolong its life.

The primer that most people here use is GSI Creos Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500. Lower number means rougher particulate which is good for filling in chips, gouges and imperfections (rare/nonexistent on Gunpla so we use 1500). Thin it with GSI Creos Mr. Leveling Thinner (the number here just indicates volume, it's unimportant except that you want to buy in bulk so most people get the 400). Paints are up to you, for lacquer you can just go with GSI Creos stuff (Mr. Color, any self-respecting hobby shop will stock it), another option is Gaianotes. If you want to paint in enamel, then Hobby Lobby stocks Testors stuff but if you have other options Revell enamels are more cost-efficient. Enamel can be thinned with regular lacquer thinner you get off the shelf at Home Depot or Lowe's, it's the cheapskate's option but still gives good results.

For paint, GSI Creos (Mr Hobby), Tamiya, Gaia Notes, AKI, Pro-Acryl, all thin totally fine with Tamiya X20A. Mr Leveling Thinner is a nice bonus as well. I recommend buying some plastic spoons to practice on to get the hang of it as well (and test mixes). An electric paint mixer is also nice.

Other things you'll want:

Bottle of astroglide to lubricate your airbrush parts
Glass eye droppers for siphoning paint/thinners (you want at least 1mL capacity), if you don't want to be an asshole who uses single-use plastic pipettes
Set of stainless steal pipe cleaners to clean your equipment
A few latch lid jars with around 100mL capacity (keep your hardware store lacquer thinner in this and extract with the glass eye droppers so you don't have to fuck around with the big tin each time you want some thinner)
Nail polish racks (cheap way to keep your paints organized)
Small metal mixing trays and metal mixing spoon (again, if you don't want to be an asshole who buys a shitload of single-use trays and popsicle sticks)

Other optional stuff you might want are glass files, hobby tweezers and scissors, sandpaper, sanding sticks, sanding sponges, a pack of guitar picks (very good for separating parts), Super Clean from the automotive section at Walmart (the ultimate paint stripper), cotton swabs, and a bunch of other chemicals like 91% alcohol, mineral spirits, and so on.

Understanding your paints is important too, both in strengths, weaknesses and health concerns.

Acrylic paints are basically the easiest and safest, but are not the most durable in some cases.

Lacquer is more more durable, slightly harder to use at first and AVOID smelling or using in a closed off or low ventilated room.

You don't want to compromise on safety with this stuff. If you can't do it safely, then it's better not to do it at all, because you don't want to end up with respiratory problems for the rest of your life.

And remember, you need to top coat your paint job after you're done if you don't want your it rubbing off, especially on shit that you're going to be handling.

you can get by with a lot less if you use acrylic paints instead of lacquers
- no toxic fumes so you dont need a respirator (still recommended to wear a mask or something so airborne paint particles dont go down your throat)
- also dont 100% need a ventilated spray booth. still wanna use a cardboard box or something so the spray doesn't get everywhere. maybe spray outside or in the garage where there's natural airflow

not sure if acrylics would be durable enough for computer mice though.

All that being said, the decision on how you want to apply decals (or not) is your choice alone. Don't feel obligated to follow the official markings guide if you don't want to. It's your plastic model kit, and you can customize it however you see fit.

If you have a harbor freight nearby. Fortress 2 gallon air compressor for about 200. Grab a mask with organic filters and hoses and quick disconnect there. Iwata makes quick adapters for the airbrushes. Also a 1/4 to 1/8 hose thats pretty much what youd probably need. I bought some madworks brushes and find them to be pretty good for the price point.

This is starting to get out of hand.

I realized that buying a G-Line Light just to kitbash would be a terrible idea, so it's just going to the standalone pile. The GM Guard Custom is (lore-wise) a repurposed GM Sniper Custom and the visor works a lot better in that regard, so it's going to get the long-range beam rifle from the GM Sniper. The GM Sniper in turn is (kit-wise) just a Ground GM, so once it's repainted nobody's going to notice the difference, and I can put regular grunt weapons on it. The GM Spartan will probably keep all its own gear plus extra added stuff to its backpack. And the HG Origin GM is probably going to get relegated to kitbash fodder (it has the fancy crotch with the Federation V so I might swap that onto the GM Guard). The final step will probably be to buy a HG GM Cannon II and make that the heavy armor + artillery team member (it's being sold on Newtype, but I'm waiting for a sale to get it and a GM army at the same time).

The silver lining is that I have an unbuilt HG Zaku II, so the Zaku machine gun and heat hawk from those weapon packs will find a home there. I just need to finalize which team members are going to get the beam spray gun, the beam gatling and the Gelgoog rifle.

