What is the appeal of Beast Box toys? They just transform into boxes.

Those are called 'Traps', 'Geogan', or 'Shape Fury', though the last one was cancelled with only a few making it into the wild.
To answer OP's question, the transformation process itself is a huge part of the fun, and it's strangely satisfying to convert them from cube to animal and back. They make great desktop fidget toys, and are easily transportable.

They're good for Mega Man enemies, at leaast the ones with the big angry eyes. Sadly they changed the eyes as time went on and they're just cool animal mecha toys

Long answer: 52Toys has very simple instructions for their engineers. You have a 2.53 area to work with. Give us your most clever designs. And that's really it. Some of the engineering from 52Toys absolutely smokes veterans like Takara and Bandai.

I was never big into them, as most look goofy to me. But these owls are quite nice figures I think, they're fun to pose, pretty to look at.
The cube transformation may be a gimmick, but I enjoy the engineering of it and I used them as fidget toy before.
Also I'm really into Bionicles, so having a canister/box to store it in speaks to me.

Hexagons are way better than boxes. They tessellate well and have more efficient space usage than squares.

If your limiting factor for collecting stuff is storage space, they're a very smart option. They come with little containment boxes that snap together into a wall shape, even providing a little folding plastic sheet to put inside to make them sort of spring out and save you having to tilt the wall to get them out (in theory, anyway, mine dont always work). Some of them get a little overengineered for my taste but as everyone says, the owls and beetles are top of the line.

One I never see anyone talk about are the crossover ones with that chinese sci fi show, a lunar rover bot and a computer that can ether be a hang-down GLaDOS type thing or a frankenstein tower interface. Both are very cool.

The AMS ones always have really cool concepts but boy howdy are they fiddly as fuck. I think the construction ones were the only ones that didn't feel either frail or like I really had to get them just right to operate correctly. I loved the way the submersible ones looked combined, but they suck individually and even the combo has weird parts that feel unnecessary. But that's just my two cents.
