at least that is the basic economic principle. Trump is right to a certain extent that many countries are using that as an excuse to prevent US goods entering their markets, or make American goods noncompetitive due to the respective price increase by those tariffs
however, tariffs are supposed to be targeted against specific items, a general and broad measure as the one he announced today, with indicators he pulled out of his ass, just mean economic mayhem for a long time and most likely, retaliation by many countries, precisely with tariffs against targeted US goods
all this means that in the middle of the crossfire, the average Joe in the US will most likely see a large price increase in pretty much everything and surprise surprise, those prices won't go down