Yes, it can panel line bare plastic with no issues. No need to buy the brand name stuff though, cheaper generic micropens also do the job just fine. And it gets even easier once you start painting and using panel washes instead.

NTA, but what's are good metallic pens? I got some gundam brand ones as a gift and they're nice colors, but most of them are these chunky chisels. I had to dab it onto a little pallet and use a brush to get silver into little sticker areas on my Nu. If I was going to use a brush, I'd just use a brush. All right, first ever attempt at molding. It went "horribly wrong" in that this re-usable mold stuff hardens way too quickly, five minutes isn't anywhere near enough time to get it into a vacuum chamber to pull the bubbles out. As a first attempt I did learn a lot though, and there are opportunities to improve.

Perhaps my methodology is just unsound and I need to make better use of my available tools. Instead of using the microwave as the product suggests, I can set up a double boiler and melt it via stovetop, which lets me put it at the upper end the temperature range). Then pour it into a smaller mold (multiple individual molds for each piece instead of one mold holding multiple pieces), and only then try to vacuum pot it.

My other problem is that the red piece snapped as I tried to remove it from the clay, pure clumsiness on my part. A bit of rubber cement, reinforcement of the back, and then melted runner and sanding should set it right though.

Attempt number two was... "better." I was contemplating just directly putting the mold into the 175F water and just letting the heat force the air bubbles out, but apparently Legos don't react well to near-boiling water, and I'm not sure if it'll fuck up the clay either. So I might try to build the walls taller, just pour a shitload of casting material in and running a full vacuum without stopping. Two experiments in one night is enough for me though, so this will have to continue later.

Yet you invested in a vacuum pump and chamber? Come on now.

Seriously though, vacuum chamber is designed for regular silicone's curing time, so trying to de-gas your microwaveable silicone in it is only going to end in frustration. I used to use some quick-cure silicone myself, but when I finally got a vacuum pump I switched to regular because of that.

BTW, urethane resin produces quite a bit of heat when it cures, so it would be pretty funny if it melts your mold in the process.

More experimentation: At 180F Lego bricks don't seem to suffer any loss in stability, and plasticine clay turns liquid-ey but reforms once cooled. So, directly bathing the mold in hot water seems like it won't be an option since the pieces might move around in the liquid clay and fuck up the mold. All right, after the fourth attempt, I admit defeat. This shit is no good if you're trying to cast parts that include the holes/pegs needed to connect one part to another. Air bubbles get trapped easily inside the holes and you end up with voids, among other things, and five minutes isn't anywhere near enough time to try to get them out. The material seems firm enough to withstand casting, but there are so many other considerations, plus I think it's getting less fluid the more times I put it through a heat cycle. I suspect that I will be able to use this stuff to cast relatively simple or large parts, particularly MG components, so long as there aren't small holes that can trap bubbles.

I did get some practice ironing out the kinks with the vacuum chamber though, plus I now know that I can heat up the clay to make it easier to handle for laying out the bottom of the molding box, so it's not a total loss. So now besides buying the silicone, I'll also start looking into making a DIY pressure pot (the compressor tank I bought at Harbor Freight that I use for airbrushing might already help with that).

Unless you are planning some kind of elastic epoxy as your casting material, you will find that peg-hole connections don't really work with resin (that isn't elastic unlike the plastic these peg-hole connections were designed for) without some adjustment. If you're going to resin, you might want to redesign your connections (to use pins for example) before you make your molds.

I would just get the Master Airbrush 1/5 HP Cool Runner II Dual Fan Tank Air Compressor Kit Model TC-326T. It comes with everything you need iirc. I replaced a california air tools retard big (and loud) compressor with it after I left the CAT compressor while moving, and it's perfectly capable of driving any hobby airbrush. I have the Iwata HP-CS, Procon Boy PS-290, and Mr. Airbrush Custom PS771. I guess if you plan on spraying for like an hour straight you should look at something with a bigger tank, but I've never had an issue.

But whatever you get, make sure you empty out your tank after every session. Moisture builds up in the tank and can cause rusting. Aluminum tanks and fully/internally coated tanks (both are rare from what I understand) are kind of protected against it, but it's basic maintenance/use in general.

In the age of 8K+ 3D printers, recasting is a dying art that might not be worth time and effort mastering. 3D printing on the other hand will surely come in handy in your modelling going forward.

Among old traditional shops perhaps.
Fully 3D printed kits and detail up sets are becoming quite common too.

So a lot of small things that make the building less fun than it could be, but it does look really good already. I need to see how I feel about it tomorrow when I finish it because while I don't regret buying it I do not feel like I will buy a RG again.

I'd still recommend God Gundam, maybe Tallgeese and Regular Wing, Epyon people have spoken highly of, think those and God are among the highly praised ones, and the TV version for Wing Zero's coming out soon (as well as Shining). Hope it doesn't put you off of RGs too much, apparently the new molds past Unicorn is when it gets better (I don't know if this includes Unicorn), when there were less and less complete frames and it's mostly just a mini-MG

Pretty sure that's just a stylized version of the RX-78-2, it's the only one with a single white V-fin with red diamond, segmented side vents, and red eyeliner under yellow eyes. Its forehead gem is usually pink or red though, so this could also be a stylization of the GP01 or GP03.

I have to say now that I posed him with my HG Shenlong and Deathscythethe look and quality is significantly better and justifies the price 100% however next to my Hg Aerial it's not that impressive anymore.

you could probably buy a cheap used pressure cooker on ebay
you'd need to figure out some way to pressurize it other than putting it on a burner though

however apparently from searches, any issues that might arise would be from the joints from the pre-made parts, and tightening joints is an easy fix anyway, especially if it's just the arms and not like, every joint.
And yeah, I remember the RG didn't come with safety flags for the V-fin, and the legs and even the feet were very detailed and intricate, as well as the shoulders. The tiny stickers were a bit annoying, but it turned out to be a very pretty kit that needed very minimal markering to look good. (just the mouth, side vents, and chest vents for me, haven't put any decals on it)
Overall would you get another RG? The upcoming Wing Zero, God, Epyon, Tallgeese? The Hi-Nu which everyone seems to love?

Decals over matte will cause the decals to silver. Wont give a good grip. So do the decals first then do the matte after. Try not to go heavy with the topcoat over the decals as they can soak up the clear coat and mess up. At least for the first coat, so try to do a thin coat and build up from there. Shouldnt be too hard for you.

you mean the HG wing kits? I do like their look but they really struggly with movement. Basically you pose them once and you want to never touch them again afterwards because some limb is falling off even if you don't touch it. The HG Aerial is fucking great, same with the Heindere Storm, Training Suit and the Michaelis.

CA glue is CA glue, brand doesn't really matter. ordering online for something small like that is probably more expensive than buying whatever you can find in person off a local store shelf. the only difference that really matters is whether you get the thin/watery kind or the thick gel kind. for most modeling applications you want thin since it'll flow into gaps and shit and won't build up much material thickness but there are some situations where you want a dollop of gel to sit in place
if you really want a name I often see modelers say zap-a-gap and bob smith industries, and they both show up in a lot of hobby stores. (home depot didn't really have bottles of CA glue sadly, just tiny tubes of gel)
i got the zap thin ca glue because it was the best price for the size on my local hobby store's glue shelf and it works fine, it's glue all right. BSI also seem to sell white label stuff so the hobby stores will sometimes rebrand the same bottles with their own name. the 1-3 second drying time on the insta-cure shit kind of scares me though, how tf do you use this?

Basically, Action Base 1 and 4 for 1/100 scale kits, Action Base 2, 3 and 5 for 1/144 kits or large weapons/accessories for 1/100 kits. But if you have access to Alibaba, it's a lot cheaper to buy from there if you don't mind doing extra finishing work (patching holes, sanding down pegs, etc.). An official Bandai Action Base usually costs around $10 USD, whereas you can buy three or four Chinesium knockoffs for that price.

Most of the time it's more like 5-10 sec at least, unless you use some truly microscopic amount on some tiny part.
In any case, the medium kind (purple label for BSI) is what I end up using in 90% of the situations.

Sandpaper or glass files are the only way to really reduce nubs down to zero, and even then you may end up with stressed plastic. For a first time build, that's fine, but you are encouraged to try to learn how to paint since that will render nub marks completely invisible.

I think the general consensus is that if you want a good metallic finish, you'll use an airbrush before a paintbrush, and a paintbrush before a paint pen. The issues with a paint pen come from the design of the applicator (whether it's a point or chisel tip), which is the entire product itself.

The 1.0 has been printed to hell and back and regularly shelfwarms at Hobby Lobby. The 2.0 is literally less than a year old and has a shitload of marketing backing it up, so it's still in the phase where not everyone who wants one can get it yet and thus it sells out quickly whenever it becomes available.

The silver lining here is that since you're buying it so late, you're very likely to get one that has the fixed head vulcans.
